  • Sailing my Albin Vega 27 (1789) from Largs to Holyhead via the Isle of Man and the sketchy Calf Sound. With me my friend Dave second time sailing... a baptism of fire for him.
    West Scotland is a wonderful place to sail, beautiful landscapes and many anchorages, the weather can be quite tough.
    The North Channel and the Irish Sea are notorious for strong currents, tides and overfalls. A very careful passage planning is needed to take advantage of the tidal streams.
    Original tracks played by me apart from "the dock of the bay" by Otis Redding played by Dave.

    Those little Albins have sailed around the world. Stiff on the wind and built like a brick house, they get you where you want to go. It is the Only boat under 32' feet that I'd consider a blue water sailer. Nice video. Find one in a yard somewhere, fix it up, and you are better off than most who poured out the big bucks.

      No, at Cemaes. I can see the bay from my house and always take a look at what's at anchor in the bay.

    Beautifull video. And you surely convinced me that buying a Vega is a brilliant idea! I'll do it!!! With or without the guitar

    • @andreafabi4135
      @andreafabi4135  6 лет назад

      Thanks! Nice that I inspired you to go for a Vega. They are excellent boats and cheap to buy. Good as a first boat, but also proven blue water boat. There are many around and the community is quite active. On the downside they are a bit small compared to modern standards and a bit temperamental in reverse with the standard configuration (see my other video). I can get along with this compromise. Good luck!

    • @sren5069
      @sren5069 6 лет назад

      :-) Heard about the temperamental reverse but decided to take it as a challenge. After all I don't buy a boat to go backward. Hope next year to pot a video on Doing the Isefjord, Denmark

    Excellent video and music. It is a shame that there will be no more videos from the Clyde :( I am planning a trip next year from Holy Loch to the Isle of Man to watch the TT Races. How long did it take you to cross from Portpatrick to the Isle of Man? Also, looking back at your passage from Largs to Isle of Man, is there anything you would have done different? Cheers Paul

    • @andreafabi4135
      @andreafabi4135  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comment! I have to say the Clyde area is perfect for sailing so iI agree t's a bit a shame...
      From Port Patrick to Peel it took me about 8/9 hours (I should check the log). It was mostly motorsailing as that day was barely windy.
      On our trip we were not very impressed with Girvan. The entrance is shallow and it might be difficult if there are waves. It's convenient though to split the journey from Lamlash.
      I was also considering passing through Northern Ireland (Campbeltown - Rathlin Island - Glenarm - Bangor - IoM) but I didn't have a lot of time and I could have been stuck in Northern Ireland for the weather.
      Hope this helps!

      Thanks for your feedback. I will have a look at Peel. Also, Northern Ireland sounds an interesting idea to go back that way. Thanks

    Seems you have a chain locker on your Vega. Would be nice to get a video or some photos of how it is made. Did you make it or was it on the boat when you bought her?
    Fair winds...

    Great trip, man! I always wanted to sail in those waters. It looks like they have treated you well though :) Two questions: do you fix boats and sail by profession? And who did the music?

    • @andreafabi4135
      @andreafabi4135  7 лет назад

      I don't fix boats or sail by profession, it's just an hobby for now... but who knows I might go for an extended trip in the future. I did the music, just simple guitar recordings.

    Thanks for video. Was this your first sail and if so, how much and what training did you do?

    • @andreafabi4135
      @andreafabi4135  5 лет назад +1

      No, this wasn't my first sail. I've got RYA day skipper and I've been teaching sailing in France, but this was the first time in the Irish Sea and with just the help of a friend who had never sail before. It was stressful and this is why I did some mistakes during the trip.

    Hi! I love the Vega. How tall are you? I'm 6' 3" and so it could be a bit less headroom for me....

    • @andreafabi4135
      @andreafabi4135  3 года назад

      I'm 5'10'' and the headroom is about 5'10''. I was able to stand up without touching the roof with my head just under the companionway. Also consider the seats are relatively low and the forward cabin and toilet have much less headroom.
      Depends also what you are intending to do. If it's just for sailing weekends I think it could be OK. If it's for longer period, maybe you have to try first and see if you feel OK with it.

  • @AthelstanEngland

    09:00 enjoyed your video - thank you. Would you do this under sail now you've got some more miles under your belt?

    • @andreafabi4135
      @andreafabi4135  3 года назад +1

      Possibly. With tailwinds should be fine, but need to be really careful because wind often change direction sharply in narrow passages and also the waves make the boat change direction all the time, so there is a risk of involuntarly gybe. The consequenses in that case can be quite dangerous. If I was motoring though I would keep the sails ready to be hoisted in case the engine fails for any reason.
