Matt, the aesthetic for this bathroom renovation is perfect. I'm so glad you lived with the space for a while (apart from short-term updates to improve livability); that space of time clearly gave you a deeper understanding of what you wanted from the room and what was possible. I'm also impressed by your willingness to try things and then adapt and make changes as the circumstances require. Buffing the stainless steel tub was a simple, economical as well as authentic solution. Wonderful choice. Now that the bathing space has such a serene, organic feel, it would be terrific if your garden view could be improved with perennial plants that would return seasonally (avoiding the crushing snow), and perhaps a sculpture or larger potted specimens (which could be brought indoors) to complete the aesthetic. The house is fabulous. I would not have made all the aesthetic choices you have (I'm old and the choice of unfinished look of oriented strand board mystifies me.); however, the house looks updated and refreshed but still embraces the original Japanese-ness of the house. Really beautiful work and I'm getting much enjoyment following your journey.
Oh Matt, you brave man. If I were to do it, 1/25 of the way, I will be on the phone looking for a professional to do it while I flip through Bathroom magazines and even if I try, I will be so stressed going " will it be water proof or not". I probably faint of anxiety! Kudos!
I am fascinated by your videos. I lived in Japan 20 years ago. Beautiful part of Japan where you live. I am learning so much from your videos. Thank you. Wenke. 7:36
Lovely job. I was a bit concerned when you said in an earlier video that you were thinking about taking the bath out completely. I’m so glad you didn’t. I loved my Japanese bath - while it was small, it was deep and I could sit with the water up to my neck. Now that I’m back in Aus I really hate my Aus bath. It’s long but too shallow and of course I don’t have the wet area with the floor drain so I can’t fill it right up without risking overflow and damage to my floor and the ceiling of the room downstairs. I wish I’d known about the stainless steel polisher when I lived in Japan. My tub would have come up a treat. I suspect that my ex landlord has replaced everything with a unit bathroom now as that’s what was done next door. Much preferred my tiled walls and floor but hinoki would have looked amazing.
Hi Matt, another Matt here! I love the way the bathroom turned out! I'll be doing that in my Edo period Akiya later this year and I got some ideas from this! Hopefully we can hook up at some point once we move there full time later this year. Great content man, keep it up, and happy new year!
I love it. I had a new wet room put in about 3 years ago which has the same wall boards you have and they are so easy to clean and so durable. They still look like new. I also love, love, love having wood in my home, I just adore the look and feel of it. They look so good together and the flooring and bath cover just complete it. I love clean, simple designs using beautiful materials. I know I'm gushing here but I really do love the look of it. Well done.❤❤❤
If you run the Japanese equivalent of blue painter's tape as a boundary on either side of the corner to be siliconed, your finished line will be cleaner looking after you smooth it out with a wet finger and then remove the tape.
I'm a Japanese female DIYer in Hawaii, please show more DIY's! Not many show the cost or how to renovate. I would like a video how to build a new wall, fix rotted external walls and internal water damaged walls, or how to cosmetically make a wall look new again. If building a new wall, what are the permit requirements... or any requirements to do construction. Kitchen reno's, tatami wall replacements, subfloor replacements (is it similar to US?), window replacements.... Where to get DIY material generally? These are things I am thinking about. I'm so grateful for your channel!
Matt, I recently discovered your videos, and I love them. Thank you for sharing your journey in Japan. Your shower room looks beautiful. I hope you are enjoying your renovated chill space. Do you think you will ever share more about the local business in your area? I would love to hear their stories and see some of their menu items or products.
Man, this requires a lot of time, patience and talent. You've got all of that and it looks fantastic. I have zero of that, so the cost for the labour would be perfectly fine. 😃
Congratulations and you are making us jealous with your thoughtful and respectful restorations. I am sure that bathroom too many hours but the results are amazing. 😎🤓
Thank you so much for this video. I am remodeling an old house in the Matsudo area and the bathroom plans have eluded me. These are some great ideas to keep the price down and work with the space.
Thank you so much! Appreciate the comment! I’ve been able to think through the design a little more than before after spending the time living here and create my ultimate space :)
Matt, your bathroom turned out fantastic! I wish I had a beautiful bathroom like yours when I was in Japan - had a plastic one, but at least it was new. (I’m a great fan of traditional Japanese architecture too.) 🙂
This is amazing! Outstanding work, it turned out beautiful! I don't know much about carpentry, but I'd feel safer using screws for that ceiling hinoki. I'm not sure if nails will be good enough over time.
It’s very worth it! I got a few quotes but had trouble finding a company could do something a little different to the standard and the unit bathroom is pretty expensive. I’m glad I went with hinoki and time will tell if it was a good choice :)
Yeahi finally a new video 😃 your content has something therapeutic to it Matt. I'm just a bit worried that we'll come to the point, when your house is completely finished and there won't be anything more to renovate. Maybe you need to buy a second house in the future 😂
Great job! My only question though is how does the water drain considering you didn’t pitch the shower area. Self leveling concrete made the surface flat and some amount of water must be staying on the floor for a pretty long time until it gets evaporated… please correct me if I’m wrong
Thank you! It was a light skin coat to cover the tiles over the already very fallen surface. I would have needed to add a lot more concrete to bring the level up and flatten it out
@ then it should work just fine! I just moved to Japan a few months ago. Now looking to buy a house, still thinking about whether I should consider buying a brand new one or “used house” (exclusively Japanese term lol). A bit concerned about earthquake resistance though. Have you tried to get a quote from any professional company to reinforce or retrofit your house?
I haven’t had any cost for it. I would probably talk with a builder and look for the standards then do it myself. If you can afford a new one, go for that. Makes a lot of sense in many ways
I think that the hinoki and the vinyl mesh really well. You did a great job putting it all together! I am surprised that you went with wood grain though since you covered up a fair amount of it with white paint in other areas of the house.
The new bathroom seems very calming and, in a very cold environment, you will be happy not to have to step on icy cold stone flooring or accidentally have your bum touch the freezing cold tiles that were on the walls. On a cold morning, that can be such an abrupt (and humorously unexpected) wakeup! lol Although, those features are very pleasant to keep things cool in summer. I don't know how well the linoleum will hold up in terms of *not* allowing water underneath it, I do remember from childhood (it was in our kitchen), it is much softer to walk on on and warmer than natural tiles. The new drain cover was just beautiful. I'm sorry it didn't fit well. I hope you can find another place to use it in your home because it's quite aesthetically beautiful. You are so patient to do all these things yourself. It's honestly quite amazing that you have this skillset. I don't think I could even build a dog house. lol
Thanks for the comment! That’s exactly right about the warmer feel. There certainly are other flooring options but I feel this one works best for now. I am a little skeptical about the waterproof level as well but it should be fine. It’s a common product in Japan for bathroom floors and made in Japan. If it doesn’t work out for whatever reason it wouldn’t been too difficult to change. As for the DIY skillset, I would say that I’m a little out of my comfort zone too! But I think it’s important to learn new skills and level up. My way of thinking has become that if something doesn’t work out I can always do it again or adjust things. But if I don’t give it a try, I won’t grow!
This turned out fantastic! You put so much precision work into it! I love the look. I stayed in a hotel in Kyoto where the shower room was similarly styled with hinoki (sp?) wood. It smelled so good I never wanted to leave. It had a raised wood floor, too, which I really liked because the wood is smooth and soft underfoot. Something to consider if the vinyl doesn’t hold up. Great job!
Hi Matt, I have just found your channel. Wow! you bought a house for $6000 is that very unusual or are there plenty of houses all over Japan that you can buy cheap property for around $6000. I understand you bought it in Niigata area, Are the houses around there cheap in general? Interested in your thoughts Regards Mark

Thanks for the comment. Not entirely sure what you’re referring to but I’ll expand on some of what I did. During the first renovation I was able to check the floor conditions. For this renovation, after removing the paint and silicon I opened up those previous cracks which made the floor not water proof. Again, dried it out and sealed it off. I used the products as recommended in Japan. This is my home bathroom renovation and what I did to get the end result.
