26:43 That moment when Mao hears about Lacan for the first time is one of the best conveyed "MC's beyond angry" moments I've ever seen.
They just played it really well.
- Sudden drop off ambient sound captures attention
- Exposition for just a fraction of a second leaves one's mind racing trying to comprehend what was that
- Even before Jinshi steps back she's already back to normal.
- Leaves one with more of a gut feeling of _"she _*_hates_*_ that man"_

I loved how quick they made that shot, because thus far the show has largely been light and fun. The sudden very serious descent was very welcome.
I've NEVER realised that the third quarter is so obviously highlighting Jinshi and Maomao's relationship. And that transition to the fourth quarter is nothing short of amazing. And I am SO excited for the wins vein that is Lakan's storyline I'M HYPED.
About pufferfish (12:07 ), someone with background in medecine reacted to that episode and commented that different species of pufferfish had different part of their body toxic. So mostly correct info.

I’m sure you’ve heard this a thousand times but I really love how you give people a deeper appreciation and love for their favorite shows. Now, whenever I start a new anime, I check if you’ve covered it because not only have I really liked most of the stuff you’ve reviewed, but through watching your videos I get to enjoy the same story twice as much.

As, I absolutely loved Apothecary Diaries and thought I got all the details and scenes but watching your reviews made me appreciate and uncover even more elements of the show to love it even more! About her dad not her blood father? I guess you missed that one. At the end of episode 9, when she discover her dad was the one whi delivered the last emperor second son and Ah-Duo baby. It was spefically mention he was an Eunuch doctor. I guess many were surprise by the plot twist of the doctor being her dad, they missed it was say he was already unable to have children, even before she was born.
a bit of a misunderstanding in ep 17 - Maomao's "father" wasn't made a eunuch because he studied abroad; he was made a eunuch because he was a male serving in the inner palace (rest is a little too spoiler…)
A policy came down (likely spearheaded by the previous empress dowager) that all men serving in the inner palace would be made eunuchs in order to "protect" the emperor's "flower garden". In Maomao's "father's" case, there formerly were numerous doctors that worked there, but 1. because women aren't allowed to be doctors, and 2. unlike his colleagues he dawdled in getting out of the inner palace, he was made a eunuch in order to continue serving the palace in his chosen profession. Where studying abroad comes into this is because he did that he brought back knowledge of medicine from the West that wasn't widely known in Li (this country's name), which makes him an even more valuable doctor and much less likely for the inner palace to let him go - or escape.

4:44 It did make me laugh when Jinshi responds to Maomao that he has is own idea of how that scent could be acquired, which really helped to show how their working together enough to understand what the other is thinking.

I did it, I watched the first season of this glorious anime after being inspired to last week. I am glad I did because the plot really picks up in the second half and I wanted to see all the juicy bits.

For episode 17, I am still convinced that Jinshi did all of that just to have a date with Maomao.
What Jinshi did at the restaurant isn’t made clear, but he had some business there that required extreme discretion.
Maomao assumes he’s going there because that business serves the waitresses in addition to the food. Jinshi didn’t know about this and was not happy when he learned about it.
Getting to go on a “date” with Maomao was an obvious side-benefit, but wasn’t the original goal.
Additional information relevant to the animé:
Maomao’s teaching materials were written by the ladies of the Verdegris House and produced at a local printing workshop. They feature detailed instructions and frequent illustrations. Depending on their proclivities the printers either had the best or worst day of their careers.
Jinshi later asks Maomao about the printing workshop as he is interested in getting them to produce teaching materials to increase literacy among the serving girls of the Rear Palace.
Jinshi’s alias when dressed as a servant, “Jinka”, is an extremely odd choice. Maomao explains in the light novel that the Linese character for “Ka”, “flower”, is technically reserved for the names of members of the Imperial Family and in theory should be off-limits for commoner names. The rule is not enforced as it is impossible to stop uneducated farmers from naming their daughters after flowers but a high-ranking official such as Jinshi serving in the Emperor’s palace is typically expected to know these things and respect them.
Speaking of names that include “Ka”, Maomao’s older sister Joka chose that name as a petty slight towards the Imperial Family and is taking full advantage of the fact that the rule isn’t enforced.
Standard procedure at a brothel like the Verdegris House is to evict any courtesans that contract syphilis, who will ultimately die in the street after spreading the illness some more. That this particular courtesan has been allowed to stay without working and received treatment at the Madam’s expense is a shocking show of generosity when one remembers that Maomao is constantly worried that her granny will sell her off.
Suiren’s comment about nobles and commoners not being so different was a transparent criticism of Maomao’s excessive adherence to social norms to the detriment of her interpersonal relationships.
Lakan brings a couch into Jinshi’s office so he can lounge around and proceeds to just leave it there. He also brings messy snacks with him and gets crumbs and oil stains all over Jinshi’s paperwork.

26:54 In the manga her face looked different. Less angry to more horrified.
That episode fifteen scene with Lakan was a translation error. Everyone who read it thought he r word the consort but people who read the manga/light novels know that was wrong. Translators also confirmed it.
The final quarter is going to be amazing. Let's go!

The show didn't actually get me invested until 26:40 . Until then it was pleasant but simple (and quickly getting repetitive)--but from that glowering look onward a really compelling character story started and it ended up being fantastic!
