I saw the thumbnail and was like "OMG IS THAT CHRISTINE????!!!!" and go SOOOO excited! I remember first hearing her iirc singing "O Don Fatale" in a concert back in Chicago, and immediately fell in love with her artistry; so cool to see this!
Last week I went to the - Paris - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth concert. I brought my father who just LOVES classical music, it's what he has been listening to since he was young, probably because it's what his father was listening to as well ? He was surprised when he saw Orchestre Colonne would be playing with a choir (apparently the best or 2nd best french private orchestra ? Why would an orchestra with such a reputation play this ?). He also already knew and played To Zanarkand and he already heard about Nobuo Uematsu from me, but he never got deeper than that. He loved the concert, and was surprised when some cosplayer showed up. But then people went "Ooooh !" when they announced what the next piece would be and there was a standing ovation at the end, he was not expecting people to be this invested in classical music! He probably didn't think modern classical music could be this loved by young people. After that he asked me questions about the franchise, I think he might finally get into it x) I'm glad people are acknowledging how powerful the emotions and memories that are tied to this music are. By the way the concert was full, all seating taken, the room had 3.5k seats. The 2nd representation that night was full as well, so 7k+ people experienced live FF7 music that day !
One of my favorite episodes! It was really fun to hear the perspectives of essentially three different generations on the same musical piece. I think it would be really cool to do more of this kinda stuff. I know you can't do XIV on every video, it would get old fast, but I can't help but hope for some Soken bangers XD
I've heard one winged angel a number of times on this channel, but I really appreciated the orchestral piece you chose for this one. I hadn't heard it before, and it felt quite fresh to listen to. Loved their rendition of it.
I've never been a huge fan of the rendition of One Winged Angel you showed. Its not bad, but not having the higher tones for the choir really takes out a lot of unsettling feelings from the track, in addition to the whole Jenova is his "mother" and a space calamity set on destroying the world.
That's the first time I've heard this version, and it does feel somewhat lacking. For example, it doesn't have the descending bass notes right after the "Sephiroth!" lines starting at 43:58 (probably by a tuba), I had to play them in my head. But I guess it's understandable Marco doesn't want to play the same couple of versions over and over in every such video.
It was nice to get so many perspectives this time. Great choice, you tracks to play as well. I know if they had soulsborne music in a concert hall, I'd drive 4 hours to see it.
Man, you should've shown them GRIS Pt.2. GRIS is about a woman's grief after losing her mother and in the climax of the game where GRIS Pt.2 plays is when she is finally, through all the grief, is able to hear her mother's voice again and it helps her pick up all her pieces and move on. It would've been interesting to show that to these two.
This was a great video. I wholeheartedly agree with your belief in pushing for some sort of mixed programming to draw the parallels and provide the context for live performances with video game music. On that note. Perhaps you can even give some clues for those in your audience and throughout the internet, and maybe some concert hall managers, by doing some videos comparing classical/opera pieces with game music that have a good fit or might feel good together? Essentially even something like a 30 min concert that you curate and present either to a guest or just to the viewer? But I digress... This was a great interview and a fun video. ^_^
He's wearing a Warframe shirt! Speaking of which, I wish he'd shown them the Duviri Paradox or even Tenebre Rosso Sangue. Other than that though, great video as always, Marco!
marco please in any video showing music to someone you need to show Su beso de plata redux from carlos viola its a stuning song from blasphemous and is perfet to show how videogame music have the same level as music
I got the Shivers and Teary Eyes when Marco mentioned Kainé Salvation, not even put the music. Nier music makes me feel so much without even listening to it.
How can I better connect to classical music? I have the impression that this channel is, among other goals, trying to bridge the gap between modern orchestral music and an appreciation for classical music, so I have started to listen to classical music like from vivaldi or bach. I love video game music, and I resonate so strongly with some modern orchestral works like from Ryuichi Sakamoto or Hans Zimmer. However, when I listen to 19th century classical music or earlier, it doesn't ignite the same reaction in me. I feel like I'm immature in my musical tastes and not understanding what I'm listening to. What kind of mindset or perspective or actions would you recommend for me to better connect with older orchestral works?
There's no problem if you don't like or get Classical Music, not everyone likes the same, one of the main reasons OST work for you is that you link the music with the context of the game so is easier to "get it", i mean i love Black Metal and for me is like one of the best genres that is there becaus eof how versatile it can be and that you can show every emotion possible in the genre, but i undertand why people don't get it because not everyone will like it, so no worries if you don't like Classical Music, but i believe that if you can make some classical sogs tp conect with something like i dunno, this song makes you feel like when you were driving home and it was raining i belive you could enjoy more, you just need to find the correct songs.
Like any music just listen to stuff and figure out what you like, it's not a competition and it doesn't matter what other people are into if you aren't. Not that you need to count things out, maybe going back once you're more familiar will bring a new perspective. One listening "tip" I guess, try to truly listen to what is going on in each individual part. It's something you have to practice a bit, but you can do it it with any music. Also check out reverie nocturne by giulio regondi
I'll echo what the other two replies said and say that yeah, it's alright if you don't get into it. I guess the question is, what resonates with you about modern pieces by the composers you mentioned? Melodies, harmonies, instruments used, overall vibe? Those are just a few suggestions, but whatever your answer is can help you with exploring more music. Vivaldi is a great starting point in my opinion. His music is usually super energetic, fast paced, and straight to the point. Bach a little less so, he's a bit more calculated about things like melodies and how they interact with each other in a given piece, but still great of course. I assume you know this already, but classical is a genre that spans hundreds of years. There are tons of sub-genres within each century, and even within decades. Part of enjoying and understanding classical is just listening to a lot of it to find your niche. You might also find it interesting to understand the historical context behind certain pieces or time periods. VGM and movie scores have clear context, classical often does not. Have Sakamoto and Zimmer ever mentioned their classical influences? If they have, listen to what they like, and maybe even try to pick out what they liked enough to use in their own music.
I know you have a list Marco but I’d love more Halo music, and more Warhammer music from Darktide, the theme music of Space Marine 1 and 2, Children of the Omissiah. More FF 14 trial music.
I didn't think you looked like human shrek until you said so but now I can't unsee it. I started watching this channel when you showed up shaved more often so I never really thought anything of it until you said something 🤣
oh dude I really suggest you listen to some Apex Legends music, especially 2 of the original ones, like the Main Menu theme and the one called "You Are the Jumpmaster"
Day 3 of requesting Penetrator from Demon Souls Remake Also I glaze fromsoftware tracks so much so whenever u make them listen to one I get a smile on my face 😁. Unsung War is also amazing. Loved these guests!
Though I do see Ludwig at a top 5 fromsoftware OST I kinda find it repetitive at some parts. My top four tracks would be 4. Dark Souls III Main Menu 3. Twin Princes: Lothric and Lorian 2. Radahn, Consort of Miquella 1. Gehrman the First Hunter
oh god. the only thing they fear is you literally destroys my ears. as much as i feel we have common tastes in music i just can't listen to that without my ears ringing afterward. doom is just not a pleasant experience lol. brb going to listen to the liyue soundtrack to reset my ears

I would love to see marco interview Ellen McLain (GLaDOS voice actress) since she has a background on opera, that could be a cool video honestly.
Great idea

Incredible
You need to have them on again, they are great. And you need to show them dancing mad.
One of my favorite episodes! It was really fun to hear the perspectives of essentially three different generations on the same musical piece. I think it would be really cool to do more of this kinda stuff.

The official shadow of the erdtree OST was released and I can’t beliebe how much better it sounds
This is such a wholesome one, from the mix of genuine excitement and genuine mom-barrassment.
ok I have to say that the ad is very on point like it fits very well with marco to the point that it doesn't feel like an ad at all.
That’s awesome thank you I really like manscaped and I have used their stuff for like a year now.
I LOVE Christine Goerke, and this video is EVERYTHING.

If you wanna hear a fun rendition of One winged Angel, someone on RUclips here did a cover in the style of Doom. It's a good one imo

oh hey. I sang in the Carmina Burana in a 200 man choir in college. Awesome experience.
I got the Shivers and Teary Eyes when Marco mentioned Kainé Salvation, not even put the music. Nier music makes me feel so much without even listening to it.
Yay Christine and Maggie! Love this, my dears!
Patiently waiting to see Midra the lord of frenzied flame on the chapter list

Hey Marco, currently crying after reading the lyrics to some of the Arcane season 2 soundtrack(im a softie). Any chance we'll see you listen to those?
It's awesome of Mick Gordon to give everyone that purchases his albums a free game, it's a shame that Bethesda screwed him over.
