Modern Holley EFI on an old Bronco 2. Increases power & drivability and pays for itself with MPG's!

  • This 1984 Bronco II was put out to pasture and forgotten about.
But, I rescued it and in a previous video gave it a new life with a carburetor swap. Ditching the antiquated EFI. Holley saw that video and wanted to prove that upgrading to a modern EFI is just as easy as reverting backwards to a carburetor.
Today, we install a Holley Sniper EFI 2300 for under $1400. Which seems like a lot of money until you add up the cost of a DuraSpark distributor, carburetor, and ignition module. For just about the same money, you can have drivability, tunability and fuel economy at your fingertips. An added bonus is the computer timing control will increase power and efficiency across the board. We’re betting we nearly double the fuel efficiency of the Bronco, paying for the upgrade within a few years.

I know its a couple of years late, but thought I'd chime in about the 02 sensor and cat. If you're still running the computer, I would think you'd still want those parts. Walker sells a free flow cat which has always worked great on my vehicles, and you can always weld a 02 bung anywhere in the pipe before the cat. I had a 86 B2, I think the 02 bung was on the cat, cant remember. Had a Mountain Driveline rear drive line with full size Bronco U joints, 6" Skyjacker Class ll lift, welded 7.5" rear diff, and Rancho 9000 shocks with on board air. Was a beast!!! Oh yeah, I also redid the entire cooling system, deleted the clutch fan and installed a FF-Dynamics 3800 cfm electric fan. This was my best upgrade because it not only restored my power from the added weight and oversized tires, but I had more power and torque than stock. My mpg was somewhere in the 20s. I depended on this rig with my life, very very dependable, even at 308,000 miles.
If you still have this rig, check out some of the vendors I mentioned, they were very affordable and reliable. I really do like how you're going about restoring this B2, these things are literally little tractors that can go anywhere.....
EDIT - LOL, right after I wrote this, I watched how you added the straight pipe with the 02 bung! Friggen awesome!!

The 2.8L Cologne V-6 is a Ford of Germany engine that is actually an American design dating to the late 50's/early 60's as an industrial engine. Initially a V4 layout engine, it morphed into a V6 layout because of larger Ford of Germany vehicles being produced. It's initial introduction to the U.S. market was in the 1972 Lincoln-Mercury imported Capri in a 2600cc V6 size(with siamesed exhaust ports alluding to it's V4 architecture). In 1974 the V6 was enlarged to 2800cc with individual exhaust ports for each cylinder exhaust valve for the American market.

    • @michaelnotigan7796

I had an 84 Bronco II, purchased in 85. The engine was the 2.8 V6, German-Cologne factory motor. 2 barrel, Ford EEC IV computer controlled feedback carb. Solid lifter cam which does require periodic valve clearance checks. That all went out the window in 86 when they introduced the 2.9 V6 with EFI and hydraulic lifters. My problem spots on that engine was a constantly clogged EGR valve and a propensity of the motor stalling out everytime it was damp outside. This was caused by dampness buildup within the ford distributor. They were aware of this and their solution was a small plastic umbrella cap mounted on top of, and outside, on the distributor cap. She was a nice little off road trail rider.

Thanks Ray! My TBSS is coming soon, I have an aluminum radiator for it and I'd like to address a persistent exhaust leak though the cheap long tube headers. Then I'm planning on putting my fox body on a trailer and using the TBSS to tow it to the track in an attempt to run low 12's with both.
The 4.2 is a love or hate engine. Luckily they are cheap and can be found at nearly every salvage yard. Knowing that it's cheaper to replace than rebuild them, I would definitely swap it with a known good engine if you run into issues.
Richard Holdener and Hot Rod Garage both just made 420hp with a small turbo, a set of injectors and HPTuners. They are planning on a 600hp build with headwork and a cam.

I took a '96 4.9L distributor and hollowed out cyl1 spark plug wire hole and epoxied a hall sensor in and a magnet on the rotor. EFI'd a '78! (next is a 36-1 wheel up front using a '96 harmonic)
Annnnnnnnnddddd! Used a Wasted Spark Coil from a Chrysler Mini Van! totally ditch the distributor idea and it now only drives the oil pump and sensors.
Can the Holley Sniper do a similar thing? If I remember right, needed a cyl1 sensor for Cam Sync...

    • @TheFracturedRooster
      @TheFracturedRooster  3 года назад +1

That's pretty slick. Once you understand the basics it's pretty easy to fab crank triggers and sensors.
I think the holley will work in your situation. But you'd probably also need a coil driver to amplify the signal.

    • @zarkeh3013

@@TheFracturedRooster You probably has a VR (Variable Reluctance) thingie and needs the amplifier/signal conditioner, aka Coil Driver. Another question if I may. What was your mileage with the Sniper? The 3.4 S-10 (bigger version of the 2.8) i'm getting about 15-16mpg with the 91 EFI system. I'm not looking specifically for an improvement, just not a loss. There's a guy on S-10 forum that did this swap and his fuel economy never got over 10mpg. That's worse than my truck got with the factory carburetor. Dude is pretty smart on cars, so he was stumped. I think his system has a bad 02 sensor or something and he's getting the wrong readings to the unit. But as much as this costs, I'm really wanting to check boxes. Thank you!!
