Thank you so much for posting your step by step procedure in overhauling a swing keel. I have a MacGregor 22 in desperate need of attention, mostly i needed info on keel sled and procedure for dropping keel. Really appreciate your video have seen nothing even close to how helpful this was.
Hi mate .. You're welcome. If you can afford it, I recommend using west systems epoxy with the pumps. Best way to make sure you get the mix right. Check out Stingy Sailor too, he has a lot of good ideas. Good luck.
Great timing. I just aquired a 1984 Vagabond 17 that I am sure has never had the keel out. lots of play but it has a pass through bolt. I haven't pulled it yet but I figure it's going to need a bushing or sleeve at least. Great video, thanks.
Hi Mike, thanks for the comment mate. Good luck with your overhaul. The biggest lessons I learnt were - go slow and use a dremel tool if you have to cut into the fiberglass. All the best, J.
I'm a sailing noob, just contemplating the purchase of a Balboa 26. But the swing keel is stuck in the down position due to a broken cable. Just watching you overhaul your keel gives me some confidence in making the purchase. I think fixing the cable will probably just be the start, though...wondering why it broke in the first place.
Hi Jeff .. If the boat's still in the water, I'd recommend getting it lifted out before making the purchase to see what's going on with the keel. Good luck mate. If you haven't already .. google the Balboa 26 and search for keel problems, if only to educate yourself. For my two cents worth .. buy a boat you can sail now and work on it as you go, that way you get to enjoy your purchase. Take care, J.
i have a 1974 catalina 22 and my pin is loose in the hole and moves, is it supposed to be non moving (epoxyed) into the keel? i have had it repaired once and had a bronze sleve put into the hole because it was obround from wear, just curious, i will be refinishing the keel next year., thanks again for sharing.
Hi Gary .. I searched the internet and I could find no correct answer to this .. epoxy in or not! .. The reason I epoxied in the bolt was because my pin was firmly in place the keel anyway and I thought, it is better to have wear and tear on the keel bolt and hanger straps - the alternative is to have wear and tear on the bolt, bolt keel hole and the hanger straps. Check out 'Stingy Sailor' .. he replaced his keel bolt and have a great review of the process. Thanks for checking out the video. All the best, J.
SV Mia Noi, thanks for the reply, here is what i'm trying, i had wear on the pivot hole. i used a bronze 1" thru hull connector and inserted it in the worn hole (fits really tight) and used the thru hull nut on the other side. Plenty of room on the hangers to do this. i added some metal filler above the thru hull here there was a void (shaped metal pieces to fit, pretty small void, pounded them in with a hammer, they are not going anywhere the nut also holds them in place.) i then filled the void with epoxy to fill any other small voids and hold the metal filler in place.. im taking it out for some trials, going to really test it and see if it hangs in there. the real advantage to this is that i did not have to remove the keel, i just removed the hanger bolts and jacked up the boat on the trailer to expose the pin and hole. thanks again, i really enjoy your videos, i learn a lot from them.
Hi Mate .. I epoxied in the bolt to eliminate wear and tear on the bolt keel hole. I thought it better to have wear and tear on the bolt and hanger straps. The bolt is brass and can be easily drilled if you need to remove it. The keel overhaul video on my site shows the removal. Good luck .. J.
Hi Mate .. Yer .. I have to agree 100% with you. 12 months on, the paint is starting to lift off exposing the old rusty keel and base layers. Interestingly it is occurring only where seaweed has hit the keel or been caught while sailing. Sandblasting isn't in my budget. So, I plan to scrap it back and put on an undercoat this time before the bottom paint. Thanks for watching the videos. All the best, J.

Hi, thanx for great video. What is the best material for keel pin? Brass, inox 316 or something else?
Was it wise to epoxy the keel pin into the keel? Won't it wear out eventually, and how can it then be removed?

I'm digging the music, man. Reminds me of Hank Mobley.
Thats exactly the same for me (Hachiebaker) you very mutch. I presently folow step by step your technics for restoring my 1986 Catalina 22. See you.
Nice but Catalina recommends sandblasting, gotta get ALL paint and rust off, not seal it in!
