EA WRC VR is actually GOOD now?! Rally Mexico Ortega Stage

- Like the Title says! Maybe from the big Steam update (90GB), or maybe from tweaking Engine.ini - or possibly both... EA Sports WRC VR Beta is running really good in my Quest 3! Running a steady 90fps with minimal pop-in and is looking GREAT inside the headset now!

Make a copy first. Also if you're not comfortable with editing files in the AppData folder you might want to skip this.

Some information:
r.EyeAdaptation.LensAttenuation=0.45 // EyeAdaption tweaks the effect from dark to bright (dark cockpit bright track or coming out of a tunnel), lower is smaller amount of brightness adaption
r.Color.Mid=0.50 // Change the generell brightness, lower is darker
r.TonemapperGamma=2.2 // Basic gamma of the game, sRGB default is 2.2, lower is darker

I kept the tweaks to what was typed and seems to work great! The settings seemed to have carried through the update too as the menus were noticeably (but not negatively) darker and when in game, the washed-out and overly bright areas felt much better. Thanks @Max.44 for pointing me in the right direction!

The 1.8.1 patch was less than 800MB. It's possible if you do not have at least 90GB free disk space that it may re-download the whole game. This is because to do just a patchpart of the process includes making a second copy of the whole game. Below are the patch notes which were posted on Reddit and Discord, there were no performance improvements in the patch - your visuals looking better must be just the changes in the Engine.ini file (which everyone should make if using VR as lighting is very overblown otherwise).

It is a hotfix to address one specific issue discovered shortly after the release of v1.8.0.

- Fixed an issue with Quick Play Multiplayer in which completing an event at Älgsjön (Sweden) would cause the game to crash.
Ah yes probably the free space issue (I really need to not have 3 versions of GTA5!!! lol). Thanks for the info! I find it baffling that Steam has no info on an update it forced me to perform... I definitely believe the tweaks to the Engine.ini were beneficial and would recommend it for everyone!

The quality and smoothness of the graphics and gameplay looks very realistic
It’s leagues better in-headset now too! So I get a good experience and I get to share good footage too!

I'm fairly happy with the graphics now with the recent update and the tweaks to the Engine.ini file! It now looks in-headset as what the video recording shows (here on YT)

Heck ya man quest 2 is great! I can run dirt rally 2 in much higher graphics in my quest 2/3 than my Bigscreen!

My only problem with VR in this game is that it feels like I'm sitting way too far from the wheel and everything is far away. I've tried changing the position with the camera keybinds but I can't get close enough. Maybe I need to sit a bit more back when the headset calibrates and then move forward to my original driving position? :o
I tend to push myself way far back in my seat while resetting the VR view - that helps a lot to feel like I'm closer to the wheel! But the way it records, I may have to just keep it at a distance since the recording cuts off most of the wheel!
Hi mate, do you use oculus app or virtual desktop with your Q3? Could you pls illustrate more on your .ini settings ?
Hey! So I use the Oculus Link to connect my Quest 3 to PC. I tried the Steam version of Virtual Desktop and I really disliked it. It may be more powerful but it's clunky and ugly imo.
I don't really understand the ini tweaks, just that they help a lot with the washed-out and overblown look in the VR headset - all you have to do is add the code to the bottom of the ini file (I opened with notepad app to edit). The link in the description has a little more info on it - I just tried it and it was very helpful!

I got the 16ft version as my sim rig isn't close to my desk - you could save money with a shorter version.
It does charge same time though its very slow compared to when not using the headset .
there was never 90gb update just a small patch....but to apply it steam rechecks all the files for integrity reasons ...keep running my friend
Idk why then. It had to download 96GB (took a while) then installed (took a while) and then it verified after. Took like 30 min to update. Not sure why mine did that if it was just a small update - also still nothing posted about the update/patch.
Maybe it was just the changes to the Engine.ini file that made the VR good

VR is just about good enough if you have a pc strong enough to run it with upscaler turned off. Overall it’s a downgrade compared to Dirt Rally 2.0, but that being said I’ve played 35 hours in VR since the beta release and i absolutely love it! Having all these new stages is exactly what I needed in my sim racing life and I can’t get enough of it!
I agree it's awesome to have these new amazing stages! It seems recording is the killer to gameplay... when I don't record it runs quite well! So most likely I'll just deal with it so I have videos to share
It being a downgrade compared to a 5 year old game is completely unacceptable. I mean why even make a completely new game then? They could have just built new stages for Dirt Rally 2, implemented the new WRC cars and build a career mode around that. That probably would have been cheaper to make and a better overall game. I won't spend money on this until the VR mode on par or better than Dirt Rally 2.
I doubt it ever will be on par with DR2… the game just isn’t optimized well. I haven’t even played in weeks because it’s so laggy. I was hopeful since I had already purchased the game on the VR promise.

@@nongamerplays i tried some but don’t think they are performance related. Added the last 2 params but didn’t feel a difference in lighting. Will try all params today, thanks!
Oh that's too bad - I noticed a light (blown-out and desaturated) change immediately... hopefully you can get it to work!
I’m a bit confused? Are we supposed to copy those tweaks right into the engine.ini or are they supposed to be in there already?

I can't find anything on it so I guess it just reinstalled my game for some reason - 1.8 still I assume. So must have been the changes to the Engine.ini file that made the difference.

I still feel nauseated with all the hammering going on. I'm happy with VR indie games and built in apps.
Some people have a better experience by adjusting the horizon option in settings. I believe locking the horizon is harder for some players. That may help!

Are you asking about the "update"? Well I saw a big update, and 2 others did too, but several people have said there's no update ... but I think the Engine.ini tweaks are what helped the most.

Oh I see! Sorry I misunderstood; yeah the VR Beta came with version 1.8.0 and is a free update for everyone - Just have your headset on/active and the game will ask you if you want to switch to VR!

…that’s making it good? I’ve used the quest 3 before and after the update/tweaks and it’s def better but will be trying with my more resource-intensive headset this week to test

I've had very mixed luck using the UEVR mod for various Unreal games... It's too bad VR is always thought of last... (its the ONLY way I want to game anymore)
@@nongamerplays its mainly because of the deferred rendering method that Codemasters has chosen in unreal. "The main advantage of the use of forward rendering in game engines is that it not only tends to have a lower footprint resulting in faster rendering but also allows for the use of better Anti-Aliasing techniques like MSAA." yeah, I have valve index and the quality sucks in EA WRC
Other than the smooth, then not smooth frame rate (still trying to figure out why), the view at least now looks the same in the Quest as the recording. I will be trying my Bigscreen tonight to see how that fairs... but even DR2 needed low graphics settings with my Beyond so I'm not hopeful!

Yeah that’s true. Pretty ugly! But definitely not on my top 10 requirements for a rally game!

It's not too much to ask that the 3rd installment of a franchise (codemasters rally) be better than the previous iteration! They seriously dropped the ball on a lot of thigs. I'm just starved for new rally (VR) content!
Tarmac still sucks. H pattern cars sucks too for heeltoe.
I think only RBR and BeamNG have nailed tarmac driving for rally
VR might be "ok" now but the game is still no where as good as Dirt 2
I have a new video posting in 45 minutes that shows even the VR isn't so great after all... I agree it's been a lame start to a very anticipated game... The new variety though is nice! I will likely be getting back to DR2 too!

@chriskonieczny9372 I use OBS to record. I have the game source, and audio for the game. And also I have my camera as a separate input device and the audio from the quest is on another channel
