I first met Aaron at an Amatuer motocross event in 2015. We talked about racing, went for a walk, held hands and watched the sunset. Aaron is an amazing guy and I will never forget that day.

Its very inexpensive for a kid and their family to pick up baseball, basketball, football, etc. The barrier to entry in moto for most families is the cost. As for adults, they typically watch and follow the sports they played as a kid. So getting into something that A) flies under the radar as far as motorsports go and B) has a large cost to entry are hold-backs. Yes...I know the cost to enter F1 is 100x higher...but like Aaron said...these drivers get paid uber amounts of money and the entire series is televised on national tv. In the end...no matter what...it comes down to money

They need to do more for privateers. If a guy can qualify for 80% of the mains then they should be getting a piece of the pie. Travel money, no gate fees, and a modest salary. Without the privateers its hard for people to realize how good the top guys are. Also, the top guy need to stop bitching about lappers. Lappers are part of racing and you're expected to deal with it.

The promoters are crooks. Anyone making the main should be making $100,000 a year for 17 Supercross races and 12 outdoor races. They will make more money racing the World Supercross. There is more money there with 10% of the fans.

I despise the word lappers. Disrespectful as hell. At minimum call them lapped riders or riders being lapped. There are many derogatory terms that end with "ers" such as right wingers, pro lifers and anti-vaxxers

    • @tedturner9054

Why do "they" need to do more. Who volunteers to do more for anyone in a business. Keep showing up unrepresented and keep getting screwed over. The privateers are screwing themselves over. Take the same 10 riders that make the main and finish out of the points and put them on one team. The team bargains for the pay to put on the show. This wont work because there is another bunch of idiot privateers waiting in line to put on the show for free.

It takes a minute to understand it. When you see the ruts after a SX race and then know the speeds and the distance they fly to land in a deep rut 10" wide on the gas. Then you can appreciate it being bigger than 4 grand slams in the same game by the same person. these jumps and ruts are all over the entire course and usually 20+ laps. Crazy amount of work over years starting from childhood gets a fraction of a fraction of these Pros at compete at this level

That's also true. Folks I have shown MX to over the years think "oh that seems easy... can you do all that too?" (answer: "hell no!"). Whereas when they watch F1 or NASCAR they think "wow, that's scary fast". MX isn't a fast sport. It's more technical, which means you need to have tried it to appreciate it.

Look at how many people drive cars, have played Baseball and Football, Golf compared to racing Dirt Bikes. That's why Pro Dirt Bike riders make what they make. Reaching the masses make money! It equates to more of what people can relate to. I'm a dirt bike guy and I think these Pro's should be making a lot more than what they make. It's all about the powers to be making all the money. The riders are the show and they have to pay to race and the promoters make all the money.

Everybody Drives a car. Everybody can swing a bat, afford a mit and play catch. Everybody can throw a football in their backyard or have a Thanksgiving game. Motocross...well, it's like wake boarding, snow skiing and cage fighting. Less people can connect to it and relate. It's expensive really! You can't just go to the gym down the street or your back yard and dream of being a pro. It's been my contention for a LONG time that the promotion of Supercross and motorcycle racing in general, has been so under promoted by what I would consider rank amateurs! Supercross fans are an advertisers dream for marketing, the demographics are exactly where you want to reach, but when I look at what the sponsor list is - it's all the internal to motorcycle sponsorship. I have had people over who may have watched a F-1 race a few times, Nascar once or twice, and when they watch a race with me, they are amazed by the action and become huge fans. When you have stadiums being filled, when Nascar, Indycar, and others that are struggling to put 40% of the seats with a fan, that tells you something. Is Peacock the best TV package you can do? It all gets back to many years ago, MavTV was the live race for the Daytona Supercross. A basketball game was running late, 40 minutes into the Daytona race they finally started showing the race! The Superbowl for Supercross and that is the best we can do, 70% of the viewers had left, it's ridiculous!

And even the motocross was taped delayed all the way to like 2012 or something crazy! And they would show the 450 motos before the 250, it was out of order. It’s come a long way but can definitely go a lot further!

Meanwhile, every other racing series had programming you could watch. If the AMA had any clue on ratings, they could figure out production methods to provide EVERYONE with live stream and paid advertising for the sport. They seem to be stuck in the 1960's. It's all about eyeballs, with today's technology, the data is easy to present to sponsors, and as cheap as it would be you probably would triple the income to the sport by doing this.

Supercross needs Netflix to do a drive to survive style docu series on the sport. the explosion of F1 in the USA in the recent years can be directly traced to that. I agree the pay would help but the sport also has to generate the income. NFL has such massive tv deals that money directly effects the salary caps for teams. F1 also has massive budgets but the viewer numbers has to be there too. that's why something like a behind the scenes docu series that follows racers outside of the track and creates other storylines would bring people in. why do you think Deegan is so popular. its because they have built that online audience by showing a closer look inside of their family and what "makes them tick" Motocross is one of the toughest sports in the world. The edge of total success and failure is so razor thin that would keep audiences attention and drive them to want more. Tell the stories, story telling always wins when done right.

Motocross is such a sophisticated sport that most people can't relate to it. Stick and ball sports are much more relatable to people because most everyone has tried them with very little obstacles to overcome. Regular sports are much more accessible to people and easier to get into that's why they are so much more popular. Motocross is much harder to get into and participate in even at the most basic levels. Everyone drives a car and can relate to cars racing that's why forms of car racing is popular, people again can relate to it. That's why motocross will never go mainstream and that's kinda a good thing IMO. More growth would be great and is achievable though, just not the mainstream levels.

The television coverage does not get the casual viewer invested in the riders enough. The coverage needs to get the casual viewer more invested into the riders lives and do more personality based stories like they are now doing on Race Day Live. You have to get the whole family hooked into the experience not just the racer in the family. You gotta get more in depth discussions on the bikes and performance aspects to get the gear heads involved.

Secondarily, it’s not like there are basketballs, footballs, and dirtbikes to choose from in the elementary school gym. The typical urban or suburban kid has no exposure. I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm where I could keep a dirtbike and ride it every day. I had no parental support, so I was in my mid 20s before I had a chance to race for real.

The problem is most people can try to hit a golf ball or play soccer or a tennis ball, etc etc, if you don’t ride ya don’t follow it, ya didn’t play MX/SX in school, only kids of parents with cash played MX/Sx as kids. So most spectators of sports don’t even have Dirtbikes on the radar, F1 etc is on free to air, so even if ya never driven a go cart you do own a car so people sort of get into it.
Dirt bikes are something I love, but not many I know could careless, even brutal tracks don’t appeal to the average punter because they don’t know how brutal it is, they’re never done a ride in there life.
My mother used to asked me why I was worn out after a dirt ride , what ever the ride. As far as she was concerned I had a motor, it wasn’t a push bike so why was I puffed out. She didn’t know didn’t care, just seen the sport as easy and pointless. She loved V8 supercars/Nascar/F1 & football/Rugby/Golf etc etc, as far as mum was concerned these sports were gold & the people playing very talented & deserved all the respectin the world.

So yes motorcycles are expensive, that’s a thing. Putting that aside. What I see as a problem in the competitive side of things. Is the way the leagues are structured. You have children in the professional league… not in their own youth class, but with the adults… and you wonder why this sport isn’t working well? So the amateur leagues suck and get no attention from spectators because the competition isn’t there and there is no prizes available to anyone that does well except for first place in AA class. So nobody cares. If you are a gifted rider you can’t go pro/simi pro unless you drop out of school at 15. As much as people want to complain about the expense, this is a blue collar sport. You can’t participate in these races to get ranked and work a mostly full time job. It’s a blue collar sport, how about making it so blue collar people can participate in a series (amateur obviously) not just the one or two “local” races. One last thing- the expense of watching these pro races on pay-per-view is so high. What do you expect? I know technically you can watch on another site, but it’s live broadcast on a lame stream service that nobody wants/uses. Put the races on RUclips for free. I love watching the races, but I’m not going to pay that much every time. Some races are exciting enough to be worth it. But a lot of them aren’t. I’m not a comi, but the price is ridiculous. You can make it free on RUclips and monetize to make a lot of money. The reason it’s not more popular is the industries fault. Never wanting to give back, always taking that includes the pro athletes. Your league structure is retarded and inaccessible.

If motocross gets on the radar it will be bigger than any car racing formula one racing boat racing plane racing...... Any one can do that.... Not any one can ride a motocross bike... Trust me

Easy, this sport takes so long to get good enough to compete, kids are basically homeschooled in a RV, equity out of the house they once had to afford it, then when they get to the level, 17 year old walks up for an interview, sounds like he has a 5th grade education, why? because he essentially does. They would need to hire voice coaches, etiquette coaches of how to act when around a class of people that you want to have invested in you, that would also destroy the sport, they would bring in new rules, safety and environmental. To pay for the increase in salaries, Bikes and Gear would cost 10x. which would take it away from it's roots. $$$ rules and it cost too much for the average person to get into, F1 drivers come from money, moto riders do not.

The Privateers are the one's that struggle as gas travel gate fees and the averts to get people to watch are few and far between. Like Europe in the 80's 90's privateers would get start money to help that's all gone and Dorna FIM have destroyed big events like insurance for a world round is massive someone is making big money but it aint the riders. The TV coverage used to moan as heavy cables needed for the camera's as cost's for outdoors but now with wifi it's so simple but that's where greed comes in as in TV rights. Look at the world motocross rounds there isn't full line ups you had to qualify to get on the line or do the support races for start money. Motocross is slowly dying look at the crowds when Rick Johnson and the like rode supercross the stadium would be full. The outdoor national there would be 80+ thousand there. It's only hardcore fans now and that's not enough for a hard sport that has no rollcage and is very hard on the body look at the crowds when Bubba and Ricky battled.

The solution is more race teams willing to pay more. Triumph, beta, Ducati, entering the sport is going to make riders get paid more, IMO.

Y’all are stunting your own growth, everyone that loves moto knows ab TGO and those make sense being behind a paywall but the podcast should be free. You’ll build a bigger audience that will eventually make the jump and buy your premium content (ie TGO etc)

Motocross has been going down the toilet for a decade or more, just look how poor the depth of talent is, even the start gates aren’t full, mxgp is a joke and getting worse, gone are the glory days
Bring back an adult 125 class, and have 250cc class, get rid of the 450s and bring back qualifying on friday/Saturday, pay all qualifying riders start money and have purses that pay down to 40th

It's the ama not letting characters in the sport and motocross is full of them.every podium speech for the past decade or 2 has been the same speech rehearsed boring.
