R.I.P. Eric Carmen, who passed away these days, and sang here the famous and great song "Hungry eyes". Also R.I.P., of course, Patrick Swayze, who died years before in 2009. This is a fantastic movie, iconic for me, with an OST simply amazing.
Such a joyful reaction to this movie! Baby coming out of her shell and Johnny dropping his tough guy armor makes a great arc for them - loved how you pointed that out.
@shainewhite2781 judging by what was said at the start hopefully we'll get to see them all again. And I hope he adds 'Donnie Darko' to the list. A bold move by a great actor knowing that would be his final role (I think?). Remaking 'Road House' is okay, never great in the first place, but 'Point Break'! Just re-release the original and save 200 million and let the next gen see Patrick Swayze, rather than a cheap facsimile.🤷😁
31:23 That gorgeous lake doesn't exist anymore. :-/ The whole place was so beautiful. They should've kept it and make a real life "Dirty Dancing" experience with it.
Please watch more 80’s movies .. Provocative was the theme of the 80’s!! Kids are so soft now. I am 55 . I was about 18 when this movie was released . Please check out more older movies . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have watched a ton of movie reactions, and rarely have I come across someone as observant as you. You really pay attention. I must have watched this movie 30-40 times during the same amount of years, and you caught details I've never seen. Definitely like and subscribe!
So glad you loved this movie, it’s one of my favourites and I rewatch it at least once a year. Great reaction too, very insightful. I might just have to subscribe (there goes my ambition to reduce my screen time😅).
I just watched this movie with my 16 year old daughter (who is a musical theatre kid!) for her first viewing last week, and she loved it! It’s one of my faves so I’m so happy I could share it with her.
Every summer my family, my cousins, my grandparents and a bunch of friends from our church rented cottages at the Pelican Shores rental community in Englewood Beach on the Florida Gulf Coast. We lived in Orlando but went there every year. Yes, Baby's dad, Jerry Orbach, was in Law And Order. Also I have to agree with the others who say you don't have a good understanding of the 80's.
Thank you for your reaction! I especially appreciated your comments on the development of some of the minor characters, as well as your reminiscence on musical theatre and your experience with dance. Thank you for not forgetting the time period: so many reactors are confused by the dad's anger because they don't remember that abortion was illegal. I've been dancing 17 years now and I still love it.
Bravo that was a great reaction and it’s funny to say about her dancing she could not dance. She learn how to dance through the movie and had probably each other all went through the movie, but then they became good friends afterwar And Jerry Orbach played play her father, he was in law and order for years and also I’m being and the beast Lumiere great actor he played a heart surgeon. That’s why he saved Max‘s life why he got anything he wanted to kill him he took a vacation before, and Patrick Swayze hurt himself at the end, when he jumped off, the stage hurt his knee, given him pain all the rest of his life, his knee, his mother, his mother ran a big dance school in Texas and real life so he’s been dancing for most of his life time used in the film was the first time Star Wars people came back again to the theaters to see the movie word-of-mouth there was no Internet yet that’s how people get seen over and over again Movie 87 I think or at least one of the top 10 the prequel movie it wasn’t good they’re supposed to make a sequel but then he died so never did the way you described. Everything was great. You made a great movie even better. Thank you for that. Thanks for the fun until next time.
Yes, I was too and I had to beg my parents for months to let me see the movie. Then when they did, I watched it all the time and could do a lot of the dancing just minus a partner lol.
@meganlutz1750 I was 7 when this first came out and watched it and don't ever remember it being considered provocative. Watched it with my family, uncle and aunt and cousins. In England it was just a summer blockbuster.
I was in 10th grade when this came out and me and my friends were OBSESSED with the movie and the music. It brings such wonderful memories to watch it through the eyes of someone who has never seen it before because thats exactly how we felt when we watched it ❤
As a guy, this is one of my fave films - a guilty pleasure - I never fail to smile at the end and the goosebumps are IMMENSE when they finally do the lift!
There was a series of sultry mainstream films in the 1980s. "Fatal Attraction" came out that same year. "9-1/2 Weeks" was the year before this, "Jagged Edge" and more. This movie started a big trend and it was all in the middle of heavy 1960s nostalgia. The two soundtrack albums were really popular with women and girls. There was a prime time network TV special on it.
We had a loooot of sexy movies in the 80s.. and sure also in the 70s.. ! ;o) ...there was always sexy movies late at night on the cable, also !! ..today kids are outraged easily, it's funny!
I’ve seen this movie SO many times that I do the quotes with the same inflections as in the movies yet there are SO many things you pointed out that I never mentally took note to. 31:38 like how you noticed her outfit was back to clothes she wore at the beginning… never ever noticed! Love watching first time reactions for this exact reason!! Great job and thank you! Really enjoyed it! 💃🏻 🕺🏽
Loved all your comments. So insightful. I also like your professional background where you showed the film. So many of these “first time watching” presenters have trashy backgrounds and tiny windows for the film. You have nice clear voice, too. You may not know but Patrick Swayze wrote and sang “She’s Like the Wind” that played during the scene where Johnny drove away from Baby in the Chevrolet. I look forward to seeing your forthcoming videos, especially “Ghost,” my other all time favorite movie.
🙌🏼1st time on your channel:…your observations were spot on. Thank you for appreciating such a masterpiece. You are the epitomy of what movie reactors should be like🥳
There's a great behind the scenes thing on Netflix's The Movies That Made Us which talks about the class issues, social issues, soundtrack and filming stuff. It's a fantastic film and has really endured. Definitely an 80s classic.
Really fun reaction. Jerry Orbach was on Law & Order for many years but he was most known for musical theater. He was in many Broadway musicals. He was also the candlestick in Beauty and the Beast.
Of all the reactions I've seen only Americans keep talking about how controversial this movie would have been back then and even now. It wasn't in most part of the world. Great reaction though. As other people have stated, you noticed a lot of great stuff. Keep up your great work! 👍 32:44 Oh that is Patrick Swwaye singing by the way.
It wasn't even controversial in 1987, in America :) I just don't think Jonathan is old enough to remember that. It had a positive reputation and reviews and people talked about the sexy dancing, which hadn't been seen on screen before, but none of the rest of it was at all challenging. There were much more serious and challenging films made way, way before this one came out.
LOVED your reaction as much as the movie, which I love and have seen dozens of times. You’re the first reactor to this movie, so far, who hasn’t felt compelled to make snarky comments either out of embarrassment or just idiocy. Also, you understood the history and context of the era. 1963, before the Kennedy assassination and before the Beatles, was still a hangover from the 50s for most of America. “The Sixties” as most know them didn’t set in until after the Beatles arrived in the US. It was funny to hear you be surprised at this being on screen in the 80s. I guess you had to be there lol-the 80s were wild underneath the conservative politics-cousins cowboys, Miami Vice, the last gasp of free love before AIDS fear set in in the general community. I was there as young adult, I remember it all. The 70s were even wilder in some ways-I was there too as a teen lol-but the 80s had their own kind of wild. As far as cinema-wilder stuff than this was onscreen in the 70s and I don’t mean X-rated stuff. But anyway-great reaction to great movie, I really appreciated it and was grateful that you didn’t feel it necessary to make it a snark fest. Thanks:)
Damn autocorrect lol-that was meant to “cocaine cowboys” not “cousin cowboys” lol. You were probably quite understandably wondering what in hell I meant!
I don't remember there being much controversy over this movie at all. It came out at the end of August so the timing was perfect. It really just played as a nice coming of age story. The music and Patrick Swayze drew people in and the movie that cost less than $7 million made over $200 million. I didn't go to a resort in the Catskill area but my family did camp there for a number of years in the late 70s and early 80s in a mobile home park just a few miles west of the City of Catskill.
We saw this movie at the theater when it came out. People literally came out of the theater dancing and they danced across the parking lot to their cars!
PS Momiwbed a dance studio when was growing up .He is classically trained and took Ballet . EG learned for this film I think. She also won Dancing with the Stars 30 yrs later.Patrick would’ve been proud of her I remember thinking.⭐️
The place this was filmed was in Pembroke, Va at the Mountain Lake Lodge. It’s about 45 minutes from where I live and it’s gorgeous! I actually took my fiancé up there for the first time about a month ago since he’s from Nebraska and hadn’t been up there yet since he moved out here. It’s gorgeous and they told us while we were there that the movie was actually filmed in summer so everyone was out there painting the leaves on the real trees since it was supposed to be at the end of summer going into fall
Believe it or not before they genetically altered watermelons. That is what they normally looked like, they also were filled with black seeds that you had to spit out.
Patrick's mother was a dance teacher and had her own academy. Because in the 60s they were fight about the abortion and some women die because they went to illegal centers. I think the 80s were more explicit in the sex and nudity than today...
Please 🙏 watch Dirty Dancing 2 . Fun fact that saying you were watching when he drove away, the song is called. She’s like the wind and Patrick Swayze wrote and sung that song for this movie.😊
Me lol’ing at you being shocked the first time you saw them dancing provocatively thinking, he forgot the name of the movie 😂 I was 7 when this movie came out and I guess we had liberal parents cuz they let us see it. Again, because of the title they knew what they were getting into so they didn’t cover our eyes lol. Also, ab*rtion was illegal in 1963 so that’s one of the many reasons why they probably wouldn’t have made this movie then. This was a great reaction! Glad you loved it so much 💗
I loved your reaction and commentary throughout the movie. Patrick's mother was a ballet teacher - and he learned ballet at a young age. He's an amazing dancer. Penny was played by the incredible Cynthia Rhodes who was married to singer/songwriter Richard Marx. If you want to see more of her awesome dancing - check out Staying Alive. It's the sequel to Saturday Night Live with John Travolta. Pretty cheesy - but the dancing and soundtrack are incredible. Cheers from Ontario, Canada! :)
This movie was a huge summer hit…and it wasn’t considered scandalous, in fact there was an instant popularity in dance classes. Eta: lol the ‘80s were crazy….drugs & sex abounded.
My mom wouldn't let me or my sister watch this movie growing up because she didn't want us to think it was ok for a guy to treat us the way Robbie treated Penny. Never really understood that reasoning
I suggest looking up the actors who played the mom and dad. There's some Broadway royalty to be seen... ahem, Tony award winning Broadway royalty. I figure you might dig that info as you seem to be very passonate about the craft of acting and movie making. I really dug your passion and perspective on the movie. "Joyful" is one of the reasons why the movie is so beloved. And an apt description. Yet, one I really don't hear being said about this movie. Feel good yes, but to actually pinpoint "joyful" is pretty observant.
This is one of my favourite movies and I loved your reaction to it. ❤️ Great commentary about Baby's character arc and you noticed so many details! Other great 80's movies you might enjoy are Grease with Olivia Newton John and John Travolta and Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere or for a great thriller The sixth sense. Hi from New Zealand 😊
I have to say , after seeing your reaction and commentary to " Brokeback Mountain" , it seemed so very genuine and sincere that I'm now a fan of your reactions!
No one expected much from this movie - a nice little B-movie... Man, it was like a earthquake - I remember staying for tickets in a line that went out from the theater nearly down to the bus stop 😅. It has something magical that draws you in emotionally. Btw. Johnnys frustration while teaching Baby dance was actually very real - Patrick was a professional ballet dancer (he had to quit because an bad injury of his knee) and he was a perfectionist Jennifer was neither and as well much younger than him, not to mention he was in often in a lot of pain because of his knee.
I was 7 when this came out in theaters. I remember some of my friends talking about this movie when it came out on VHS. So, I had to beg my parents for the longest time to be able to watch this movie. They watched it first and they liked it but my mom said, just last summer actually, she no longer liked it after my Dad decided I could watch it. Eye roll! I'm 43! Once I was allowed to watch it, I watched it all the time! Most of the non age appropriate things went right over my head. Which I told my mother so she'd know I wasn't screwed up because I watched this at 8 or 9 years old. I'm pretty sure my dad knew why I wanted to watch it and that a lot of it would go over my head. I had the soundtrack and I'd dance along to the dances as best as I could without a partner. I just liked it for the basic love story but mostly for the dancing.
As of next month, my daughters will be 44 & 41. Dirty Dancing & Grease were 2 of their favorite movies growing up. In their early 20s, after teen years that kept their attention focused on current trends, they were sharing an apt. & decided to revisit films of their past. Of course, both movies mentioned were among them, & I got phone calls after they watched each of them. Suddenly, they were catching & understanding the "non age appropriate things" & were surprised, but even more appreciative, that I let them watch so many years ago.
Jennifer Grey's father is Joel Grey, a fantastic dancer. Check him out in the 1972 Bob Fosse musical CABARET. Also, Jennifer ruined her career by deciding to get a nose job. The results were successful but left her almost unrecognizable.
I watched this quite young maybe 11 but it was my favourite and obv over time understood so much more in the dialogue. though my mother explained to me the abortion scene and the significance of what that meant in the 60s. I also love Patrick Swayze he learnt dance from his mother she owned a dance studio and I believe he also attended ballet school Joffery?
I dont remember abortion was such a big deal in 80s at least not in Yugoslavia where I watched it as kid. Great movie. pure joy with 10/10 character development
It was somewhat provocative, but you have to remember things were a little more racey at this time than you might think. Look at all the heavy metal bands, rock bands, and other movies from this period. I was born in '63 so yes, we were kind of wild
Fun reaction. It’s funny people have such different impressions of the same decade. The 80’s had a wholesome side to it and it was politically conservative time but there was also a really raunchy side to the 80’s, especially with the comedies and some of the slasher flicks. And if you think this is provocative you should see some of the movies from the 70’s. In a lot of ways the 80’s were a conservative rebound from the decadent 70’s.
Loved reaction to this iconic movie ❤️🥰 Can you also do a reaction video to the Classic movie cry baby with Johnny Depp? That would be amazing to Watch 😊😊
1987! Oh-my-god, what a f*cking nightmare!😁... You make it sound like the 50s. Kids today are way more sheltered than then. I could buy cigarettes and alcohol from any shop with a note from my mum(sometimes forged 😉) when she was bedridden after an op. Maybe it's because we all want to think our parents never did the stuff we did, but they did! And as for film, try watching some 80s teen movies and don't forget porn was still being shown cinemas. Could you possibly be reflecting on your own, modern ideals?🤷🧐😁 Oh, almost fogot, the song "She's Like The Wind" was wtitten and performed(?) by Patrick Swayze👍
Oh yeah, we were so-o 'repressed' in 1987. I don't know how I survived the street riots this movie caused. Seriously, check out a filmography for the 1980s. You'll find movies that dealt with much tougher themes than this.
Great reactions, not sure where you got the idea that 80s movies weren’t showing sexualitly. It wasn’t like the 50s. Not a puritanical time at all. Plenty of movies with a lot of skin, snorting coke and gansters saying “Hello to my little friend” while shooting drug cartels with machine guns. It was not a goody goody time for movies.
This movie was not at all provocative in 1987, on the contrary we found it quite lame. Were was the dirty? Don't forget there had been very free times and alternative way of living after flower power. This was however after Aids and a backlash from this free lifestyle.
He acts like 1987 is like the 50s. 🤷🤦 No offense though, I still think you're a nice/likeable guy. Just that statement is kinda dumb. This really wasn't that provocative in 1987.
This wasn't provocative in 1987. This was a kid's movie. I'd say in some ways things are less edgy now. Edgiest in the 70s then things slowly went more vanilla thanks to Focus on the Family and other right-wing movements. I've watched many reactions and most 30-somethings think the money for Penny is for prenatal care...
People never get the classism and supremacy in this movie. The owners and guest are all rich Jews. The waiters are all at minimum upper middle class Jews. And they look down on all the non Jews as trash. The owners son and probably the waiters are only going the the freedom ride because it will look for for jobs, school and small talk with the right people. Some people count. Some people don't.
My favorite movie!!!!!
So happy that Jonathan loved it!!! 😁

RIP, Patrick Swayze, 1952-2009.
He made this one of the sexiest movies ever made.
@shainewhite2781 judging by what was said at the start hopefully we'll get to see them all again. And I hope he adds 'Donnie Darko' to the list. One of my all-time favorites and it was so awesome to see how thoughtful and into this movie you were. Officially subscribed!
I was a kid when this came out. It was considered provocative but it was also very popular. Enjoyed your reaction !

I had this soundtrack on cassette & pretty much wore it out on my Walkman 😊
lol I love the font. Not sure about anymore as I don’t really see too many new movies, but back in the day the opening titles were often significant.

I was 14 living in Brooklyn when Dirty Dancing came out in the summer. Did I go see this every afternoon for 14 straight afternoons? Yup, I sure did.
"It's a musical without the singing." ie a dance-ical. 😂
When it is on our channel is it a popsicle?
I’ll show myself out.
🤣🤣🤣💙@@popcornroulettereactions

The late great Jerry Orbach was the father. Yes he was on a cop show. Not sure I spelled his name correctly.
He was also Lumiere in beauty & the beast.
Believe it or not before they genetically altered watermelons. That is what they normally looked like, they also were filled with black seeds that you had to spit out.
Actually, Jennifer Grey didn't know how to dance before this movie. What you're seeing is him ACTUALLY teaching her.
"I'm pretty sure she just called her sister a communist" 🤣 we've all been there with our siblings

For the record, we weren’t that innocent even in 87!
Me lol’ing at you being shocked the first time you saw them dancing provocatively thinking, he forgot the name of the movie 😂 I was 7 when this movie came out and I guess we had liberal parents cuz they let us see it. Liberal parents would change your gender and cut off your parts..
Pure joy on screen!!!
Now, watch Patrick Swayze again in Point Break, Red Dawn & Roadhouse. Awesome movies for you.
Yes to Point Break and Road House.
Then jump ahead to 'Donnie Darko'😁
I have lived about an hour from the place where they filmed the exterior shots of Kellerman's for 9 years and have yet to visit.
Patrick’s mother was a dance teacher. He’s been dancing since he was pet young. Met his wife at mom’s dance studio.
Loved this reaction!!!
I have to say , after seeing your reaction and commentary to " Brokeback Mountain" , it seemed so very genuine and sincere that I'm now a fan of your reactions!
The thing l like about this movie is that it is so much more than just dance movie!!
Rest in peace to our Cleveland guy Eric Carmen
Three Wishes is another really good Patrick Swayze movie
Jennifer Grey's father is Joel Grey, a fantastic dancer. Check him out in the 1972 Bob Fosse musical CABARET. Also, Jennifer ruined her career by deciding to get a nose job. The results were successful but left her almost unrecognizable.
Hmmm 1987, means I would have been 7 when I first saw this movie. Patrick Swayze was my first actor crush.
Jennifer Grey looks like Laverne Defazio in the Sheldrake performance.
5:00 why was it so easy? Cause hes generally a good father
Sexiest movie ever🔥! Great reaction
I would love to see you react to Closer if you haven’t seen it!
Could you possibly be reflecting on your own, modern ideals?🤷🧐😁
Oh, almost fogot, the song "She's Like The Wind" was wtitten and performed(?) by Patrick Swayze👍
Oh yeah, we were so-o 'repressed' in 1987. I don't know how I survived the street riots this movie caused. Seriously, check out a filmography for the 1980s. You'll find movies that dealt with much tougher themes than this.
Very beautiful young man ❤😊
You talk like 1987 was the bloody dark-ages, man.
For some of us, it was
this was not so provocative in 1987.
Just for the record, those are regular shaped watermelons
You kinda remind me of a young Anthony Perkins. And that's a compliment btw 😊
I think your idea of the 80’s is a little off 😂
There was a lot of nudity and sex in both 80’s and 70’s films.
What 80s movie should we show Jonathan that would shock him the most?
@@popcornroulettereactions Porkys, maybe (but it's not a good movie IMO). Risky Business. Fatal Attraction.
@@popcornroulettereactionsi can see why he loved the movie dirty dancing. Its my favourite ever since i was 6
This movie was not at all provocative in 1987, on the contrary we found it quite lame.
This was rated PG 13! Things were much racier in the 80's.
Hmm, let me think 'Dirty Dancy". Seem like a dance movie. Hmm.
After this, pretty woman should have been the follow up
... Two girls dancing could just be friends. I don't think that part was provocative.
