  • Bozeman, Montana: After 4 days of elk hunting in the Sweetgrass Hills of Montana, Steven Rinella talks with Ryan Callaghan, Janis Putelis and first time hunters Brittany Brothers and Helen Cho. Subjects discussed include: good hunts for first time hunters; searching for hearts and livers in gut piles left by other hunters; hunter's safety courses; what happens when you carry a New Yorker magazine, an Alaska driver’s license, and a pocket knife on a NYC subway; how to say "MeatEater Podcast" in Latvian; the fact that Janis Putelis, a.k.a. Long Tong, has been in on 100 elk kills; women hunters; the conundrum of hunter recruitment; and getting really depressed when a hunt goes bad.

Thank you for bringing intellectuality, science, and awareness into hunting and fishing. You know how Neil deGrasse Tyson makes science cool? Well you and your crew do that for hunting. Keep putting these podcasts out, they're awesome. Its refreshing to hear people just shoot the shit about the outdoors.

Watching MeatEater 🥩 at night on Netflix and catching up with these at work. I love this! Keep them up and extend to 3 hours as Mr. Rogan has suggested. These provide entertainment wonders for all hunters! Thanks!

Love that this new hunter Helen, refused to take a shot until she was certain it was a clean shot. Even at the risk of getting nothing.

I love this podcast and the show. Hunting has been a way of life since I can remember and I was fortunate enough to be raised and taught to respect game and their environment. I have to say seeing these two exceptional ladies hunting has given good reason to think there truly is someone for everybody. I need a hunting partner for a wife!!! Great to see anyone being introduced to hunting with some genuinely ethical instruction. Again, I'm a huge fan

It's funny to hear your NYC knife story. I carried a Zero Tolerance knife for a week, riding the subway every day. The last day I happened to notice an article on the front of a local paper about knives, so I grabbed one and read it in on the way back to the hotel. I don't remember exactly what the article said, but I'm certainly glad I didn't get caught carrying that knife...the same one I carry every other day and everywhere else, without incident.

I think what you decide for a first hunt really depends on age of the hunter as well. It is a lot easier to keep a child's attention bird hunting then it is big game hunting.

You were Hunting in the Sweetgrass hills. And the guy that dropped a chilupa while you watched was more than likely from Shelby.
