  • Today we share our thoughts on the Supercharged VR6 Corrado after driving it for a couple of weeks & about 500 miles... what could possibly go wrong?
    I hope this video gives you something to amuse you for a little while. Why not check out some of my other videos while you've got some idle time on your hands?
    Make sure to like, subscribe, and share if you are a car enthusiast who enjoys working on your own car as a shade tree mechanic or fellow grease monkey, or if you just enjoy watching the misery of trying to keep one of the most notoriously unreliable cars ever produced in running condition!
    Not even Ratarossa, Scotty Kilmer, The Car Wizard, Johnny the Car Ninja, Hoovie or Tavarish would dare tackle the insanity of resurrecting and modifying a 206,000 mile Corrado VR6 at the same time as a vintage Fiat Spider and maintaining a 230,000 mile 1.8t Jetta while tooling around in a 166,000 mile Mk4 R32 daily driver!! But I'm a special kind of crazy.
    If you have an .:R32, Corrado, Fiat, Alfa, or some other weird quirky car that is a challenge to keep on the road, please share in the comments! Mine is also enjoyable but mines also straight piped currently and totally obnoxious which makes me crazy in about 10 minutes of driving but I really love seeing corrados done in many different configurations its nice to see ppl driving these cars instead of afraid to put miles on in fear of ruining the value

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      With 206,000 miles on this one (and 304,000 miles on my last one) I'm definitely one to not be concerned about the value in relation to putting miles on it! :)

    I am in a very similar place as you are. Had my VR corrado for about 15yrs now, I knew I wanted to SC the car since day 1. Bought the SC (VF kit) about 12 yrs ago and slowly built the engine chassis brakes etc... till I finally decided to install it about 4 yrs ago. Since then it has and still is a slow tuning process of breaking fixing and improving.
    Loving the car as it is today but is not anymore the car that it once was. Turned from highway fast cruiser into a canyon carver. Love it but is not a Corrado anymore. And no one talks about that anywhere. Tuning a car changes the ethos with what it was once made.
    I lived in SD for a few years and I carefully looked the scenery looking for some recognizable background.

    Hi I have the same charger in my MK2 golf and haven't had any issues. The only thing I can say different is the induction sound you hear from a stock vr6 engine is toned down which is a bit of a shame. But you get a different sound which is nice. If you need to order new charger bearings then number of the bearings FAG 6003 you need two. The noise is probably the main engine drive belt slipping slightly, mine does the same at full power. I'm running standard boost 7psi.

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks! That's super helpful with the bearing part numbers. This charger was just rebuilt before I installed it, so hopefully it will be awhile before I need to rebuild it. Yes, I do still experience some drive belt slip in 1st and 2nd gears at high rpms... seems to only do it in those gears.

    Love your point of view man; and your corrado!!
    I put 160k on my 98 gti vr6 that I used to have and it’s about the noise of the engine that makes it so awesome

      Thanks! The visceral experience is definitely part of the appeal. It's what made Jeremy Clarkson say that the VR6 Corrado was the closest thing to owning a Ferrari without owning a Ferrari.
      Always wanted to get a Mk3 VR6 GTi... perhaps someday I'll be able to find one and include it in the fleet :)

    Sorry for asking an indiscreet question, but what kind of side skirts are these? I've been looking for something so discreet for a long time...

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  3 месяца назад

      No worries. Those were made by TEC Automobildesign in Germany, sadly a tuner that no longer exists. They used Opel Calibra side skirts, shortened to fit the Corrado, and then wrapped them in carbon fiber.

  • @ScramTek

    People complain that you chose a supercharger instead of a turbocharger?
    It’s cheaper, the install is much simpler, it puts less stress on the engine and most importantly, you should be seeing around 300 bhp (with zero lag). And a 300 bhp Corrado is not a slow vehicle!

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      I typically find that those with strong opinions on the subject are expressing what they'd really like to do with their car and looking for validation that their ideas are good. Not necessarily a bad thing. Or they've already done that sort of modification and they're justifying that choice.
      I also find that there are folks that went the supercharger route already, and they were looking for big numbers and were disappointed that it was harder to achieve that sort of performance on this platform with this approach. Those are the folks that aren't satisfied with the well-thought-out package that places like VF Engineering have constructed that delivers a particular range of performance, and they try to throw on smaller pullies, bigger injectors, bigger intercoolers, different software, etc to try to eek every last bit of power out of it, and at the end of the day, they often invest thousands of dollars into making only a nominal gain above the kit as it stood originally. Then they end up dumping the supercharger, frustrated with it, and go the turbo route, where they are able to make a lot more power, but then that's accompanied by a whole different set of challenges.

    I really think the automatic low boost supercharger is the comfortable way to enjoy the corrado it seems so much less violent then my 5 speed vr6 corrado

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      It's definitely comfortable. Though I do wish they'd put in the 5 speed O1m transmission instead of the 4 speed 096 transmission.

  • @selfdriven1343
    @selfdriven1343 2 года назад +2

    As commented the last time, I find it cool that you went down that route, but I couldn't agree more with what you said, even if I was more for turbos. Sometimes it is rather strange that so many people have a hard time accepting that others might not like what they like. Just let everyone be with cars but also in life. That would make things so much easier and frankly also more fun.

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      Agreed. Different strokes for different folks. There's always an apex predator out there with more money to spend on modifying and making big numbers. Having the fastest isn't the point for me. Having a great time enjoying the experience I've built, and letting others enjoy that along with me is far more achievable and worthwhile.

    Couple of questions. Where'd you relocate the charcoal canister to? Is that carbon fiber rear spoiler a SpoonFed one? What phone mount is that? Thanks!

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад +1

      Just realized my reply to you didn't post. The carbon cannister was relocated to the rear firewall, next to the AC expansion valve.
      The phone mount... well, I'm currently trying out a few. One of them is a Skoshe that mounts in the CD slot of the stereo. It's quite stable for the phone but I think it's damaging the stereo, so... not going to recommend it.
      I'm also trying out a Wedgey unit that slots in between the dash and dash bezel, secured using 3M body moulding tape. Still testing to see how it holds up with temperature changes & rough roads.
      The third one I'm trying mounts to the top of the dash itself using 3M body moulding tape. Not a huge fan of how obtrusive it is, but it's stable and locates the phone in such a manner that it can be cooled by the AC vents, which is nice. Have had the phone overheat from exposure to the sun while driving, and it shut down while I was using it for navigation... not great. So extra cooling is a good thing.

      @@CliffjumperCars is the rear spoiler the SpoonFed one? Can we relocate the charcoal canister to the frame rail underneath the battery like on a Mk3?

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      @@docwyte Rear spoiler is indeed a Spoonfed Tuning carbon fiber extended wing. Super happy with it!
      I couldn't put the carbon canister under the frame rail since that's where the intake for the supercharger went. It had to go either go against the firewall or on the other side of the engine bay, and I didn't want to run all that extra vacuum hose.

    • @docwyte
      @docwyte 2 года назад

      @@CliffjumperCars I may do the CF wing, that way I don't have to pay a shop to paint the fiberglass one. Quick question, local guy has a Z Eng kit on his 95 GTi VR6 for sale. But his MAF is after the blower, your is before? Did you move yours there or is the kit supposed to have it there? Also, his blower is super loud, nowhere near as quiet as yours....

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      @@docwyte The original installation instructions for the kit had the MAF after the blower. They changed that in the early 2000's, and began including an extended MAF wiring harness to relocate it to before the blower. Reason is the turbulence caused by the supercharger impeller caused the MAF to have inaccurate readings and made for poor idle & part throttle driveability issues.
      There are also different pulleys available for the charger, ranging in boost put from 6psi to 12psi. The smaller pulleys make for faster impeller speeds, more boost, and more noise. Also, they switched to a cogged belt system at some point, and those are much louder too.

    What 6th speed gearbox do you have ( engine code?). I drove the Vr6 corrado 120km at 3k rpm . The TT 225 has 6 speed but still does 120km at 3k so really 5th gear is like 4.5 and 6th is just 5th

    • @CliffjumperCars
      @CliffjumperCars  2 года назад

      I'll have to go check which code it is. It's from a 2003 24V GTI. At one point I had that code committed to memory, but it's been awhile since I've looked at it.

      Thanks for chiming in! I don't take it above 3000rpm until oil temp is above 180*F as a general rule. She'd already been out on the road and was fully warmed up with good pressure. Also, the motor is built with quite a few bits of hardware to enable it to safely go into high rpms. Covered that in a previous video. Cheers & happy motoring!
