Can a 50 Bucks Marshall Lead 12 sound like a Plexi?

- '86 Marshall Lead 12 into a '70 Marshall model 1972 2x12 with G12M25 55Hz (miked) and 75Hz. Guitar Gibson Les Paul Standard 1959 Reissue R9. Microphoes: Peluso 2247 LE on the 4010 and a BeyerDynamic M160 on the 1933. Preamp Universal Audio 2-610 into and Ipad with Cubasis.
They say Marshall stopped working on their MOSFET Lead models because they had taken solid state amplification to its limits. The way I see it, this is pre-DSP chipped circuitry, and so to my ears it has that pure 100% analog sound, like they took a normal tube amp circuit and added in transistors instead of tubes. When you open up a MG chassis today, the integrated circuit board is there of course (say what you will about ICBs vs turret boards), but a Texas Instruments DSP chip is too. It's for the effects, but also for the frequency dependent dampening feature. But honestly, this Lead 12 sounds way better than the MG.
+Gordon Tubbs Yes, The TI TLO72 overdrives beautifully similar to the RC4558. I just got a 3203 Artist, and wow...it rocks..Marshall Solid state preamps were well designed on Marshalls back then.
+Gordon Tubbs Totally agree. I hate all that digital shit on marshalls and vox's. It just hurts your brain after a while.
the 9004 ss preamp sounds better than the 9001 tube preamp
true
Gordon Tubbs very well said. peavey had a line of solid state with discrete transistors that were in what looked like tube sockets....and again a very great uniqueness of tone. ahhhhh...the good old days
Sounds great, with you playing it...
+megahurtz30 Thanks! :-)
The Lead 12 micro stack was my first amp. I bought it new in 1986. I still own it. And it still works.
Great piece of gear :-)
@@JohanSegeborn Do you think the Mojotone BV-25M speaker would sound this good with the Lead 12?
It would be awesome if I could find one for 50 bucks. The ones that pop up in the used market here are around 200-250 bucks...
haha yup :(
plexis cost 2900 bucks so it will be a bargain to sound like one for 200 bucks
In my experience they usually go for between 600 and 800 DKK, which translates to roughly 80-120 USD.. And then they are being advertised a little higher than that to leave room for haggling..
The very early ones can go for a little more, though, if they're in perfect condition..
Where do you find them in Denmark?
Sniperfire24 usually dba.dk or on used instrument groups on Facebook. And I've bought a couple on ebay and gotten them sent to DK.
One of the things I really love about this that a lot of manufacturers seem to be missing these days is the INTENSE CAPITAL LETTER WARNING ABOUT IMPEDANCE along with an explanation of what's alright to use. I've been playing for 20 years now, and I still have friends who don't retain this information.
Besides the Marshall looks and sounding awesome, once again it is proved that TONE comes from the soul and heart, through the fingers, of the guitar player!
You nailed it!
Amazing!
+Francisco André Gonçalves Thanks my friend!
True enough, fancy name brand equipment will never make anyone a better player...only the discipline of practice will do that...but it sure does enhance the playing of someone who has the chops...
These demos changed the way I think about making sound. I've just bought a lead 20 and love it. I'll be buying up every similar model I can until I have a nice plump collection I believe.
+Christopher Alchin I'm glad to hear it man! These 80s SS amps have such great and different characters. Great for a big mix!
This is actually the amp that Billy Gibbons used for My Heads In Mississippi.
yeah, actually I can recall reading in an old guitar magazine way back that he recorded the whole album with a lead 12.
amazing!!
I just listened to the whole recycler album and I definitely hear the lead 12 throughout it.
I believe that BFG actually used a Lead 12 Combo MKI (1983 production/No Headphone or Out Jacks on front panel) as they had a fuzz circuit that was only found on the first production run.
This amp is Billy Gibbons approved. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
+1 Reverend-approved
I did not expect it to sound THIS good! But then, its a lot about the speakers and the cab. Still great though
Teodor Molander Thanks Teodor, the plexi sound is very much the sound of old Greenbacks :-) Cheers
sounds good for 50bucks. id def play live with this amp
+Neil Kush Thanks Neil!
+Neil Kush To be honest, I think it would sound good even for a >500 bucks amp. I listened to the shootout with 15 ORIGINAl plexi amps and then this one and it’s scary how good this amp sounds. I guess this goes to show how important cabinet, micing, playing style and settings on the amp are.
I do not gig. But I’m curious to know if this Amp is giggable? Does it depend on the speakers, how loud the amp can go? Please excuse my ignorance. Cheers
@@iamandes4455 depending on set up but a 12 watt amp probably won't overcome the drum set...lol
50 watts wide open is about right I run 2 40 watt secret marshall heads and 2 2x12 cabs in stereo.
Had to revisit this one, truly an amazing vid proving the Lead 12's potential in Johan's skilled hands. The riffs are amazing, too, had to hear them over and over, they make me work harder :-) Thanks Johan
Yes he can.... I had those Marshall as a Combo. I muted the power stage, put the output to a valve amp, connected it to a 4x12 box, and man this thing could rock. Amazing how that worked.
Michael Achenbach How can I make that ??
Do I need to plug the Lead 12 Speaker into its cab too?
Or jus Turn on the Lead 12 and plug the output into the send of the tube amp?
So this was only a distortion preamp like a pedal for you
I just got one of these micro stacks and have been blown away by how good it sounds. A little gutless on the little, stock 10" speakers, but it roars through my Marshall 4x12 cab.
you have to remember he has a very high quality cab to play through. it really steps up the quality of the tone here.
+Bo Huggabee Yeah the cab really helps
I had a Marshall lead 100 MOSFET back in the early 90s. The lead 12 video made me remember it. I wish still had it. It was loud through a 1960a cab ! Made in England. I did not know it had a push/pull feature on the gain knob. It sounded much nicer than today's MG series. Thanks Johan ! : )
GREAT FIND!!!!!!!!!!! Any idea where one is most likely to find one of these Lead 12s. I am sure this just didn't occur by accident. Your combined knowledge and experiences are what unearthed this find.
Another classic amplifier of tomorrow. I may need to keep my eyes open for one.
Lovely playing as always Johan. Thank you!
+Zac F Thanks Zac, so glad to hear it!
Nice playing and tones! I must say that your studio has an awesome room verb! Someday it would be cool if you posted a few convolutions from the studio ... that has to be one of the sweetest ambient reverb vibes I have heard in my 30 some years of recording!
+danceofthedruids Thanks, yeah this room is amazing, it's built in an old factory so everything is very big and massive. Cheers Johan
I was ready to go out and get a Marshall Lead 12 and then remembered I had a red stack still in boxes in the "warehouse" (basement). Prices went up a bit on these. I did not realize what a great tone they put out. Really great demo! Subscribing!
Sounds really good in this particular recording - great job Johan! 👍
JonasSweden1 Thanks Jonas :-)
That riff you play about 47 seconds in reminds me of wait for the black out by the damned. I love that tune thanks for reminding me :)
Thanks for that post. It is a great song!
Proda Jie haha I heard it too!
I've still got my Lead 12 combo that I bought in 87. It was my first Marshall. I never looked back since!
Love watching your videos, great playing and great sound demos of the gear you choose. Lead 12 sounds amazing for such a little guy and solid state to boot. Marshall Rules.....................I've tried many, but always seem to migrate back to my Marshalls, think I'm gonna just stick with them. Can't go wrong with Marshall tone.
+Dale Ellerbe Thanks Dale, yeah the Marshall tone is on all those albums we like, so no use in trying to find it elsewhere :-)
I have seen a few of these for sale and passed by. Silly me. Next time I will be waiting for the delivery truck ! I am in complete agreement with your smile at about two minutes in. What a great demo ! And fantastic playing ! Thank you so much Johan ! : )
These were pretty cool, meant to be low volume "practice" amps, I learned a lot of guitar licks through one that my teacher owned. Good tones at a low volume.
+lookingjust987654321 It is indeed! Cheers
I got the original Lead 12 when they first came out in 1983. They were a great preamp using the line-out jack.
It's all in the fingers..lovely guitar playing!
+Stephen Boyle Thanks Stephen! You make my day!
Appreciate your work Johan🤘🏼. You just motivated me to put another new mini rig together.⚡️⚡️🎸
Awesome depth from this little amp ......................... incredible !!
Thanks cy! Yeah it must be the best value amp ever. Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn hey Johan listen what would be a comprable Bottom for this incredible amp?
Johan Segeborn Any Marshall.... Bottom what speakers would be well suited for this amp Green Back S? thx Johan have a great Summer
Wow I am surprised at the sounds coaxed out of that amp! Matching it with the right appropriate cab makes a difference... Marshall-to-Marshall! Great demo!
+Andrew Zendejas Thanks Andrew!
Sounds great. I feel like plexi. Congratulations. 🎉
Been watching your videos on these. When looking for them online I saw the Lead 15 as well. Do you have any thoughts on those, or have you tried one? Thanks
My first Marshall amp, in a combo. Many amps came and went, but I never parted with that one! You can hear why.
johan. the quality of the guitar and sound equipment is evident as well as the possible effect of the room you record in. variables I introduce for consideration for the tones you offer. .
Johan I will mention this. in the last month I ve pulled out 20. 15 10 year old gear and marvelled the better tone. it's really been an eye opening experience
+JED TAYLOR Yeah in this clip the room sound is quite prominent
Your being generous johan. Thanks. I was making reference to any room and basic sound application school
Sounds great, how's the tone at bedroom volume? What 1x 12 Marshall cab would you recommend? Thx
+peter g Thanks, it works great at bedroom volume levels too, I'd go for a model 1933 Marshall 1x12 and put a G12M Greenback in it.
awesome tone and awesome licks too!
+Mistic Formula Thanks, that's great to hear!
Sounds amazing for a solid state amplifier!
Its not the gear! Its you my friend! You makes sound anything out of this world! Cheers Jorge
I had this and exchanged it for a Peavey Envoy 110. I don't regret getting the Peavey as I prefer that sound, but I do regret that I gave up the Lead 12. It was a great little amp
Johan, If you had to pick a plexi series which best described the tonal and harmonic characteristics that the lead 12 head in your video here sounded closest to, which would it be?
Hi, that would be a Bluesbreaker model 1962 or the corresponding JTM45 head. Cheers Johan
I have two Lead 12s and they're really surprisingly good sounding amps. I plug them into my 1960A/B stack when my 1973 Super Lead isn't using them.
I also have one of the MG15MSII microstacks and that is also a very fun amp to play as well. Really I think that model is underrated.
Hej Johan, I have a dirt cheap Marshall combo that I got with a guitar I bought. It's a Marshall Valvestate VS30R and I think the tone is absolutely fantastic for the price (they typically go in the neighborhood of about 100 bucks). The response is valve'ish and tone is gritty and dirty without too much overdrive. Do you know if this one share the circuitry of the Marshall 12 head? BTW I really like you videos, they are great. Keep up the good work! /Anders
Thanks Anderz, I have heard that it was an inspiration to the valvestates, but I don't know to what extent.
Sounds excellent ! Why do older Marshall solid state, valvestate, etc. sound better than the current solid state models ?
Hello Johan, your site is one of the most interesting guitar sites on youtube! Thank you. Do you think the Lead 12 sounds like the 60's Marshall amps? If so, which one? Thanks.
Thanks Edward! Glad to hear it. I think the lead 12 can sound rather close to a Bluesbreaker (model 1962) or a JTM45. Cheers Johan
Sounds FANTASTIC -and weighs a lot less than my 2203. THANKS JOHAN!!
Hey Johan: how would you run the settings on a 1959 Marshall Super Lead for a classic tone? Been playing with a UA plug-in model of one and the presets mostly sound very bass heavy and boxy. I have a reasonable set of monitors. Curious about typical set ups, cheers
PS, I don't know why UA call it a 1959 when they weren't built till the mid 60s, but that's their name for the amp model...
I legitimately cannot wait until I can play like you.
+Niklaus Venzendt Thanks my friend :-)
Great demo !!!...................Do you prefer the Bass 12 over the Lead ?
Tx
+Lou Sekoya Thanks! As a combo I prefer the Bass 12, I haven't played it through a 4x12 yet though. That will be a good topic for a clip!
It is one little ampli with one great sound, congratulations, great test, great video ,regards from Argentina.
Very nice demo as always. Marshall's lead 12 are very underrated I think, I have a silver jubilee mini stack and a Reverb 12 combo and they are perfect for home use. Do you run it with just one speaker output connected? Read somewhere that could damage the amp and haven't dared to try it.
+Daniel Johansson It is 1x8 Ohm or 2x16 Ohm. As long as you stick to that you will be fine
Love your stuff Johan! A bit off topic here... What do you think about Marshall's so called entry level (Discontinued) MA series? Been seeing a lot of bashers out there... was it really that bad a series?
great sound!! What about the volume? You can play with a drummer with this?? And does the combo version sound the same if you use external cab??thanks, rock n roll!!
I will keep my eye's open at the pawn shops for this amp from now on! Just picked up a JCM 2000 TSL 60w for $360 on Craigslist a few weeks back!
+1thess523 Cool, that's a bargain
Yeah i looked to see what they were going for and locally they were all going for around $700 and the cheapest online was about $600. Hey i had a Gibson pick up question, my son's church worship leader (my son is the main guitarist in the youth worship band) is selling stock pick ups from i believe a Les Paul 1960 Classic for around $50 if I'm not mistaken. Are you familiar with what they would have come with i believe its a 2006-2008 reissue. My son has an SX LP copy so i know those pick ups are better then what he's got but i wanted to see if they are worth buying. Also I just want to say i appreciate that you respond to your viewers, that means a lot.
This reminds me I have the combo 1x10 version of this amp. I bought it new in 1983/4 for $180. It was in a flood and looks fine, I just never used it after it was in the water... I need to dig it out and have a tech check it out. If it still works I'll have to make a video of it... but don't expect me to sound this good! I've been under water too long myself... RUSTY!
+Garth Kolbeck Thanks, man :-) Post a link here on this channel when you've recorded it!
I actually found a 1986 (chassis inspection tag dated 11/6/86) Lead 12 half stack today, snatched it up without a thought. It was a little more than 50 bucks. More like 250, but it's a Lead 12. Saw one on Reverb today full stack for $750.
I love Johan’s videos.
Johan, you've mentioned these little Marshalls from the mid-19980-s' how can I identify the amp is from the 80s'? What are the serial numbers or identifying marks? I'm going to come to your house for about six months or so for guitar lessons (joking). love your demo playing. Do you have any videos with a complete band?
+50gary The Lead 12 was actually only built in the 1980s. If you have any other amp you wonder about, just ask me.
Most of my recently videos are in a band setup. Cheers
One question sir, where can i find the serial number on the Lead12 ? i would love to know the exact year of mine ;D
The serial number on mine is on the front panel, close to the word POWER on the mains switch, very close the the bottom of the head box. Mine is from 1988, a 4 hole version with separate line out and headphone sockets, the earlier ones had 3 where the line out/headphone is combined in the one jack
+Casey Butt
The way he plays man, he can make a plexi sound like a plexi!
Nice playing! Amp sounds great.
+Amy Fields Thanks Amy!
I think it also helps if you have an original 70s guitar and cabinet with old vintage speakers. Then run that threw a top of the line microphone into a tube powered microphone amp. Seriously though, have you heard any of his shootouts where you wernt shocked at the tones he got?
+Rondo McBower yes, the cab and speakers plays a huge role in this tone
I just found one last week at a yard sale $30.......with a little deoxit sounds really good........ it's the brown vintage lookin mesh one. how rare are those.....?? sounds really good, better than my box with all kinds of bullshit effects.......oldskool Marshall tone all the way.... love it.....
+episode 666 no one Cool, I havent seen one, but in 85-86 the cloth on the Marshall were prone to bleaching into a cool brown tone. Cheers
If it looks like this, yes, it has bleached out. I just found this one for $35 USD:
i569.photobucket.com/albums/ss132/Adam_White/20170519_124447_zps3u9pplki.jpg
Expensive Beer in Swede (may be a good name for a alt-rock band...outside scandinavia!). Nice sound . Little technical question: it is often said that the preamp of those are akin to the JCM-800's. To what extent, as they are all transistors vs Tubes in the bigger ones ?
It may be voiced after it, or maybe even share some elements with the split channel JCM800 circuits, but the 2203/4 has basically the same preamp layout as in the 1960s
:-), Keith Richards solo band was called X-pensive Vinos.
Can these be "pushed" into a higher gain with a boost pedal? I know there are certain solid state amps that respond to being boosted the same way tube amps do, just wondering if this is one of them.
I have one of these in the combo form. A lot of effort is being made to make "Marshall in a box" pedals. All they really need to do is work out how to squeeze the Lead 12 into a pedal enclosure!
odgeUK Haha indeed! As a matter of fact I think Billy Gibbons did just that. he racked a Lead 12 and used it as preamp
With my eyes closed it doesn't sound that clearly solid state. How is the feel? Does it feel 'valvy' to play?
Ever heard a lovepedal purple plexi? It is a driven solid state ic chip as well. And the drivemaster, guv'nor pedals..... As long as its high gain, filtering does the trick. Sag and dynamics and feel are completely different ball park.
Nice! Have you tried it with an overdrive in front to push it a little more?
+Mick Côté Thanks! No I haven't, I have a very limited experience of pedals I'm afraid. Cheers
Johan, just try a boss sd overdrive in front with the drive turned down and
the level turned up so it doesn't color the sound but just boosts it and makes
it more ballsy.
Great video Johan.
Just wondering how this little head reacts to boost/tube-screamer?
Does it react like a valve amp?
Great tone!
Thanks Jimmy!
Hi Johan ! I have an Hiwatt T20 combo (with one 12 inches Fane speaker). It's my first tubes amp and I absolutely love it despite the clean channel being too clean and the drive channel being too saturated. I found it for less than 300€ which was quite a deal I think. I was wondering how it compares with a Custom. Is the comparison possible ? Thank you ! :)
+FuguZaKat Hi! I'll keep it in mind. Cheers
I use 3 White stacks just like this and it sounds so good.
+timstrepek1 Great amps indeed
Again just shows how important good guitars( pickups) and speakers are.
+sneifert1968 The most important part in the chain indeed
hey Johan i have a question maybe you can help me out here, i bought a lead 12 head silverjubilee edition but it has a dirty hiss crackling sound when i play, some notes more than others and you can hear it even at low gain, at full gain it kinda disguises the hiss but still sounds weird, i changed the capacitors the big ones, but no fix, do you happen to have a clue on what could be the problem here, help would be much appreciated, nice videos BTW you have some good gear! cheers!
+dav barracuda Thanks Dav! Could be a number of things I'm afraid. Have you tried it thorough another cab? You could take it to a tech or start a thread on Marshall forum, often someone has had the same problem earlier and knows how to fix it. Cheers Johan
I have one and they are amazing
You have an U42.... serial number wise, I bought an U33..... recently
It sounds the same, U means the year1986, great sound without modeling, only with transistors. Marvellous!!! It might become a collector amp like the plexies.
Mine is with a slanted and a straight box containing 10" Celestions G10D-25, 16 ohms each.
+Lara Knierim Yeah these are wonderful amps. That ministack has a very bluesbreaker like tone. Cheers Johan
just picked up one for $35 bucks GC used gear . awesome littl;e head! great as always Johan!
HI. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE NICE TRICKS ABOUT PICKUPS AND AMPS YOU ARE SHOWING
WHY DON^T MAKE SOME VIDEO ABOUT ADDING CROSSOVER (CAPACITOR) TO THE SPEAKER, ,OR ADDING PIECES OF IRON TO THE MAGNET ,TO CHANGE FRECUENCIES? I TRIED THESE CHANGES IN A FRONTMAN 15R AND IT WAS A REVELATION.
oh yeah lots of blues. great sound
+Robbie Russell Thanks Robbie!
I don't know where you're from but your accent sounds Austrian. Austria kicks butt. Absolutely gorgeous scenery. Love the playing. Rock 'n roll.
Thanks! Austria is indeed a beatiful country, I especially love the Zillertal. But I'm from the land of Volvo, Sweden! Cheers Johan
Sounds awesome. My friend has one, and I am always impressed with the tone of it, but no way can we gig with it without micing it.
When are you going to demo a Sabbath era Laney Super Group? Hmmmmmmm?
+LARRY Soon! That's high on my list indeed, being a huge Sabbath fan!
Why would you ever not mic your amp in a live show?
mbsnyderc In a bar or club it's pretty rare to see anyone mic their amps. At least here on the West Coast of USA. I don't know about the rest of the world.
There's just no reason to mic an amp. I point my amp directly at my head, and still no one ever complains that I wasn't loud enough. lol
LARRY
You must go to different bar than i go to.
LARRY I hope I don't play on the west coast anytime soon then. It must suck for the people in the back of the venue. probably getting nothing but kick and vocal. maybe bass
Awesome demonstration. If I heard this without knowing what type of amp it was I would have guessed that it was some type of Marshall tube amp as the distortion is so rich on it. I also have one of these little Lead 12 amp heads along with the two matching 10" celestion equipped cabinets (which are quite nice). A lot of people don't know it, but these little amps are secret weapons in the arsenal of studios around the world. Marshall did an amazing job of replicating their classic valve amp sounds with a solid state design.
When I want that classic Marshall sound this is the amp I use. It also works great with distortion pedals for different tones and has a lovely clean sound.
Definitely one of the best deals on the used-amp market.
Thanks for doing this demo. Now I feel like recording with mine again as it's been a long time.
BTW is that a ribbon mic you're using on the speaker cabinet?
+wigon Thanks! Yeah it can indeed compete with most amps, at least as a recording amp! The mic is Peluso 2247LE Tube Condenser. Cheers Johan
Hey Johan, how does this stack up against the Lead 15 head?
+Caleb knott Hi Caleb, Ive actually never played the 15, but popular opinion seems to be that the Lead 12 is more vintage sounding.
Luv the ending part when guitar is left alone on chair and buzzing... Kinda like ACE FREHLEY
love the sound of it
would you sell yours for the cost of a couple of beers?
I have a bunch of em, have sold some for that amount. ;-)
+Johan Segeborn can i buy one?
+GeorgeElliasVideos are the combos any good?
Question is where do you get a vintage amp like this for 50 bucks? here in Canada they would probably sell it for like 1000 or more
+thejusticeization They've gone up a bit since this video was made but in Sweden you can still get them for 100-200 bucks
1000??? For 1300 you can take JMP 2203 head. Crazy price.
Wow. The wiews from your balcony are amazing! You live in Stockholm am I right?
Had a Reverb 12 which is the same amp only in combo with Reverb. I miss it. :(
What is the riff at :48 Sounds like a song but cannot place it.
Sounds Awesome Johan!!! Let's Go!!!
I think there was some personal satisfaction in play on that one.
Amazing tone. So wish I had one.
zurg9000 Thanks man
How come you never play stratocasters in your videos? Sometimes I see that you have them laying around though.
Can you drive a 4x4 cab with the lead 12 combo? I asked a guy who is selling one and he told me I couldn't :(
+keaulana1 Hi, do you mean 4" speakers or 4x12, You can indeed get good tones out of a 4x12 with the Lead 12 but it is primarily for recording
Try a mexico made fender frontman 15 has a cab out on the front. 2 x 12 cab sounds amazing, i made a head out of one, just cut out the cheap speaker and made a head like the Marshall lead 12. Total cost 17 bucks and some elbow grease. Best 17 bucks ever spent.
Great video. I'm always interested in solid state amps. I have a Marshall from the UK called the AVT 150 that is solid state with a 12" celestion that is killer. They work great. It has a preamp tube, but I've played a lot of solid state amps that are killer if they are made well. People think solid state sucks because a lot of the cheaper SS amps that came with cheap guitars from Wallmart, etc, were bad, and therefore all SS amps are bad. Not true. If it sounds good, it's good.
Thanks man.
Thanks Tim! I agree, that's my only criterion too. Cheers Johan
I think Marshall had some way of making their transistor amps sound just like tube amps. With all the characteristics. I remember watching a gig that sounded great. I thought the guy with a Marshall was using a tube amp but it ended up being a 100 watt tube amp.
I can't believe that solid state amp can sound like this. Great! Another question is why does MG series sound like crap?
+TheCheck01 I'm gonna do a clip on the MG series soon here on the channel. I agree, what I've heard so far from them is not at all as good as the 80s SS Marshalls. Cheers
The lead 12 is made in the uk with love I’d say
God I wish these could still be had for $50. With the 2 speaker cabs, these are over $1000 now!
I know I can probably Google it , but I'm too lazy to change windows lol plus your awesome!
was wondering if they made little matching 1x12 or 1x10 cabs for it?
I don't know if it's just your awesome playing, or that's an incredible lead... probably both! For 50 bucks it sounds pretty damn good!
DarkStar Wizard Thanks man :-) that makes me glad!
Glad to hear it!
