      But how should the car know if you are going on a short trip? How often do you enter "Grocery store, 3 km's drive" into the navigation? ;). And if there was a way for the user to turn the preheating off, everyone would do it to get more range, and then the battery would be constantly cold, not deliver the power it should and accept even less charge.

    • @mikaelpettersson5916
      @mikaelpettersson5916 3 года назад +1

      Km /hour is more informative and is the preferred way to compare cars. But on everyday use, as we pay per Kwh, that is the information we need. (that and charging time as that is a factor as well).

    • @logicalChimp
      @logicalChimp 3 года назад +2

      @@mikaelpettersson5916 km/hr makes sense from a non-technical user perspective (after all, what most people actually care about is how far they can travel, not what the machine is actually pumping out), but it needs to be accurate, and it needs to be consistent (no changing to km/min when charging quickly, etc).
      That said, I also agree with others that it should show what the charge rate is - as additional / alternate information, for those that prefer to see it that way, given that kW is - currently - the industry standard. It's fine for VW to think their approach is 'better', but they should include the industry standard option as well (especially as it's just a software display value - it's not like they have to provide extra hardware, etc)

    Lane assist is great on the Autobahn when there is no construction... otherwise it needs to be turned off. A few years ago, I had a few Ford rental cars (Focus, Mondeo) and they had buttons on the steering wheel to disable lane assist, which was very useful to quickly disable the feature when I was going through construction zones. Leaving it on was dangerous! They really should give you the option to program a hot button on the steering wheel to any shortcut you would like. E.g. hold a button to activate/deactivate a feature. And non-illuminated climate and volume controls, completely unacceptable!

    • @steveunderwood3683
      @steveunderwood3683 3 года назад

      Not all lane assists are created equal. The one in my Volvo works really well on highways. Even when it can't track the lanes there is no particular reason to disable it. You just need to do the steering yourself until it can acquire the lane again. The only dangerous thing is to rely on it to the point where you aren't bothering to look.

  • @bazoo513

    The answer to many of these complaints, including the one that Mr. Ulbricht said they will not change, in _configurability._ For goodness' sake, this car, and any EV, is a computer on wheels! _Everything_ on the dashboard(s) and many other things should be user-configurable, with preferences tied to user profiles. Again, Tesla is better here, but they don't go far enough, either.
    Somewhere deep in configuration menus should be a "geek mode" toggle that would enable things from simple changing charging speed from nebulous "km/h" to actual power, to bringing up whole synoptic pages with battery, motor, electronics and coolant temperatures, power used by various components, acceleration, power and regen in actual power units (along with friction brakes application) etc, something like all those data displayed by various OBD II monitoring apps.
    Majority of "ordinary" users would still use the HMI as it is, and if they stumble into the geek mode it would be easy to get back to the safety of "factory configuration". But driving this car could be so much more fun if we were given an opportunity to see what is it actually doing.

    • @mark.j.wilson
      @mark.j.wilson 3 года назад +2

      For me a tesla is a software company building cars, and VW is a car company doing software. Up until now EV's were aimed at the "tech" aware people lead by Tesla, VW are trying to aim this at everybody, and not everybody understands KW they just want to know if I charge it for 30 minutes how far can I go, and for that km/h works fine. oh by the way it kills me not knowing more about the state of the battery, thinking about going down the OBD port route...

    • @bazoo513
      @bazoo513 3 года назад +1

      @@mark.j.wilson I agree. VW at least knows what belongs to buttons and stalks, and what to touch-screens, and their augmented reality HUD is awesome. The only reason I can think of why Tesla does not provide HUD is their pretending that full Level 5 autonomy is around the corner; that, and penny pinching.
      Still, more configurability, pretty please, Mr. Ulbricht!

      @@EinzigfreierName _None_ would be confused by it if you hide it deeply enough. Call it "car internals service mode" or something similarly scary, if you must, or activate by a sequence of button presses or PIN code or whatever.
      But, let's face it, EVs are practically everywhere still cars for tech savvy, not because "ordinary" drivers wouldn't enjoy them, but simply because we tend to be early adopters. A singla competent GUI programmer could code the useful amount of features in several months. You know, those guys who elsewhere program fart mode. :o)

    Watching your back catalogue as we bought a used ID.3 1st 3 weeks ago. We had a terrible 12v battery drain causing expensive vamp drain on the main battery but at the moment a replacement 12v battery under warranty seems to have sorted this. Time will tell.
    The car screen shows that it is currently on version 2.3 software but VW insist that it is actually on 2.4. If the car cannot even show the correct software version I am uneasy about the quality of the software. I worked in IT at all levels from developer to programme manager over 25 years and such a simple error shows a significant lack of attention to detail. Worrying.
    My biggest bugbears at the moment are:
    1: why does the radio come on every time we start the car and why is it always on a station that we have not chosen?
    2: Why is it such a tedious and convoluted process to sign up to WeConnect for updates? The car should just be connected from day one, end of. Don't make life difficult for the customer.
    3: What is that ridiculous captive nut sticking out for in the underfloor compartment of the boot? One day I will catch that and no doubt cut myself. Why VW, just why?
    4: Why does it take so long for the rear view to cancel from the infotainment screen after reversing and as we are waiting to pull away or even actually moving?
    5: Why can't I see or have a service and maintenance history? It's my car, I paid hard-earned cash to buy it outright.
    Don't get me wrong, we are very happy overall with the car but small annoyances become long-term issues.
    VW has been too disrespectful of it's customers in my opinion.

    Like in your id3 the transmission mode is reset to D very time I start the car, even when the drive mode is in Eco. So every setting is set to eco, but not the transmission.
    I don't ordered Lane assist, but the Start-Stop-Automatic also resets. Fortuntatelly in my car that is still a physical button. Also the climate controls ar phyiscal so the computer can't reset it.

    Great job Chris really hope VW will watch this. The bizarre feature that the car shuts down when you your behind leaves the seat is not just annoying its bordering on dangerous. Some of us have kids and dogs. If you leave your seat the heat instantly stops working. The app to precondition is very unreliable. YES there is a feature to climitize directly but it does not work. Like never. So in a cold country your kids or animals in a driverless parked car will be cold or warm. Is this OK VW? My granddad's VW had no problems with this in the sixties. A Trabant in DDR would probably solve this task. You market this car as a family car.
    So VW please explain. To save juice is nice but to subject kids and animals to mother nature's whims. Over to you VW!

I wonder what Mr. Ulbrich thinks of his yearly statement from his energy provider that states the used electrical energy in kWh! Everybody that gets one of these statements - and I assume most of us do - are familiar with kWh and kW (hair dryer, oven, electrical heater...) so why the heck km/min as an electrical energy measure??? I drove the ID3 a couple of times and I really like the design and how it looks. I own a Kia eSoul since almost a year and I am really surprised that none of the complaints you’ve happen in my car. #1, I haven’t had any single reliability issue. Of course the car SW is not as ambitious as on ID3 and it doesn’t have OTA but is extremely reliable.
    #2, I think some problems are legal requirements so it happens on any car (like safety features always on) but climate and driving mode are always as I left it.
    #3 well that’s the problem of having a seamless keyless system.
    #4The UVO app doesn’t look as nice a the ID3 but what it matter the most it might have failed 5 out of 100 times but nothing to really complain about it.
    #5 take it or leave it, it’s been a controversial decision what Vw did.
    #6 regen works on cold weather as usual (sometimes less efficiently) but I does even at 100% SOC and the pedal feel is more than OK
    #7 I still don’t understand why they can’t show the standard kW when charging, it seems like German automakers want to make unique things (like BMW showing battery size in Amps/h) I don’t think this is sth to like about eSoul since it is a standard thing on 99% of EVs... polestar 2 and Volvo xc40 don’t have this and it’s crap.. I agree
    But the ID3 looks nice and some of the issues will be fixed eventually with updates, right?

    Good stuff. I agree with all. How could they not make those important buttons illuminated - it's a mistery. It is SO obvious. If I can chip in from my experience - seats do not have good lower back support. For me it's absolutely crucial, as it showed up. I get a back pain already after an hour of driving. Had to buy a cushion. Adjusted back support should be there in a car for 30 k Euros+... And in general - the car feels CHEAP. Had an e-Golf before. The car was finished almost like a premium brand. This one - almost like a Kia from the 90's ;-p OK... more issues - the touch sensitive buttons are a big mistake, especially on the steering wheel - never know what is going to happen when I press them. What's wrong with proper buttons?! The ergonomics for tall drivers is not so good - I have the seat almost all the way back and my left elbow lands on a hard plastic edge/corner of the door. Plus - the upper edge of the windscreen is quite low... I think the door is not that well insulated for cold weather (I mean like -10 degrees C, I live in Norway). The visibility forward is greatly reduced by extensive A pillars, quite dangerous. So much lighting inside... but no light in the glove box. No rear air vents for the passangers. No rear speakers even in the 1st Plus version. No height adjusted boot floor (again, only in the expensive versions...). Overall - a very well enginnered car with lots of super annoying quirks and cost cuts. The e-Golf felt like a lot better car - all the mentioned pitfalls were absent... Chris, good job!!! Keep it up!

  • @chemobejk

    I realized today that the request "please show kW instead of km/h" is too narrow and doesn't touch the real issue.
    I get it that one of the targets for the VW MEB platform is to be "easy for ICE drivers to switch over", by making many predetermined choices about the EV car, so that an inexperienced ICE driver doesn't have to worry about that. But what after one, two, 5 or even 10 years?? The *real problem* is that the now experienced EV driver is still treated by the SW as the inexperienced ICE driver, because the SW doesn't offer *any* choices!
    What I expect from VW to appear in the MEB SW, sometime after ME 2.1, are either
    (a) an "ask always" setting, i.e. every time it makes an EV choice for me I get the option to cancel/override it, or
    (b) a menu that list all the automatic choices built into the SW and let's me choose which ones to disable once I have gathered enough experience to make my own choice
    I guess you would call that "nerd mode".

I do try to brake early and lightly in my plugin hybrid Hyundai Sonata so that I don't go to mechanical but I would like to be confident that I can stop quickly. Of course, there is always the issue of how heavy an EV is as well. Maybe the brakes are undersized on the ID.3 .

    Same problem for years on we-connect on the e-Golf. They say their going to fix it. But still most days no contact. So pre-heating the VW way is to try with the app.... the go out to the car turn it on put the seatbelt on behind my back and then let it stay on.

      The programmed Preheating works all the time though.

      @@BatteryLife In the seven weeks I've got mine I only got the preheating to work once! And I still don't know what magic made it possible.
      I can't even program any departure times to my car or the app.

      Preheating works for me, just set your departure time with the climate set, then it's all good, it doesn't need we connect you can set it up in the car.

      Programming Pre-heating in the car works, but remote start it from we connect is spotty at best. VW claims to have we connect and we connect ID on 2 separate server’s.

      For the e-Golf I found out that when I sometimes lose contact with the car in the we-connect app I can open the glove-box and remove the SIM-card and re-insert it - then all of a sudden I have contact with the app again.
