I love this, I was 14 in 88. Plus, Mel Allen, I feel bad kids today don't have the old school broadcasting.

It's pretty incredible to look back and see how Oakland assembled a team with a bunch of over-the-hill pitchers, transformed them into all-star-level pitchers, and built the best team in baseball for the next 3 seasons. Major credit to Tony La Russa and Dave Duncan.

I was ten in 88. I remember for the Los Angeles area it was a big sports scene with the Lakers defending their title and then the Dodgers, a clear under dog against the Mets and A's, prevailing.

The music that's used beginning at the 22:44 mark is "Money 59" by John Devereaux and Andy Clark. In 1988, ABC Sports used "Money 59" in its opening for their Monday Night Baseball telecasts.

In 1988, Dave Stewart earned 21 wins and 12 losses. He started 37 games, completed 14, and pitched 275 innings. That's an incredible amount of pitching (and wins). How did his arm not fall off?

    • @quack34

Stewart may have been underutilized for several seasons prior to 1988. He bounced around and no team seemed to know how to utilize him in a way that maximized his potential. LaRussa figured it out though!

    • @joeski734

The worst ever actually. That team had Cal Ripken, Eddie Murray, and Fred Lynn and still went 0-21. They were bad, no question. But 0-21? The chance of a team with a .355 winning percentage (their final mark) losing their first 21 is about 1 out of 10,000. Some of it was just a sad fluke. I know because I watched the whole depressing thing.
