      @@gmrrnracr Exactly...gardeners would cringe if plastic is used. Secondly, Crafted Workshop's version is very nice but it's decorative. If you're a gardener that wants a less expensive and more functional elevated raised bed see here: ruclips.net/video/DMORpDWq-q8/видео.html or here: ruclips.net/video/ivNw4CzLskc/видео.html

    Master Gardner, GREAT PROGRAM!!!! My dad was a primary organizer and instructor, he was a University of Idaho County Extension Educator and my mother was a "Master" Master Gardner and one of the 1st one's in our area. One suggestion for angle iron is to break down an old metal bed frame, which you can get pretty cheap at thrift stores or just find free, and you have a very inexpensive building material. Lastly, my personal recommendation is to use a higher grade weed fabric instead of plastic. But that's just me. Nice build!

    Just one tip for the metal cutting you did. When making straight cuts the blade will last 5-10x as long if you cut the angle with both ends facing down and the center/v facing up.
    Cutting the way you did I get 30-50 cuts. With the v facing up I get 100+

    Filter Fabric might have been a better option than the plastic. If you buy the right kind it will last 15+ years and is porous enough to allow proper drainage without losing any soil at all out the bottom of the box.

      @@hellensmart6601 probably not at a Joann store (never heard of this place) but a local landscape supplier or big box store like Home Depot, Lowes, and even Walmart/Target (during the season) will have it. something like www.lowes.com/pd/Hanes-Geo-Components-TerraTex-360-ft-x-15-ft-Black-Nonwoven-Geotextile/3316316
      Though it is expensive most places have rolls of the stuff and you can just get cut the amount you need.

    • @lukaszsokol2131
      @lukaszsokol2131 2 года назад

      @@zanesrg299 if you use textile not plastic it is risk that wood starts to rot. It is better use plastic as in movie, put on the bottom drain layer (expanded clay) than horizontal geotextile, and than soil.
      I have flower pots in fruit crates with geotextile, it is good solution for roots, but not so good for ceates and wood.

      Why do people always have this complaint? Just because he used a bunch of expensive tools to do it doesn't mean it is necessary it just made it easier work. It really is a simple job you don't even need an miter saw. This could be accomplished with a hand saw and a cheap drill really. Or a cheap circular saw if necessary. The pocket hole stuff isn't too pricey and it's not even a need for this job. Of course add some other basic hand tools like a hammer and some cutters. If you want any easier than this you better just go get a kit ready to assemble I guess.

      You only need a miter saw, sander, and drill. It takes a little more time without the fancy tools, but don't think you need them.
      1) The pocket hole jig is just used to save a bit of time; there are countless joints you could use instead, but the easiest here would just be to use a strip of wood to screw into.
      2) The belt grinder was just used to deburr. The most common tool for doing that is actually a simple hand file, but you can use anything from a sharping block to a literal rock.
      3) Finish nailguns in general are just time savers. They actually add no strength to wood and are just intended to hold the project together so you can keep working while the glue drys.
      4) While clamps aren't strictly required here, I would still recommend simple bar or pipe clamps. They are cheap and versatile.
      5) You can easily cut angle iron on a cheap miter saw if you swap to a metal grinding disk.
      6) You can use a basic sander to prep the metal for paint. Any sander(include hand sanding) can sand metal. I use a random orbit sander to resurface my cast iron cook ware.
      You should check out the woodworking for mere mortals series by Steve Ramsey. He teaches how to do projects using only basic tools.

    my favorite combo right there, where you combine steel and wood. Came out great. 1 question though, did you put a sealer on the cedar. if not it will loose that beautiful golden color and turn grey in a yr. I just built 2 , 30 ft cedar planters and sealed them with DEFY extreme. Id recommend a quality sealer if you want to keep them looking as nice as they do now. BTW they way your mom opened the soil bag from the bottom like a boss. we've been doing it wrong all these yrs lol.

    Too much tools to be DIY project

    • @MyBrothersMario

      What is considered a DIY project to you then? You can forgo the metal legs and be able to build this with a hand saw, and a screwdriver if you wanted to.

    • @freespam9236
      @freespam9236 5 лет назад

      Skip the metal legs: you need saw and a hammer,
      To get it better quality with less effort a handdrill and a miter box - if you have a fancy electric drill and willing to get metal legs cut in length you can add the holes your own
      To make it faster you can use tablesaw/mitersaw, nail gun, stapler ejc

      Even the metal legs aren't an issue using a $30 angle grinder and a cutting disc. If you have the tools he has, use them. If not, there are other ways to cut and drill that don't require this level of tools. It will just take you longer to accomplish.

    Simple to build? You used probably $2000 worth of equipment to build all this

      Not even close. A few hundred if you buy a chop saw.

      A decent miter saw isn't that expensive ( $200 12" Dewalt) and you can easily use a power drill to drill the holes vs. a drill press. Also, use a $30 angle grinder with cutting disc to cut through the angle iron rather than a chop saw. Even if you were to get all of this, you could still get by for about $500 at Harbor Freight.

      Just finished this. It was easy but I had to improvise a little as I didn’t have all the tools. But very easy and the results came out amazingly.

      These people love to complain about the tools but it really is a pretty basic build. Glad it worked out for you!

      @@craftedworkshop It's like people watch your videos with the sound muted and don't hear lines like "I cut this on my metal chop saw, but you could also use aluminum and an angle grinder".

    Not sure what people are complaining about with the tools. Most of them you should already own if you are going to do any wood working. You can buy a miter saw with a laser guide at Home Depot for about $300. That's the most expensive piece of equipment I saw used. This was a great video and it looks like a pretty easy project to knock out on a weekend. Definitely going to give it a try.

    This is such a good project. We have walnut trees in our yard and the falling walnuts create such an acidic soil. These boxes would prevent that. Good job, man!
