I don't know why this video was recommended to me but it's a joy to see foreigners in an Asian country properly knowledgeable about local language and politeness, and Grandma clearly is a treasure who needs to be protected at all cost! I wish I get to visit Vietnam one day!
Somehow stumbled upon this video when I was watching another expat in Vietnam and I'm floored by this grandma's kindness and hospitality. You can tell she appreciates how your videos has brought customers for her to be able to raise her family and pay her workers. She genuinely loves you guys that she's treating you two quite literally like her own grandkids. It's so wholesome!
Well actually her dimsum place is quite famous and they sold out some popular dishes even before 9 a.m :)) but yeah I have been eating here since I was a child and I stumbled upon this video too and was delighted to see other's perspective on her hospitality

Mình người Bắc từng có thời gian sống trong Nam, phải công nhận trong đó nhiều người lớn tuổi rất gần gũi và tình cảm cho dù mình chỉ là ngừoi xa lạ, đợt đó mình thuê nhà của 1 bà cũng lớn tuổi ở cầu kho quận 1 bà vừa cho thuê nhà kèm bán hàng ăn cơm trưa. Mà đợt đó mình bị lừa mất 1 khoản tiền và phải về lại ngoài Bắc, phá hợp đồng thuê nhà giữa chừng mà bà gọi riêng mình ra cũng bảo “bà thương thương con làm việc học tập ở xa xứ lại còn bị mất tiền và ko còn nhiều tiền trong ngừoi để về quê nên bà trả hết tiền cọc mà con phá vỡ hợp đồng để con về”. Mà từ bấy tới giờ cũng chưa có dịp quay lại thăm bà….
Ngày càng nhiều người Băc vào Nam định cư, nhưng những người dân Bắc sau 2000 sống ít có tình cảm với người chung quanh chăc tại họ có chút ít vốn liếng, họ cảm thấy mình hơn người khác!
@@thivanlyau8937 Mình lại nghĩ khác đó bạn, chẳng phải họ có tình cảm ít hay nhiều đi mà vị thế họ khác, Người Bắc hay người Trung, Miền Đông Và Tây lên + vào Sg những năm trước họ đều khó khăn như nhau vào tìm kiếm cơ hội việc làm ở chỗ đông người nên họ tiếp xúc nhiều tầng lớp xã hội cũng dễ gần hơn và cũng phải cam chịu hơn, như trước đây 20 năm người thanh nghệ tĩnh bị dân (ở thành phố lớn) với dân mt tui quen gét luôn cho là họ ở cửa trên nên thân thiện nhưng vẫn coi thường t nghe họ nói xấu sau lưng suốt người thanh N, T hồi đó họ vẫn im lặng mỉm cười cày như trâu chó ko có ngày đêm ( vẫn nhớ câu ô chủ khách sạn bàu cát bây giờ) xưa nói dù có hốt cứt anh cũng làm nguyễn là có tiền ai nói gì kệ. As a Vietnamese Californian, she reminds me of all my aunties/grandmas. So sweet, so precious, and just want to cook, and see your face light up when you eat it. She's so caring, and hardworking.
She literally treats you as her grandkids, bringing food freshly cooked, esp. expensive beef, asking you if it tastes good... and watching you eat until you finish her food or else she'll be upset, haha.... 🥰 Cherish your Vietnamese grandma , Chris, hope to see you visit her once in a while. 🙌 Will support her myself this weekend. 💙

I will absolutely be stopping by here and getting that noodle dish. I may even buy the bag of noodles and bring them myself to save her the time. Because of your last video of her, last year I went to have breakfast at her place when visiting Vietnam. I even mentioned you guys to her, and she said you guys were very nice. After ordering food, they brought out more than what I ordered. So I told her daughter that I did not order that much in which she replied, "you only pay for what you eat. That's how I knew you dont have to eat all of what they bring to you.
this is the way the old style Chinese restaurant serves customer, they usually bring out dim sum couple small dishes for your table even you don't order yet, but they will take them back to the kitchen and you only pay what you already eat
Such a sweet video. I especially loved when he asked the grandma what noodles they were and she just replies "the one you had the other day," when in fact it was years before. So adorable and feels like great friends meeting up years later and feeling like just a few days had past since last meeting. She's so sweet 😍

I love Vietnam. Spent three years there teaching and travelling around. I miss it so much, I will go back this year, but got hospitalised in Hanoi due to the air polution early 2021. Its not the cigarettes, its the fumes from traffic and burning stuff in the streets, especially in Hanoi/Saigon. My doctor told me "you stay in Hanoi, you die", after a chest infection that lasted six months, followed by 90% hearing loss when it spread from my chest to my head. Forced to come back to the UK in 2021. I could have moved to the central highlands, or the coast for cleaner air I guess, but I love Hanoi, and my girl is there too. She has been here 4 times so far, so in the future we plan to spend 6 months in each country. She loves it in England
I hope you get better soon. I am Vietnamese but only been there once when I was 9 years old for two months and now I am 36. You are very lucky to have been able to live there ❤. All the best, and a speedy recovery.
In the 1970’s I rented a room in house with 6 students from Hong Kong . They treated me the same way as this. I was overwhelmed by kindness and made to feel special. Especially at meal time. The food just kept coming. Later I learned that it is polite to leave something on your plate otherwise the host can think you are telling him he did not serve enough food. Whereas my upbringing was if I didn’t finish everything it is disrespectful to my mother and her hard work. This led to many meals of me being overstuffed but so happy.

How unbelievably generous that woman is! Almost made me cry how caring she was. Struggling as a single mother and grandmother but still wanting to get the special beef and noodles just for you. It's the type of shit you mostly see in Disney movies and rarely in life.
The grandma is so sweet and honestly. She really loves you guys. The economy has been hard for for restaurants in general, specially for someone like her. it’s so funny when you guys couldn’t speak English 😂 because I’m be in that situation (which I couldn’t remember how to say something in Vietnamese).
I am sure the food was delicious but the most amazingly delicious and beautiful thing was grandma. The fact that grandma went running to the store to buy noodles and came home and cook them for this 26 year old kid that she saw in you was a beautiful thing ! Your northern accent is pretty spot on. I usually can’t fully understand these other expats without reading subtitles (or closing eyes) when they speak Vietnamese. But with yours, I can understand by purely listening. Good job!
I always enjoy the visits to see Grandma in Saigon. She is so genuine. Her making the quick trip for noodles and preparing the beef just for you and Max makes her more special. And Mai asking for help with her English from the "pretties", how can you not help.
It is nice that you and Max can speak Vietnamese and ride motorbikes to explore places in Vietnam in such granular details. What an experience. A mix of heart warming traditional Chinese-Vietnamese and old Vietnamese customs is still there but hidden in plain sight for the adventurers to find out. I remember in the old tradition before 1980s, my family and others in the neighborhood always had a pot of tea for drop by guess. People behind us had big clay jars of water in their yards for anyone to drink from. No question asked. Neighbors came and chatted frequently. On the third day of the Tet New Year festival, we began to visit neighbors to greet and wish them luck. Street vendors did not have to pay us to use our front yards. It is such a contrast to the urban life style in the cities or towns there today. Saigon, Hanoi are much more modern now but also carry with them big pollution and the stress of fast life style.
What an incredibly sweet lady. You gotta do something nice for her like renovate her shop or stock it with new appliances when she's not around. God knows she won't willingly take your money lol. She deserves it.
she reminds of our grandma. Grandma's love language is: ''wouldn't stop feeding meee'' and her food is always so good (even better than my mom cooks lol). I miss my grandma😭

For those non-asians who may not know--this is how asian grandmothers are when they see grandchildren… they are so obsessed with making sure children/grandchildren have had food to eat and eat a lot! They will go out of their way to do so! This was how my mother was to children, my nieces and nephews!

Such a super sweet lady, if she won't take your money maybe try buying her supplies that she can't refuse. I did that in China in 2019 when the hosts I was staying with refused money. I left them with produce/supplies that I couldn't travel with and would have gone to waste.

I love Vietnam. Spent three years there teaching and travelling around. I miss it so much, I will go back this year, but got hospitalised in Hanoi due to the air polution early 2021. Its not the cigarettes, its the fumes from traffic and burning stuff in the streets, especially in Hanoi/Saigon. My doctor told me "you stay in Hanoi, you die", after a chest infection that lasted six months, followed by 90% hearing loss when it spread from my chest to my head. Forced to come back to the UK in 2021. I could have moved to the central highlands, or the coast for cleaner air I guess, but I love Hanoi, and my girl is there too. She has been here 4 times so far, so in the future we plan to spend 6 months in each country. She loves it in England

In the 1970’s I rented a room in house with 6 students from Hong Kong . They treated me the same way as this. I was overwhelmed by kindness and made to feel special. Especially at meal time. The food just kept coming. Later I learned that it is polite to leave something on your plate otherwise the host can think you are telling him he did not serve enough food. Whereas my upbringing was if I didn’t finish everything it is disrespectful to my mother and her hard work. This led to many meals of me being overstuffed but so happy.

I always enjoy the visits to see Grandma in Saigon. She is so genuine. Her making the quick trip for noodles and preparing the beef just for you and Max makes her more special. And Mai asking for help with her English from the "pretties", how can you not help.
It is nice that you and Max can speak Vietnamese and ride motorbikes to explore places in Vietnam in such granular details. What an experience. A mix of heart warming traditional Chinese-Vietnamese and old Vietnamese customs is still there but hidden in plain sight for the adventurers to find out.
I remember in the old tradition before 1980s, my family and others in the neighborhood always had a pot of tea for drop by guess. People behind us had big clay jars of water in their yards for anyone to drink from. No question asked. Neighbors came and chatted frequently. On the third day of the Tet New Year festival, we began to visit neighbors to greet and wish them luck. Street vendors did not have to pay us to use our front yards. It is such a contrast to the urban life style in the cities or towns there today.
Saigon, Hanoi are much more modern now but also carry with them big pollution and the stress of fast life style.
What an incredibly sweet lady. You gotta do something nice for her like renovate her shop or stock it with new appliances when she's not around. God knows she won't willingly take your money lol. She deserves it.

For those non-asians who may not know--this is how asian grandmothers are when they see grandchildren… they are so obsessed with making sure children/grandchildren have had food to eat and eat a lot! They will go out of their way to do so!
