  • The Super Mario series has some of the most beloved games of all time. The Super Mario Bros. series esentially set the standard for gaming as we know it. The New Super Mario Bros. series was designed to reinvent the 2D games for a new generation. But the series has become known for being stale and repetative. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is often seen as the start of the generic Super Mario era. In this retrospective, I am joined by Starcronix to cover the most misunderstood Mario game.

    WARNING: Unpopular Opinion Oncoming! The mini mushroom was actually really cool! You can run across water and even walls in the later games! It makes beach levels and levels with rising and lowering water so much more interesting! You even get a much floatier jump and skip the stage, but to balance it out, you die in one hit. You have to be strategic and skilled to use it right! It's so interesting. The fire flower almost never has any downsides, but you have to think a little more before you use a mini mushroom or not. It also presents a fun challenge against bosses, as seen in the DS game. The mini mushroom just offers a new way to play with Mario and I appreciate it for that!

    To me, NSMBU felt like someone on the dev team wanted to make it more original, but the executives couldn't let go of Wii. For example, all the worlds being food-themed in some way, the beach levels looking more like some kind of mountain watering hole than beaches, the random painted ghost world in the middle of Soda Jungle, and the final world being Peach's Castle instead of just the ordinary volcano. But again, the executives wanted to capitalize on Wii as much as possible, so it watered down all these fresh ideas to make them barely noticeable.

    • @calebdonaldson8770
      @calebdonaldson8770 2 года назад +12

      Yeah, it's pretty obvious playing through U that it heavily reuses a lot of the ideas, secrets, and level tropes of NSMBWii. NSMBU has pretty good level design, but it's not radically new or anything like that. If you've played the previous game, you'll find things quite familiar and know how to find stuff. NSMBWii introduced mechanics like the hidden wall, star world, and 4-player Mario. NSMBU didn't introduce any game mechanic of this calibre.

    • @trymetrix857

    • @calebdonaldson8770
      @calebdonaldson8770 2 года назад +10

      @@trymetrix857 The one thing U did really well was an improved visual aesthetic compared to the past 3 games. My biggest complaint with Wii was that it failed to introduce new world themes or a dramatically different art style. In all fairness, U did succeed in making an interconnected overworld, though it doesn't compare to World's, and is more like a patchwork quilt of the worlds from Wii, instead of a realistic place.

    • @trymetrix857
      @trymetrix857 2 года назад +6

      @@calebdonaldson8770 I actually have to disagree with this. I find U less visually appealing as I find the settings are just somehow more bland and feel less Mario and more Generic Platformery in my opinion. Plus- I prefered there not being an interconnected world map as it felt like you were traveling miles between making it more realistic then sand and snow right ontop of eachother. Additional thing is the world maps in Wii were super unique compared to U (especially mountain).

    NSMBW was really fresh and hype when it came out in 2009 and it really felt "new". This game introduced me to mario alongside mario kart wii, mario galaxy, and super mario world for the GBA. The DS version that came out years before was also really awesome with all the mini games and whatnot, and the wii version was different enough and still tried things nintendo hadn't done yet instead of just a half assed port. Nintendo was really pushing out quality games at the time with Mario 64 ds as well and some of the other stuff from that era. The first time was because the game resembled Twelve Tales: Conker 64 and I was upset with Microsoft and the second time was I think because I was upset that the company went out of their way to copyright strike my meme uploads on their soundtrack when they owned none of the audio, they literally only copyright striked it because of the picture on the video and the title... It's a small world, lol...
      Anyway, I do agree that Newer Super Mario Bros Wii shows the game is an excellent template for rom hacking, even if I'm not the biggest fan of NSMB Wii myself, I think the Newer Super Mario Bros Wii rom hack is a pretty cool rom hack. I haven't gotten the chance to hack New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but if I can change the playable characters from Mario, Luigi, Buckenbarry and Ala Gold into four of the Koopalings (Larry over Mario of course, unless they have slightly different weights, then Larry would have to be over one of the Toads for it to make sense, but I don't think they have any slight differences in weight, so I'm probably good with Larry over Mario) then I can probably see for myself what kind of potential rom hacking NSMB Wii provides. To see if I can make something as different with it as I can with Super Mario 64 DS... Not sure that's possible actually to be honest, lol, but then again, maybe it is possible, I don't know for sure, lol...

      @@wantedasylum1091 Good to see you again as well. I'd say that for me, if I remember correctly, the discussion was in 2017 or 2018? I've been honing my skills on rom hacking SM64DS and I went from being really bad at it to making a fan game so weird and different out of it, hahah! (I even have a plethora of fully voice acted cutscenes working in SM64DS, granted the original had two, but my hack has a lot more, since my hack is replicating the style and presentation of Conker's Bad Fur Day by telling a story through it's ingame cutscenes, lol) Still been working on the same rom hack though, my first rom hack doesn't even look like a first anymore, of course that's because I'm a perfectionist and had to make sure it's perfect, as in, make sure it's close enough to being exactly what I had in mind, lmao!

      NSMB Wii is far superior. Has the amazing tricky style of level design, charm and exploration that Mario 3 had to offer. Mario Wonder is just either visual gimmicks or downgraded Rayman effects gameplay.I love Wonder a lot but is still nowhere near good as NSMB Wii, Mario 3 and Super Mario World.

    U also fixes a lot of the issues i had with wii. It makes the bosses more varried and difficult and has better difficulty balancing.

    So I never personally liked this game and never understood the love it gets compared to the other NSMB games. I always assumed it was just nostalgia for the Wii.
    My main problems with NSMBW are the emptier levels due to multi-player, the visuals looking really weird (some of the tilesets like the sandy beach tileset just don't look good), the lack of content compared to the other games, and having to play with the Wiimote (which is the worst Nintendo controller imo). It also just feels off. I constantly mess up jumps when they would've been really easy to do in any other 2D Mario. I rarely go back to it since I don't really have fun playing it
    NSMBU just does everything better, but I understand that when that game came out everyone was tired of the NSMB games and that it barely added anything new

    Even though this game is my childhood, I have to respectfully disagree. This game is great, don’t get me wrong. But the earlier levels of the game are very open to apply four players, but it's boring as a result. They didn't really learn to hone their skills with 4 player levels until New Super Mario Bros. U.
    The worlds are still your generic themes that don’t connect to each other like any typical Mario game. World's levels are different and connected in a way that you are immersed into feeling like you're actually on an island.
    The item set is too OP, allowing you to hold up to 99 of each type of item. Heck, you’ll earn three mushrooms for each enemy gauntlet you beat. And they are so common that you can basically start with a mushroom on each level. Meanwhile, Super Mario World just had one item held at the top screen which would be stored and dropped if you're in danger. Because of Wii’s system, the game doesn’t actually get hard until World 9 while World has a better difficulty.
    Yoshi, despite being on the front of the box, is very rare in this game, only appearing in one level of each world except 8 and 9. Sure, he gained the ability to flutter like in Yoshi's Island. That's nice, but other than that, he's heavily downgraded. He no longer gains unique abilities for each colored shell he eats (and blue and yellow koopas don’t appear), there are different colors but they don’t differ from one another in gameplay, and you can't take him outside the level you get him from. Pretty lame.
    In World, you can access the secret worlds BEFORE beating Bowser if you so wish. In Wii, TOO BAD! Beat Bowser first!
    World introduced all sorts of cool new enemies and variations of existing enemies. Wii brings very few of these enemies back (the ones that did, became series staples), and the new enemies are all just larger variations of existing ones.
    Really, the only things Wii has over World is the multiplayer and a bigger soundtrack variation. I still really enjoy the game, but I wouldn't say it's the BEST 2D Mario.

    • @frozenburst64
      @frozenburst64 2 года назад +12

      While I can partially agree with some of your points, I still disagree with some too.
      The earlier levels may be boring at times, but the majority of games are like that and for a good reason. It will give time for players of all kinds to be able to get used to the controls, and the idea of how to play. Sure if you learn quickly, it may be boring, but this can help people who take time to fully understand the game and its mechanics.
      Sure, the worlds are partially generic, that is why they added more to them to make them more unique. But all a connection in worlds does is a little attention to detail, it doesn't help me connect more to the game from my experience.
      The item set is actually perfectly balanced, it is just a non-setting difficulty selector. Do you want the game to be challenging? Ignore all the power-ups given. Do you want it to be less hard? Use power-ups when you can. This gives room for pros to be pros while noobs aren't getting their butt kicked every minute. And with the large amount you can hold, it prevents you from going back and forth to grind power-ups if you want to do a certain power-up challenge. And even if choosing not to use a power-up still makes a game "too easy", I thankfully found out that while a challenge is fun, a good game does not require one to still be good.
      Yes, Yoshi barely being in the game is a little misleading from how he seemed like a big deal on the cover. But it was something Nintendo did and improved on after NSMB Ds, where the mega mushroom was only in 4 levels, and the only way to take them to another level was through a toad house and having it in your inventory slot. I don't agree with their choices of semi-misleading covers, but they were moving away from that fairly quickly.
      I don't see anything wrong with needing to beat a game before you unlock the secret world. In fact it may be an improvement. Because if you didn't find all the secrets in the level, you will need to go back to previous ones and truly explore them to find all the collectibles. Which will give players time to appreciate some things in levels they may have overlooked.
      While new enemies in NSMB Wii are usually just bigger variants of others, they add to them to make them completely change the gameplay. Much like how the giant wiggler is now a giant moving bouncy platform that won't get angry from you bouncing on it, or the King Bills that cannot be killed no matter what and destroy anything in their path.
      Some things in SMW are better than NSMB Wii, like the ability to take Yoshi into other levels. But I believe that Wii deserves more credit that it seems like you are giving it.

    • @Jann75
      @Jann75 2 года назад +4

      I respectfully disagree. Honestly, I feel like most of these aren't even flaws per se and moreso just "this game takes a different approach to X, and I like the other approach more, ergo flaw." e.g. SMW has a secret World while this game has a bonus world approach, flaw." The Secret World in SMW fit with the game's giant theme of secret exits, it was not in any way a prerequisite that a Mario game is lacking without. And even though I admittedly like SMW's approach more, I respect their decision to make him in single levels actually. I think Demeech said it best, it's not that they just being silly idiots making the random inexplicable decision to cut Yoshi to prank us, but it was just simple design decision to make Yoshi a level gimmick instead of a power up. And I can understand taking a new approach, you may say "well being different is bad if you just make things worse", but the more I think about it, I think this might've actually been the best choice. Yoshi, especially with the flutter jump has the potential to cheese levels, and the potential to take Yoshi out of levels worked better with SMW's more "freeform" style, I mean, the game has a level where you can go any time to get infinite free powerups, almost every level has a big sky, the cape feather in general, etc Just a general feeling that you could take a lot of things anywhere. And as for shells, that's a weird argument considering that NO game had shells before or after SMW. All the stuff involving shells in that kind of felt like that game's running gag, and fit with the game's "style"-Kamikaze Koopas alone are proof of that-so I don't even want that in the first place since can you even imagine Blue Shell Yoshi or hell Blue Yoshi in NSMBW's levels, never mind taking "this will break levels" to a whole new one, without just flat out redesigning the whole game to have SMW's level style? (starting to see the pattern here?); it's inclusion would just take away from SMW unless significantly changed. It feels like you didn't want a sequel to NSMBDS, but a sequel to SMW, if that makes sense Which is ironic considering that I always saw this game as taking a lot of it's elements from SMB3, while NSMBU took a lot of elements from SMW. There is a difference between something being a flaw, and something being different. But none of that's my main argument: Yoshi was one of SMW's gimmicks, he was on the box art of SMW (he technically still is here but I digress), he was created in the game's conceptual phase. They wouldn't want to make him essentially a power up in NSMBW because he would consume the game and distract from the things they otherwise wanted to focus on like the Propeller Mushroom. Yoshi already was the gimmick of a game; his inclusion would inherently distract from this game's gimmicks unless they put less emphasis on him. Which is what they did. I can prove this too,what is one of NSMBU's gimmicks? The baby yoshis. You can take them out of levels as well and they are all over the games trailers and you clearly were intended to use them to a large extent. Keep in mind that most people nowadays flat out don't really use them in the first place, and they are still one of the main things the game is associated with outside of the opinions on it. And I feel like I'm even more confident in thinking this considering the only counterargument I've ever seen from others or myself on this is "people REALLY like Yoshi".
      Furthermore, I disagree with your statement that the Power-Ups are too OP (which is ironic considering the Yoshi statements). The game being way too easy until World 9 is just a strange claim to me, you make it seem like there's massive difficulty spike when really the progression is smooth enough where if you're saying you can World 8 blindfolded, then World 9 should only be somewhat harder. But as for saying that the Item Collection breaks the game (which I don't get since the Item Collection thing was in SMB3), Mario has always been a game of easy to steamroll with even easier to lose, even speedrunners often lose their propeller suit (which I feel like eliminates any room for counterargument). And as someone who has played the game before, to play devil's advocate and say that you can say whatever you want on levels often giving you what you need at the beginning of the level, a point you didn't make, but let me tell you that if you're already struggling on a level, bringing in a power up isn't going to automatically going to beat the level for you. The powerups in actual practice are mostly too situational to be an automatic win for you, you'll still have to encounter its vices and not getting hit even once on a level you were already struggling on, and a lot of this game's annoying shit can't be solved with fire/ice. Also, though they're easier to get than in SMB3, power-ups except for the Mushroom are easy to run out of if you're spamming them, even if you use the mini-game trick like I did. And let me tell you Mushrooms aren't free wins either: they're Mushrooms, they're just free hit, there's a reason why the game gives you so many (Though I think the game does give too many). They're functionally a free band-aid if you're really struggling on a level. Keep in mind that this power up is merely the state you will be in when the level begins, not a not something you can just pop in the middle of the level. Speaking of, as for the Item Reserve complaint, this isn't Super Mario World. Granted NSMBDS, had one so you have a point here, but I think the SMB3 Item Menu, and the SMW Item Reserve are meant juxtapose each other, and including both in a game would actually be OP. Plus, the former works better for this game's multiplayer approach, despite the latter working better for the SM3DW's multiplayer approach, strangely enough.

    New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the first game I got on a pre-order. I'd say that it was worth it; it is now my second favorite 2D Mario and 15th favorite game ever!
    As you and Star pointed out, this game came out before Nintendo got a little too happy with modern 2D platformers. As such, seeing things like the Koopalings in 3D and four-player co-op was refreshing.
    I love the aesthetic of the NSMB games, with Wii being the coolest example of it. Unfortunately, it's glaring to see that the general opinion has soured on New Soup's art style, but Wii was a good improvement from the already nice look used in DS. Plus, the Koopalings got in-game voice acting.
    I played through this romp again a couple of weeks ago, and it just felt good. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is magical. If I have any critiques, it's that the Mega Mushroom is gone, I wish Yoshi was used more often, I wanted Luigi and the Toads playable in single player, and multiplayer (especially with four people) is chaotic.
    Super Mario Bros. 3 is my favorite 2D Mario, but New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a nice, close second. Great job giving the game some justice in this review, Demeech.

    I’m willing to agree that this game is the best New Super Mario Bros game but there is no reason given as to how it could possibly live up to the original 2D Mario games. In my opinion Super Mario Bros 3 is the best 2D Mario game, because it perfectly evolves the Mario formula just enough without being too alienating. The complete overhaul of the physics system and use of the world map makes the game so much more interesting than the first games, and the construction of the levels themselves makes the game infinitely replayable. Every single time I play Super Mario Bros 3 I find something new about the game, whether that be a secret room or a hidden power up every time it makes me excited to play the game again to find something else completely new. Pretty much all the New Super Mario’s construct their levels in a way that encourages you to find every secret in the first or second play through, meaning your interest in any individual level is pretty much done once you’ve gotten the Star Coins. It’s very style over substance in that regard. Sure, Wii has very interesting level gimmicks, but in the grand scheme of things they just don’t contribute too much because it’s cooler to look at all of these gimmicks than it is to play them. Stuff like travelling along cliff faces and navigating on teetering logs sound and look like fun, but then when you play them they’re just sort of a distraction, pretty much every level gimmick I can think of in this game slows you down in one way or another. That’s what most of the earlier Mario’s do better in my opinion, be short and sweet, none of the levels really overstay their welcome, you’re constantly bouncing between environments and ideas because they didn’t really restrict the levels themes as much as they do in the News.
    I don’t think the New Super Mario Bros games could ever live up to the original Super Mario games, because the whole series just lacks this heart and substance that really makes a Mario game and every single New Soup really lacks its own identity. There’s nothing that compels me to play a New Super Mario Bros game over the old 2D Mario games, because even at their absolute best they’re so repetitive and same-y that even their most interesting level gimmick feels like another flash in the pan. So yeah, maybe New Super Mario Bros Wii is the best New Super Mario Bros game, but I can’t think of any reason why it could surpass games like World and 3.

    I don't get what makes this the best Mario game taking all your points into account. According to the review, it does everything right that almost every other Mario game gets right. Has some unique bosses and features, although it's never really explained why or how these make an impact on the game that improves it beyond being call backs. I feel like if your going to explain why something is the best or even why it's good you have to elaborate, give more specific examples and compare it to its competitors or other entries in the series. Some parts of the review are well done but a lot of it is just spent listing things down. This is where I'm going to show by bias against the game but I really don't see the arguements for difficulty or variety. Pretty much every level of every world looks exactly the same, even world 3 which has cool overcasts doesn't change beyond tinting grey. And the game is really piss easy, there are constantly powerups showing up and even in the last few worlds challenges don't get mixed together that well or often. Some parts were cool, like the glaciers in world 3 and the propeller blocks.
    It would've been cool to hear why you enjoy the level design a little more since I enjoyed that part despite disagreeing. Like, almost every Mario game changes its enemies or mechanics depending on the mechanic and Wii doesn't do anything remarkable or really brilliant to stick out in this regard. Maybe mention a few favorite stages or secrets you really enjoyed finding or playing through. Again, you kinda list off random examples before I'm exactly sold in the level design even pulling by bias behind.
    I love hearing different perspectives on games and it's why I like reviews like this, but you could improve for future reviews. And, admittedly I did enjoy the review partially.

    Yeah, I’ve got to disagree here.
    Mario Wii is mainly held up by strings and powerful thing called nostalgia. I also wouldn’t call it misunderstood, from what I’ve seen, it’s seems like one of the most overrated Mario games out there. It’s level design is overly basic and made mainly to fit multiplayer, with there being a lot of wasted space. Interesting concepts were introduced, but they were not used to their full potential. It’s backgrounds are pretty unappealing. The multiplayer is extremely chaotic. The Propellor Suit can be too OP at times, with it being able to just skip over portions of a level. But y’know what, all this can be forgiven because Mario Wii has the one thing we all love- forced motion controls! Plus, Mario Wii probably has the least amount of content out of the Story Mode from any NSMB game. NSMBDS has multiple minigames and the Mario vs. Luigi mode. NSMB2 has Coin Rush mode and DLC. NSMBU has Challenge Mode, Boost Rush, Coin Battle, and DLC. NSMBW only has Coin Battle and Free for All, with the Free for All mode not even being that new, with it simply being levels from the story mode with points tallied up individually. NSMBU, while yes mostly more of the same, improves on almost every front from NSMBW; story, graphics, level design, world map, extra modes, extra world map missions, controls, etc. And logically, I don’t know about NSMB2, but NSMBU, Luigi U, and most likely NSMBDS seem of higher quality than Wii.

    Out of all the New Super Mario Bros. games, this is the one that I liked the most. And DS as well. But that's another topic for later. While it's nowhere near as amazing as the likes say Mario 3, World or even Land 2 due to them being more original & having unique ways of game design, I did somewhat have an heartwarming touch to the game that is simply fun. As thats what's most important. Having fun. It also things way more unique and different than the other New Super Mario Bros; despite being an counterpart to the DS original. Both DS & Wii are the ones that I would go back and play multiple times. As 2 & Wii U really overstated it's welcome and weren't as fun.

    My favorite thing to do in this game in multiplayer is to pick up towed cuz I'm always player one in Mario and then throw them into lava or throw them off the cliff or eat the other players with Yoshi and spit them out or carry them for the whole level

    New Super Mario Bros. Wii is super boring. Everytime I play it, I get bored halfway through a world. It is far from the best 2D Mario. New Super Mario Bros. Wii's music is also just really bland compared to it's predecessor. The presentation is lifeless as hell. And I can't forgive this game for the domino effect it's success had on the franchise for almost a decade. I have nostalgia for this game, but I'm not blinded by it. Maybe I'm just spoiled by vastly superior Mario-likes like SuperTux, Super Marisa World, and New Super Marisa Land and that's why I have higher expectations, but honestly, this is Nintendo's mascot. Why on Earth does his games look like this in comparison to Mario-likes, imitations of the series? This game is so overrated IMO.

    Mario Wonder just feels too fleshed out, I hate when people hate on the Koopalings in the NSMB series, but the bosses in Mario Wonder are the most rushed, and I cant even call them bosses, the worst bosses in any 2D Mario, the only thing it has going for it is Bowser Jr. and a stupid conveyor belt with a Bowser head. At least the final boss in Wonder is good enough, it feels like the final boss in DKC Returns but with Bowser being it instead. Mario Wonder is hard to enjoy when the levels arent challenging for the most part, I know the levels are mostly very fleshed out in Mario Wonder, but sometimes simple means better, and thats why I prefer NSMBWii. Id say NSMBWii is the hardest NSMB game in the series if we ignore NSLU, I get people may not be a fan of the level design in NSMBWii, but its just so fun to play with 4 players. I feel like the music in NSMBWii is much better than Mario Wonder's music, call me nostalgic blinded, but I just have more memories with NSMBWii, its just a much more memorable game, and I forget Mario Wonder exists. NSMBWii's soundtrack was so good that NSMB2 and NSMBU reused a lot of its soundtrack. The multiplayer in Mario Wonder is horrible, what made the multiplayer so fun in NSMBWii is the fact that you were able to kill each other, it just made the experience a fun chaos, and I have a lot of memories about it. Call me nostalgic blinded, and id like to hear you argue with me.

      Only bad things about nsmbw is that if you exclude the final boss the bosses arent that good or not that challenging compared to the others nsmb games expect for nsmb2 and the level design feels bland if your not playing with 3 or 4 players and the controls. the last reason is how nostalgia bias this game is. The good things are the multiplayer the music the power ups the ability to play with a nunchuck and the final boss and the hint movies.

      @@Milesishere484 I like the Ludwig and the last two Bowser Jr. Bosses tho, and the abilities such as the propeller mushroom, the ice flower, and the penguin suit were welcoming additions since the power ups in NSMBDS were so lame. I get why the level design is so bland, I think NSMBU does a better job of balancing the level design for both single and multiplayer, but I prefer the level design in NSMBWii since it felt more flushed out at the time.

    New Super Mario Bros Wii is one of the greatest video games of all time. It was something new, fresh, unique, inventive, stylish, cool, edgy, hip, and updated such due to it's gameplay, graphics, and levels as it was so fun and innovative. It was decent. To this day I still play it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍💯😎👍

    I wouldn't say it's the best considering Newer Wii as an option (it is far better than Wii) but sure it is an amazing adventure to experience. And though subsequent games have their own cool mechanics, this still remains the most fun among the 4 games of the series.
