      It didn’t start like that, if you watch series 1 Greg is actually pretty nice to Alex and it just turned more into Greg being horrible to Alex as the show went on because it was funnier.
      So based on the original format, Alex made all the tasks, oversaw them, and took zero blame of people were upset or didn’t like it since he wasn’t the Taskmaster. It’s genius actually.

      I believe Steven Fry once said in an interveiw that most Brittish actors prefer to play the fool, because it makes for a more interesting character.
      David Letterman also said the same sort of thing with Norm Mcdonald, quoting that you shouldnt be seen as the smartest guy in the room as the host of a show.

    I love the fact that Alex lets Greg be the face of the show so all the complaints and whining goes to him instead, despite the person writing and setting the tasks being actually Alex.

      I think in one interview Alex let everyone in on it. He said that he didn't want to be the face because that would take the part of designing the tasks away from him. He likes that part because he is very methodical. On the other hand, Greg was a choice early on, even more so because of the fact he is very off the cuff.

      I mean most of the time they whine about the task is DURING the task and usually Alex is there so they take it out on him. They only complain about Greg to disagree with his judgments. So I don't think any of that is actually being diverted.

      @@jenk289 yeah sure, that too. That why I said "one reason"
      definitely not the only one.
      But I disagree with ur opinion that americans can't laugh at themselves. Maybe the average american is not as quick witted as an average Brit. But at the end that's all just generalization. I have friends in the US that have a very similar humour to me. Also most of the contestants in the US taskmaster were just obnoxious unfunny idiots. If they put genuinely funny comedians and another taskmaster in the show i think it could result in a maybe even equally funny show. Americans can make themselves the butt of the joke, one example is conan o brien, who in my opinion is hilarious. It is an unfair assumption to say americans in general can't be funny in that way
      Still, I agree. British televion and comedy has a unique Charme to it, hardly seen elsewhere. I just don't like the generalization, especially in such a character driven game show

The format being cut down to 20 minutes and prize task being changed entirely both hurt the show much more than any sort of culture gap. The first episode of the US version is absolutely its weakest as well, so that doesn't really help people's impressions of it. Reggie Watts quickly comes into his own as the Taskmaster, though, and works the role for some good laughs throughout. The tasks are absurd but i think the fun part is that the contestants have the autonomy to decide what they'll do and the hilarity is in the difference between what they think will happen vs. what actually happens. Here's an observation: Editor Thomas Perrett is the arguably the most important person on the show. He gets to present someone's task attempt in a certain way. The choices we make as editors in how a story is told can have a completely different outcome on a person's reaction to it. I'd love to know how they don't end up presenting a false narrative, such as compressing time or not showing certain things. Or maybe they DO, because they want the reaction in the studio recordings, and we don't realise that it can be massaged?
    This hurts my brain to think about.

    • @chrism45
      @chrism45 4 года назад +64

      For sure a huge part of the comedy is due to the editing. Since it's pre-recorded he has to make sure not to misrepresent their humour and keep the comedians style and humour. That means the editor must be familiar with their work and comedic timing

    • @YodaXIII
      @YodaXIII 4 года назад +5

      they just look for when they decide how to do a task, and then any changes they make to their approach. It's such a simple concept but of course it would work. Getting 5 quirky and interesting comedians together for something so completely frivolous and fun, while having that little sprinkling of competitiveness and trepidation for the audience, is a winning combination. The imagination of the show is one of the best things about it, but seeing some participants finding ways to read between the lines to find loopholes is absolutely my favourite aspect of it. I love considering the challenge and contemplating potential loopholes the way Gilbert, Perkins and Osman all did.

    Taskmaster is one of the pure joys my family and I discovered on a trip to the UK last year. We were staying in an AirBnB in Windsor that had cable television and we watched Dave TV any time we were not out seeing the local sights. We absolutely loved Taskmaster and QI, two shows you don't ever hear about in the States. So glad we can watch it on RUclips now.

    Alex : "I came up with an idea and refined it until it was successful enough Avalon thought it might be a TV thing"
    Andy Devonshire : "We took the idea and refined it until it was an idea".
    Those that can, do, those that can't, take all the credit.

    I've watched clips of the other taskmaster shows and while the taskmaster/assistant duos are excellent in their own right, I can't help but feel that Greg/Alex are the perfect duo for this show. Greg's assertive grandeur and Alex's enthusiastic timidness adds so much character and gives something for the comedians to riff off of. Otherwise it just feels like a bunch of people in a room watching VODs and talking at each other.

    I'm American and have recently discovered this show. My mom and I love it! I know these comedians and hosts are just being silly, but their silliness and humour make me forget about my illnesses for a bit and let's me just laugh. Im smiling the whole way through the show. I love seeing how different people interpret the challenges differently. I love the banter between Greg and Alex!

    I swear this is the only TV show that I watch over and over again and laugh like it's the first time I've ever seen it. Noel fielding was hilarious on it and him disgusting himself in the caravan is one of my all time favorites. All round hilarious show. Long may it continue ❣❣
