How fun shopping and planning Thanksgiving with your mom. My parents always host Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We all pitch in and bring dishes. I have been doing the turkey breasts for the past few years along with a few other dishes. For Christmas we do brunch, basically the same brunch menu for about 35 years. Often there is a new addition to our brunch, sometimes making it to the permanent menu and sometimes not. Mom makes a creole dish called sausage sauce picante. Basically a most delicious tomato gravy with big chunks of onion, green and red bell pepper, and smoked sausage in a tomato gravy. It is so delicious. My sister makes garlic cheese grits and I make a hot curried fruit. We always have sister shuberts yeast rolls and pigs in a blanket. Sometimes we have a breakfast casserole. And my dad makes the most delicious homemade English trifle, complete with homemade custard, whip cream, and other yummy goodness. I think what makes it even more special is we only serve these dishes on Christmas. Can’t wait to see your video of you and your mom working together to prepare all the dishes.
Hi J, I lost my mom when I was 16 and I'm 62 now and Becky's mom reminds me of my mom too. They were all brought up the same way, helping others and create a beautiful, loving party for all to enjoy.
Your mom is so sweet and thoughtful for being so considerate of everyone's allergies and not wanting anyone to feel left out. I sure could use some of her tips for making things less stressful. I love cooking but I'm thinking that I might need to get one of those roaster pans because it stresses me out trying to bake a turkey and a ham and the casserole dishes. What a loving and gracious thing to do for your children and their spouses. As the mother of 3 teen boys, I'm always thinking ahead about things like that. It's so important to have nurturing relationships with in-laws (meaning you're NOT the complicated relative). I'm definitely going to implement that in the future. And on another note, Mom is rocking those wide framed glasses... love it!
As a flight attendant working on a private jet, I can say for sure your Mum's way of planning and putting together her celebration meal is a great way to ensure it's as smooth and stress-free as possible! I stopped going to the big family Thanksgiving because myself and my son have allergies and we could barely eat anything and I have made it my mission to cook Thanksgiving here at my house every year with all of my kids.
Such a good idea, particularly as families get older and more in-laws and extended family members become involved. It’s lovely to get together, but generally more people means excessive work for certain members or else some folk still being left out. Doing it this way is a way keeping traditions going whilst also considering others - I love it!
They make dairy free reddiwhip and cool whip! The reddiwhip had coconut/almond and almond, the cool whip is a brand by so delicious called cocowhip. You can also put the cream from a chilled can of full fat coconut milk or a chilled can of coconut cream in a bowl and use a hand mixer to blend them up with a little sugar and vanilla until you have peaks! Store in fridge or whip up before serving dessert so it's fluffy 😊

My family does thanksgiving potluck style. Everyone brings something. My mom is in charge of 3 appetizers, I have mac and cheese, sweet potato casserole, and fudge. Everyone brings like 3 things. We also have a huge thanksgiving turnout (30+ people). It’s in realistic to have one household do all the cooking and baking.
My family does this! My sister in law does the Turkey and stuffing because ironically it’s THE only things she cooks well. 😆 We divvy out the sides & desserts. I’m always on ham duty because the family prefers mine. We have anti Turkey people too so a ham is a must. 💁🏻♀️

I love your Mom! I also love your holiday/party planning. I do so many similar things and have been told I over plan so seeing you guys do this makes me feel so validated. One thing I do along with making a timeline is keeping a notebook where I write down each holiday/party and note who was there, what I served, what I prepped ahead, how much of everything I made and how much got eaten. This way when I want to do something similar I know if I need to make a double batch or to try something new because a recipe wasn't a hit - helps with reducing food waste and making sure my time spent is worthwhile.
My dad refuses to eat turkey so for the rest of the us we have turkey and ham also. Since my mom passed away in 2013, my dad seems to get more picky about his food every year but at 96 years of age I can we won't complain. Just fix what he will eat and then also fix what the rest of us want. Hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving with your family.

The first Thanksgiving I had after getting married, I had to go to 5 dinners. My parents, his parents, his grandparents on his mom's side, his grandparents on his dad's side, and our church's dinner. We were turkeyed out. 🦃🦃🦃

We have dairy free coconut whipping cream here in Canada. Not sure if you have it there, but it accommodates celiac & dairy allergies. Everyone likes it better than regular whipped cream! One brand also sells it in a pressurized can. Another tip for gravy is to mix some rice flour to thicken…adds a lovely nutty flavour instead of cornstarch which can make gravy weirdly sweet if you use too much.

I confess, I buy them frozen. When I’ve tried to make them they end up crumbling. I changed the plans, found a pumpkins chocolate chip muffin recipe that works. Will melt some allergen chocolate and drizzle on top to turn them into cupcakes! Susan, Becky’s mom

I have a printed list for tomorrow as I am shopping for our small local food aid christmas boxes. Shopping for 60 christmas dinners and boxing day ...... I think it will be almost as much as Becky & Mum bought ! LOL, Our local supermarket is 25 miles away, and it is a big trip. We will be repeating this over the next 3x sundays as our supermarket has a lovely community involvement officer who is giving us a discount. At the same time we are also fund raising! Last year by the time we had done all that - for about 2x the number of families we slept through Christmas and didnt really have anything special. This year we have already bought our Christmas dinner already prepared by some wonderful chefs, and delivered deep frozen. So we will be following Becky and her lead on frozen dinners, just not home made. Xx
I have done as much precooking as possible so I am not crazy on the holiday also. I usually start a couple days before and knock as much as possible out before the madness starts. For Christmas we started celebrating on Christmas Eve and that way I was able to completely enjoy Christmas with my children instead of cooking and trying to get everything done on that day

An easy cool whip alternative is place two cans of coconut milk in the fridge overnight, scoop out the coconut that’s on top, add some sugar, vanilla and mix and it’s just as good as dairy cool whip.

I’m a new sub and FINALLY someone that’s like me with cooking. JUST last night I FINALLY had enough saved to get a stove. The old one - the oven went 😳 so everything was a slow cooker or toaster oven and I’ve been in the kitchen ALL morning. This is amazing! Early in my relationship with my now-husband, his family always went "down-home to grandma's house" I was able to experience that for a couple of years, Grandma, Grandpa, all the aunts, uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, etc. The house was full, smelled so good, people on top of people, it was loud with stories, laughter, and smoke (LOL-it was the early 80's). Then we lost Grandpa and Grandma moved up to live near her daughter and everyone had their own holiday. Enjoy this while you can, that first year we thought thank goodness we didn't have to make that 3-hour drive just to drive 3 hours back exhausted and full, by early afternoon we realized just how lucky we were. Grandma passed shortly after and the whole family was never together in the same house again. Even now I can hear the racket and remember stepping outside in the cold so I could think for a min because of the chaos, it was a short moment in time few get to experience nowadays.
You can see why Becky turned out to be such a sweetheart!

I love your Mom! I also love your holiday/party planning. I do so many similar things and have been told I over plan so seeing you guys do this makes me feel so validated. One thing I do along with making a timeline is keeping a notebook where I write down each holiday/party and note who was there, what I served, what I prepped ahead, how much of everything I made and how much got eaten. This way when I want to do something similar I know if I need to make a double batch or to try something new because a recipe wasn't a hit - helps with reducing food waste and making sure my time spent is worthwhile.
My dad refuses to eat turkey so for the rest of the us we have turkey and ham also. Since my mom passed away in 2013, my dad seems to get more picky about his food every year but at 96 years of age I can we won't complain. Just fix what he will eat and then also fix what the rest of us want. Hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving with your family.

The first Thanksgiving I had after getting married, I had to go to 5 dinners. My parents, his parents, his grandparents on his mom's side, his grandparents on his dad's side, and our church's dinner. We were turkeyed out. 🦃🦃🦃

You can make dairy free whipped cream out of coconut cream. Chill the can and whip with sugar,, vanilla, and cinnamon.
We have dairy free coconut whipping cream here in Canada. Not sure if you have it there, but it accommodates celiac & dairy allergies. Everyone likes it better than regular whipped cream! One brand also sells it in a pressurized can. Another tip for gravy is to mix some rice flour to thicken…adds a lovely nutty flavour instead of cornstarch which can make gravy weirdly sweet if you use too much.

I confess, I buy them frozen. When I’ve tried to make them they end up crumbling. I changed the plans, found a pumpkins chocolate chip muffin recipe that works. Will melt some allergen chocolate and drizzle on top to turn them into cupcakes! Susan, Becky’s mom

Our local supermarket is 25 miles away, and it is a big trip. We will be repeating this over the next 3x sundays as our supermarket has a lovely community involvement officer who is giving us a discount. At the same time we are also fund raising! Last year by the time we had done all that - for about 2x the number of families we slept through Christmas and didnt really have anything special. This year we have already bought our Christmas dinner already prepared by some wonderful chefs, and delivered deep frozen. So we will be following Becky and her lead on frozen dinners, just not home made. Xx

I have done as much precooking as possible so I am not crazy on the holiday also. I usually start a couple days before and knock as much as possible out before the madness starts.
For Christmas we started celebrating on Christmas Eve and that way I was able to completely enjoy Christmas with my children instead of cooking and trying to get everything done on that day
That grocery list organized by the rout 🤯 love it. I love that we all have a way to go through a store 😂 if I take any other rout I'm lost!

An easy cool whip alternative is place two cans of coconut milk in the fridge overnight, scoop out the coconut that’s on top, add some sugar, vanilla and mix and it’s just as good as dairy cool whip.
And certainly with no preservatives it would be healthieer

I’m a new sub and FINALLY someone that’s like me with cooking. JUST last night I FINALLY had enough saved to get a stove. The old one - the oven went 😳 so everything was a slow cooker or toaster oven and I’ve been in the kitchen ALL morning. You can make “whipped cream” from the liquid (called aqua faba) from the chickpeas.
I LOVE YOUR MOM'S GROCERY LIST. It makes way more sense to checkbox things you need as you go, instead of trying to think back and remember if you need something. Definitely stealing this idea. Thanks mom!
This is amazing! Early in my relationship with my now-husband, his family always went "down-home to grandma's house" I was able to experience that for a couple of years, Grandma, Grandpa, all the aunts, uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, etc. The house was full, smelled so good, people on top of people, it was loud with stories, laughter, and smoke (LOL-it was the early 80's). Then we lost Grandpa and Grandma moved up to live near her daughter and everyone had their own holiday. Enjoy this while you can, that first year we thought thank goodness we didn't have to make that 3-hour drive just to drive 3 hours back exhausted and full, by early afternoon we realized just how lucky we were. Grandma passed shortly after and the whole family was never together in the same house again. Even now I can hear the racket and remember stepping outside in the cold so I could think for a min because of the chaos, it was a short moment in time few get to experience nowadays.
