I too love the Nebula class. It became a favorite of mine after seeing this particular version on the screen. Not surprised the Akira class won. It definitely is more advanced than the Nebula.
Once again... before I watch, I think it will be based on the pilot. The Akira was built for war, but the Nebula is very similar to the Galaxy class, only more compact. Nice Showcase!😅 In theory by registry, the Akira line is older, yet their design was such to provide a combat vessel to match the Borg and other growing threats.
The Akira's captain must have been a descendant of Khan or at least a Klingon ... LOL ... was not goofing around ...what a pounding and then just ramming you out of spite. Wonderful match.
Not surprised with the outcome here the akira is a beast and one of my favourite ships it was made around the same time as the defiant and sovereign class so like them its built to kick ass what a good fight
Akira is like that heavyweight that no one looks at because she comes in a smaller package than usual. One thing that does bother me is a lot of the models dont have the amount of phaser arrays that much of the pre 2008 and post 2008 lore says there is. This may be because of the newer models not modeling it but ive always read that there was the 2 primary ventral and dorsal arrays. 2 more arrays on the port and starboard sifes right above the nacceles. 2 more ventral arrays on the humps on each side of the bridge. And 1 more dorsal array that kinda completes a circle on the dorsal side of the saucer section. Some models also dont have the saucer torpedo tubes. (I think theres 2)
Yeah Star Trek Picard had Akira then in the background of season 3 they had the next version Alita class. Sutherland class Introduced in season 2 which is similar to nebula class but new. And they had the Ross class. New and is similar to a Galaxy class.
Galaxy and Nebula Class were still around in the 2410s. They may not be part of the Rapid Response Fleet, or at Frontier Day, but they are still in service. While they aren't the warships as the classes that came after them in the 2370s and on, they are still superlative ships of exploration.

@@MSR-1701 Yes, it was published in the 90s, mainly ships from the Wrath of Khan era with one update on a new "Constellation" class starship they're working on. Pretty cool.
@@SupremeCleave ah, I know the publication you are referring to! And thank you for bringing it up, adding to my wishlist! 😅 I think the Adamant Class may be in BC/KM/RE by way of Starforce productions, and if in RE most likely via the TMP Ship Pack release. If I remember correctly from the various tech manuals and from other sources...The Nebula Class was referred to as a Heavy Assault Frigate, or a Torpedoe/Gun Frigate...
You must be slightly Betazoid, I was just thinking these two needed to battle it out. Poor Nebula class, such a good looking ship wasted. Maybe we need a special RBG edition of the Nebula???
The nebula was one of the federation first torpedo boats. The Akira is a remimagined and improved version of the torpedo boat/science vessel combo. It's also more manuverable. The nebula and galaxy classes were balanced capital ships. Not dedicated warships like the sovereign or Akira . They were comparable, but not equal.
The episode with the Prometheus was pretty telling in that the Akira class was going to tank the warbirds itself while the Defiants took on the Prometheus
In all honesty I think an Akira would be more than a match for any Federation/Klingon/Romulan/Cardassian ship of the TNG era even the Galaxy Class. The only time you ever see it struggling is in a fleet against a Borg cube or against Cardassian orbital weapons platforms. Probably only outmatched in the Federation fleet by the mighty Sovereign. The fact that the captain of the unnamed Akira from Prometheus thought he could take on 3 D'Deridex class warbirds shows the confidence in her capabilities. I think she can also carry Quantum Torpedoes, roll bar launchers are definitely big enough.
The irony about the Akira Ramming you... In First contact the Akira that is shown is the "Thunderchild" which may be what it is in this video. The Thunderchild is reference to a ship in the original War of the World novel. It is the only thing in the entire book that manages to take out a Martian Walker... and it does so by ramming it.
Given that they are the same mass, but the Nebula is so much bigger in terms of volume it would mean that the Akira would be alot more armored. I think we can see that when we compare all the 2360 ships to the 2370 ships.
Personally I prefer the Akira class! It just feels like more of a warship in its design. It looks like an animal that's crouched down, ready to charge! (weird description I know but, that's the only way I can describe it. Its because of the warp nacelles being underneath). Plus it has a similarity in look, at the front, to the NX class which (unpopular opinion maybe) I like!
These are two ships that can do the SAME job but one is BUILT specifically for that ONE JOB which is chucking PT's down range and the Nebula is a big target for the much more manoeuvrable Akira. Also Akira could take out the PT launcher on the Nebula in one or two lucky hits.
Akira is the better warship. The Nebula is far superior as a starship. The Nebula's size and modular design means it can take on almost any mission type. The Akira has really on two roles: Torpedo Cruiser and medium-range explorer. A refit Nebula will bridge the gap with the Akira, but the Akira would need a huge reworking to become a very useful large explorer. That said, I think the vast majority of the Nebula mods out there are underpowered. I would like to see a real Dominion War Refit Nebula Class *Battlecruiser* equipped with quantum torpedo launchers along with the rest of the PT launchers the large tactical module can carry. Also, I don't understand why the Nebula mods don't feature the Nebula's drive-section launcher that also throw a lot of PTs.
I always thought of the Akiras as glass cannons. They have enormous fire power but their shields and hulls can't compete with larger ships like a Galaxy or Nebula. The balancing between here seems off to me. The Nebula's shields seem too weak and the Akira's shields too strong.
At the end of the day even though we’ve seen Akira class ships on screen, there isn’t really anything in canon to indicate how they compare to a Nebula so each person will have their own head canon. I guess you could argue that since Starfleet sent 1 Akira and 2 Defiants to engage 3 Romulan Warbirds (and possibly the Prometheus), that the Akira must be a pretty heavy duty ship.
@@CC-mp1wk That's very true. I suppose I'm stubbornly holding onto the idea that a bigger ship = a bigger warp core = a more powerful ship overall. But Trek seems like they've been moving away from that for a while. I wish they wouldn't though!
@@Skirne I think that’s true in most cases. You really have three factors; 1-Overall size 2-Combat focus 3-Age/Tech level If we speculate wildly, the Akira is probably newer than the Nebula, and benefits from some of the new weapons tech developed post Wolf 359. It was also probably designed to be a multipurpose ship that leans towards a combat role, whereas the Nebula was also multipurpose but leaned pretty hard towards exploration and science. So the Nebula just has one of those three factors going for it, size. Now it’s possible that its size completely offsets the other two factors, but most likely not. If a Nebula class was built from the ground up to incorporate all of the Akira tech and was also built with the same priorities then it would wipe the floor with it most likely, due to being larger and having a more powerful core as you say.
My impression is that the Akira class offers plenty of bang for your buck. I.e. they have lots of firepower but are relatively easy & quick to build, essential during the Dominion War. However in terms of multipurpose roles the Nebula is more versatile, offers plenty of firepower & shielding but can also serve as long range exploration ship. The Nebula is a peacetime ship but time consuming to build. I think the Akira is only moderately newer from the late 2360’s whilst a Nebula is 2350’s. Overall I think the Akira was over powered here, I still think a Nebula should be more like a Galaxy class & out gun it whilst having greater shield output.
I disagree, the only time you see them outmatched is when fighting a Borg cube and against advanced orbital weapons platforms. Even in Sacrifice of Angels there are several Akira's that have advanced very far into the Dominion lines. Very powerful and tough ship.
