I totally understand and agree about the environment and people in Ontario. Good lifestyle choice to move to Calgary. I lived in Ottawa. Now most of my family live in Calgary.
Calgary is the best city in my opinion and I would move there in a heartbeat.
We moved to Calgary from north western Ontario and we had a ton of nature and wildlife which was really nice, but our winters were so harsh in our neck of the woods! Between the housing markets and high taxes we don’t think we’ll ever move back there!

Kinda had the same experience but only in GTA though. Ottawa, Guelph and Hamilton were much less hustle. Glad for you that you found your place in Calgary!

Provincial Sales Tax in Alberta is 5% (Ontario - 13%), you are correct, however, this is the Sales Tax, when it comes to Income Tax, Ontario Tax is lower for those in the bracket $45,142 up to $90,287 (9.15%), whereas in Alberta it is a flat 10% for the earning up to $131,220.
🙂I came looking for this video…I moved from Ontario to Calgary 7yrs ago and only moved back to Ontario due to family illness. I’ve been looking to move back to Calgary because I truly enjoyed my time there…very different quality of life in Calgary. Thanks for posting these videos…makes me want to move back sooner than planned. ☺️

Great video me and my young family plan to move to Alberta most likely Edmonton. I still go thru days of going back and forth in my mind about to staying here, so much development going on here would miss it all. But looking at videos like yours encourages to stay locked in and think about the bigger picture. It’s sux a place like London Ontario is so expensive. It’s such a beautiful city I wanted to move there a couple years ago but my god it’s outrageously unaffordable now

There are quite a few things more expensive here like groceries, utilities, vet bills and car repairs. Because of the cold weather, car maintenace like transmission flush is every 2 years, instead of every 5 years and the dealership charges $185 per hour for labor. The potholes are so bad here, plan on at least 3 alignments per year. X-rays for my dog was $500 and I paid $100 in London. There's no great escape to Albrrrrta, it comes with its challenges.
It's very interesting to hear how people think about Alberta and Ontario. I moved to Edmonton 8 months ago with 3 of my children and 5 grandchildren. I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT here and am planning my great escape back to London, Ontario! These are some of my top reasons:
Nobody talks about how cold it is here. I realize Calgary gets the schnooks, so I'm speaking about Edmonton. December was -35, windchill -42, colder than Achorage Alaska and Nunavut! The air is so dry, our lips are chapped, we have to use Vaseline after every shower and my grandchildren got nosebleeds. Edmonton has actual "frostbite clinics" it's so common. They do not salt the roads (because they say salt doesn't work at these temperatures), so in Edmonton, we had all the roads covered with thick ice and huge potholes. They throw gravel down which doesn't help at all, just makes your car muddy. Don't forget about having to plug your car in to keep it from freezing, except the cars in Ontario do NOT have motor heaters. Look at spending mega $$$$ to keep your car maintained here (alignments, replace your windshield and battery). I met someone from Ontario whose transmission actually froze.
Houses and rents are cheaper, yes, but food is outrageous because "good things grow in Ontario". Car insurance is way more expensive here (likely due to the crazy number of bad accidents on the icy roads).
Summer was nice (no humidity) when it finally got here but was EXTREMELY short. No Spring. Winters are extremely LONG. There was no Fall colors. I miss the beautiful maple leafs turning red. Only green to yellow then brown here. No beaches nearby and when we drove 3 hours to one, there was foaming pollution there. In London, Ontario, you can drive under one hour to Port Stanley, Grand Bend or Ipperwash. If you love birds, you will miss the array of birds Ontario has. There are mainly magpies here. I seen only a few Blue Jays and one cardinal. Just as Ontario is not for everybody, Alberta is not for everyone either, especially if you do not like the cold and Winter sports. Be prepared to spend extra money on Winter clothing that says it's for -30.
Also, Alberta landlords charge extra on rent for dogs, usually $50 per month...that's a lot! Also, no rent controls after one year...they can raise the rent to whatever they want. I've heard Calgary landlords are not children and pet friendly. There's a lot of videos on moving here...just remember, there's good and bad everywhere and all that glitters is not gold.
Before I end this convo, I must say the people are EXTREMELY FRIENDLY here.
Thanks for sharing your experience! Every place has its pros and cons that's forsure. I would say Alberta is more for people that are more outdoorsy that includes winter and summer. Edmonton however is quite different from Calgary and a lot of people that are from there hate it there and love Calgary. It does get cold there and is definitely the number one con to the province. It takes time to get used to and that's if you ever end up getting used to it. Everyone experiences things differently. I appreciate you sharing :)
Great video! Just came across your channel today via my RUclips Calgary search. I have only lived in Ontario in Canada for more than a decade now but I was raised in a small city in Africa so I love nature and prefer a slower pace of life. I have lived in Ottawa, London and Toronto so far but Toronto is getting more expensive each day… The most close-minded people I came across were when I lived in Ottawa 🙄 just my personal experience but I met amazing people as well. London was great but I couldn’t find any decent single people within my age group (late 20s) and I have never been on the club scene. I love how Toronto
has a diverse population and tons of fun events (most are not free though). Thanks for sharing 😊

I still technically live in Ontario but i work in Fort McMurray AB. I'm hoping to sell there next year and relocate my primary home to Edmonton area. The only negative is the weather. Love Alberta
Have to agree. I was thinking of transferring back to Ontario for work, but honestly I'm happy I'm staying here instead. Just an easier lifestyle to maneuver here versus the GTA or Ottawa.

Interesting, I watched your other video abt reasons not to move to Calgary and I spent an hour thinking do I really want to move from GTA to harsher winters? But then I watched this video and it reminded me the reason why I am looking for a change. It's great to know that Albertans are less materialistic.
The winters are dependent, we had less snow then Ontario last year but it was cooler here in temperature.

I'm living in TO, ON similar situation to you living at home with my folks. I definitely understand how you feel about the people here. It seems like everyone is just working to pay for bills here and keeping up the Joneses, I am considering moving and anytime I talk about leaving or going somewhere else most people here say there is nowhere else in Canada and Toronto is the only option.
I wouldn't say that that is the only place to live but to be honest, I feel like most places now are very applicable in costs since everything is rising. Its really unfortunate and its making people want to leave the country and live elsewhere for better cost of living and I guess quality of life! I was living on my own in Calgary for 2 years and I was doing ok but I had to come back for my family because there was illness and now seems impossible to go back since the inflation and rising rent costs which is more like Toronto costs.
Yes! In the GTA a lot of younger people are very materialistic!

Do you feel more connection to people in Alberta? I have a feeling, that I don't have too many friends in Ontario being an expat because like you said, 90% people are so engrossed in their lives and I feel like it's something to do with the type of people.
I'm hoping to move somewhere that helps me build a community and not have to chase them for basics of reciprocation of friendship or relationships.
What are your thoughts? :)
I find the older I get the harder it is to make new friends and connections. It just depends if you come across someone you make a connection with. (This can be anywhere) It can be similar here but people I find are a little more open especially if you have a hobby in common and willing to invite you to things if you have a similar interest! Also a lot of people are looking for friends aswell, I would suggest the Calgary girls group on Facebook or Instagram. ☺️

Get winter tires, have a block heater on your vehicle and always have extra windshield fluid in your car haha. Thats if you have a vehicle, the advice I would give is that you should give it a chance, every change in life is complex and definitely challenging at the beginning, there will be things that you like and really dislike and you will usually compare it to the last place or the (comfort) place you have lived for however long. There will be phases where you will want to go back etc... But I would say explore the city and see what it has to offer and see if you enjoy it. Try new things that you haven't done before and you will find if its a place for you or not. For myself, I really love the outdoors and being with nature so I found that Calgary is a great spot for me and has that to offer. Not a fan of the winters but the summers really shine there. The city also has helped me grow as a person and learn new things, so time was never wasted. Hope your family has a safe move if they decide to move there!

Sales tax 5% rather then Ontario at 13%
Then actual tax deductions it’s better to look it up on the actual gov site but you pay less provincial taxes. Hope this helps
i'm from ontario thinking about a move out west. totally agree with your pov on the people, materialistic things, and lack of outdoor activities. Can you talk about making friends in calgary?
I organically made friends by just being out and at my apartment building but there are lots of groups on Facebook that allow people/groups to connect! Lots of hiking groups and different outdoor sport groups on there too ☺️ a lot of people that relocate there are sort of all in the same boat so most people are open to friendships and meeting new people! Hope this helps!
I;m really struggling with this decision. I don't really understand the cost benefit. I looked on rental websites and for 1bdr calgary is about $1,200 starting and for Toronto its $1,400. So okay its cheaper but for $200? Well I guess the apartments do seem nicer. The weather is so much worse in winter, okay just look at this weeks weather its going to be -20 and -23 at the start of November compared to Torontos averaging around like 12 high and 7 low this week. It get that cold in Toronto like once or twice a year. Also calgary has short summers and they seem pretty cold, the highest average is just 23 in July.
It also seems like a giant suburb, unlike toronto, montreal, and even vancouver. They have some good density and then more open space as you move away from the dense areas. Calgary seems to empty, and the public transit seems bad.
However I do like the no sales tax, cheaper homes when it comes time for me to buy, the nature, the mountains, the skiing. I feel there is something called Toronto syndrome where you get stuck here and feeling of its worse everywhere else in Canada

Yes its definitely understandable why its hard for you and what you have experienced. Moving somewhere new isn't easy and literally one place can have this pro and another can have a con. It really depends on you as a person and if you want to experience something new, I always look at it as you can always go back if you want and I find that new things create new experiences and lessons. This video I find now is a little outdated in some way since rent prices are sky rocketing and not much off from the market elsewhere since everyone is moving here.
I would say it comes down to lifestyle and what you cherish the most in the end. If you are a die hard skier, hiker, outdoorsy person and would be in the mountains more then twice a month it might be suitable for you. There are some downfalls to living here and it can also get depressing for having short summers.

I’m still in this dilemma. Summer is SO IMPORTANT to me. I don’t deny the issues in Ontario (worsening as we speak) but I’m still dreaming about going back. Currently in Grande Prairie right now and won’t be able to truly try Calgary until end of the month. I’ll give it a chance…. Weather became cold for one week here and I got sick. In July.
I've lived in Ontario all my life, and just assumed flex culture and materialism was everywhere. It's nice to know that it isn't like that in Calgary. This video really resonated with me, thank you!
There will definitely always be people like that but I find it’s way less here then most places. I find everyone’s really into their hobbies like skiing, snow boarding, hiking,biking, kayaking, etc! Also it depends who you associate with aswell but thanks for your support and watching the video ☺️
I’m currently living in Ontario and these people can be rude, fake and stuck up and I’ve always lived in a good reputable area (Vaughan) but I’m nothing like them (thank God) for the most part I find them unfriendly, self-centred and miserable. When they say Canadians are so friendly and kind I was confused because here in Ontario it’s not like that for the most part. Moving to Alberta and can’t wait!
Yeah I find it really depends what areas youre in and who you really spend time with! But a lot of people unfortunately have those traits :( Most people are actually miserable (working jobs like dont like, etc etc etc) but doesnt mean they should be mean or fake!

I dont know whether it true all the people. Places where I worked and live I found many and interesting people. Few nasties as well. However If someone feels that you dont belong to certain area then they definetely should move. There are many people moved from Alberta toronto as well. I know now with good oil prices everything is good there. I remeber there was time Alberta had serious economic issues. I have been to Calgary. I dont find it very apealing. I do like the Rockies. If I feel like I will not moved to Alberta may be to BC.

My Neighbors here in Edmonton Sold their beautiful 4 bedroom split level home home with giant yard hot tub double attached garage in a Day to a family from Toronto. Put the sign up next day Toronto family made their 1st offer for $15k above listening. Was listed for $360k they just straight up bam! $375 first day it was listed. We don't do that here. We try and haggle down! Lol this kinda stuff is how Ontario got in so much trouble. If your coming, just pay the asking price. Lol
I think almost everyone in their early 20's was influenced by the media or the type of music you listen too, or artist.. in my highschool years n early 20's. Tommy, nautica, polo sport, southpole from stiches was the Sh!t. Then phatfarm, fubu, ecko, karl kani, sean john. G unit. ( clearly you would know the type of music I was listening too) Nowadays, i buy clothes at Costco, winners, even giant tiger. LOL!!!
Costco has amazing clothes, also a one stop shop LOL! Amazing, yes a lot of people are so influenced by media its actually crazy

It really sounds like you are from the Toronto region and using Ontario as if that is Toronto and comparing it to Calgary. Toronto is it’s own unique environment and it certainly is not for everyone.
As I’ve mentioned in the video as it can be everywhere and apply to many different people wether there from Ontario or not. I’m actually not from the GTA area

Toronto is definitely it's own unique environment... but buying a house anywhere in ontario is hilariously priced compared to alberta... looked everywhere from southern ontario to manitoulin island and Sioux lookout.... pay a million in ontario or a quarter or half of that to get 20 times as much...

its not for everyone but its for others lol.
Not only is Ontario the most expensive province to own real estate and start a business, but also a very narcissistic & anti-social province.
