The lack of 2.1 is "not a problem" at all if you have a TV with 2.1.
You need a GPU with at least 2 HDMI ports. What I do with my PC is to send an HDMI 2.1 to the tv, and another HDMI cable to the soundbar. The only "complicated" thing is you having to send another cable from soundbar to another, in my case tiny 7" monitor. In such configuration, both, Windows and GPU think your soundbar is a second display. You should only use the "extend these displays" setting. Only con, sometimes a program will only open in the tiny screen, and you'll have to drag it to the tv screen. But hey, that way I can always get the best video and audio at the same time.

This soundbar is phenomenal. I have a full blown home theater, but when listening to regular tv or streaming I do now want to fire up the home theater. I can fully state that this soundbar can replace most peoples dedicated home theater system. It is unbelievable the clarity, transparency, depth and the amazing surround effects; it is seamless all around you with no breaks in sound front/back. The width is as wide as your walls, I have heard sound coming from everywhere. Bass is more than adequate and blends seamless with the main speakers. Note, I installed with the sub port facing me. The processing power and ai to coordinate 21 amps is remarkable. No snaps when I switch between apps. Only downside is no documentation, even on-line manual is sparse info...have to rely on discussion groups. There are steps left out that is crucial in getting the eArc hdmi and soundbar to work. It cannot get better considering its compact size. As usual, top consistant review from you and Kristy.

I turned most of the channels down by a lot and then raised the main volume up and increased the centre channel a little bit, however if you're not watching Atmos content then I think the dialogue won't be as sharp on older sound mixes. I've had several soundbars and surround sound package but it was only when I purchased an AVR and a pair of stereo speakers did I realise what I was missing (stereo imaging, thumping bass, fully enveloping soundstage etc) besides going down this route one can always add to it overtime... surround speakers, subwoofers one can even get height speakers and experience a real non-virtual Dolby Atmos experience. Something IMO upward-firing speakers can't cut. Nowadays AVRs are so simple to setup they even walk you through the process.

The thing about budget to mid-price AVRs whenever the movies sound Dynamics changed one will usually find themselves having to reach for the remote control yet again! I was ready to write a ripping comment on you reviewing this minor incremental change in this Samsung bar, when in a previous review you remarked you would never review a model (re Arc) unless there was a good reason or new version. All I would say is that if the Arc review isn’t next Sunday, the army awaits! Maybe the Arc review, a 3yo product, is more about calibrating against other products reviewed and the Sonos universe than it is about the product itself; like an editorial on the state of things.

If this is helpful to anyone. Bought this soundbar for a small room. Rear speakers are great don’t necessarily have to have them behind you, just angled them towards my position more. Elevated the sub on a chest of drawers with the acoustic lens pointed towards me. Dolby Atmos sounds great. Until I elevated the sub I was disappointed with the bass, now it sounds fantastic. Hobbit and Lord of the rings sound great with it. Put sub to +3 and increase bass to 2, use space fit by activating the mic then turn space fit on. Then you’re good to go. Probably better in a large room but I’m more than happy with it.

I'd say if you can upgrade like I did for $110 over the Q930C absoletely go for it and you'll have the system for a long time and it can grow into a bigger space eventually. Each of them has their pros for my use case, I totally like the expandability of the Sonos system and I've read that adding 2 Era 300's to the system is game changing, however I the investment is much larger. I like that this combined with my Samsung tv would make the system even better and obviously the price difference is a huge factor as well. Exactly same here, while I have LG C1 65’ instead. The Q990C is now on sale, originally price is 16 000 NOK, but now 10 000 NOK. I like the idea of the sonos arc, but god damn what a expensive and slow-paced «investment» it must be. The arc itself is basically the price for this badboy on sale, so for me it’s a no-brainer; I’m getting Q990C. While the multiroom option with sonos seems so smooth, I just dont think it will be worth it, and therefore I’ll rather get this one instead, and just use a solid wireless speaker for kitchen, bathroom or bedroom as I like. I belive that is the most rational solution.

Paying 1000-1500$ more for ambeo Max is just to much when samsung gives so much bang for the buck in the family living room. If i had a dedicated home theater/entertainment room and wanted a soundbar there, sennheiser would be more tempting. But most likely a full klipsch system will be placed in such room the day our basement i renovated.

But if you look at it another way - for ex, let's say you own the 950A bar that came out 3 years ago and you need to get something new for whatever reason, if you went to the store and the only thing that was available was a bar from 3 years ago that hadn't been updated, you probably would feel shortchanged. Since everyone's buying cycles are different, it makes since that there's a new model released each year.

I see a lot of comments/questions regarding high ceilings. Andrew does address this sort of in this video, in that these soundbars with upward and side firing drivers are dependent on walls and ceilings to get the full benefit because the sound needs to bounce off. I personally wouldn't weigh height channels/effects heavily because a lot of movie mixes just aren't well done and most of us don't have perfectly square rooms.

I fully respect everything you both do. You have so much to try and remember to put in these videos and you do such a great job. There is no way you could anticipate every question we might throw at you. Also, neither of you are pinching pennies for equipment, nor lack the ability to a/b equipment, so I fully understand why you didn't/couldn't anticipate the question I have. I hope you see this and are able to address it, if possible. So...I love everything you've said about the q990c, and it is now at the top of my wish list after watching this, and other reviews. Now I just need to somehow save the money. My question is about building your own system, with AVR, speakers, etc. compared to the q990c. I heard Andrew say that he would go with AVR/speakers for music, and I'm glad to know that, but my question is in regards to movies only, in order to make an apples to apples comparison. The AVR market is vast and daunting in cost and specs. So......in regards to making as identical a sound as possible, for movies, in ATMOS, number of channels and overall quality and experience... how much would it cost to build a system that is legitimately comparable to the q990c in sound, for home theater use? It would also be nice to know the number of channels an AVR would need in order to compete toe to toe with the q990c. Could a person save money and get equally good movie quality sound by buying an AVR and speakers? After watching this review, it appears to me that the q990c is not only the easiest, but also the least expensive way to get a really, really good ATMOS/movie theater experience at home, but I'd hate to go the wrong direction because of my lack of understanding something that may be obvious to others. If you can answer, I thank you very much.

    • @asphodyn
      @asphodyn Год назад

The downside of the soundbar system is that you can only do so much with digital signal processing. Ultimately there are some hard constraints set by the size of the drivers used in terms of sound, and the limited number of speaker locations used in terms of soundstage and localization. For the money, the soundbar system is still hard to beat though. If you go the receiver route, you'd probably want to start with a 2.0 system and then add a subwoofer, center, surrounds, Atmos/heights, etc. That way you can slowly build a quality system that makes the hassle and expense of going the separates route worth it. Something solid like an Arendal 1961 5.2.4 might cost you over $10k in the end. You also have to be willing to spend some time to dial in your system. So it's more of a process and different mindset.

But I still would pay no more then $1100.00 for this, I think it’s original asking price of $1800 was a lil steep, I still hope in the future Samsung Develops a stronger subwoofer that pairs with the 990 system

Hi, thanks for your reviews - they are really great! How does the 990c compare to the next Samsung soundbar in the lineup - the 930c? My room is perfect square 12 by 12 feet so I'm trying to find a cheaper dolby atmos solution for gaming/watching tv shows.

What would you choose as your ultimate decision, Sony tv + HT-A9 or Samsung tv + Q990C? 🤔 Or a mix maybe? Answer please 🙏

I just got a Q930C to replace my Yamaha YAS-207. I wanted the 990C but Best Buy had the Q930C for $1000 and it looks to have the same features as its bigger brother with less fancy rear speakers and the older generation subwoofer. But since I don’t know better, this is the best sound I’ve ever experienced. I also roll with adaptive.
Only issues annoyances. Sometimes when I play directly using Spotify via WiFi, it won’t start up the rear speakers. I have to airplay Spotify or use some other sound source and then switch back to get the rears to go on. Other annoyance is that using my XBox will switch it to game mode, and when I switch back to Apple TV I have to manually switch it back to adaptive. Maybe there’s a way to fix that but I haven’t found a way to make that happen.
Bottom line, love it. It is awesome for all listening just like you point out in your 990C review.

Fun fact : the 990C (called the Q990C/XT) retails for 835 USD (29,900 baht on thailand samsung website) and I can get it for 665 USD (23,990 baht). I can also get the 990B for 500 USD (17,900 baht). The prices in US is just crazy.

Very nice response for a soundbar. And you can get a real subwoofer (svs, rythmik, psa etc and take out the weak Samsung subwoofer and have a very nice setup for the money. Very easy to take out the module and hook it to the new sub. That is the weakest link in all these soundbar systems. I did this with a Vizio soundbar in my bedroom.

Is a soundbar a better option than a multi-speaker 5.1 channels home theatre setup? We’re currently setting up a home theatre system for a room that is 4.5x3.6 size. As beginners in home theatre systems and soundbars, we're doing a lot of research to find the right products within our budget. We plan to install a 100” screen with a 4K projector. Would this soundbar be suitable for our setup? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

@@vasim11092 if you're going as far as setting up a 100inch screen with a 4k projector. I would look into a AVR like the Denon X4700H. Then getting speakers and subs from klipsch or other affordable brands and aim for at least 7.1.2 preferably 7.2.4/6 setup. That in my opinion would be sound enough to give a 100inch screen justice

Soundbars can sound great but they can't match an equivalently priced conventional 5.1 to 11.1 system. Soundbars are for people who don't want to bother with too many speaker wires running all over the place or the bulkier size.
I also think soundbars have a lower life span.
But I'm sure you'll be pleased with this Samsung.

Hi Andrew, I would like to have your opinion on this - I have a TV that supports 4K @ 120hz and it has an eARC port as well. I have a PS5 which I will be using to play games and to watch movies using 4K Blurays. Since the Q990C doesn't support HDMI 2.1, will I get the maximum benefit from watching movies through PS5 using Blu-rays. If not what's the best setup to connect the TV, Q990C and my PS5 ??. Kindly consider this request and reply me.

Regarding the lack of HDMI 2.1on this soundbar, could I not just plug the PS5 or my Apple TV directly into TV to take advantage of HDMI 2.1, and have another HDMI cable connecting soundbar to the TV to get the audio ? Hdmi arch Is that reason when I go to settings, the dolby atoms is shaded, plus I don't see it on the sound bar. I called Samsung they sent over tech. And he didn't know anything. I am so frustrated. @@darrylchristian653, the approach is simple. if you have a device that outputs Dolby Atmos and you want your soundbar to have that sound, you connect the soundbar to the tv using the e-ARC HDMI port on the tv. The other device can be connected to any other HDMI ports on the tv and it will passthrough Atmos to the soundbar

It would be awesome if Samsung could make it to where you could add a second subwoofer. It would be even cooler if these sound bar manufactures allowed you to add your own subwoofers. I know you can on the Ambeo, but it also doesn’t have rear speaker modules. Great review 😊
