  • 🇻🇳 We're at the Vietnam-Chinese border, on the Vietnamese side, that is! This is the city of Mong Cai. It all started off great, with a nice meal of noodles at a Chinese restaurant chain. After that Max and I went to search for ice cream, which was someone of a failure. Due to that we decided to switch gears and get milk tea. Little did we know we would meet a stupid customer calling us "covid". But it's okay, it sure did feel good to turn around and tell her to her face that I knew exactly what she was saying. She sure was surprised, embarrassed, and at a loss for words. Hopefully it teaches her not to assume things about people next time :)

A note about the video since it's getting a lot of views again - 99% of people in other countries, no matter the country I've been to, are incredibly nice. Don't let this one woman deter you from traveling or get a bad image of other places. Between the languages I speak and the places I've been, I very rarely have crap like this happen. Thanks for watching and keep exploring!

And as it goes, troubles began with fake news, something that never has been that hot in Vietnam since 2019.

Happened to me and my mother. We are Brazilians, live in Brazil. Brazil has a huge Japanese immigration, and after five or six generations, they are completely integrated to our society (just like... well, everyone else, actually, we are a very mixed country and very proud of it).
So, my mom and I were in Liberdade, a place mostly occupied by Japanese, in São Paulo. We were eating in a very crowded restaurant, when those two very old Japanese ladies couldn't find a place to sit and eat. So, we naturally offered the other two chairs in our table. This is a very common cortesy here, we do that all the time, is special to old people and pregnant women.
So, they sat down and immediately started to talk in nihongo (Japanese language) to each other, without any idea I could understand every single word.
They looked at my mother, a big smiling and sweet woman (even if she didn't understand a single word they were saying, it's in our culture to always try to be gentle and smile to everyone, in special foreigners) with tanned indigenous skin and yellowish eyes... and started to loudly whisper to each other, laughing and even pointing, referring to her as "saru". Saru, for those who don't know it, means "monkey". And when they noticed I was looking, my smile disappearing, they laughed even more, loving the fact they were probably confusing me as well.
I let them talk for a while, but even being proud of my patience, this situation reached my limit very soon. So, I stated 'to my mom', in high and clear Brazilian Portuguese for the entire restaurant to hear, how it was funny how we opened our doors to receive everyone from everywhere, but some still refused to learn basic respect... If you enter someone's home, the least you should do is to respect the owner, right? But no, apparently, even 'monkeys' show more respect and kindness than some old and very disrespectful people...
The two imediately stopped talking, looked at me in horror, hurried to get everything and run. I just smiled at them, as my mom, sweet as she is, could just stare, very confused at the entire situation, without a single idea about what they were just talking about her. The staff, all nihongo speakers as well, and just as annoyed by their little act, applauded. I was even gifted a croissant by the owner. Apparently, it wasn't the first time these two ladies were disrespectful to the Brazilians on that same restaurant, but the staff couldn't confront them and most of the targets couldn't understand their language. So, when I did both, everyone there liked it very much.
Always be respectful, people... It doesn't cost anything, and you prevent to be caught acting like an idiot, like these from the video and all the situations on the comments. Thank you, you're welcome.

Basically. that branch had a problem with contaminating fryer oil/not separating the fryer vats used for spicy chicken and not spicy chicken. Because I’m a damn pansy when it comes to spice, I prefer my stuff very plain.

Like, idk how to explain that, but surely the word pickle in English and the Vietnamese translation of that are always mentally linked together in order to understand Vietnamese in the first place? Or is it more like.. the foreign language you learn gets associated with mental images instead of words, so you see what it is but don't immediately know the word in english? 🤔

@@mimthyss Very interesting question/comment. The answer is, no, they are not linked at all, at least in my brain, which is why it's so difficult to translate back and forth sometimes, even for something as simple as the world "pickle" It's because all my experiences with a "pickle" in English and a pickle in a language such as Vietnamese are different. "Pickle" in English might make me imagine sour or sweet little round cucumber strips that you put on a sandwich. While the world "pickle" in Vietnamese would make me imagine radish potentially, or pickled mustard greens, which I would eat as a side dish. I have different emotions, thoughts, and experiences when I say the two words. For me they are completely different, even though translation-wise, they would be equatable. Even for a word as simple as dog, "dog" in English makes me think of big dogs liek golden retrievers, while in Vietnam I think of smaller dogs as they don't really raise big dogs much there. Hope that makes sense.

The funniest language mix up I have observed was an Asian guy sat on a train from Hannover to Stuttgart. A German guy sat next him and proceeded to talk english (loudly) for the whole trip to the Asian guy. It was so loud that other passengers were opening luggage to get headphones and several actually moved to another carriage. Not once did he ask if the Asian guy spoke German until near the end of the journey. The Asian guy spoke perfect German and when the rest of the carriage heard this exchange we all fell about laughing. It was quiet after that.

I'm in NYC (Bklyn), and years ago I was in a store in Boro Park (where I'm now living over 40 yrs later) where it has a huge Hassidic Jewish community. I'm Irish and German but was raised Jewish and knew Yiddish (Jewish slang of German).
I went into a millinery store looking to try on hats, and a woman with her teen daughter was trying on hats and had alot of bags with them from shopping, and I told the girl that I thought the hat looked cute on her. So what does her mother do?? She told her daughter in Yiddish that she should watch their bags- as if I was going to steal them. I was beside myself, and I turned around and said- "Next time- make sure the person your talking about doesn't understand what saying!" She was in shock because I understood what she said, I then turned to the sales girl and thanked her for her time- and walked out! I was more upset that that dork of a woman upset my shopping cause I really liked their hats, but it was a tiny store and I needed to get away from that idiot- nice education you taught your daughter lady!! 😣😡

My grandfathers cousin was in Japan. He's, if I remember correctly, a translator for many languages at the EU headquarters in Brussels, so he knows like veeery many languages. So he was in some kind of train (I don't really know details since I've only heard this from other people, told in a not that detailed way) and there were these Japenese girls who thought my grandfathers cousin looked strange, they had probably not seen many finnish people in their lives so that's understandable. Then they started to talk to eachother in japanese like "owh that guy has some weird clothes" and stuff like that, assuming that he wouldn't understand anything. Well, he didn't straight up say to them that he understands every single word they are saying, but when it was his stop and he was about to leave the train he said to the girls "you have very strange clothes on you, happy rest of your day" in perfect japanese and left the train. Of course, no one knows what the girls reactions were but I'm assuming they were very suprised. After that it's always been a funny story to tell among our relatives.

It's strange to see this because I heard Vietnamese are some of the nicest people. I guess that is true for all cultures and races. Most people are nice, some are not.

I was on a tour (with my Australian wife and in-laws) where our group had a large number of Chinese tourists. I am of Chinese blood and did spend my first 12 years in Malaysia and Singapore. My wife had also lived and worked in China for a few years as well. The Chinese tourists had started talking about us. I said "Really? That's interesting." in Chinese and their shock and embarrassment was just so funny.
Don't know how they can assume that I won't understand Mandarin when I look Chinese/oriental.
On a different note, I had taken some guests at work to lunch and spoke some French that I had remembered from my backpacking weeks in Quebec. They were surprised that I sounded like a Quebecois. I told them that the only French that I had learnt was from my time at Quebec. I had not realised that I sounded like a Quebecois as I had not travelled in France yet.

People’s ignorance in this day and age is still incredulous to me!! She let herself down. My brother was I. Vietnam before Covid shut everything down and he had an incredible time. The food in the Chinese restaurant looked so amazing, it made me hungry!

Io sono Inglese e vivo a Firenze da quasi cinque anni, sempre per lavoro, e capita anche a me in continuo, soprattutto quando si tratta del cibo. Due parola: ketchup e pasta: Divertente no? Ho un sacco dei amici fiorentini però che sono coltissimi e mi danno spesso l'occasione di cucinare. Bisogna trovare la gente giusta per te quando vivi all'estero.

Perfect comeback 😆 When I was in southern France, Some people were talking about my friend and me in Occitan. They were saying how cute we were, and “I’ll take this one,” “I’ll take that one.” We responded, “Are you sure you want him?” and they were mortified! 😂

Omg. As an Asian American girl with a half sleeve tattoo I was flying to AZ once and this Chinese family passed by me in the aisle and the dad looked at me and said in Chinese, “she looks horrifying.” And I just spoke back to him in mandarin that I didn’t find myself horrifying at all and I’m actually quite nice. 💀 he looked like he seen a ghost. His wife apologized to me 😂😂 I feel sorry for that family.

I mean you did say you’re Asian American, so his fault for probably speaking your mother tongue right infront of you lmao. Bro has no awareness.
