  • When I saw that the Frazer Price Brass Watercolour Palette Box had been released on Jackson's Art, I just HAD to have one! I am pretty sure these were originally made around 1985, and according to one snippet I read, only 500 were released then. But now in 2021 they are back with a vengeance, and available for purchase at Jackson's Art, who happily ship internationally. It took two weeks for it to arrive in Melbourne, Australia, with a brief stop in Sweden according to the tracking, lol!
    So today I am going to unbox this travel palette, and take a fairly in-depth look at all of its features. What do I think of it? Is it worth the rather hefty price tag of £100? Watch to find out!
    If you would like to buy yourself one of these palette boxes for yourself, here is the link to it:
    The one I got comes without the 18 half pans: bit.ly/2Us8k1z
    It also comes with the option of 12 half pans filled with Jackson's Art paints, plus six empty half pans: bit.ly/3hDdD65
    (These are affiliate links so if you click and purchase something, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. It really helps out my channel, thank you!)

    Love your videos Becky, you’re such a sunny personality and cheer me up while watching my favourite RUclips on art! The guy who designed this box was so clever as he wanted to use it himself. I know the water pots are small but they were even designed so they didn’t spill when he was painting while on airplanes. So so clever. Hope you’re enjoying using it x

    I really really want this box but have been resisting like mad. Now I want it even more. Where palettes are concerned I think I am more a collector than anything else. I love the Fome boxes but this is very beautiful. Really I would like a handmade brass palette but they are way out of my range. This is a practical choice and will look nice even once the gorgeous glossiness has dulled. A kind of heirloom box you could use for a lifetime and then pass on.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  3 года назад

      Oh yes very much an heirloom! The handmade brass palettes had a waiting list of at least a year when I last looked, plus they're insanely expensive. The Frazer Price is a far more manageable...um...price. 😁

      Check out Santa Fe Paintbox, in the USA. The owner is super nice, the palettes are breathtaking and you do not have to wait 6+ months, although there is a wait period. I also think they are priced more reasonably than those made in the UK, and you might not have to pay VAT, not sure. Just an idea!

      @@yvonnecarpenter2957the original was $22 back in the 1980s…. Convert to $88 today. They are $200-300 because they are collector’s items

      @lindyashford7744 Месяц назад

      @@oaktharas if I want something for pure functionality then you cannot beat a light weight tin from Germany of China, made by the millions. Not everyone can spend the equivalent of several hundreds of dollars on a paint box. Personally I like traditional heavyweight boxes made by Fome in Italy, a company that has stood the test of time, and they have a range of designs which they have made for various colour en companies over the years. You can sometimes find antique boxes in very good condition. It depends on what an artist wants. If you are just a collector then you might scoff at functionality, but a basic small tin for 6 or 8 full pans is versatile enough to meet the needs of anyone needing a portable and practical palette. Larger tins more for studio use….

    Hi there. I hope you enjoy you new box. Just a few comments.
    Firstly - it costs £100 GBP. What do you get? A selection of mixing trays that are too shallow to be of any great use in the studio - you'll need a more practical palette to mix your colours. Outdoors, it would be even less practical. They would spill everywhere!
    Secondly, to include paints of the 'same assumed quality as the container', it would cost yet another ca £75 GBP. If you filled all three channels in the box, about £100 GBP.
    The W&N option gives you perfect world top quality paints for less than a quarter of the price and would be far more comfortable to hold, in the studio and certainly outdoors.
    Thirdly, no travel brushes which might cost another £25 (at least, to keep the same quality).
    Fourth - the water wells are rather small and would soon be contaminated. The plastic inserts would cost about £1-2 GBP MAX to produce.
    It is a very attractive box which must have cost at least £5-10 GBP to produce but, what is the old saying? - "All that glisters is not gold."
    Every good wish with your new treasure.
    HAPPY NEW YEAR.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 года назад

      All completely fair and practical points! Sometimes logic is defied when something which glisters is brass and I can't resist its beautiful shininess....I regret nothing!!! 😂 Happy New Year. (Oh yes, and I also have the W&N travel set - maybe I should put them up head to head to see which one reigns supreme!)

It does not change how you use it, etc, but if you want a true brass palete, made of brass, unfortunatelly those will cost 5 or 6 times more, as brass is more expensive, and for the most part, brass palettes are made by hand by craftsmen.

    Yes, the box is beautiful, but my water bottle leaked. I notified Jacksons via email 3 times. I got absolutely no response. Their customer service sucks. Another problem with the Frazer Price box is the mixing trays. They all tilt down so much that any liquid will spill out and therefore rendering them useless. I’m hoping to find a fix for this problem.

    Personally this palette has too large of a footprint for me, I don't like how it folds out as well, I mainly use small palettes for sketching and painting places I don't have the space to fold all this out, or on the go where teeny tiny pieces like this that can get lost won't work well for me
    I absolutely do not want any of this to fall between my legs and under my seat when I'm sitting on a cramped airplane and everyone is grumpy after sitting like sardines for four hours and ask the person behind me to move so I can get a tiny piece of plastic.

      Hahaha I can totally picture that scenario! 😂 I think it is going to be a palette I use in the studio or anywhere where there is a table to sit it on, because as well as being on the chunkier side, it is also so shiny and pristine and expensive so I don't trust myself not to drop it or lose it etc. Out of interest, do you have a favourite palette for travel? I'd be interested to compare a whole bunch.

      @@BeckyTregear I personally love one that I found one Etsy by the GoDraw store, it clips onto your sketchbook and folds open with magnets!
      Othereisd I personally LOVE the little Bijou box from schminke.
      Oh and I had a very lovely experience with my etchr porcelain palette on a flight, just setting it ontop of my sketchbook while I drew, and tucking it under when I didn't need it

    Who made the original, and who makes it now? Without this information, it’s impossible to distinguish genuine from counterfeit. This is nothing but an advertisement for your own social media, and someone else’s potentially fraudulent resale.

    Is your box rusty yet? Since it’s not real brass. 😂

      @@BeckyTregear lmao. Great neutral reply. Anyway, how do you like the palette now? I've not seen it in any of your videos so I'm assuming you aren't using it. Are you? Are you not? Does it stay in its cardboard box on a shelf? What's going on with the Fraser palette now? It is beautiful but I would only buy it if I had a kid who painted. Or a niece or nephew that it could be passed on to. It sure is beautiful though. If you have been using it, has it become a little less precious now that it is scratched up?

      @@phillipstroll7385 Because the nature of my channel has evolved into often trying out a wide variety of new supplies, I tend not to film the same items very often but I do try to use them off camera as much as possible. I will admit that the brass box is one of those items which I haven't used as much as other things because of its price and shininess. I am fine with that....I bought it more for collection purposes than as a complete workhorse, so it's still precious to me, haha! But I do enjoy using it in safe places like my studio or lounge. I just don't think I can quite bring myself to use it as a full travel palette outdoors. I have less precious ones for that! 😆
