  • A man and a puppet have a conversation.
FRANK AND EMMET is used with permission from Carlos Fernandez Puertolas. Learn more at lnk.bio/franke....
Frank and Emmet are two lifelong friends and show-business partners who were once close but have been drifting apart. Frank has been preoccupied with other events and developments in his life, but at his granddaughter's house, he finally sits down with Emmet to have a much-needed conversation.
The talk is initially friendly, but things take a turn when Frank finally summons the courage to tell his longstanding creative partner the truth about where he comes from: Emmet is a puppet. Frank has his own truth to disclose, one that promises to profoundly alter their relationship.
Directed and written by Carlos Fernandez Puertolas, this grounded yet whimsical short drama explores friendship, truth and the magical symbiosis of creativity. Inspired by the golden era of Jim Henson's Muppets and told with a charming and engaging mixture of puppetry and grounded naturalism, the story begins with Emmet at his most magical and charismatic, enchanting Frank's granddaughter with his energy and charm. Essentially a two-hander whose action is contained in one central conversation, the film quickly transports us at the start into a world of childlike enchantment, where fuzzy characters have come to life and sing beautifully yearning songs that give voice to a longing for a solid place in the world and a strong sense of self.
But that atmosphere is ruptured with the intrusion of "real life," and Frank enters the narrative. But Emmet, however, doesn't turn into a manipulated assemblage of cloth and wires. Instead, he remains a vibrant, living presence, alive and present to Frank like any other sentient being. This aliveness to the "creator" is the central conceit of the film's premise, enabling the gently humorous and sensitive writing to explore a few sensitive subjects, beginning with Frank breaking the news to Emmet that he is, in fact, a puppet.
Actor Paul Eiding as Frank plays beautifully off of Emmet, performed by puppeteer and performer Brian Michael Jones. Frank has a warm, kind openness, undergirded by a sense of wisdom and melancholy, while Emmet has a distinct personality of his own, as an open-hearted, naive and innocent being. But part of that innocence falls away as he learns what he is. But as his doubts and fears unfold, they're beautifully handled by Frank in such a tenderhearted, loving way, helping Emmet accept the situation -- and a hard truth about Frank's own life.
Gentle-hearted and empathetic, FRANK AND EMMET is essentially a goodbye. It's a goodbye to innocence, as well as the breaking of difficult news, making for a moving, tender scene between two beings that care for one another very much. But it's also a beautiful meditation on coming into our own and gracefully accepting who we are and the reality of situations. And a tribute, too, to the supportive loved ones who will always be with us, even after they're gone.

I lost my best friend a year and a month ago. Since then, I completely shut myself away from the rest of the world.
He was my only friend. And since he left, it became increasingly evident that I can't socialize as I used to before.
This short film broke me, yet it gives me hope for newfound friendships.

Very sad that loss is a part of life. I’ve found comfort in the memories with who I’ve lost. Who they helped you become is what you can take with you as you grow into new friendships - because we all need friends, especially after having lost a special friend. Best wishes to you in creating new friendships. ❤

Some people grow up and they lose all parts of who they were as a child. They lose that little spirit of wonder and child like love. When I was getting ready to enter my preteens I worried about that a lot. I was concerned that I wouldn't be a grown up that would make me proud as a child. Those were some big thoughts for an 8/9 year old but, I thought them. I made a promise to myself that there would be some things I would never out grow like my love for Disney, my love for sweet and simple things and the way I like to make people happy. Congratulations to all of you "adults" who can appreciate this. You've held on to your inner child but you've grown up to understand the adult world and I think that's beautiful.

I used to make stuffed animals and puppets and mostly gave them away or made them for charitable special events and silent auctions. My cats were so real no one thought they were not... until they went to pick them up. Thanks also for reminding me how much joy they gave people... and maybe even more than I'll ever know. I feel so much better after watching that. (And might now go through the 2 baskets of my son's, being he isn't giving me grand-kids to pass on to... yet)

I remember losing a lot of friends due to my autism. In my country, autism aren't welcomed back then, everyone associated it with dangerous mental illness due to educational neglect, everyone who close to me get bullied a lot they cut connections with me, and it always like that until the end of my middle school.
I remember a parent coming to my house and blaming the bullying that happened to their child because of me. I also remember some of my former friend turn their back against me and became one of the bully. It's was a horrible childhood beside having a abusive dad.
But despite that i remember some of them apologizing before stopping became my friend, i used to pain of bullying but they are not so i respect them if they want to quit being my friend, what i can say, we are just a kid, as if we could win against society doctrine.
This story just remind me of those time when i needed to said good bye to all my friend for their sake. Just like Frank and Emmet, we all dont have a choice because we need it for the better of both me and all my friends.

Aha! If they are in Alaska, then I stand corrected. Nevertheless, I cannot help but think that it would have been better if the setting had actually been at night. The light of a dim lamp in the bedroom with the moon and its light visible through the windows.
Furthermore, the nighttime setting would reinforce the idea of _an end of a day, and the end of a life._ Then, the scene could cut to early morning, golden hour sunlight streaming into the bedroom, with the little girl and the puppet. _The beginning of a new day coinciding with the beginning of a new life._

I've seen this situation in other things as well.
Life is messy in a way that isn't satisfying for a story. Maybe that's why stories exist. But then we judge life in comparison to stories.
So some stories feel realistic, but in a bad way. And then other stories don't feel realistic, but in a good way.
Scott Pilgrim (both the movie and the comic) is somehow both of those things.
The unreal stuff feels good because it is orderly. The realistic stuff feels bad because it's not orderly.
