This is fantastic. I believe being a great guitarist is also about being innovative with sound. Lots of the famous great guitarists, played with ideas and equipment and found things that are now mainstream. Electric guitars are nothing mystic, they are simple instruments and low fidelity, however the sound you can get from them is infinite, it doesn't have to be expensive either. Brilliant videos! Love watching.
+Eddie Thanks! Great feedback!
I've been doing this for years... I'll take what someone may refer as a POS amp or "practice amp" or beginner amp remove the amp chassis from the small cab/speaker. Out of scrap I usually have around the shop I will make a new cab that will fit a lager speaker, 12" most of the time or 2x10 even made a 4x8 one time. I usually finish the cab in paint or stain and give it a rat rod/roadworn appearance. My favorite amp to do this with is a Crate GX15R, it has real deal spring reverb and made in the USA. I usually intend on keeping one around to jam but someone always ends up buying them from me for more than I have in them because they always surprise everyone on how good they sound. My current SS low watt creation was the product of a broken Kustom KGA10 that needed a new input jack installed. The 6" speaker was blown so it was a prime candidate. I put a joyo American Sound pedal in front of it then hit the front of that with a joyo sweet baby OD and run the amp anywhere from 1/2 to cranked and it's more than plenty to jam with a drummer. It sounds sic and feels good under the fingers too. It's not a tube amp bit it never fails to surprise anyone who plays my creations. Good video Johan, sounded awesome!
X Crow i
hey i own a GX15R and was looking to upgrade my amp setup any recomendations on what to pair this up with?
X Crow I go further I bypass the preamp of a fender 15R amp, add an FX loop, add speaker out, change the speaker. Put the guts of a joyo american sound inside as the new preamp I put the volume knobs of the joyo with extension cables in the faceplate. And add a dwell control to the reverb. Change the speaker for a jensen vintage. Everyone is amazed as good it sound. Some people think that I put a tube amp inside.
Many amps are handicapped by a low quality speaker. the speaker is the heart of any amp!
Often the circuit itself is fine! It's just fed into a crappy speaker!
X Crow Yeah,I just turned the Marshall Code 50 into a head and bought a $100 Line 6 4x12 and hooked it up!It rattles the floor and walls on 4! It's a super upgrade ! The vintage Marshall 4x12 was over 500 bucks and the new ones are about 500 and I would have preferred those but it still sounds fanfriggen tastic!Even sounds better than the 100!
Wow is all I can say ! Johan, you have again blown my mind. Love these videos.
+Tricko Thanks, glad you like them :-)
You're so right !!!....Johan is our NationalTreasure !!....haha!
You get addicted with this stuff !!
a good speaker saves the day again
+Carlos Reyes Yeah, speakers is the way to go indeed :-)
A good speaker and Johan!~
this amp sounds like a broken speaker
I imagine going to the studio recording a track through this setup. Once famous, every publication asks you how you get that godly tone... And when you finally spill the beans, everybody are like...He,s probably lying.... hahaha
+R. P. Hahaha :-)
Possibly the most impressive video you have put out Johan. Amazing!
+Pablo Escobar Thanks man! :-)
now everyone will be running for vintage greenbacks to hook up to their walmart amps......
+Leesherwood hahaha :-) they should
Leesherwood FIRST ACT BUDDY! :D
Leesherwood and the price rises
One of the things I am so impressed with in your video's, is that you are always playing something different.
+Lloyd Garrelts Thanks Lloyd! I'm really you think so! Cheers Johan
Mate YOU are the tone machine You make virtually any amp sound great.Absolutely love your channel.I'm involved in R&D and we have an arsenal of gear including dozens of guitars and 100's of pickups etc..You've saved us countless hours of testing amps and we thank you for it.Keep up the good work.
+George Krabs Thanks man, glad the videos are put to some good use!
I can still hear a lot of the cheap transistor fritz, but it could easily be passed off as some really organic fuzz box. Very, very cool.
+Joshua R. Deal Thanks man! :-)
Johan you are the greatest!! Thanks for this fun video it's always awesome to see you shred!!
+Carlos Guillen Thanks man :-) Glad to hear it!
Cheers from the States! I really enjoy your videos. They are all very interesting and inspirational. Thank you very much, Johan, and please keep up the good work and great playing.
+Shawn Glass Thanks Shawn! Cheers from Gothenburg, Sweden!
man it looks like you are very satisfied playing guitar through this cheap little amp, and I know I really like the songs and sounds that are coming from this video. it's great that you did this video and thanks by the way you are inspiring me more and more every day.
Makes you think how much work the huge speakers and cracking your volume up does
+IGarrettI Yeah, the speaker are the actual instrument :-) this was actually unexpectedly loud. The Greenback was actually pushed somewhat. Cheers
Old Green backs are gems:)
Great video mate. Please keep them coming.
+covfox Thanks, it will be my pleasure!
After watching this I was inspired to drag out my little Peavey Back Stage. I think I may have solved my lower volume band practise problem without having to spend a penny. So glad you take the time to do all these videos this has really helped me out and I'm many others too. Thanks Johan for taking the time to do these tests.
+Stuart Moxham Thanks Stuart, that's really great to hear!
No way.... you cant stop suprising me! This is the only channel on RUclips that I love all the videos. Good work Johan
+BarbasBandas 666 You make my day :-) Cheers!
and you answer all comments. I respect that. Cheers
I wish, you played the built-in speaker too, for the sake of comparison.
the reality here is the original speaker is the throw away item it shows these budget amps can be killers linked to the right speaker that is all
me too
Miss Tress You don't wanna hear that utter crap! Probably sounded like a battery powered Marshall 1 watt mini stack.
Amazing! Always a pleasure to listen you play!
+André Carvalho Thanks André, glad you like it :-) Cheers
Best guitar channel ever!! Keep up with the good job!
You've got some talent brother. Solid playing, and point proven about that little amp; sounds great!
+Adam SH89 Thanks Adam, I'm really glad to hear that!
Mind blowing video, thanks Johan you're the man!
Great video (again), really informative, and the playing awsome as always!
Oh. My. God. Blown away!
You just made me rethink everything
+Neil Scott :-) Cheers man!
Shoot, no joke, my main amp is a Walmart First Act practice amp I took out of the case and made a new head cabinet and a 4x12 and that amp turns heads everywhere I go. Wouldn't do a show without it. It blows my Carvin MTS out of the water.
Great playing Johan ! Incredible video ! : )
+Mitchell Ferre Thanks Mitchell! Great to hear from you my friend! Cheers
I predict this video will be viewed, discussed and imitated for ages to come. You just blew our minds o_O
+jo sg Thanks :-)
Wicked playing! I really enjoyed the video.
+Siddharth Karunakaran Thanks, so good to hear that!
Great playing Johan!
haha that's great! I'm really enjoying those low budget gear videos, it's impressive that you can have such a huge sound with relatively affordable upgrades. swap your PUs, speaker, maybe cab and you are ready to go! great playing again johan :)
+Capt'n Crunch Thanks :-)
What a great idea, making it all to go in the case! Cheers from Oregon
awesome!! can't believe the sound you got from that
+ferris5150 Thanks, I was really surprised too :-)
Wow big leap in technique! Sounds really nice!
+Jj Jones Thanks Jj! Cheers
yes, I noticed too. Someone has been working
+Alexander “'Xander'” Sack :-)
Nice job man!! Inspired on your videos, I modded my mini amp ms2 so I can plug it on my 2x12 with v30! Great results! Thanks a lot.
+Francis Pimentel Cool! Glad to hear it!
That little amp sounds pretty dope hooked up like this! Great Playing!
+Jstall7543 Thanks! Glad you like the playing.
JOHN, blues and rock... really liked your Supro vids... especially black magik.... keep up the great work.
+J Sweet Thanks J, glad you like it!
I was not expecting such a difference. Blew my mind!
+nickzambrano Thanks Nick :-)
So it appears that the two most important parts of the signal chain are the first (the well practiced player) and the last (the loudspeaker (including the enclosure))! Thanks for another eye opening video!
+BB2009LZ Thanks! Yeah that's how I see it too.
Sounds great man !
Holy cow, Johan. Is there an amp you CAN't make sound killer?
Don't answer that! :-D
Cheers man!
+R Lee Cheers my friend! :-)
you hit it Johan. I play a Roland cube 80 through a 4-12 , and it sounds like a dream
+stoofbuis Thanks! I have to try that too, Cheers!
great video! sounds phreaking great!
+Andy Thomas (mrblitz) Thanks Andy!
You rock!
That tone is just sick!
+John Pabst Thanks John! :-)
It's amazing! Good one Johan!
+Alex Marques Thanks Alex!
Great as usual, Johan! I've always believed that each and every player's hands DO make a huge difference, so...would you like to do a video about hands as instruments in order to check this theory? Same guitar, same amp, same settings, but two different players. Thanks for your good job, keep it up.
+Robyn Crest Thanks! Yeah that's a good idea, cheers
Glenn Fricker did that... but - as usual - the sound was so saturated and the material so generic, it actually did sound the same. There is no black and white.
Holy balls, are you kidding me? That is freaking insane. Gibson will be jacking the price up on this amp now..lol. You never cease to amaze me Johan. Would love to jam with you some day.
from what i know the amp seems to only sell in the amp pack i bought the pack as a gift for a first time player and kept the amp and gave the guitar and the rest away to him
Just found a cheap Electar 10 on ebay. Wired it up w/ output jack and plugged into my G12H 55Hz Heritage in a 1x12 Cabinet I built myself. Cheap. Great sound!
I have an 80s solid state Fender Sidekick Reverb 25watt amp that I've owned since the early 90s, longer than any other amp in my collection. I've owned a lot of cooler amps, a '65 Blackface Princeton, '66 Airline (Champ circuit), 2000 Vox AC30/6 TB, '68 Traynor YBA-1, Music Man 210 65, and quite a few others, but that little Sidekick has been a great at-home and stage backup amp for me. I discovered when I first got to crank it way beyond bedroom volume how good it really sounds. I firmly came to believe that any amp will sound good if you push it to it's sweet spot, and I learned from a David Gilmour interview that that sweet spot is just a hair before where the amp wants to start feeding back. :)
what the ? sounds just as good as a plexi, Great experiment Johan !
+Luke Porter Thanks Luke, yeah I couldn't believe it at first :-)
I can hear it is not a classic tube sound, but soundd like a fairly good SS.
also you play superbly.
once I tried a 5w 4ohms through a big cabinet with 2 16ohms speakers. it really made a bang, my ears ended up ringing for some time after.
+Nocturnal Snake Thanks, I'm really to hear that!
This is true speaker and cab make all the difference, I tried this with a Fender Mini, i hooked it up to a Fender 212 and it sounds awesome. I'm gonna try it soon with a Dan Electro tiny amp next lol.
Very true! I had one of those cigarette box amps plugged into a Marshall 4x10 - unbelievable! It was easily good enough to gig with.
I have said that the speaker is a huge factor in quality, and now I have a great example. Thanks, well done too
+Alexander “'Xander'” Sack Thanks, glad to hear that!
it is amazing what a Green back can do . it is really creamy but alout of that tone is coming from your hands very nice John . I've Ben running a peavey 6505 and a dual supper lead Marshall split stereo with a fender 1995 that I customized my self what a great all-around sound
+Justin York Thanks! That sounds like a cool rig.
lol That... is... awesome... Speakers are one of the most overlooked part of the chain, but they are a huge part of the amp tone. Well done sir!
+David Gossett Thanks man, yeah to speakers are the by far most important part of the sound chain! Cheers
I did this with an Epiphone S10 about 3 years ago. I run it through a greenback it will blow your socks off. I've tried doing the same with the Fender Frontmans and Marshall G10's. It's not the same. That Epiphone circuit has an incredible overdrive to it.
Johan, don't forget you can turn the practice amp speaker into a microphone by wiring an XLR cable onto it. I did this with an old practice amp. It's now a killer kick drum mic!
Thanks for the tip man! I will try that :-)
I bought my son one of those combos as his first very own amp... and now I want to try this for fun with one of my 4x12s. I must say one major gripe with the super cheap amp is that it picks up local radio stations depending how your guitar cable is laying on the floor. ;) NICE feature.
+mrjdlyon so one has to play in the same key as the song on the radio ;-)
mrjdlyon get new cables and put shielding in the guitar cavity. problem solved.
Dayum...that actually sounds really good!
+Mick Côté thanks :-)
You look so funny holding that amp after the walls of fabulous amps. I love it.
oh and it sounds decently good.
+Rj Bron haha, but - whatever works! ;-)
That sounds surprisingly good. Especially as the amp is all transistor.
+Dinosaur David B Yeah it's basically like connecting a pedal directly to a speaker :-)
Very impressive!!!... I'll do the same with my crate v5 xD, thanks for your videos!
+Víctor Pinto Thanks Victor! Glad to hear it!
broken sound like vintage 70 records, impressing!! this has blown my mind dude!!
+Hectrucci2 Thanks man! :-)
Awesome sound!!!
johan, great vid. I always wanted to put a band together using nothing but cheap gear all around. thought it would be awesome to make it big time with cheap rig. that would really put to rest a lot of debates out there.
The tone is in your hands! But we all still want gibson and marshall, haha!
Nice as always!
+silverfr3ak Thanks :-)
Wow, im completely amazed...
+jean-baptiste bienvenu Thanks man :-)
Ahh. I see you started messing around with the harmonic minor scale at around 2:12 haha. Sounds good actually. Great video and keep up the good work sir :)
Wow!!! Really impressive 👌
+Eric Comtois Thanks Eric! :-)
That looked like you were having a really good time there with this setup. Killer Black Beauty too ! People throw those kinds of amps away all the time.
+Rich Firyn I can't believe how it sounded because it's basically just a small PCB board, like plugging a pedal straight into the speaker:-)
The Holy Grail Of Tone !! LOL
I finally subbed. I've been watching some of your videos over the last month or so. I love the way you split the screen with you playing and beautiful scenery. I was wondering where you make these videos how can you play these loud amps without bothering people?
+Joseph Smith Thanks, Welcome to the channel man! Most things are recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden. I have a dedicated rehearsal space where I record, most of the stuff on the channel is way to loud for an apartment. Cheers
Thanks a lot for this great video and all the other great stuff you've been putting out!
Do you think any combo would benefit by connecting to a good cabinet? Would just a new good speaker in case you have a 12" solve the issue? I have a Marshall MG50FX.
+Edison Queiroz Villela Thanks! Yeah if you put a Greenback in it, it will sound very different. To me the speaker and cabinet is the most important part of the sound chain. Cheers
LIke my Fender champ 600 through a home built 2x12 with a Greenback m20 and a weber vintage 25........amazing.....thanks Johan..
+rcolang1 Thanks :-)
Same epierience with my Cube 10GX and 2x12 Eminence The Tonker ;-) Nice Video ;-)
+Maciej Toliński thanks!
johan i really like your playing old school
when I was a kid I took a gibson thor bass amp that had 2 speakers ... took one out at turned the other so it fired into the cab... for some reason it sounded awesome!!!!
I've seen someone do this with a fender frontman 15 i believe and it is a world of difference run through a full cab! This sounds really good with that 1x12
+1thess523 Thanks!
As a Marshall man what's your take on the 2000 TSL 60. A guy is selling one dor $360 on Craigslist, does it get that JCM 900 sound? That's what I'm looking for
Heh, I can see you're enjoying that one, Johan. Nice work.
+Chris ACT I did, mixed with disbelief :-)
You can prove to everyone that what really matters, in TONE, is the guitarrist itself. He is the heart and soul of TONE.
95% comes from the Guitarrist. The other 5% are GEAR (Also very important!)
Well done.
An honor to watch your videos.
i did the same thing to a little squier sp10. amazing results
i currently have a fender mustang 2 with a 12" and i'm planning to buy a micro terror and run it throught the mustangs 12. this video just confirmed for me what i need to do
+Nikola Begonja Thanks :-)
+johansegeborn Man that Les Paul sounds amazing, what pick ups do you have in there and what's the neck profile like? Do you use .10 gauge strings?
+Jeremiah Mountain Thanks! It's got Screambuckers from 59 Parts. The neck is very close to a 59, so in between 57 bat and 60 slim taper. I use Daddario 10-48. Cheers
Surprised this video hasn't been removed! Lol Great video/s, just subbed.
Cool cab demo. Also the 15w electar combo bedroom vol. w/ Maxon od820 and thumb instead of pick gives good marshall plexi up to fuzz tones.
+Mistic Formula Thanks!
This sounds super great, in those beginners packs its not really the amp section it self that is the weakest point.. its the speaker that is totally crap in those tiny combos. in the early 90´s i converted two Marshall combos to heads, and wow what a difference, at this point we can clearly start to get an idea how the amp really sound like with a decent cab hooked up to it.. :D
+HearGear Yeah I couldn't believe it, and it was quite loud too :-)
I think 10 transistor watts are way to little to get trough a 4x12 but if you had a 30 watt transistor you could get a much more massive sound from a 4x12. How ever, 1x12 sounds great for this amp.
+HearGear Yeah, it's just about enough to drive the 1x12
HearGear q
Don´t know if you already tried, but connecting one of those tiny marshall´s MS-2 to an external speaker might surprise you also... congrats for your videos, fan here! :)
Thanks Luis! That’s a great idea for clip! Will be coming up soon :-)
What a great channel with interesting findings! Could you maybe do a critical review of a Marshall Code or MG amp?
+zhauranak Thanks :-) The CODE is coming up soon :-)
hey johan,
could you do a comparison between the marshall dsl40c and the mini jubilee combo?
Great video btw
+Tom Kuhn Thanks Tom, yeah that would be an interesting comparison, so first chance I get. Cheers
Great video, but how was the sound before? And what about the clean sound? Please, do a second video. I'm very interested on the results.
+Igot Cas Mell Thanks, this is how the internal speaker sounded
ruclips.net/video/mdlpGwEcyCY/видео.html
I have a First Act amp that had a 6.5 inch speaker, no bigger than 10 inches square, and that fucking amp ROCKS through a 4x12. It's incredible how classic and Marshally it sounds. I use it over a Carvin MTS 3200.
I did that with my cube 20 watt through a 1x12. sounds killer. people are always perplexed at how it sounds.
+Dan Kiefert yeah, hidden treasures :-)
How do you do this? I mean there is not a problem with the ohm? Is it possible to get clean tones with a cheap transistor amp and a boutique cabin?
Whoaah man, i always affirmed that speakers are THE sound of a rig and this video confirms that.
Now G12M25 are 25W speakers so with a 10W amp (more or less) they are near to breakup. And I figure that most iconic amplification/cab rigs were made of speakers of such power wired to receive 100W (as in the plexi plus 1960 a/B cabs)It would be nice to hear a similar video but with a higher powered speaker and same amp
regards
Ignacio
+Ignacio Majcherczyk Thanks, that's a good idea!
kicking ass brother.. good idea for a video.. so do you wear the hearing protection so you can play louder and doesnt that make for duller sound when playing. if I wore muffs and cranked up the vol my neighbors would really hate me
+Damon Rothermel The Muffs actually has headphones in them, I wear them so I can set mic positions being in the same room. Cheers
+Damon Rothermel I'd never dare to pull this stunt in my apartment though ;-) Cheers my friend!
have you tried the older park amps like this? marshall park G10 or G10R
Can u pls tell me what settings u put the treble and equalizer on like what number cause i have the same amp (its so good) and what switch did u but the guitar on
Yep, proof that it's the speakers which really count. I play my Orange amp through twin Celestion cabs, sounds epic.
+Ian McDaid yeah, speakers is where it's at
How many ohms must have speaker ? I wanna but this Amp and do first work to input amp to cabinet without regreting money .
Thanks
Most Marshalls DON'T sound THAT good. I've heard plexis and super leads that make better coffee tables than guitar amplifiers, and then I've heard some vintage marshals that are pure magic. Great video! Guess I'll have to scrap my marketing industry induced plans to purchase that grossly overpriced mediocre sounding boutique amp that I was certain was going to make my life complete. I'll be keeping an eye out for a 10 watt Epiphone Electar!Cheers Johan
Wow! Have you gotten the call from the Nobel prize committee yet..?
+NPGANDERSSON haha, any day now ;-)
Amazing! I see you put the chassis of the Electar in the case. Are you going to have a cabinet built?
+bgmnzz Thanks! I think it's enough to put it on some wooden plate. Cheers
