Brian, enjoyed spending time with you. There’s no doubt in my mind the car is quieter; the bonus is now the doors close with a quality “thunk.” Thanks so much for letting me be a guinea pig to all your seals. No seals or pigs were harmed in the filming of this report!
I had a fun time and thank you for letting me see how well these work before I buy them. I normally find ways for subscribers to spend money but now you have found a way for me to spend my money.
I have had these installed for a few weeks now. It really does make it quieter. My son installed them for me before we took our last road trip. Great product.
Good video. There are 2 drain holes on the back door as well as the front, checkout 02:13. You only referred to a single one on the back door, you covered one of them up during the install.
Please do a FULL spectrum analyzer test of before & after for the decibel level. I hate when everyone just does the peak number. You could have a reduction of 6+dB on one frequency area that wasn’t at the ‘peak’ but it still makes quite a perceived difference.
I put the extra "Z" seal I had around the trunk lid too because it connects directly to the inside of the car. Makes a big difference as well - especially when slamming the lid. Put some seal behind the license plate AND behind the license plate holder. Now slamming the trunk lid won't sound tinny or metal on metal. The Z seal works great around the trunk lid - put the sticky part towards the outside, skip over the tail lights and on those put the seal directly on the lights (top). Don't forget the loop seal ring for around the roof glass. For less than $100 my car now sounds like a bank vault (that's all the door seals - P and Z seals per the "Tesla Fans" RUclips, the roof (RPM Tesla RUclips) and the trunk lid (that's my own idea).
Cool. Maybe do a spectral analysis of the sound before and after so you can see which frequencies disappear, not just a slight change in dB. A microphone and audio software should be able to do it. If you have a mic that can record at a fixed level you can compare the absolutes as well.
fallscitybob any RUclipsr is trying their best to give you information before you ever get a chance to use your own ears. Listening for sound levels is super subjective and one person can have more audible range or sensitivity, or lack thereof, to certain frequencies. So...having factual data to show the improvements can help viewers make a MUCH more confident choice on which items actually reduce noise levels more. There’s also the placebo effect that happens where you can convince yourself there is an improvement when there really isn’t any.
Hummmmmmm. Sound tests are not reliable unless you do before and after controlled test with a good db meter...…..set on the A scale. As a professional engineer, it's hard for me to believe that a window tint would ever make any significant difference in sound level. you usually have a good post...…….but this one seems to be more of a subtle effort to sell a rubber seal kit and window tinting rather than offering helpful information.
I installed them and i am starting to see the from right strip come off. I followed the direction to the "T" also and have to say Im a little disappointed at this point. Not sure if the sound proof is better but I wanted to add another seal to stop the dirt from coming so far into the door jam.
Installed mine but I hear nor feel no difference, both with the closing of the doors and also while driving. Is it possible because some of the seals aren't at the absolute edges all across? I noticed in this video the water drains are kept UNDER the seal (so obviously meaning to say as shown in the clip, you run the seal above the drain cut-out, which means for that couple of inches, the seal is not at the edge)?
Silver Gt -- The color is called "Metallic Silver" and was discontinued as a menu option in the fall of 2018. My M3D is that color and I love it, especially since it doesn't show the dust and dirt as much as other colors do. A Tesla sales rep, whom I recently encountered while on a cross-country tour, told me that the color could be special ordered "off menu". He did not say what that might cost extra.
Silver Gt -- I suggest that you visit a Tesla showroom or service center and ask them. If the silver color can be ordered of menu, it shouldn't matter which vehicle configuration you choose. At least that is what I would expect.
Brian, I must returned home from a cross-country tour from Florida to California. My biggest noise complaint is the loud rumble (roar) on some rough asphalt road surfaces. It seems to come mostly from the rear of the car. I wonder if there is any good solution for damping that type of noise.
Hey, We've been told not to tint the windshield on the M3 because of watering getting to the computer. Did you guys have a special procedure to avoid that issue. Shops here (AZ) won't even try to tint it unless the glass is out of the car?? Advise?
This company uses a rope that catches most of the water. I showed it in the tint videos I have done. The computer is not right under the windshield but it is close on the 3. The S and X are even farther away. Don't go back to them to get your windows done.
Brian, at 5:06 that seal on the back door.....I put mine on the back side of the metal, I see you put it in the front...?? I bought my set from a different vendor.......hmmmm
Mr CarCrazy yes a have a dual motor model 3 and I have made a couple modifications as well. The biggest modification being a Satin red wrap. I plan on switching the rims and dropping the car soon. I still wish my model 3 came with the extra seals especially because of how much I paid for it. It might be the lack of engine noise that makes the wind noise more noticeable though. Also, I almost have to slam my doors for them to close I heard they fixed that in the model 3 being manufactured now. Oh well
Stephen R yeah the newer ones close easily. Word of warning. If they are hard to close now they will be harder with more seals. FWIW I also own a bmw 3 series. Has a similar seal setup to the model3 performance (and similar price). Biggest difference is the frameless Windows on the model 3 are harder to seal up.
Stephen R no. It’s a fairly common complaint by forum members (I expect it will improve as the weatherstripping breaks in a bit). Mine are sitting on a table in my house waiting for install this weekend.
Hey Brian, after visiting you in NC back in July, the first thing I did when I got back to RI was to install these on my car. I got the Basenor ones, which look exactly like yours. For my rear doors, I started about 1/4" lower than you did, because I noticed that if I started right at the top, when it got to the bend in the door metal as it went down, when closing the door, it seemed to slightly warp the seal. Also, on the bottom, I actually went below the drip openings. That way, the extra flappy part of the seal would be just a bit lower, so when closing the door, it would really fill that gap between the bottom of the door and the top of the rocker panel. I noticed that you covered the other front drip opening. Not sure if you noticed this or not. Finally, for the rear door, I also cut it to the end of the door, but also trimmed a little extra on the lower flappy part of the seal, as I noticed that before I cut it, it would tend to bunch up a bit, as it hit the rocker panel. Front doors, I did the same: went below the drip openings for the full bottom length. The front of the front door one was tough, but I did it exactly as you did. My seal for in front of the rear door (where the back of the front door closes on) was a little different than yours. Mine didn't wrap around like yours did. Great video as always !!
Awesome video, Brian! I’d love to ceramic tint all of my windows to reduce UV radiation and to make it quieter inside the passenger cabin. I might even try the extra door seals! Thank you so much 😊
Brian, moreover from my previous comment, I know why now.... The vendor I bought my seals, his kit is different because: 1. front door seal only includes the bottom of the front doors, not the outer vertical side 2. for the B pillar, front side of the back door, the seal goes on the inside instead of the outside. Not sure which method is better but they're definitely different and since you're the test engineer here I will trust your judgement :-) The kit I bought is shown in this video, hope you can check it out quickly and let me know what you think about that difference: ruclips.net/video/2zozt5B0wTE/видео.html Thanks..!!
First : I'm not a fan of the choice you made for the dors, but the seals are very cute. Second : At 7:04 you talk about to get those doors seals, but you only show one seal. So it's kind of confusing. Do you plan to buy only one seal? Which is kind of weird... Or, are the other seals hidden behind the first one? I think you really need to clarify that and maybe re-do the video. And Third: You perfectly know what it is, so I don't even need to tell you. When you do something, you know what it is. Yes you do. Emoticon of the round yellow face rolling all around while crying because well this is what you do when you laugh a lot without being able to stop.
Hope you do a video and test on installing these on your TM3. The recent IEVs article had a video with these decibel reduction results: i.imgur.com/6woKnlK.jpg

This was fun that you made a video with one of your viewers! Jim seems like a cool dude

Dan Frederiksen I just realized I made the exact same suggestion as you did lol
@@JamieHarveyJr How many people really care about a scientific analysis? All that really matters is what your ears tell you.

Good video but once is enough for the door seal gag. LOL
Agree, everytime? Stupid.
Very interested in the decibel meter test. This wasn't high on my list, but you might change my mind.

He really got you on that one!
You should have used a db meter before and after install on the same road at the same time of day etc.
I will when I buy them and install them on my car
The seals are intended to run below the door drain holes. Glued surface edge flush with outer edge of door. No cutting required.
I installed them and i am starting to see the from right strip come off. I followed the direction to the "T" also and have to say Im a little disappointed at this point. Not sure if the sound proof is better but I wanted to add another seal to stop the dirt from coming so far into the door jam.
Keep these great videos coming! Thanks
The previous roof tint that I saw was installed from the inside.
I think I like mine since I installed it. I’m not sure. You have to close the doors a little harder.

Great channel, great host, great content.

I wonder if Tesla plan on including the seals with the car anytime soon. Car drives itself but doesn’t have enough seals.
Stephen R doubt it. The model 3 has the same seals as most every other car. Tesla owners are often enthusiasts, so they change/add things.

A decibel meter won't show much, on my own car it helped remove tons of low sounds from entering the cabin.

6:20 for the testing. :)
Most tests show a 1dcb reduction. A lot of work for a little reduction in my opinion. Lets see what you get.
Try to calculate how many door seals u have mentioned
Should add drainage holes.
