As always, you are responsible for your own intelligence. Tiger Lilies are 𝗻𝗼𝘁 the same as Day Lilies. Here's some more good info if you want to educate yourself further: gardenandhappy.com/9-huge-differences-between-poisonous-tiger-lilies-and-day-lilies
Rachel, I've learned so much from you on this channel! Thank you for this wonderful, informational video. I had no idea that this could be done with day lilies. My grandmother literally had a field full. I wonder if she knew of their use way, way back then? 🤔
I have to try this. -- Funny story about these flowers, They are my husband and mine flower. That came about when we were dating back in late 70's we always passed them on the road side and I stated how I love them. One date night he came to pick me up, he handed me a bouquet of these. When I went to take them I notice a stream of blood running down his arm. He had sliced his hand, He stated his jackknife was dull. After several bandaid we went on our way out to eat. Since then It became our flower.
I see those jars next to your lily bowl....I'm sure it's something you've done a previous video on but we all like to just hear you chatter when you're canning, so.....when you're in the kitchen, please just video & talk! Even if it's something you've shown us before! All your ramblings are very enjoyable & educational 🤓🥰 Thanks!
Oh dear lady, this looks so wonderful and tomorrow I will head out to my enormous patch of daylilies to make some of this syrup. Daily I use two of daylily flowers like a tortilla. I stuffed them with chickweed, elder flowers, purple clover flowers, crushed lentils, fermented hot sauce and dandelion greens. and flowers. Delicious!
NO WAY!!! I had NO idea -- thank you so much for this video!! We have tons of them growing and I always assumed they were just pretty. Now I know -- I can hardly wait to go harvest them and make my own syrup! You are amazing!!!!!!!!
Rachel I haven’t heard that you can make syrup from day Lilly’s before. I usually make jelly from red bud flowers and dandelion flowers. And last year I made corn cob syrup after watching you make it. I watched Stacy from Off grid with Doug and Stacy. Make a Frittata from Rose of Sharon flowers and leaves. That is 2 more ways to be self sufficient from things you can harvest from your land, love it!!!
My grandmother called him ditch Lilly is also. My son‘s favorite flower I love them too. When we first moved into our home almost 38 years ago my daughter went around and collected daylilies, Queen Anne’s lace and native black eyed Susans. Still my favorite combination of wildflowers.
I went driving along the road side yesterday hunting for daylilys. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get that many, but I found enough to make three jars worth today. They turned out so delicious! Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe with all of us. I've really gotten into this year making jellies from edible flowers, and I love adding this syrup to that recipe collection! It will be definetly one I'll be doing every year from now on. I also made red clover jelly which is sooooo good too. Since we have so much clover all around us, I plan on teaching our grandkids that will be visiting next week how to pick and make white clover jelly too. Keep these unique recipes coming! :)
You have such interesting and fun ideas of things to can. Never thought of making syrup from flowers. I loved your comment about not washing the flowers.😃
Love this, we have dipped our toe into foraging and really love it! Such a great way to to send an afternoon with the kids. As someone who doesn’t have that problem they look beautiful! Something I would have in my garden! Some persons weed is another’s flower
Such a wonderful idea / recipe for the Day Lilies syrup , my neighbor has them in the back yard and front also. A gathering I will go , he will tell me to go ahead and I will offer up a bottle of syrup.Have a great week...
Thanks to you Rachel, I had my 1st day lily yesterday after watching your video and today collected a bunch and will make syrup tomorrow. Thanks for helping me be more self sustainable! Love you guys!
Now this one is fascinating! I may need to add day lilies here. I have made honeysuckle jelly and this year I did clover. thank lIm very curious about daylily. Those jars are adorable!
I had no idea! Daylilys have gone past in my area so I will add it to my next years list. BUT for now I am EXTREMELY INTRIGUED by your “ coffee maker” !!! Please do a video explaining it!!
Mind Blown!!! Daylillies/ditch lillies are my favorite wild flower. Sadly they are at the end of their season here in mid- Missouri. I am going to add this to my list of to do's for next year. Thank you for sharing. Love your channel!
Who knew? As a child, my dad always called them weeds and ultimately destroyed the patch around our large roadside tree. If my mom had known this, I’ll bet the day lilies would have been preserved. Thanks for a great video, Rachel.
Hi Rachel. I had no idea that day lily was edible! I walk by mine every day and never knew. I make dried candied hibiscus flowers because of their terrific flavor. Hope to make this syrup very soon! Thank you.
Oh my goodness, awsome idea. Thanks so much for sharing. I always thought people got tired of these lilies and just through them in the ditches...lol..I always called them ditch lilies too like Todd..lol. Definitely going to see if there are any left out in the countryside and try this.🙏❤
I had no idea!!! I am going outside and trying one tomorrow. I tried lilac jelly this year for the first time and it was such a pleasant surprise. Now I will have to see what I am missing with Daylilies.
You just saved my day lilies from being ripped out of my backyard. I've always thought that they were toxic and since I'm not the biggest fan of how they look, I was going to rip them out to make some space in my tiny garden. Since they are edible and tasty, they are here to stay now!
Hi Rachel. I wish that I could do that, but I live in the projects. We don't have things like this in my area. That syrup looks good to me. Thank you Rachel for sharing this video. Stay Safe. Maria. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Trying this now! Steeping until tomorrow and excited to have this in my pantry! We use syrup and honey to bring my childs blood sugar up (fast acting carb) when he drops really low (type 1 diabetic child). He is excited to try it next time he drops! Thank you!
Aw, I was hoping the cultivated many color and styles versions were also tasty. Smaller plants that I can tolerate taking up space! Have none right now, because it's hard to justify 'just' flowers in the good soil areas. My parents had both kinds, but being daylily fans, we were only eating the messy old fashioned ones. They oohed and aahed over the other kind, every single day, until well past prime. lol Just raw off the plant though. I don't think a single one ever made it into the house. So good raw! Our favorites were the plump buds right before they would have opened for the day. Interesting about the thick syrup though. Somehow I'd never considered cooking any of the florals down that far. Looked good the next day. :)
I had never tasted the flowers until about 3 months ago. I want my plants to spread so I will have more flowers because I love them. Now I will have to make some syrup.
Wow! That’s so cool! We just purchased land & are building a house & homestead on it. I planted a small garden since we are focusing on building the house & other structures. But I am definitely putting Daylillies on my list of plants to plant soon!💕🌻
I had no idea Daylilies were edible! Now I must find some bulbs to plant in my yard ASAP! Those jars are so cute, I love them. Your syrup looks so good. Thank you for sharing.
Very neat. I was inspired earlier in the spring by a fellow gardener to make Peony jelly. Same process really, but with pectin added. Quite floral, gorgeous colour. You've further inspired me to now find myself some daylilies!
I'm sorry I keep commenting I hope you don't get sick of me! At!! The only flower I have ever eaten in e Dish is a hibiscus!! It is absolutely amazing flavor!! God Bless!!
This is a great idea! But I would make sure your township doesn’t spray pesticides along the road. Getting them in the woods or somewhere you know they don’t spray is good.🥰
I really love this. I made some last year And this year I'm blocking all of my hillaries off every day before they Wilt. The stuff I made last year almost has a slight cinnamon candy taste
I have sautéed the pods in butter with just salt and pepper and they were delicious! My day lilies didn’t do well this year due to lack of rain. I was really hoping for a nice harvest to try freezing some to see how they would do.
Awesome I did not know they were edible...ive made a bunch of syrup this last week..and I have day lillies. I'm so do this..thank you so much .amazing.

Take up the roots in the fall put 3 bulbs back in the ground from each batch

just make sure they are day lilies not asiatic lilies. Those ones are toxic. If the leaves grow from the ground safe, if they grow from the stem toxic
My grandmother's favorite flower ❤
