    Imagine if powerlifting were more "mainstream" there is no way we would be getting this information for free. You don't see Usain Bolt, Lebron James, or Derek Jeter (just examples, chill people) giving FREE instructional videos and putting them on youtube. It makes me appreciate the sport of powerlifting even more-I consider myself lucky.

      In the same way Ed coan can teach you how to deadlift it doesn't mean your gonna dead 800 the big diff is awareness and how the game is read and jet we lbj watt and many others can't teach you how to process football especially with their skill set that is why a lot of good players fail at coaching their way is just so dominant

      Steven ray Ive been watching this video over and over again for more than 30 times in the last two years ! I learn something new every time I watch it! Two years of.learning and practice now I can say I know how to deadlift a little bit! I know Im doing something right because when I'm deadlifting at the gym, people come to ask me questions about how to deadlift and they also gives me compliments. It takes a lot of dedications, commitment to be a good deadlifter and I'm still nowhere near there yet but Im learning because I want to be better and stronger. A lot of people think deadlift is just bend over and pick up the weight and lift it up but it's far more complicated than that!

  • @bradreid6057

    Ed Coan was very unusual. Most of the powerlifters from his era and earlier were either good at bench pressing and squatting (long torso and short legs), or they were good at conventional stance deadlifting (short torsos, long legs). The biggest mistake powerlifting ever made, and it made a bunch of them, was to allow the sumo wide stance "hands inside the knees" form. This effectively turned it into another expression of the same strength demonstrated by squatting. In the old days, you'd have some guy get ahead with the bench and squat . . . only to have another guy reel in a two lift total deficit with a big traditional deadlift. Gosh, it made for compelling competitions. With Coan, by the way, this wouldn't have made much of a difference as he seemed to be able to deadlift with either stance and hand grip. Nor would any imposed bench press width, pre- bench shirt, have made a difference, nor would any squat stance limits have made a difference if one were ever enacted. He would have dominated under any set of rules. There has ever been a powerlifter with greater levers across all three lifts. Brad

    I have just realised that despite this being my fav chan on RUclips, and I genuinely get excited (hey now) when you guys post videos. I'm from the UK ankle currently in Cyprus on holiday, and had to find some shade at the pool side to watch this - and yet I never like or share. I apologise!

    This is why you should have an amateur doing the lift. You have three experienced guys talking about a lift and mising a million mistakes that the novice would do. Two quotes from the video sum it up:
    How close to the bar? "Comfort"
    How wide of a grip? "Preference"
    Thanks, now I know.

    is ed still on gear? or is it seriously possible keeping this ammount of strength at hes age? i tought testoserone went only down after you reach 40, still guy is huge, and he has 650 in him? rippetoe allmost shat hes pants with 500 with a belt, coan can probably go up to 700 at allmost 60 wtf??

    • @onestepup9950

      Gears cannot push you from 400lb to 900lb. So all that's left in Coan is sheer naturally in built strength.

    • @ML-nj8fq
      @ML-nj8fq 5 лет назад

      OneStepUp - Clash Royale & Advanced Tutorials Who said his natural limit wouldve been 400lbs? Just about any man can reach over 400 lbs in less than 2 years.

    • @onestepup9950
      @onestepup9950 5 лет назад

      @@ML-nj8fq Read what I said before throwing at me. I clearly said gear is not magically gonna push your power from 400lb to 900lb
      The fact that I mentioned naturally built strength means that he is naturally and genitically built super strong which means even without gear I feel he would've pulled over 700-750lbs anyway.

    • @ML-nj8fq
      @ML-nj8fq 5 лет назад

      OneStepUp - Clash Royale & Advanced Tutorials You can feel that way but we’ll never know. So even with that estimate, steroids add 200+lbs

    Okay, so I watched this vid about a week ago, I realized that I had been starting with my hips about 2 inches too low and my knees too much in front of the bar in the bottom, which has forced me to round my upper back more in order to get my shoulders over the bar instead of in front.
    I thought that I was just built to deadlift that way, since that's the position that I have felt the strongest in and allows me to get enough drive/speed off the floor. I took some notes from this vid, went in to the gym the next day and pulled a PR triple, and I did it for three sets in a row. My back didn't round a bit.
    Thank you master Coan

    Awesome video guys. So glad I found your channel. I'm trying to tighten up my sloppy deadlift form and it's super helpful hearing more people giving their technique and the ques they feel for and look for during the movement. The spoto bench video has already helped me tremendously ! If this helps me anywhere near as much I'll be sittin pretty :P

    Great videos with Ed Coan, Mark. He really is a legend on all fronts, not just his lifts. His attitude towards lifting has helped me see through the clouds of contrasting advice in the lifting community and just focus on the basics and find what works for me. Some people over complicate lifting when there is no need. Thanks for the videos
