How can transracial adoptees reconcile their identities? | The Stream

  • While once rare in the US, parents adopting children of a different race to their own is now common.
Some 73 percent of non-white children who are adopted are done so by white parents. Overall, more than 40 percent of adoptions in the US are transracial, a significant increase from 28 percent in 2004.
A number of adults who were adopted by parents of a different race have come forward to say they faced isolation and identity crises growing up, with the impact proving life-lasting. Other transracial adoptees report no major issues.
In the UK, the question has proven controversial with a debate centered on whether white parents can raise non-white children with a strong sense of ethnic identity and whether they are equipped to prepare them for racism they may face as adults.
British MPs in 2014 repealed a requirement that adoption agencies give "due consideration" to a child’s race when matching them with parents. The change was made partly because it was leading to non-white children waiting longer for adoption. Despite the change, the debate continues in the UK
In this episode of The Stream, we meet a panel of experts to learn more about this complex issue and ask how the challenge of identity can be reconciled with the need to find children loving homes.

Two Black parents adopt a White kid and think its cruel that another kid wants to know how a White kid is bi-racial when he has two Black parents.
Moreso, a White family wants to adopt a Black kid and the Black counselor asks the White family how come the White family hasn't had diversity in their family before? 🤔 Do these SJWs ever listen too themselves?

I found it frustrating to have Keia cut off. (I don't know if there was an entire episode left for this gentle introduction to a topic, but this either needed more time or fewer guests.) I would have liked a longer conversation, (and if scheduling required, it could be divided into two episodes.) Can't just have one episode for each guest because we would lose the reactions, counterpoints and constructive comments.[All of that effort to get the conversation started and then truncated early seemed like a waste of momentum.]

It was only when this was being discussed on a YT show, that I realised that transracial adoption was a concern for many people. Having had my own daughter placed for adoption by her mother. I am white Anglo and my love partner is Chinese. Our daughter is now, 49.
Her adoptive parents were Anglo White and the mother, Japanese. So, appearance it worked. But culturaly, Chinese and Japanese are very different so there was an uneasy feeling in my daughter because it was never revealed to her that she is actually Chinese and not, as she was lead to believe by her adopting Japanese mother. It was much easier for her to understand her white side because her natural father and adopting father are both white Anglo. Latter, my daughter started to learn more about her Chinese family, their culture and her family history going back to a small village in Guangzhou, China. Overall though, in my daughter's being there has been fractured identity threads with some being true while others were implanted.

I'd really like to know the motive for adopting outside your race. I'm surprised this hasn't been asked. Can someplease enlighten me on why some of choose to adopt outside your race? It's obviously a difficult experience. So I'm just wondering why take on the added stress as if adopting isn't difficult enough

@@xaymacagrace575 you jumped on the example of dogs as a correct analogy, it's not. Your argument makes no sense if you accept the example. Especially wolves, I'm sorry but that's silly.
Dogs have been artificially bred to pronouncedly exhibit certain traits, humans have not been. Such an experiment would have to span many human generations, it's not just inhumane it's uncontrollable.
Simply put on average how we differ is insignificant, our species has not had long enough in isolation to truly diverge, and our conditions have not really been different enough.
One exception is skin pigmentation, this is because the more sun (UV rays) you have the harder the environment for pale people (Sunburn/ UV damage), however the less sun the harder it is for darker people, as not only is the pigmentation a waste, it also blocks too much of the sun that we need to produce vitamin D.
Honestly there are many subtle differences, you might point out, some might be circumstantial/cultural, some made-up, and yes some true.
However really do not make comparisons with dog breeds and wolves, otherwise youre incorrectly implying that there's a drastic difference in build, and temperament, which specific to wolves (or pit-bull and like) means you accept one race is dangerous.
Which along with being refutable, is also obviously not your point.
Sorry to rant but, all the best.

I was adopted as an infant by a Sicilian born family- when I sprouted bright red hair, & grew taller than everyone by 3rd grade, there was INTRA FAMILY hostility twords me & my family which at 1st I didn't even register- only after years did I grasp that whenever folks referred to 'The Mic' (ie: 'look, the mic is here') that they were actually talking about me! I was about 10 & it brought me to tears- but my grandma went off, & said 'She is as much a part of this family as anyone else- and anyone who has a problem w it is NOT a part of this family, capise?' :) So I sympathize.

If you want to be a parent then adoption is the only moral thing to do. It is immoral to reproduce biological kids since there are already millions of orphan kids available for adoption worldwide. Also since you can't get the consent of a child to be born in this cruel world. Nobody chose to come into existence. Rather, we were all forced into the unfortunate state of existence without our consent to have to endure all the pain and suffering that comes with it. Had we never existed we’d have never suffered.~
    ~
The Benatarian asymmetry demonstrates why it is always better never to exist, regardless of the pleasure to pain ratio in one’s life. Whereas:
    1. The presence of pleasure is good, and
    2. The presence of pain is bad;
    3. The absence of pain is good even if one does not exist to benefit from that good, but
    4. The absence of pleasure is not bad unless someone already exists for which such an absence would be a deprivation.~
    ~
Given the above, it is always a harm to come into existence and reproduction is never morally justified. For a more in depth look I highly recommend reading Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence by Dr. David Benatar (professor and chairman of philosophy at the University of Cape Town, South Africa).~
    ~
Note: The above applies to all sentient beings, not only humans. They too were harmed by being brought into existence.

Seems to me that as an example it would go for any ethnicity whatever you were but as an example and maybe especially on a four way pair of parents are raising a black child they owe it to that black child to find a responsible black adult to give them that talk that they give their own children about racism and police brutality and all of that stuff and it seems to me that the white parent would also want to go and be given that talk so they can get a better understanding. That's the only way I can see that they could get justice for their child.

I think it is being discussed because it is a part of racial and cultural equity. I feel this in a very real way as the child of an interracial adoption. I am a Latina who was adopted as an infant from Bolivia. My mother is a second generation Jewish immigrant from the U.S. Throughout my childhood I was told the same that Love is what matters not race. However, there is also the native cultural heritage of the child to consider. I yearned to understand my people from the age 4. At 10 I begged to go to Spanish immersion school in the city, but it was too far. Of course I learned all about the Holocaust and our Jewish history, but it wasn't the same. My whole life I have struggled with the missing piece of myself that only my culture and people can fill. If a child cannot truly learn their culture sometimes it can be difficult to truly love themselves. At least that was my experience.
