    In this edition of hiking news I bring you a roundup of the latest and most exciting developments in the hiking and outdoor technology world. We start with an important update from Zion National Park, which has fully transitioned all its permits, including backcountry and Angels Landing permits, to recreation.gov. This new system aims to streamline the process and improve visitor experience by controlling the number of hikers, particularly on the famously crowded Angels Landing trail.
    Next, I discuss the phenomenon known as "Firefall" in Yosemite National Park, where the setting sun illuminates a small waterfall, creating a stunning visual effect. Due to its popularity, Yosemite now requires reservations during this period, emphasizing the importance of planning ahead for such unique natural events.
    On the technology front, SpaceX has launched new satellites that integrate 5G capabilities directly into space, allowing T-Mobile customers to enjoy extended coverage. This advancement promises to enhance connectivity for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in remote areas, ensuring better safety and communication options.
    For map enthusiasts, CalTopo has added new features like folders to help organize maps and incorporated more high-resolution LiDAR data into their platform. These improvements are designed to provide users with the most accurate and user-friendly mapping tools for planning their outdoor adventures.
    An unusual wildlife encounter was reported in Saguaro National Park, where a bobcat, unusually aggressive due to rabies, attacked a human. This rare incident serves as a reminder to maintain a safe distance from wildlife and to be cautious and respectful when encountering animals in their natural habitats.
    The news segment also touches on the dangers of hiking in snowy and icy conditions, as illustrated by a tragic accident on Mount Baldy. I stress the importance of proper preparation and caution when tackling such challenging environments, suggesting alternatives like guided snowshoe hikes for those looking to enjoy the snow safely.
    Additionally, I review the new Ultra Lone Peak 8 hiking shoes, comparing them to previous models and sharing my experiences with other footwear options that have proven effective in preventing blisters and providing comfort on the trail.
    The episode wraps up with a spotlight on community engagement and accessibility in the outdoors. I highlight the opening of a new Autism Nature Trail designed to make outdoor experiences more accessible for visitors on the autism spectrum and with various abilities.

    Just yesterday I took the safe service road up to the baldy notch, and part of it was extremely dangerous because it wasn’t cleared, and the ski area blocked off the cleared area. I was forced to turn around. It was so sad to see the signs about the woman that went missing, knowing that some of the footsteps we were walking through were hers. Thanks you for doing your best to keep us safe this winter!

    We were at the north rim of the Grand Canyon and this guy was standing about a foot from the ledge off trail. It gave me the creeps and I had to walk away.

    I really enjoy this periodic news update. Very informative! I think The Salt Lake City area would be a good spot for you to give a talk somewhere. The hiking community would love it! Bonus: The Wasatch has a some some really cool hikes, so you could do a lot of "How to Hike" videos. Two birds with one stone!

      Love the mountains outside of SLC - my wife used to travel there for work all the time and I would come on weekends and hit the trails, so many good options. I might be in SLC this Spring, will try and set up some kind of a meet & greet if so. 👍🏻

    I like what all these phone companies are doing with satellites! Thanks for sharing that info. As for rabid animals, I'm glad I've watched many videos of how they act and how they become vicious and attack humans. When I look at animals now, I tend to look for those kinds of signs so that I can avoid them if necessary.

    That's just tacky to ask you to do that type of story. I'm still saddened over the loss of Julian Sands. One time, up at the Marin Headlands, I had a bobcat running with me, just ahead of me on the trail for a little while. It was nice having the company. It was looking for rabbits I'm sure. :)

    Love what you do. My question is have you ever encountered a bear while hiking? 🥾 Am from Sunland Ca and I go to my location mountain alot, should I carry bear spray even if am hiking not deep in the Forest?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 месяца назад

      I've seen lots of bears in SoCal - most of the time they run away, sometimes they ignore me - you should be fine without spray, just make sure you give them a wide berth, especially if you see cubs

    Question curiosity, the watch looked like you were wearing was a Garmin. Its an obsession people have but what were you wearing in the video? I know while casual hiking I open the iPhone and bringup the Alltrails map to see where I am at and help guide my meandering. But it does imply cellular to find a hike at the place I happened to drive to which is somewhat spontaneous. Would a garmin watch achieve that kind of convenience albeit small screen? Not every little sanctuary thing is in alltrails but does the Garmin watch have the places just as much already on the watch? I also just go on roads with iphone regular Maps app to walkabout, would the roads be on the Garmin watch too?

      a garmin can have maps uploaded on to them via the app if that’s what you mean?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 месяца назад +1

      Garmin Epic Pro 51mm - all the maps are preloaded so no need for a connection or download - you can also navigate on the fly with it - roads, trails, etc.

    The mountain lions were hit by motorists, driving cars. It’s important we associate the human element when we talk about road traffic incidents and the responsibility motorists have to take, to be in control of a vehicle

      Many years ago I hit a deer, I was driving 25 mph, I never even got my foot off the gas pedal. The deer literally jumped right in front of me in a giant leap. It was truly terrible but there was nothing I could do. This is what most people say, they never even seen it coming.

    Giving an animal with rabies space is often impossible, there is a good chance it will aggressively attack because it is not thinking normally.
