If you REALLY want to feel afraid of the giant bugs, there's an excerpt about an inquisitor who has spent multiple centuries studying the Tyranids. In his notes, he theorizes that the current swarms invading the galaxy may possibly be just the forward scouts/vanguard of an even larger invasion force, and that "There may, in fact, be more hive fleets than there are worlds."
This is right before he looks over at his personal laspistol, which promises him an easy escape from this horrifying situation.

Harlequins in addition to guarding the black library also travel between all eldar civilizations and perform plays to remind the eldar of the fall of their civilization. They reenact the tale of the birth of Slaanesh to constantly remind their people of what happened so that it won't happen again. Members of a Troupe play the part of different roles within the story. As well they are the only group of eldar that aren't consumed by Slaanesh as their laughing god protects them from Slaanesh.

There is one new playable faction that came out since Bricky made this video. The League of Votann. They are a ofshoot of humanity from back during the golden age of technology. They are in the center of the galaxy and nowadays look like dwarfs. They are not in alliance with the imperium and are governed by artificial intelligence. They are also clones produced by these ai to fit whatever need they have. Over thousands of years most of these ai have become a bit crazy though.
Then there is also a new playable subfaction for the eldar called the ynnari. They are a group that tries to revive their god of death who they hope is able to kill Slaanesh. Every eldar can join them no matter their previous faction(there are other factions that Bricky didn't mentions as they aren't playable on tabletop, for example the Exodites who are basically hippies that live on jungle worlds and ride dinosaur like creature) and they also played a key part in the revival of the primarch Robute Guilleman.

Gotta say Bricky is right about Warhammer having a little bit of everything, there are action adventure, crime thrillers, spy and espionage, and war novels being published, the fandom of the lore is almost as big as the fandom of the actual table top if not bigger.
40K could also definitely pull of a romance novel if they were looking to broaden their horizons, I mean shit I'd read a book about a Guardsman falling in love with a sister of battle as they are relentlessly assaulted by some cosmic horror.
Also Ephrael Stern and Kyganil are a great example of human/eldar cooperation
And recently GW has been pushing the lore into a more "unified" thing, the Eldar and Humanity are starting to get along with each other more, and are fighting less, even some of the Drukhari are beginning to seek redemption for their depravity and even the necrons decided to help out humanity with Trazyn trying to prevent the fall of Cadia.

Ork manifestation is both a benefit and a detriment
One time a group of Orks were being chased by an Imperium Knight Mech
Because the mech was red, the Orks collectively assumed it would go fast
To the surprise of the pilots of the mech, it went WAY faster than it's supposed to, and they caught up and slaughtered the Orks

If you're interested in getting into the tabletop, I recommend his video, "what's the best warhammer 40k army to start with." It's a redo of this one, but focusing more on the hobby and gaming side: who is the cheapest, easiest to build/paint, playstyles, etc.
The Poorhammer podcast is also a very good source for that kind of stuff, but might be less of audience for reactions to their videos. If you're serious about wanting to start an army, I especially recommend "what kind of player are you?"
I started with orks, because I am SUPER-Timmy: I don't care as much about the deep strategy side of things; I just want to show off my models, see the other person's awesome models, charge them at each other, and see who survives. And I really like the color green and the junkyard aesthetic.

What Bricky said about how Ork mechanics work in the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game is mostly true. In my own experience, I have found Orks to be powerful, with competitive options in most editions of the tabletop game- especially in 9th and 10th edition. You can play whacky and care-free with an Ork army as the leg doppelganger discusses in his lore video, but you can also make the game's RNG your b*tch by throwing so many dice that entropy becomes your real weapon.

My favorite part of the orks is not an Ork, but a human: Sebastian Yarrick. He is a commisar of the Imperium that dedicated his whole life to fighting Orks, even facing the Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, arguably one of the biggest and strongest Ork in the galaxy. Orks love Yarrick because he "fights like an Ork". He's so good at killing Orks that the Orks started spreading rumors that "whoever faces him in battle dies" and, due to the Ork's imagination power to alter reality, that became real (this doesn't apply to Ghaz, the only ork that survived fighting him). After the fight with Ghaz, he got one of his eyes replaced with an artificial one, and the Ork started spreading a rumor that his artificial eye can shoot laser from it, and it actually started happening due to their imagination. Unluckily, Yarrick was killed by Angron, the Primarch of the World Eater, off screen, but i really liked that Ghaz turned his WHAAAA around to go the Eye of Terror to kill Angron because "he killed a humie that i liked"

Harlequins are more than just clowns. They are storytellers. They are keepers of history. Their main play is about the fall of the Eldar race. It shows why things are as they are. Also, they are followers of the philosophy that "all is the art and the world is the scene". It's visible in the way they fight - every attack, punch, or shot is made to be packed with extra meanings and theatrics. Kill can be a counterpoint to words of the poem recited by Harlequin, the massacred battlefield be a scene and background for a dance, and sounds of battle can be actually used by them as pieces of music. And then is Solitaire - the story of fall needs one actor to play She-Who-Thirst, Slaanesh. And this is work for Solitaire. That means they need to be in constant danger of summoning actual Slaaneshi daemons. They need their mind to be so trained and attuned they start to repeal warp, not dissimilar to human Blanks. That means they are feared by other Eldars and often on the outskirts of their society. But also their skills are much higher than any other Harlequin - sometimes compared to the level of humanity's Primarchs.

      @@ti8ick I love them❤️ As a nature-lover I have to.
They are not just a “race” but more like the “self-defense thorns” of an entire ecosystem. It’s an ecosystem that that is collapsible down to a single spore. This spore contains multiple templates, diversifying and complexifying itself onto various “base” physical forms as it grows and integrates into the environment. Industrial pollution is one of the ork fungus’ favorite foods at a cellular level. Breaking down complex chemical pollutants and bringing dead worlds to life is an ork specialty. The ork fungus integrates its own pre-planned food web into and alongside whatever ecosystem it finds itself in, down to a cellular level. Most often allowing a far greater abundance and variety of flora and fauna wherever it takes hold.

Actually more intelligent Orks can be bad for their health. As an example, once there was a bunch of orks that needed to be outside their starship, so they went outside without space suits. Their ignorance of needing space suits stopped them from dying... but then they ran into some orks outside the ship too but these orks were inside space suits. The ones inside the suits asked the orks not having them how they were still alive and not killed by the vacuum of space. The orks without suits suddenly realized they should be dead... so all the Orks without suits instantly died.
There's also an Ork warboss who when trying to join a Waaarghh! Got on his ship to go to that planet, but instead ended up above the same planet he just left... and in the past. So he went back down to the planet and killed his past self so he could get two copies of his favorite gun. Because he doesn't understand that killing your past self kills your present self, he's still alive but if he ever figures it out... well, he'll literally just fall over dead.
Oh, and then there's the biggest ork in the galaxy. He actually had his head cut off and pur on top of a Robot body which made him even bigger... does his robot body have life support for his head... probably not.

Tau player for over 15 years here, I initially picked them because they were the total opposite of what my brother was playing: he played Black Templars (aka choppy humans) so I wanted shooty aliens. The fact they used battlesuits is just what pushed me over the edge towards choosing them over Eldar. As for lore what I like about them is how naive and hopeful they are that the various factions in 40k would ever give peace a chance. There's plenty of stories that follow a theme of 'Tau try to foster diplomatic relations with a race and it completely bites them in the ass' like the time they sent a couple dozen diplomats on an exchange with the Drukhari, only to discover their entire delegation had been tortured and turned into monstrous abominations by the Drukhari. On top of that they are also one of the smallest factions of 40k to the point where if the imperium had a mind to, they could probably wipe out all Tau in short order. That the Tau are this feeble candlelight of optimism in such a setting as warhammer 40k is what adds to the grimdark nature of the setting imo.
tl;dr I like big bots and I cannot lie.

Orks project a latent psychic field that gets stronger the more of them gather at one place. And it's this psychic field that makes them manifest their imagination that their contraptions work, that da red ones go fasta, that things painted blue are more lucky, and so on.
And about the mushroom thing: Orks are constantly shedding spores wherever they go. Those spores grow in shady spots into mini orks and grots which then keep growing and banding together. That's also the reason why orks are so hard to get rid of, because their spores are basically everwhere.
And they're fighting each other because they just like foight'n more than anything else; so, if there's no-one else to fight, they just fight amongst themselves.

Most wars with Orks are small scale and more of an annoyance to the imperium but when a whaaaagh happens it usually results in the loss of multiple worlds/systems and the only really effective way of stopping it is to kill the warboss leading the whaaaagh which will result in the energy dissipating and the hoard will start squabbling and fighting amongst themselves

Their visual style is really sleek and they stand out as a faction that isn't as stupid in how they operate compared to the more obvious satires. They are one of the few factions to actually use camo, and they use lots of drones to minimise casualties, so they feel very modern.
Their relative xenophilia, clean look, upbeat attitude, and their thematic role as the dynamic rising star of the galaxy makes them more obvious good guys in the setting, so GW has been trying to make them evil to bring them in line with other factions. However I think they work best being forward thinking, not trapped in stagnation, and not outright genocidal. It provides a nice contrast that highlights how bad the rest of the setting is.
People hate them usually because tau mostly only care about shooting, which limits how much of the game they take part in, and which doesn't feel as fun to play against. However it's nowhere near as bad as people say and at the moment they're pretty balanced

Hey, thank you for sharing in this, enjoying it and adding so much to the community already! :) Again, I got into this through the two rules/lore/wargear books from the 2nd edition of 40k, arounnnd '97 or so. These were a great start point, so the lore was perhaps easier to get a basic grasp of... once you had those. Beyond that, each army book or codex would flesh out lore, and the hobby magazine White Dwarf would add a bit of everything. Now the lore's grown so much along with the online presence, but it's good to see things click with videos like this. :)
When I was new to 40k, the lore was kind of intentionally vague, which was played up as a theme. Don't know how to pronounce a name? So what? There's probably a bunch of planets whose people say it like you thought, haha. The setting has an ancient past with partly forgotten things, with propaganda, and all sorts of unreliable narrators, so even if this is an outdated view, you can both delve into the lore and not worry much, and it's a good spirit! :D
I saw a meme of one 40k fan asking if something is canon, the other doesn't even know, and they both laugh, haha. I love that it may still be true, but with things like the Index Astartes articles, and maybe the Horus Heresy novels most of all, people could buy and know answers to the ancient background mysteries, which can place way more emphasis on canon. I like to delve into it but stay chilled out, despite my rambling haha.
Looking forward to more, and best wishes!
P.S. I could say loads on Necrons - and the poor Tau haha - but suffice to say they were both races added later in establishing things, late 90s, early 2000s. The Necrons started with the basic warriors, the lord with his big hat, and some scarabs lol. They were hinted at as ancient, but all that War in Heaven lore came later. Still, they never miss a chance to connect different races, as you see :)

I don't play tabletop, but I like Tau, specifically because they help me with the suspension of disbelief. W40k has a lot of not very futuristic designs, from fighting with swords and axes, to WW1 style tanks, to WW2 style battle tactics, and so on. Having Tau as this genuinely futuristic that somehow is true to how a spacefaring civilization would look and fight, and then having them completely wreck anyone who uses obsolete technology by choice, makes the universe seem more real and logical to me, and makes it easier to accept the other less logical stuff.

As someone who has been a part of the Warhammer community for over three years now, I can say that the community will welcome you no matter what faction you like the most or decide to collect. The lore is so vast that it may take a while to decide on one. For me I knew I liked Space Marines and Melee combat so I decided to go with the Space wolves and I don't regret it. In three years I went for enjoying the lore and wanting to learn the tabletop to becoming a commission painter and it's always a fun time seeing new people get into the universe in some way. Pick a faction YOU love for whatever reason, you may get some detractors but no one will bash on you for picking a certain faction (though Tau will have people looking at you with the side eye 🤣) whatever faction you end up liking you'll have support from the community and most likely really cool models to chose from. Drukhari is pretty old in their range last I heard, and in the last round of tournaments, they were tied with my second army (Custodes) for dead last in win rate. None of that is to say they aren't a great faction, and they're apparently a ton of fun if you like that fast glass canon playstyle and very kitbashable, it's just an uphill battle if you're new.

The original Necron lore (which I actually prefer) was that the Necrons were still s laves to the C'Tan (albeit some of the higher-up Necrons still retained some level of individual identity and independent thought), and the C'Tan were kind of like the material, realspace equivalent to or antithesis of the Chaos Gods, who are purely Warp-based psychic entitities, and their goal was to exterminate all life in the galaxy in a great Red Harvest (sort of like mechanical counterparts to the purely biological Tyrranids) and also cut the Materium (aka realspace) off from the Immaterium (aka Warp) finally snd permanently by constructing pylons (this was what allowed Cadia to survive so long even though it was right near the mouth of the Eye of Terror). This was when Necrons were still a newly-introduced faction in 40k, like the Tau.

I feel T'au didn't quite get the overview they deserve here - they are grim and have always been that way. They practice eugenics on a societal level and the caste you're born into determines your entire life. If you're Fire Caste you're trained to be a soldier from birth and can only 'retire' by surviving long enough to become a Commander. The Ethereal Caste may or may not use pheromones/mind control to keep their place as dictators, and while they actively want other species to join them they don't take no for an answer. Take the Vespids for example: they were a species of wasp aliens who had a hive mind. The T'au completely enslaved the species by hijacking their hive structure to place themselves at the top. Vespids are now used for dangerous mining and as disposable skirmishers. Their other main member species, the Kroot, eat dead enemies.

  • @NewTypeDilemma01
    @NewTypeDilemma01 3 месяца назад +1

The Harlequins were some of the only xenos back in the day that could come and go on Terra as they pleased, because they basically served as messengers to the Emperor of Mankind on behalf of the Aeldari prior to the Horus Heresy.
When I first was introduced to the setting in 2004, Tau became my main faction. In terms of accuracy, your basic Fire Warrior is on par with a basic Space Marine, but has god-awful melee ability. Back then, the only other alien races under the Tau you could field were Kroot (which had better melee ability but were inferior in other aspects) and Vespids (which were basically glass skirmishers). You could field the Ethereals, but opponents tend to gun for them first to apply the "Price of Failure" debuff to all Tau (to my recollection, it _forced_ all Tau to take a Leadership roll to avoid retreating _every_ turn), so almost no Tau player would ever put an Ethereal on the field. In the current Edition, Ethereals are a bit more practical, but still outshone by other units.
The Tau Empire, in real life, were added to the setting circa 2000 in an effort to add some light to the depressing grimdark setting of 40k. Old school fans did not take kindly to this, so numerous spinoff titles and side material have added things to make Tau considerably more gray in morality. This includes certain suggestions that they rely on hypnosis to ensure loyalty or the suggestion that they sterilize the population of the worlds they annex. By and large, the fluff paints the average citizen of the Tau Empire legitimately buying into the concept of the Greater Good - in a less grimdark setting, they might already have an empire spanning the entire galaxy, ruled in a fair and meritocratic manner. In this setting, given their relative naivete, the Tau are doomed to be the butt of a thousand jokes.
So, anyone that's not Chaos or the Drukhari is some shade of gray on the moral spectrum.
The Craftworld Eldar are manipulative by necessity to keep their species alive and basically see humans as far below them as humans see your average rat. The Imperium is darker on the shade of gray because of the lack of diplomacy except for extremely unusual scenarios. The Tyranids and Orks don't even exist on the scale because they are biologically hardwired with an entirely unconventional moral code (Tyranids eat, and Orks fight because that's literally what they were made to do). Really, Tau, Craftworld Eldar, and the Imperium are only "good" by virtue of everything else trying to kill them all.

  • @brainspider
    @brainspider 2 месяца назад +1

The best thing about Orks is that they are not evil, just love a good fight. They are more a force of nature. Plus all Orks are highly psychic, which is why their things work through belief. Red vehicles go faster coz 1 painted red win a race qnd now other orks believe that too.
My favourite piece of 40k lore is when a imperial guardsman lost his gun, picked up a ork gun and it did nothing as it had no ammo. Then a ork came along, killed him, took the gun and it fired for him as if it did have ammo.

The original necron lore was pretty different to the current lore, originally the necrons never rebelled against the c'tan, what happened is one of the c'tan known as the deceiver convinced the other ctans to start feasting on each other so they all started infighting till there was only 4 left, at that point a tear from the warp happened and these creatures called the enslavers came out and started eating what little sentient life was left in the galaxy, the remaining ctan decided that because the galaxy was basically lifeless it was best to go into a long slumber and wait for the galaxy to repopulate at which point they would awaken again and start feasting on a now repopulated galaxy. You could also use 2 of them as models in the game, the deceiver and the nightbringer and they were massively overpowered in the game, in the current game you can use c'tan shards which aren't as strong but still pretty strong. How can you be afraid of fuzzy moths? They're so adorable! Spiders I will agree with though.

If an Ork is prevented from fighting, such as being a prisoner. They will eventually die. Fighting is bred into them at a genetic level. As an Ork fights and rises in the Ork ranks, they do become more intelligent. Think of it as they gained a level in an RPG. More genetic traits are unlocked.

You don't necessarily need to choose based on the lore. You could just have a look at the ranges and see which models you like the look of, I chose my first army because I liked the cover of their codex (army rule book), Eldar 3rd edition.

The tyranids are the Legends of this Universe, nothing has stopped them yet. Or if they were stopped it was a small fleet and the defenders were completely decimated

You should watch Bricky video of warhammer 40k timeline for more context.

One thing to note is that a new faction has been released since Bricky made these videos. Leagues of Votann. Grim Dark space dwarves.

Unfortunately there is still one faction missing because it was "re"-released after Bricky's video, the "leagues of votann"

Someone probably already corrected this, but the xenos arent chaos aligned. In fact, pratically all xeno races are against chaos in some way.
Eldar, Orks and Necrons are more or less imune to chaos corruption (or at least WAY more resistent to It then humans). Tau pratically ignore the existence of chaos.

If the *Orkz* were smarter, their power of “imagination” would not work. It works because they believe for reals that it works.

Note on the Tau: GW doesn't seem to be sure what to do with them, their lore is a hot mess right now. FTL travel? Reconned. Having a more naive-positive species in a universe that is fucked? That's what they were. Until GW (probably to carve in to a *certain* group tried to make them evil. They failed to make it good though)
What I like is the Idea of Prosperity and Positivity in the Universe that's filled to the brim with hate, treachery and war. They were unique in their nativity. And then, stuff like Phil Kelly's Farsight books happened.
    We don't talk about those.
