I am a lifelong resident of Windsor, Ontario which is just across the border from Detroit. I was only 12 years old in 1984 but because my dad was and is such a huge Tiger's fan, I remember the year so well. It was one of the highlights of my childhood years and it was a lot of fun even in here in Canada!
"BLESS YOU BOYS" That was the 1984 Detroit Tigers Fan Motto!!! And boy did they!! What a start what a team. We truly should have been a dynasty but no matter, they won it all and I was 17 so I understood just how special it was. We sat lower bleachers center field for both games 4 and 5!!! We were some of the crazies that ran onto the field and threw pieces of turf up to the upper deck!! Yes we were that wild!!! I think for the city of Detroit which had endured such hard times leading into the economic recovery of the 80's there was just so much steam to blow off and poor Tigers stadium had to endure all that craziness. However we were there 6 months later on opening day and the old girl was as beautiful as ever!!! Thank you 84 Tigers and apologies to the old girl may she rest in piece!!
the Gibson home run that helped the Dodgers a few years later might be the more well known one, but this is far and away one of my favorite world series home runs because of Sparky Anderson
I watched Morris' no-no from the hospital as I was recuperating from broken ribs, back, and bruised lung from getting thrown out of a rolling car the day before the season opened.
I've been watching MLB since I was about 5 years old in 1974, and I think the '84 Tigers were the most dominant, single-season team that I've ever seen. They rose quickly and died quickly, but man, what a season they had!
Yep, but unfortunately coaches, and players, like Sparky, Williams, Rose, Brett, Winfield, etc. had the quality and character that we'll never see again.
1984 national league east champion cubs, built by the Phillies. Warren Brusstar, Dickie Noles, Dick Ruthven, Larry Bowa, Richie Hebner, Ryne Sandberg, BobDernier, Jay Johnstone, Gary Mathews, Keith Moreland. all former Phillies.
I like the way MLB did the CUBS dirty by taking the homefield advantage away because they CUBS didn't have lights, and they still ended up playing a day game on Sunday. But the Padres were not even good enough to win it all. That got their butts kicked by the Tigers in 5 games.
Padres have made two WS in their history (as of the end of the 2022 season), and both times they lost to two teams that are in the discussion of greatest teams of all time = 1984 Tigers and 1998 Yankees Padres still the only California team to never win a WS (as of the end of the 2023 season)
keith hernandez should of won national league mvp in 1984 sandbergs numbers inflated playing at wrigley.also i cant believe this was 40 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!
When Garvey hit that HR - it was an explosion heard for miles around the stadium. It was voted SD's #1 all time sports moment. Game 5 Durham was the goat...not the GOAT. Buckner saved him 2 years later. I went to both games in Chicago: The Cubs fans stole hats and pennants from our traveling fans and burned them in the stands; they threw a smoke bomb near Tony Gwynn; they mocked the death of Ray Kroc after game 2. Karma is a bitch. Side note: I was at the airport and saw Reggie Jackson who was working as an analyst for ABC. I went up to him to sign a baseball and he told me to stand around the corner so no not to attract atttention...Yes...Reggie Jackson said he did not want to attract attention. :)
The Cubs didn't lose to the Padres: They CHOKED!😡 How can you explain to me in the first 2 1/3 games of the NLCS they outscored them 18-2 and still lose?🤔 Everyone needs to check out the last three games again, because I saw (in regards to Game 3) lots of little things to prove that this was the Cubs series for the taking. And I'm wondering why did centerfielder Bob Dernier have that knee-jerk reaction in Game 4 and not making the catch (costing two runs; proof of a fix?).
So we could have had very early daygame World Series in 1984 if the Cubs had beaten the Padres Although it wouldnt have surprised me if MLB told the Cubs to play their World Series home games in the WSOX stadium to be able to have nightgames

That home run by Gibson was so sweet because you could see Gossage say that he thought he could get him. Then I heard Vin Scully say "There it goes!"

Thanks for Sharing!!!
Today, August 12, is the 40th anniversary of the Battle In Atlanta, involving the Braves and the San Diego Padres. Wow, 40 years ago today.
The 1984 Detroit Tigers are fantastic. 😀👍⚾️

35-5 will NEVER be repeated.
True!!!
Just for context, both the 1998 Yankees and the 2001 Mariners started 31-9 in their first 40 games.
@@hmhm856 yup...2 great teams....and that again shows why 35-5 will never be repeated
The Bless you Boys !!!
That '84 Tigers team was one of the best baseball teams I've ever seen
Agreed!!!!

Sparky Anderson seems like a hell of a coach to play for
True!!!

1984 - The Year of the Tiger.
You’re right about that, they were so good and Talented that year!!!
WOW a decade before I was born.
Sparky said the Tigers was the best team he ever managed. I believe it.
They were so good and Talented all at the same time!!!!

Dallas Green brought the same blue print
Do you have Roar of 84? Its a documentary about the 1984 Tigers.
What a year the tigers were the best but the cubs were fun to watch

I was wondering the same thing!!

They more than likely would have installed lights at Wrigley.
@@rmartin7558True!!!
Actually 1984 would be the last time we would ever see a daytime World Series game. Starting in '85 MLB changed it to all night games for TV ratings.
The year I was born…. Not a tigers fan 🤷🏻♂️💭
