For the Love of Puzzles has been preparing for Worlds and has done a lot of videos comparing strategies. If you haven’t found her yet, I would give her a watch.

$2 and no missing pieces! Money well spent. Good luck at your first puzzling competition. I hope you can keep us updated on your activities. I am looking forward to it 😀

My biggest strategy I had to pick up was to flip all the pieces over first. It’s my least favorite part of the puzzle but it makes pulling out the obvious sections way faster. Also I tend to stand and move around the table. I also just leave a slush pile of not easily sortable stuff til the end at which point you’ll recognize textures better.

I love this! As another person who does lots of puzzles but never focuses on time this was very relatable. You got really close to your goal and have lots of good ideas so I'm sure your next practice will be much faster.

Stopping the full sort because it feels slow and one wants to start buiding - that is so relatable. I always feel the same, sometimes I finish the sorting, sometimes I start building. Should be the same, timewise, so I go with my gut feeling of the day.
Regarding labels: Sorting them into one big pile feels fine, but when you came to building them you could just have spread the pile flat (so you see all pieces) and grab the pieces of one label and instantly build it (you mentioned it similarly in the video).
You might want to rebuild the puzzle (I would watch a second time 😂) and flip all pieces without any sorting. Looks very chaotic but you will be amazed how easy it is to the pick out, say, the yellow pieces from the whole mess. 😊
Good try and good time for a first!

Speed puzzling does not appeal to me but I wish you luck with your first adventure therein. What a great find at the thrift shop! That looks like a puzzle I would enjoy doing - at my own slow pace. 😉

There's no sneezing in speed puzzling! (I don't even know if you'll get that reference.) Looking forward to teaming up at PJS!

You did really well your first go!!! Somebody else also mentioned For The Love Of PUzzles. Donna Louise has tried three different methods to find what works for her. If you rememeber in world's, the top two puzzlers work a puzzle completely differently. Alejandro stands and uses both hands to drill in those pieces! Meanwhile the other girl (cant remember her name! 🤔) used one hand while casually sitting back. And still getting an amazing time!! If you record your speed round again, dont worry abt engaging us in the video, just work the puzzle. Your time might be a minute or so faster. And I can see sliding back into a rhythm because you enjoy the puzzle and it slows you down. That's what I worry abt for myself.

Usually I put on youtube videos as background while I speed puzzle, so it was really weird to have to have to be the opposite! When I'm not trying to be speedy, I always sort puzzles. For 300 and 500 pieces, I approach it differently. Some puzzles I don't sort at all! But I have found for some images not sorting totally cripples me. I usually go for a happy medium. Sorting out a few main colors/patterns while flipping so I have something to start with. As I fill in or can't figure out what to do next, I inevitably start putting like pieces together from the rest. Mostly the hard part is keeping the "go go go" mentality! Good luck!

You may not have met your goal but that is still an excellent finish time! Looks like a difficult image, having such large blocks of similar colors.
I’m not sure I’ll ever do any speed puzzling (still new to the world of constant puzzling), but I love watching puzzling competition footage. Hopefully we will get to see some from your competition. I’ll be keeping up with the competition in Spain, as well, once videos start popping up via youtubers.

Heyyy, that is a fantastic time for a novice speed puzzler! Definitely much faster than any I've done! Great start :-) Also, I loved your explanation about why you usually don't look much at the cover -- I feel the same way. It's fun to see the scene come together gradually and discover details along the way.

It’s a win in that you were able to identify what you can do differently next time you practice. 👍

Yay! I will be trying to compete at Puzzle Jam too, gotta find a partner though lol. Biggest tip I would give you, Flip All the pieces first!! The method I like to use is flipping and sorting out edges. I'll put the non-edges around the outside of my work space and the edges in the general middle area. That way you can keep enough space for the puzzle as you build. Once you get quick with it, you can flip all the pieces under 15 mins (ideally under 10). Either way, you did great! Lots of competitions want you do to 500pc in less than 2 hrs. 😊

You should rewatch this video over as “just a viewer” and listen to your commentary to get a good idea of which way to work your strategy!! That sounds silly but this is why your practicing. Also you should just turn them all over in the beginning without sorting!! I would get one other 500 piece Ravensburger, if you need one I have I can give to you!! I would love to speed puzzle but I have tremors and at times my hands and forearm just jerk for no reason. I have watched a lot of speed puzzlers and do try it now and again on my own!!!

There is a Value vs non value video on Lean made simple channel. I just think about how it is related to speed puzzling. What is the real value?
Normally there are some standard process steps, unboxing, flipping, sorting groups based on edge/non edges or pattern or color. Then assembling small groups, or makeing first the edge. A lots of trial, rotating....
In the ideal world, every piece is flipped, and we know the exact location (no need to lookfor on the image), and can move there. This is the value.
What are wastes here? finding, trial, put back, trial again, move small assembled parts, moving flipped and grouped pieces because we have too much inventory and we dont have enough space on table....😀

I tried speed puzzling once let's just say it didn't go well ! I thought you had a pretty good time. Don't forget you will have a partner so probably one can sort while one can build. Maybe think about how to open the box I notice a lot of people have trouble with that in competition. There are quite a few videos on speed puzzling. Have you watched the World's from 2022 online. The winner worked a 500pc puzzle in 32:00 minutes.... Have Fun !!

As a beginner puzzler trying to practise some speed puzzling this was a very wonderful video, thank you! ❤️ You were super quick as well - and mostly with only one hand!! 😳 But I have to say I was quite worried when you started to do the purple and the yellow colours before all the pieces were turned... 🤣
