You need a dehumidifier to remove the moisture, also check for leaks in the plumbing and fix if you find any, also check for roof and window leaks and repair if you have any
Cut out, tape, and mud are sometimes best option. Gives a chance to get a peek at electrical, plumbing, and ventilation systems to have a master plan of ultimate finished plan.
Hey. Interesting project. A a few recommendations that can help. 1 get a steam cleaner to remove/kill mold. 2 insulate the whole house (windows, walls, roof). 3 dig around the house and install water absorbent/water ditch). 4 plant some bushes that can absorb water from the ground around the house. 5 install balanced indoor ventilation. Doing those steps prevents most issues imaginable in the future. Good luck!
Love what you are doing to this cool home. Just want to let you know that bleach will not kill mold on porous surfaces so the dangerous black mold is still there and when you use the bleach, it spreads the mold into the air. I used to work for a company who did mold remediation and they had to use a special mold killer. I just don't want you to get sick from the mold. The USA epa has guidelines on this. Sorry for the news about the bleach but I can't wait to see the finished product. Also, please use a good mask with a good filtration system.
Matt - This was a good video! I think it was very helpful in addressing a common problem, when renovating/painting old walls. Continued Best to you on your House Journey. Cheers - Have a great week!
Excellent video! I’m so happy to see your progress since a year ago. You’re transforming the space beautifully and I fully appreciate the hard work you’ve put into this project.
Really, true inspiration on fixing up a home with mold and old paint. One of the most useful videos I've seen concerning actually going about and fixing things on an older home in Japan. I'm surprised the original owners haven't complained to you about selling it too cheap after your renovations. LOL!
If you can get a product called zinsser it’s awesome for stain blocking. Also to get ride of mould continue to spray with water mixed either oil of cloves. It’s a mould inhibiting agent bit first use exit mould. I work in hardware so know lots of painting processes Love your house and enjoying your videos
Thanks for the comment! I would love to use zinsser and I’ve used it for years in Australia. Unfortunately it’s difficult to find much depth in Japan for paints :(
Yes, I agree that oil of clove is a *much more effective* mould killer, since bleach only masks the problem and doesn't get rid of it. Ultimately, I would recommend borax. Then, maybe as a maintenance, I would use the oil of clove (which smells lovely).
With the timber, one consideration for down the track in other areas could be a heavy white stain with a hard wax oil. You’ll get the natural grain of the wood but it’ll be protected from mould and might be white enough to keep the room looking bright and modern. Think osmo and other hardwax oil products have white stains that you can use.
Beautiful house!!! If I may I have a useful tip for the mold. The only thing that can make disappear or destroys mold is salt (soda) . Mold is a living organism and bleach only bleach it doesn't clean. Once again beautiful house.
omg That mold would be a total deal killer for me. I have serious mold allergies. That changes absolutely everything (for me). That said, if mold doesn't affect your immune system, you got a good deal. I'm beginning to see why the Japanese tear their houses down & rebuild. The mold proliferation is a total game changer. The environmental expert who advised me on mold removal told me bleach does not work. You must use borax to actually kill the mold, and even once the mold spores are dead, they are still in the residence and will still cause allergic reactions in people, which is why they have professional mitigation. It's amazing that you have all this knowledge from your years of helping your father's construction/painting business. Super helpful for him to come and help out, as well. Honestly, I had no idea you had moisture leaking in from your room (massive condensation during winter, perhaps?). I sincerely hope you can get that addressed. An electric dehumidifier will be a monthly expense, but based on what I've seen in this video, it's an expense you cannot afford NOT to incur. You don't want the mold that is already there to keep growing and proliferating.
Can you please make a video explaining where you come from, how you manage to buy that house for $6000 and how you came to live in Japan in the first place…..thanks
I probably would have used a 2 or 3 bucket method to dip the dirty brush in. Also I didn't know about the wooden boards over the windows. Thanks! Learn something new everyday
Hi, Altogether from the very beginning you have done a fabulous job and I find youe videos very interesting! Will you share your story how you arrived to live in Japan and speak Japanese fluently? Thank you!
Oh my gosh. For future reference you could use a swiffer style mop, an easy ring sponge mop, or cotton style spin mop. For easier wall and ceiling cleaning, great for spring cleaning.
For future reference, you do NOT scrub it. Hard no on that. You use Borax to kill all the mold. I used a P100 mask, as well, to protect me from breathing in any of the mold spores as I was gently applying the borax/water mixture to the walls (and items). One of the worst things you can do is SCRUB mold. It only spreads the mold spores all over everything in the room and releases them into the air, which then allows the mold to spread to textiles, clothing, furniture and other surfaces (like sheetrock, which is a buffet for mold). Please, in the future, work smarter not harder (although you probably got a great abdominal & arm workout) and kill the mold rather than spread the spores all over the entire room.
A professional once told me that bleach will not kill all the mold. You need to use hydrogen peroxide. So I guess if your returns try cleaning it off with peroxide.
Wow the updates are looking great. Great idea with oil based paint on your walls. Huge gamechanger. Do you think a dehumidifier might help prevent mold in the future? Any preventative measures you’ll be taking? Love the videos so far!! Keep em coming ❤
Thanks! I have a couple of new dehumidifiers so I’ll see how it goes. The previous owners didn’t open those rooms much during summer so there was almost no air flow. Having windows open and using fans in summer should make a difference:)
Nope. Borax kills mold. Vinegar is more effective than bleach is, though. Bleach only turns it white. Mold can grow right on the lid of your vinegar bottle. Borax is the easiest, most effective solution and it is non-toxic to humans and animals. I paid $550 for that advice from an environmental expert who tests homes & interior air for mold. I share it with others for free.
Wow this is a night and day difference!!!! Its fascinating to me how you make it your own without a big budget. I have a question: Do you have to pay taxes for the house/property? Im asking because, despite the issues shown, its seems like an extremly good deal - but what if you have to pay huge amount of taxes ?Greetings from germany.
There usually are hidden taxes and fees of various kinds and they vary from prefecture to prefecture and house to house. That’s why there are a few agencies in Japan that specialize in helping foreigners find these cheap abandoned houses and negotiate all the bureaucratic stuff, which can be quite opaque for a. Non Japanese speaker.
No hidden taxes or fees. Also, my house wasn’t abandoned. When there are additional costs it’s only due to back paying unpaid taxes from the previous owners. Nothing is hidden, it’s all documented for the buyer
Very interested in the whole process of making your house/home according to your liking. How did you come about buying this house? This is something I also want to do but I have no idea where to start. Lastly, I'm a new subscriber as well as a follower in instagram. Cheers.
Wife & I are sitting here watching the initial tour video you uploaded. I am seriously wondering- it’s in awesome condition as is, all of it…including the shed out back…$6000?? Was the home stigmatised? I always heard that if someone died, especially tragically in a house, the price is considerably lower than average house prices, as the Japanese are incredibly superstitious. . I mean, you got everything included/left behind…did someone pass away in it? Regardless, good luck with the renovation.
In Canada we would wear hazmat suits and respiration equipment for this sort or work--for even less mold than what you see here. That stuff is a hazard to your health, as is the bleach you're using. We tend to use hydrogen peroxide.

It's crazy how much just changing the wall color upgraded the whole house. No longer a dark dungeon, it's now a livable home.

This appeared in my feed, love it, have binged all episodes, can't wait now for the next one, keep up the good work.

I like the suggestion for plants. I’m planning to add a moisture absorbing gravel under the house with a vapour barrier too :)

I got mast cell activation syndrome from long term mould exposure. Listen to this person, it's dangerous.

It’s looking good. So envious😊
I love all the updates you’re doing! Your house is looking awesome!
So rewarding to do DIY projects. Great overview of these tasks on Japanese house.
The primer looks like the kind of primer i had to put on villaboard cement sheet walls in the bathroom before painting on the waterproofing.
Another fabulous home cleaning video

@@im.mattguy cheers mate !! Also are you Australian as I can’t tell !?
Born in Australia but left a while back. People tell me I have a hybrid accent

They don’t have them in Japan thus my weird choice. I actually bought one online from US recently tho hahahaha

Apple cider vinegar and water is better on mold

They are cheap because japanese people believe that when someone dies in a house that the house might or will become haunted. (in short)
Shouldn’t you be wearing a mask when you’re using bleach? 😷
Bleach odor just consists of choride which cant be blocked by any regular mask. Just ventilate well.

No, the mask should be for the MOLD. Bleach doesn't kill mold, it only whitens it.

you can buy a humidifier to prevent any mold
And wear a mask cleaning
A dehumidifier you mean
You definitely want a dehumidifier not a humidifier. Mold and bacteria love humidity.
Humidifiers ADD moisture to the home and FEED THE MOLD.
