I recommend PMJ feat Haley Reinhart cover of Radiohead’s, “Creep”. Any PMJ, with any singer, is worth your attention. Many call it vintage jazz, but for me all good jazz is timeless.
The Reinhart cover of Creep is one of the best singing I've ever heard to be honest.
@@klantic2 yes... but not just the singing. the band, the environment, her expression and her movements make it the best overall cover compilation of all time... the only thing that comes close is johnny cash's hurt... ;)
@@buma_cologne yes... that is great and humerous... :). after watching numerous haley performances now (many multi times)... i think my all time favorites are creep, all about the bass, habits and can't help fallin in love w/ you (extra version). i also very much enjoy all the live performances provided by haleysTusk.
Actually, I disagree. Haley Reinhart is by far the best vocalist to have ever performed with PMJ. As she is a cut above all the others and as indicated by the view counts of her various videos. As there is no one close. Morgan James is a distant second.
The PMJ version of Ice Ice Baby is awesome, I kid you not! Check it out (it's also hilarious).
"I would press my button on the first two words of her singing..."
We all do, baby, we all do...
Jess, one more tidbit about Morgan. Aside from being known as a genuinely sweet person, she absolutely refuses to be "tuned" for anything she works on. She will refuse projects, before she'd allow a tuned performance. 💕😋
oh good to know!
Morgan James is incredible. Her cover of Maps is easily top 5.
agreed, Maps is how discovered Morgan James and PMJ
Yes!
Miss Jess - As you probably know by now, there are nearly a dozen reaction videos to Dream On by PMJ and Morgan. But for me, a retired woodwind ("twig sucker") player, your reaction, along with Elizabeth Zharoff's (The Charismatic Voice), stand out over all the others because you take the time (even tho you're fangirling) to break down what's what - such as the time signature change from 4/4 to 6/8, to her excellent diction, her breath control, Scott's arrangement, the crescendos and decrescendos, not to mention the correct terminology for what the cello player was doing during his solo! Those and other technical details that most reactors don't pick up on are part of what makes this reaction video stand out, primarily because so few of the others are actually trained musicians - mostly just music fans that have found a niche doing reaction videos to build their channels. You KNOW what she's doing, how she's doing it, and why she's doing it because you've had similar training and understand the techniques she's using. Plus you're not afraid to come out and say it, even if some of your audience doesn't understand what you mean. Give them time!
So thank you for your reaction. For me, you've done an excellent job, and you get a standing "O" for it!
Thank you Russ! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your comment! I do whatever I can to be as thorough and clear as I can. It's something I continue to work on to be better for each new video. I appreciate your compliments, they are very motivational!

@@larrysinger9086 - ???
I could not have knowledgeably described what Morgan was doing, but it was clear to me that she was doing some highly technical things that most popular singers don't do. "I don't know what they call what she did, but I can tell she just did some fancy shizzle."
Yes on all counts!!!
Oh yes!
If you guys haven't heard Morgan James or Post Modern Jukebox before, you are in for a real treat, can't wait to hear Jess' reaction.
Can't wait!! THANK YOU for choosing such an AMAZING performance!
@@jessicasopranonotes No one should be surprised by this if they know Morgans' bio. Morgan has a degree In Music Voice from Juilliard.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to the cover of “Take me to Church” by PMJ feat. Morgan. PLEASE!!!!!
You are going to love this. She has a large selection of excellent songs. If you haven't heard PMJ before you could spend a year getting through them and never get bored. Another good one is PMJ featuring Haley Reinhart covering "Creep".
Ever since I watched/recorded, and posted this video, RUclips has been recommending that very video with Reinhart! I will write that down ☺️
@@jessicasopranonotes Well, that one's gonna last 4Omin 😂 Don't get me wrong, we're here for it! 🤩
@@jessicasopranonotes I believe it's still PMJ's most viewed video! 👀
As great as it is, I still prefer ain't no rest for the wicked. Joey's voice is perfect for their version
@@jessicasopranonotes Wait! - Don't be influenced by the recommendation for "Creep" - hells bells, everyone listens and responds to it, which is why it's the most viewed video of the PMJ catalog. There was a time when Haley did quite a few featured with PMJ, covering "7 Nation Army" by White Stripes, Sound Garden's "Black Hole Sun", or a duet with Puddles on "Mad World" (or the non-PMJ acoustic duet of Haley and Morgan on the Beatles "Dear Prudence").
I mean, at least to me, PMJ is a pretty amazing concept with over 150 musicians, vocals & touring crews having played with the group over the years, multiple tours, hundreds of videos that helped sustain and promote the careers of multiple artists with their own shows. Course you can always check out their wiki.
Niia was a minor vocalist (in terms of videos with PMJ), though she was featured his first videos in 2010 (ruclips.net/video/E1K1hthLjtg/видео.html a cover of Rhianna's "Only Girl In The World"), but she is one of my favorite hidden treasures from his troupe. Her videos don't have millions of views, but she is wonderful... and exotic and outrageous.
Morgan did 'take me to church' with Scott on piano that is also awesome, but really the vast majority of PMJ tunes are great listening.
Morgan is fantastic, but she can shine because of the well crafted arrangement. As always, great depth & breadth to this analysis
very true! thank you!
This was awesome! My favorite cover of this song. Morgan James is incredible, trained at Julliard, performed on Broadway and then decided that she is a soul singer.
Credit Scott Bradlee for creating PMJ and for his arrangements and piano performances. There are literally hundreds of worthy PMJ videos to choose from, but Morgan and Haley Reinhart have probably performed the most notable. Your analysis was nearly as flawless as the performance, although not done one one take. Look forward to more!
I can't wait to hear more from them! And yes, so much credit to Bradlee! Genius
@@jessicasopranonotes Scott Bradlee handles ALL the arrangements and has a major hand in the production as well - trust me, he can do it all!
Scott Bradlee is a fine-but-not-mind-blowing pianist, but an absolute genius arranger, with a further talent for finding the right people to sing/play his arrangements. ANYTHING from PMJ is worth your time, but--in addition to things already mentioned--let me draw your attention to Mad World, ft. Puddles Pity Party and Haley Rinehart.
@@steveeverett1736 Ummm... this must be that other Steve Everett again 'cause I don't remember making this comment. .😁 I think we met on another video although I don't remember which one. Cheers, Steve Everett
@@StevenEverett7 you're right, I think we have met this way before what can I say except we recognize quality?
There are so many great Postmodern Jukebox performances. Three that I especially enjoy are "Creep" and "Seven Nation Army" with Haley Reinhart, and "I Want You To Want Me" with Sara Niemietz.
Also "All About That Bass" with Haley, Morgan, Ariana Savalas, and Casey Abrams.
I agree with those choices, but I'd also include their cover with Sarah Niemetz, of 'Don't Stop Believin' by Journey
@@steveeverett1736 and anything with Tambourine Guy :)
One of the finest voices on the planet
definitely
Love Morgan James and Post Modern Jukebox. Also recommend you listen to PMJ and Hailey Reinhardt singing “Creep”. Best cover of Creep.
She was classically trained at Juliard, I believe. Here's a short clip of her singing an aria from Candide. m.ruclips.net/video/CDUTHMaNgLE/видео.html
omg I was so entertained!! She's a fabulous actress!
Hadn’t seen this before. She’s so good: not just as a singer, but her performance, acting, sense of fun, is just infectious.
I see someone has already mentioned her Julliard creds but she also starred on Motown, Addams Family and Godspell on Broadway. Love me some Morgan James.
This was a delight. It’s a great song. And she takes it to a crazy good level. We’ve got your analysis to enhance it. But honestly it’s just your reaction that is so entertaining. Thanks.
Thank you!
Don't skip Morgan's personal RUclips channel. During the initial hard COVID lockdown, she put out like 50 performances, all live on the spot, but really well miked, of a huge variety of songs. It's a smorgasbord of quality material.
I don't know who had more fun, you watching Morgan, or me watching you! What enthusiasm, pure joy, and FUN! I love learning all the musical and vocal details you provide, because it expands my appreciation of her vocal. But your infectious, joyful, 200,000 candlepower smile, your overall demeanor, is adorable!
There's nothing more fun to me than watching someone that is knowledgeable in a subject react to it. The looks on the face of the reactor as they see something this impressive happen makes it WAY more fun. Thank you.
OMG Jess, your reaction was everything I expected and more, thank you.
For more Morgan James, check out Take Me To Church, Maps is a definite must, I love Sledgehammer also.
The thing about Morgan James is she has I'll bet over 100 covers of here with an acoustic guitar player doing covers in her way. Sometimes there might be an extra singer, sometimes you get an extra musical instruments, sometimes it's just someone tapping on a box LOL.
You want a feel good video, one that puts the joy of music in you, check out Rather Be where it's Morgan and 3 back-up singers and an acoustic guitar.
But now to watch this AWESOME reaction again, Jess, you made me very, very happy
Yes! Morgan James is such an incredible singer.
Most of those covers are done with her husband who is an incredible guitarist.
yes!!! review her Take Me To Church please
Whenever someone I know is down- whenever I am - I listen to Rather Be by Morgan - music for the soul.
Oh my God! The passion on yuor face! An yes! Was amazed myself and was watching this with my mouth open. Awesome performance. Unbelievable.
There is a whole lot to love about Morgan James, She is a Masterclass in Vocal Performance and a perfectionist. In an interview with "The Charismatic Voice" She abhors any pitch correction and prefers to use no compression on her microphones and says she Self Compresses.
Just an amazing, joyful reaction here Jess! Also love your level of detail around pronunciation, breathing and phrasing.
Thank you! 😃
Watch Morgans version of Maps where the backing singer even stops an has a Oh Damn look on her face ! :D
I've gone down a few rabbit holes filled with reaction videos and this is truly one of the best. 😺
First time seeing you. You're captivating, I'm sold.
Beautiful reaction to an amazing performance. I had no idea how complex singing is until I heard your analysis of Morgan James' voice. This is the most impressive singing I've ever seen. I've heard it hundreds of times, and I'm still blown away by it.
Go ahead and make the reaction as long as it needs to be. Many of us are here for the education. We know we like what we are hearing. You help us to understand and appreciate some of what Morgan brings to the song that makes it sound so great. Right off the bat, you pointed out and then showed us the timing change from 4/4 to 6/8. That probably went right over the heads of many viewers. Love me some more PMJ
Your comment means a lot David, thank you!
Pmj maps!!!
Jess - loved your analysis and reaction. It added to the Beauty of the song!
your reaction to the song's intro made me hit LIKE so fast, the song barely started and I can see that you are gonna love it
Amongst everything else, she really uses the microphone well. The sound of the "s" consonant used, for instance, to begin the phrase "Sing with me...", the breathy quality to it really adds to the intimacy of her performance. Jazz is really in her wheelhouse and it was nice how they adapted this great Aerosmith song for her. Her performance is unbelievable.
You would LOVE Morgan and Scott Bradley on piano doing Take Me to Church.
This is one of my very favorite performances I've ever seen on RUclips. I put it in a tie with Postmodern Jukebox's cover of Creep featuring Haley Reinhardt.
You watch her in closer shots... You don't see her breath in, you don't see her prepare, she just opens her mouth and ... perfect sound.
Way back when I subscribed, my very first request was PMJ Creep ft Haley Reinhart so my fingers are crossed! 😉
(I may have mentioned that Haley is my favorite female vocalist and I'm a member of the "Daily Haley Club.")
". . . a stunning listen . . . you'll forget the lyrics are about a weirdo's obsessive crush." ~Gerrick D. Kennedy LA Times
I'm so grateful you decided to start your channel to give us this depth of analysis. You are "chef's kiss"
I've heard it a hundred times and every time she gives me chills! Great analysis and great reactions!
Your exquisite, heartfelt study of this performance is so moving, touching and so instructive. Thank you for your compassion in noting the majesty of Morgan James' artistry but also your understanding and sharing of great vocal work is also so powerful - thank you.
It’s always a pleasure to witness someone fall in love with PMJ songs. The technical marvel they craft in the space of 4 min is astounding
If you're looking for more Postmodern Jukebox, check out their cover of Seven Nation Army. Sounds like a strange choice, but trust me - it's as good as this.
Great insight and analysis, Jess. Can not wait to see/hear your reaction to PMJ/Creep.
Her diction/articulation and completion is so clean/clear at all volumes and in all registers - for me, that’s one of the things that set her apart from most others.
For PMJ, Creep, Seven Nation Army, Mad Mad World. Also more people need to experience the perfection of Jessye Norman.
Morgan came from Boise, Idaho and got accepted to Julliard right out of high school and has sung opera and on Broadway. She wanted to sing R & B
Grandgrandpa here.(70) You catch the 6/8-- everything is Soul.Esay but not easy for every body. Love this!!
still here a year later... Love you loving this ****** edited -i ADORE patient music... silence is important... i've witnessed dark quiet pause ... clean and pure is exactly right. dammmm. ******** I big L Love this channel... your breakdown of the long vowel... i never knew until you schooled me...
The way you reacted so viscerally! It feels so good to see someone who's so passionate about singing and music in general!
WOW! That's an analysis! You're on pair with Elizabeth Zharoff. Subscribed!
Thank you for your reaction and comments to "Dream On". Scott Bradlee is a genius at orchestration and giving a new feel to the "Oldies".
I also recommend "Creep". The orchestration, and singing are equal to "Dream On".
I'll also recommend you view "Royals" featuring Puddles the clown. He's much better than you'd expect and the arrangement has some surprises.
I love how she strides to the mike sporting her leopard high heels......Ha .....I love her !
I've watched more reactions to this video than I care to admit, I must say that I learned more from your analysis than from most of the others combined. Great reaction - I love both your obvious training and the passion you bring.
It `s very impressing, that you noticed every detail, from the first time you heard this cover ! More then 90% are passing many of them, also the Profis !
I have almost no idea about Musik, but I adored this song ( and Crazy !!) during hot summer nights on the Greek Islands after some Southern Comforts ..... Aaaaacchh..!
You gave us a graduate course in music appreciation. Thank you. (Even though your lesson was way over my head I appreciate your analysis)
love PMJ...the PMJ line lead me to Morgan and Haley and to watching tap dancing to Lady Gaga. Danke, darlin' for the breakdown. I am very sincerely grateful for the time you have taken to address a song I know, I like, but then add layers by talking about the arrangement, the small background shadows that elevate something from good to amazing, all the little details that make music a soulful experience.
Morgan James' cover of 'Sledgehammer' is fantastic.
Always happy to see someone else who appreciates the classically trained (Julliard) Morgan James :). I spent a long time being the only person I knew who appreciated both her and PMJ :)
A singer that takes a back seat with these PMJ reactions is Allison Young singing Mr Blue Sky but its definitely a cover that is up there with the others.
Anything Morgan does is worthy. She is classically trained and it shows.
Jessica, i really enjoying your reactions because as non musician but have a good ears I'm learning from you. Also your genuine reactions and passion are so pleasant.
Keep up the good work!
I'm amazed at your analysis. You're the real deal!! Thanks for helping me realize why I like this cover so so so much!!!!
I had the same reaction of laughing when I first listen to this. It's that awesomely awkward sensation when you don't have...scratch that...when _there is no_ appropriate reaction to the events one witnesses and is left stunned in this absurd position of not finding a sufficiently rewarding reaction to project...so we laugh incredulously at this sentiment..."how can this be?!?!"
Awesome reaction, Jess!
Whew,,, mind bender, that lady is serious… Betcha Ill be googling Morgan James the rest of the evening… Jess as always, the details, I’m always so impressed, you are so awesome!
Yep, I got giddy the first time I heard Morgan too. Several concerts later, and I'm still completely enamored with her!
You must hear Morgan's cover of "Take Me To Church" simply amazing. Morgan is a Julliard graduate trained in classic voice. She is amazing in all that she sings.----Tom
Only someone like you would appreciate Morgan James was trained at the New York Juilliard school of music it shows glad you liked and glad you noticed she is something special
Be sure to listen to PMJ + Morgan James' cover of Take Me To Church. Amazing.
I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this song…so awesome! I can’t get enough of this song. I would highly recommend doing this analysis for PMJ featuring Morgan James performing “Break Free.”
Morgan has taken up some amazing challenges like covering the whole of the Beatles' "White Album". She has an incredible voice and she drives it like a Formula One champion on the perfect car. Just one recommendation, her take on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" ruclips.net/video/1_ekta_LzS0/видео.html
Yeah it's comparable to the great KD Lang's.
You are freaking brilliant. I fell in love with your reactions, so cute and pure, but your analysis is genius. I instinctively knew how perfect this performance was, but you explained why. I am no stranger to music, in the 80's my middle school choir won first place in the High School division of both the Youth and Music Festival in Vienna and the World's Fair in Vancouver
I say it once again. I always get goosebumps when I hear Morgan James singing. I must listen to her and this particular song at least 5 times to get her vibes
Post modern jukebox Morgan James sang it's all about that bass is the 1st time I heard Morgan James sing. After hearing that song I knew Morgan James was a great singer
loved your analysis, thank you!
You must! must! react to TMJ featuring Haley Reinhart covering, Creep, Seven Nation Army, Black Hole Sun. Haley is the most underrated singer on the planet you will spend two hours trying to dissect her fantastic singing abilities. I really appreciate your professional expert but fun reactions please please react to Haley
Girl you getting crazy over there. hheheh This is an insane performance and Morgan James is a masterclass singer.
Best reaction and explanation of a great cover of a song! Thank you!
Yessssssss, Jess. You made me understand even better why I love this performer. You made a great video, and I loved the repetitions and your enthusiasm to do them.
Thank you for this. I love your analysis. Learned a lot.
Yesss. Another amazing reaction! Btw morgan james was classically trained at julliard in opera singing. She's great.
yes she's amazing!
Perfection! This rendition is built to perfection!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Morgan James is perfection! Thank you, Jess, thank you again and again!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love it. Great reaction video - and you picked out things that others have missed, which is why I keep watching your videos 👍
I appreciate that! Thanks Duncan ☺️
I like hearing your analysis of the song but what really makes it is your reaction. Keep up the good work. Jess, I'll be watching you again
Thank you!
There is no-one that compares just enjoy she is a treat, try "Angel from Montgomery" or "Sweet Child-O- Mine" with Scott Bradley on the keys, too many more to mention but the lady is a true artist.
Immediate subscribe. Your enthusiasm and knowledge about music is such a vibe!
INSANELY GOOD and your utter delight make this so great to watch and listen to!
I just stumbled upon this critique. I LOVE your reaction to this performance, which is one of my favorites. It is so refreshing to see a professional appreciate the whole experience of a great performance. I’m now a fan!
Morgan James is a well trained singer(Juilliard)--she also does a lot of soprano
business in a cover of Hozier's "Take me To Church" The PMJ founder, arranger,
and piano player, Scott Bradlee joins her for that in RUclips video:
"Take Me To Church - Piano / Vocal Hozier Cover ft. Morgan James"
James is one of the singers that has toured with the band. Another of Bradlee''s arrangements, Radiohead's "Creep" has ~96million RUclips views:
"Creep - Vintage Postmodern Jukebox Radiohead Cover ft. Haley Reinhart"
For some PMJ fun, I like these videos:
"All About That Bass - Postmodern Jukebox European Tour Version"
&
"Royals - ("Sad Clown With The Golden Voice") - Postmodern Jukebox Lorde Cover ft. Puddles Pity Party"
Morgan James, when you just reacted to went to Juilliart and trained in Opera, she is also done musical theater and has been on Broadway. She had to take extra training to learn how to belt, as you should know opera singers don't train in belting
Very cool! Unfortunately we aren't trained in belting. I have been training myself for quite some time now because I think it's important to know and be able to access.
New fan here! I love your passion and love for your craft, it's so infectious. Can't wait to see more from you 😊
Loved your analysis.
Post modern juke box seven nation army featuring haley reinhardt and creep
Love to see you so enthusiastically enjoying this. They created, as you said, a beautiful moment, and is great to share. Thank you for that.
Thanks for this most enjoyable video. You covered and explained aspects of Morgan's performance others have not, and expertly.
PMJ and Ms. Reinhart's version of Creep is a masterpiece of performance and arrangement and you should definitely react to it. However.. I'd like to draw your attention to the PMJ cover of the Cranberries song Zombie, with Maiya Sykes delivering a devastatingly powerful and soulful rendition of the quintessential anti-violence anthem. It never fails to send chills down my spine.
For something lighter, PMJ - Hannah Gill - Casey Abrams doing Crazy by Gnarls Barkley is a lot of fun and an analysis of Hannah's voice (mezzo? alto?) would no doubt be highly enlightening.
Hello ! You are so expressive ! Thanks for entertaining me in the most beautiful manner ! One more thing : Reaction video when done by real professional or skilled singer or coach do make a great difference with those of reactors just allowing a few words like "my god!", a lot of mimics, but all these hardly hide the lack of genuine vocal academic knowledge. I mean one of the common thing shared by the "good" reactors like you is that they are so well articulate and obviously clever people.
... Thank You for pointing out the 6/8 timing ... when Miss Morgan "STRUTS" in ... Step ... Step ... Step ... Stop ... Turn ... it works perfectly !!! (2) beats per step !!! and that sets Miss Morgans' "Stage Presence" ... in the origonally video at 4:00 ==> 4:12 mins ... Miss Morgan literally pulls out the "Oak Stake" and DRIVES it through the heart of this song ... SLAYING IT !!!
Fantastic channel and incredible depth to details. Thank you.
Much appreciated! Thank you for watching!
@8:53 I was thinking was there is not to like about your great reaction?! You are wonderful. Keep up the good work and greetings from Funland (Finland)!
my goodness this was enjoyable to listen to and to learn from. Thank you.
❤️❤️❤️ Absolutely loved the reaction
