Very nice. What about something about Sir Richard Francis Burton? He is even more interesting, he was sort of a renaissance man😀 a polymath, a man of many abilities. Cheers

Fascinating presentation as always!! I was not familiar with this gentleman but you have me interested enough to start a search for his book "Cold Steel".
I agree with him in that much can be learned from historical works. I recall that the WW1 Italian shock troops, the Arditi, were trained using a historical manuscript, The Flower of Battle (14th Century). The results showed that it produced deadly soldiers who creasted havoc in enemy trenches with their knives. Thank you for all of your efforts and vast knowledge

Hutton & Castle started the HEMA path that that was sorely interrupted, from the onset of the Great War in 1914, all the way to the 1980s. While you can argue both men looked at the historical texts through the prism of late Victorian Baroque Fencing theory (*"medieval swords were heavy, clumsy, near edge-less clubs, rapiers make swordplay skilled, etc...) they tried their best to recreate the source techniques the best they could, and hence provide a great example for participant researchers.
