Thanks for telling us this new one is plated brass. I was tempted to buy one, but this info is a deal breaker.

Jackson’s are adamant that this is solid brass .. but the solid brass has been electroplated. I think there has been a confusion with the words ‘electroplated brass’ giving the impression that a brass coating was electroplated onto a base metal, this apparently is not the case and it is solid brass.

at only $80, its a steal. its done is such a way that itrs going to last and not just chip off easily and its reduced the cost greatly at the same time, so for me this is a win\]win and I absolutley love mine. The addition of some custom made split pans to double the color capacity and. couldnt be happier with it personally, but to each their own

@@TheRaven- this is what NOBODY seems to really understand… it’s All Brass because it’s a full brass base that has then been electroplated with more Brass to give it that luxurious shine and to also prevent it from tarnishing easily over time or chilling off at all.
Anyone buying the China one is more than likely actually getting some other cheap metal that has then been coated somehow but who even knows what those cheap ones are really made with or coated in. . .
The official one is absolutely quality made and I have been LOVING mine for over 2 years now without a single issue at all. I could not be happier with it…. They will never know what they are missing I guess but as long as they are happy that’s cool.
I hope to pass mine on to someone one day

Couldn't agree more with you, an absolute gem. Form for once has not overcome function. I wanted one as soon as I saw it advertised, but couldn't justify the cost in my mind for a palette for my hobby. Fortunately, the family had other ideas and last birthday I received a very special present. It has been in almost constant use ever since. Lives in my bag along with a sketchbook and a small selection of travel brushes etc. Superb piece of kit. Hinting around the home now that a Craig Young box would be wonderful, but I can't really justify the cost. You never know, I might strike lucky a second time.

The big selling point for me of the original was that it was made in England, new one made in China?
The advertising blurb doesn't mention where it's made so it looks as though they are still made in England, at least that's what I thought and the ads should make it clear. I have lot's of things made in China that are of excellent quality so it's not the country where it's made that's the problem it's the impression that it's still made in England. Thanks very much for another great video. David.

really nice portable set. and if Winsor Newton widen the indentation of the mixing area on the plastics, I think that would make it better. This design however, with the brass finish looks beautiful.

I think that it is a good size as well if you don’t have much space on your desk for a larger palette, I’m looking forward to using mine and I have a couple of small porcelain palettes for mixing larger quantities of paint and a small container of water it doesn’t take up much room, so if space is at a premium they are ideal quite apart from being beautiful to look at lol

I had a Windsor newton field box. It was so poorly made it was unusable. The shop I got it from replaced it, but that was the same. They looked through all their stock and they all had the same faults and ended up sending the entire batch back to the wholesaler.
I then got a whiskey painters offf brand equivalent. That went rusty in about six months.
Then I got the same size tin but with no water bottle and 16 mini wells. That also went rusty.
I now have a frome teeny tin the same as whiskpainter with no water bottle and a mini portable painter. Both of these were decent quality. Finally!

    Hi there.
Just for your interest, I bought one of these boxes a few months ago, and I am over the moon with it. It doesn't make me paint any better, of course, but it's such a pleasure to have a failure; I can always admire my palette box to mollify myself! My original box arrived in a damaged state. No one to blame except maybe the 'carriers', and my box was replaced without any qualms, by the site from which I buy all my art materials. So all in all I am not complaining!
One question, if you please. Do you ever use Bristol Board? I work in all of the 'painting' mediums, and also in pen and Indian ink ( occasionally) and for this, Bristol Board was always the choice of Percy Bradshaw, way back in the 1960s.
Incidentally, I had no success in trying to become a Patreon. Seems Google wanted to 'take me over'! Cheers Smoothie. John in Brum.

New one is made of plated metal not solid brass and mine fell apart after a day or so. Apparently quite a common event. Innards are very loose and rattle around,

I mentioned in the video its brass plated and the old version was solid brass, I wish they made them like they use to, the old one has a better finish too, I can't imagine how yours fell apart, mine seems very well put together, I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem, where did it fall apart ?

I run a small art shop in Cardiff. I am very keen to find out who manufactures these. Or at least who’s selling them wholesale rather than via the usual online shops like Ken Bromley and Jacksons. Can’t seem to find anything online. Would be very grateful if you were able to help.

I got the new one, and it was nothing more than disappointment. The plastic inside feels cheap. Holding the palette, being a left-handed painter, isn't comfortable. The palette itself easily gets scratches.

    • @sarahnoda

    • @Jazzwayze

I fully empathise with left handed, folk. (It's one of the signs of genius intelligence apparently.) I am right handed, and I play guitar; (thankfully, right-handed, because left-handed guitars are much more expensive. They shouldn't be, because there is no more work involved in making them.) I play harmonica left handed because that's the way I first picked up my 'Bandmaster'. With the harmonica it doesn't matter; you just turn the instrument upside down!!! The music comes out the right way up! Anyway, i am still happy with my new 'field box', for my watercolours. All I need now is a cure for my Cellulitis, so I can walk a lot better! Thanks to Smoothie; my drawing is improving and I am going to try a detail from Benjamin Leader's 'February Fill Dyke'. If it goes well, I will go the whole hog, and try an oil on canvas. Cheers.
