Your father taught you an impressive set of practical life skills. Kudos to him for taking the time to teach you and kudos to you for being willing to learn, even though you probably didn't want to as a teenager (if you were anything like me lol). It looks like you did a really nice, thorough job. I'm surprised by how good that gray goes with the brick and trim.
I’m very grateful to have acquired some of the skills. Even fixing cars and all that stuff was part of growing up. Everything comes together nicely. I think part of it is that it works well in Japan. It suits the surroundings
Thank you! I’ve done it way too many times 😂 I also checked initially how the paint was flicking and it was fine. It’s really good paint I would recommend!
As an Architect I think the colour is perfect for your house BTW there’s no law to say the AC units can’t also be painted the same wall colour They stand out like “eyes” Happy DIY , Nick
Thanks, appreciate it! AC units are almost always this color as they get hot from the sun and need to work harder to cool. The lighter color deflects the heat better. It’s quite common to cover them with something such at a type of slatted box or lattice for air flow and avoid direct sunlight rather than paint them. It’s on the list :)
Starting watching this series from the beginning and I just love how you're doing a Japanese style but with your own twist of who you are! This is definitely what I would have done! Absolutely stunning and wonderful job! I'll be sad when I'm all caught up on your videos and will continue to watch! 😅 you're making me want to move to the countryside of Japan! Much love from California!!!! 🫰🏽
Thanks for the pro-tip on the status/quality of the brushes, rollers and painting accessories in Japan. It's funny but I always found it odd that this was an area that Japan, being so high quality, missed on quality but I just wrote it off to being super OCD on finishing work I did on my projects. The plan to build a home in Japan has yet another list of items that must get shipped from abroad. At this rate it might be a container load just to save on shipping. Insulation takes up a lot of space. 😉
I love watching your videos. Great work. New color suits your home nicely. Great inspiration. I lived in Niigata for one year, Tokyo another year. I’ve considered moving back because I enjoyed my life there. I’m looking forward to more of your videos.
I love the new color of your home! It looks amazing! Great job! You just work so hard all the time. I enjoy watching your videos so much! Thanks for sharing your life with us. ❤
I just recently discovered your channel and have caught up with the transformation of your house! Great videos! I liked that you mentioned your neighbors and that they liked the colour too lol I was going to ask questions in the comments section of the other videos but mostly they'd been asked already, your Dad must be so proud! Thanks for sharing!
You definitely aren’t afraid of heights! It looks really nice.. GREAT job! Do you plan on spending the winter in your area? Snow vlogs are my favorite!!!!
Great color choice. Old saying in America “caulk and paint, will make it what it ain’t.” People underestimate the power of paint. If you get a moment please explain your visa situation/ability to be there long term. I’m married in Vietnam, just finished a glorious home build here with my wife. I’m am always curious how westerners find ways of staying included countries without long term visas, you married to a Japanese? Thanks
The new colour is beautiful. Let me know if you need some new brushes from OZ.😊 This was the least boring video of " watching paint dry." Fantastic job.
I just started watching your videos and I feel so motivated by you and your videos and for the first time I also felt even excited to watch someones videos. You're awesome!
A good lick of paint can do wonders on a house. Looks good and It wouldn't have come to mind, the color scheme works very nicely on your home. Then again I'm an electrician by original trade not a builder/painter so its outside my wheelhouse. Also, I'd love to see the view you have as a webcam (sounds silly I know but I often have a webcam on my secondary screen to see more interesting views then the dilapidated building outside that soon will get torn down.
I used to have a Benjamin Moore store in Toronto for 20 years. My favourite colours for your house are the ones on the right. For more colour the top one and more muted the bottom! Love your house!
Still hard to believe only 6k home cost. Look at my monthly payments, im basically paying for your house every month. If i can figure out a way to stay in japan longer than 90 days at a time, i think i would buy the same type of home and just have some fun with it. Really enjoying all your content. Do you know if Japan has any high networth visa?
Thank you for sharing. Nice work. You made it look easy. That tall ladder is certainly indispensable. One question: does this paint work well with traditional earth walls of a traditional Japanese house?
Thanks appreciate it! If you’re referring to shikkui walls, which are breathable, then it most likely wouldn’t work to keep the same ability. There are paints for that though, I used it on my walls as recommended by the paint specialist
That brand of pressure washer.. I have very good of experiences with that brand. I have one of their steamers. As a renter in Aus I have found it to be the tool to clean walls with, and for keeping the bathroom sterile without resorting too regular bleachings. Which I love as bleach kinda messes me up for days afterwards. One of the best investments of my life for house hold care. I had one previous that was good enough and ex stole from me, hence me going for that brand again.
Wow...looks incredible Matt You mention Australia for supplies...it's a huge DIY country...Sikka products are the best...The colours you chose are also popular colours in Oz too...Do you travel to Australia to get supplies? 😊👍🙏🏼
Hi, Matt! Finally found the perfect video for my diy reno in our japanese house. I've been looking for exterior wall painting products, so scared to start the project because I don't know what kind of material works. where can I buy these paints from? looked on google but it doesn't show where to order.
Wow nice work Matt.I was curious on what selection of brushes and paint they had over there because I never see a paint show in Japan.I myself painted professionally for a living residential new and remodel homes.I no longer paint for a living but I do take side jobs occasionally to keep up my skill. So hmmm lol maybe I can move to Japan and open a paint store that has our type brushes and able to mix paint??Here in the states you pick your base, your color, get it mixed and your off to the races.
Looks great! Agreed. Good equipment is everything. Top tier paint, too. Applied properly with proper prep means you do not have to repaint as frequently--saving on both time and money. Too bad your neighbour (in black) didn't paint his lower half as well. It stands out as half-done, especially now that yours accents it.
Funny you should mention the neighbor house. That’s a newer house and very much the current trend in Japan - to have a variety of finishes. I like it to some extent but probably too many finishes and colors for me. Creating something that works with current trends and traditional elements has been a fun creative challenge
@@im.mattguy Interesting to learn that's a current trend. Objectively, I don't see it lasting. First, the bottom half being the more common white you see everywhere looks unfinished. Second, it will show the filth of weather and wear much sooner. Fine when it's fresh, I suppose. But not what I would want. Perhaps it's in keeping with the kitchen cabinet trend in the West to have different coloured tops and bottoms. Design-wise there are many considerations for that to work successfully in both situations.

Great job! You didn’t take off the air condition units in the front to paint? Was it too much hassle?
That paint job looked awesome! I assume the silica-based paint does well in the snow, is that why its popular? Also, do you think the house remodeling supplies business is a niche worth exploring in Japan?
Yep, that’s correct. They also advertise a lot about the research they’ve put into it for benefits like UV protection and longevity. With 2 coats they offer a 15 year guarantee. DIY culture in Japan isn’t very popular. A lot of home improvement stuff is very basically and practical. It’s left to the professionals probably because of time constraints with long work hours, cost, and need vs want. It’s a good idea but I think the market is slim for now…
Looks good, I love the colour 😊 I’m thinking of painting my own house too. I saw on a Japanese carpenters channel that older houses that use direct attached siding, it can be a problem if you paint it due to moisture getting trapped in the siding I’m not sure if it was translation error or not.
Gorgeous colours! Blue/Green with an undertone of grey? At least that is how I read it in the video. I'm kind of mad now - I just spent 15,500 dollars on painting my house. The lazy so and sos started on August 12th and are still not quite finished and it does not look as nice as yours. I should have done my homework before I hired them - they did no prep work at all and are scamming me on the quality of the paint. When you live long enough, you learn all sorts of lessons, for sure.
Your father taught you an impressive set of practical life skills. Kudos to him for taking the time to teach you and kudos to you for being willing to learn, even though you probably didn't want to as a teenager (if you were anything like me lol).

Thank you so much!!
YES MATT IS DIY EXPERT
The parking spot preparation work and painting were fun to watch. Your home is looking great. Thanks for sharing.
Wow good job I C you have done this a couple of hundred times without a drop cloth & masking really impressed
Thank you! I’ve done it way too many times 😂 I also checked initially how the paint was flicking and it was fine. It’s really good paint I would recommend!
Paint is so transformative! Wow!! I think it looks great with the tile on the front.
I like the new color.. makes the warm light coming from inside look more cosy and inviting.
The new color would not my choice,I loved the color it had before ,but the most important is that you love the new color 😃
Why mention you’re not a fan of the color? Why not not paint your house that color and pay a compliment. People are so self-centered.

@@im.mattguy Since it gets very cold and snowy there, I was wondering how effective the AC/heatpumps are at heating during winter.
Please do a whole house tour update. ❤ Thank you for sharing your journey the new color looks great.
It looks great, especially when the sun is setting and you have the lights on. The warm yellow lighting really complements this color scheme!

Nice Matt, it looks very good. My dad and grandfather were also painters so I know those sorts of hereditary skills.
It’s beautiful. Don’t listen to these people who think they have standing to criticize the color.

Love the new color, makes it really standout,
Thanks! It should look great in winter against the snow
I don’t think it makes it standout, it stood out before. I think it makes it look more blended in with the neighbourhood now.
Another fabulous home video indeed looking great as always God bless
