In my honest opinion the Self titled debut of Asia, Abacab, Duke and the 1983 self titled record by Genesis and also 90125 by Yes are all prime examples of Prog / Pop fusion perfection! Deceptively simple music with pop hooks and the ever so pleasant instrumental dexterity.
I agree. Growing up around R&B, Funk, and Disco mostly, I didn't get to know Rock except for radio and TV shows. Also going to Black elementary and middle schools, rock music wasn't played. Splashes of it with artists that just were played everywhere like Elton John, Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band. Playing sax helped widen my music knowledge. Anything with a sax on it. And a predominantly white HS led to learning what each other was listening to. Queen's Another One Bites the Dust and KISS started the shift. MTV was crucial. That's what really did it. I saw the video for Heat Of The Moment. I started reading music reference books. It had music maps on the origin and evolution of bands. Through Asia I learned about YES, King Crimson and other progressive and jazz rock fusion bands.
This is my top ten of Asia: 1.- The Smile has left your eyes 2.- Daylight 3.- Midnight sun 4.- The last to Know 5.- Eye to Eye 6.- Sole survivor 7.- Cutting it fine 8.- Open your eyes 9- Only time will tell 10.- Heat of the moment
Francisco Castro Mayora wow, you really like the Alpha album. That’s cool. It’s the original line up. The only thing about that album is that it’s too mellow.
My top ten Asia songs 1. Countdown To Zero 2. Go 3. Too Late 4. Rock And Roll Dream 5. Eye To Eye 6. Wildest Dreams 7. Heat Of The Moment 8. Don't Cry 9. I know How You Feel (Midnight Mix) 10. Kari-Anne
Yeah, you nailed it Pete, quite a forgettable band unfortunately, despite their linage and HUGE catalogue, not that I have heard it all.. It is kind of hard to believe that they were at first touted to be the "New YES"! I Love Heat of the moment and Go..
So many gems, it is tough to choose. My top ten.... Ride Easy (b-side) Time Again (s/t) Without You (s/t) Daylight (b-side) Open Your Eyes (Alpha) Voice of America (Astra) Days Like These (Then & Now) Never Again (Phoenix) I Believe (Omega) Face On The Bridge (xxx) Great band....rock solid albums, IMO.
Aside from the first album, my favorite of all was Aqua. The first two songs, Aqua part 1 and Who Will Stop the Rain are magic. Best thing Geoff Downes ever did was bring in John Payne.
Alpha is a GREAT pop album. It’s sort of my guilty pleasure. Loaded with great hooks. To me, it’s all about expectations. If you look at that lineup and are expecting anything proggy,, you may be disappointed. But I can’t deny that they wrote some really good songs for this one.
They did write proggy stuff. It just depends from album to album. And even if it's not proggy it's still pop-rock not just pop. Ppl use the word pop too loosely most of the time. It would have to be really light and soft and almost bubblegumy to be called JUST pop. It was always the case of pop-rock when it comes to Asia. They always had the rock sound to put a bit of edge on the pop and cut away some of the softness. Ofc the pop part had it's purpose as well. And then you get the prog elements into it and it sounds fucking brilliant and original
From the Alpha album, for me, it's always been, "My Own Time (Do What I Want)". I went out to mow a lawn for the sole purpose of buying that album. And that song was worth every penny spent. I'd probably put "My Own Time" in my Top 3 this week. Next week it might get pushed to #1, depends on the mood of the day. "Go" from Astra is still an all-time favorite. Kinda love the video, too. And "Never Again" was a home run comeback song. Even though it was a new song, it sounded familiar and took me back to the short years I loved Asia. Great countdown that I never expected to see. Awesome.
Yep, that first album! Stand out track for me is “Without You” amazing guitar solo. Also like to mention “The smile has left your Eyes” from Alpha. Soft spot for that one especially after seeing John Wetton performing a basic acoustic version of the song live. Beautiful.
For me the lower half of Alpha is my favorite the first half has some good songs, but not that memorable. I love The Heat Goes On, Eye To Eye, The Last To Know, True Colors, Open Your Eyes, Midnight Sun is ok
1. Heat Of The Moment 2. Only Time Will Tell 3. Don't Cry 4. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 5. Sole Survivor 6. Wildest Dreams 7. Days Like These 8. Without You 9. Here Comes The Feeling 10. Go Great Songs, Catchy Stuff.
My ASIA Top 10 is chock full of cuts from their debut. Just a magical album. All members firing on all cylinders, especially John Wetton's vocals. Legend. 10. Don't Cry 9. Without You 8. Open Your Eyes 7. Go 6. Wildest Dreams 5. Heat Of The Moment 4. Sole Survivor 3. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 2. Here Comes The Feeling 1. Only Time Will Tell

Don't Cry is my favorite for some reason. Catchy as hell. I would say, however, that Heat of the Moment is probably their finest moment. I also like Sole Survivor and Wildest Dreams.

Who will stop the rain from the Aqua album is without a doubt my favorite Asia song. Honestly, I think Aqua is also my favorite album by them too. Although still can’t deny the greatness of that debut.
I don't think he likes a lot of the albums that came out after Bark at the Moon. He may not have even heard all the 90s, 00s and 10s albums. I'm pretty sure he hasn't heard the new one yet.
That first 1982 album - to me - just my opinion- is @ perfect 👌 example of “ @ SUPERGROUP “ just completely dominating and 💯 % defining what a Supergroup is capable of achieving!!
1- Only Time Will Tell 2- Sole Survivor 3- Time Again 4- My own time 5- Here's Come the Feeling 6- Heat of a Moment 7- Who Will stop the Raim 8- Alibis 9- The Smile has left your Your Eyes 10- Don't Cry

I love so much about Asia, and yes, the first album was a lot of five stars. I started on the second album and the one song that sold me on Asia and still brings me to tears is John Wetton as he holds that note out in sorrow on "the Last to Know". That ability to hold that note out with such strength completely showed to me the talent of Wetton as a vocalist. For a moment, though happily married I allow myself to remember when I first heard this song after a betrayal while dating in high school 35 years before. Yes I relive the memory, the anger, the crying because this song takes me back. The song ends as I return to the present, I wipe away my tears, I get a good laugh, and thank God for how things turned out. And then I say "man that was a damn good song." :P
My Top 10 ASIA songs 1. Heat of the Moment (Asia) 2. Finger on the Trigger (Omega) 3. Here Comes The Feeling (Asia) 4. Days Like These (Then & Now) 5. Face On The Bridge (XXX) 6. Never In A Million Years (Alpha) 7. Till We Meet Again (Gravitas) 8. Only Time Will Tell (Asia) 9. I Believe (Omega) 10. Midnight Sun (Alpha) Honorable Mentions: - Lay Down Your Arms (Aqua) - Holy War (Omega) - Heroine (Phoenix)
I'm a big fan of the last two Asia albums and I love Valkyrie off of Gravitas. John Wetton's voice was amazing on that one! I bought the debut on vinyl in '82. I loved it from the word go. Alpha? Eh, not so much. Most of the rest of the catalog I feel the same way you do but, I probably have a few more songs I enjoy from the John Payne era than you do. Give a listen to Valkyrie. Great song. RIP John. You are missed. I'm into the Icon albums Geoff and John did too.
@@RussDRocker Tomorrow The World, Faithfull, Face On The Bridge, Judas, Ghost of a Chance. I like all of the other songs too but, not as much as these five. The album has a manic energy to most of the material and anytime John belts out a line it's a highlight. This wasn't there best album but, I got into a tradition about fifteen years ago where I listen to Asia during my vacations. I have spun all of their albums many times throughout this "tradition" and have grown to like most of their material.
Huge Asia fan! These are my top ten picks... 1) Sole Survivor 2) Heat of the Moment 3) The Heat Goes On 4) Ready to Go Home 5) Countdown to Zero 6) Days Like These 7) Who Will Stop the Rain 8) Never Again 9) Bury Me in Willow 10) Here Comes the Feeling
1. Voice Of America 2. Sole Survivor 3. Go 4. Don't Cry 5. Heat Of The Moment 6. Only Time Will Tell 7. True Colors 8. Open Your Eyes 9. Too Late 10. Cutting It Fine
Great list Pete. Here is mine: 1. Time Again 2. The Heat Goes On 3. Cutting It Fine 4. Sole Survivor 5. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 6. Go 7. Only Time Will Tell 8.Heat of the Moment 9. True Colors 10. Wildest Dreams
Those first two records mean a lot to me. A couple of the later ones have some good tracks, too. I like their prog tracks and pop tracks equally. So: 10) Bury Me In Willow (tied with:) 10) Go 9) Never Again 8) Wildest Dreams 7) Soul Survivor 6) Heat Of The Moment 5) Don't Cry 4) The Heat Goes On 3) The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 2) Voice Of America 1) Only Time Will Tell (One of my favorite singles of the decade) Thanks, Pete!
I believe Astra is an underrated album that deserves some attention. Anyway here's my top 10 1. Voice of America (heard this at an Ann Arbor Kroger Feb 2017 and loved the chorus 2. Rock and Roll Dream 3. Wildest Dreams 4. Suspicion 5. The Smile has Left Your Eyes 6. The Heat has Gone 7. Heat of the Moment 8. Go (a good arena rocker) 9. Phoenix 10. True Colors 2.
I think Steve Howe was partly underrated in this band, I love the songs he wrote for Asia. But there are also a few good tracks from the John Payne period. 1. Only time will tell 2. Don't cry 3. Go 4. Through my veins 5. Open your eyes 6. The heat goes on 7. Anytime 8. Who will stop the rain 9. Heat of the moment 10. Arena
I remember how huge that first album was. Still love it. I have time for the second album. I did lose track of them after Astra though. I actually met John Payne briefly recently. Seems like a nice guy.
My top 10, put it together quickly this morning ... 10 - Without You 9 - Cutting it Fine 8 - Wildest Dreams 7 - Heat of the Moment 6 - Don't Cry 5 - Days like These 4 - Go 3 - Time Again 2 - Only Time Will Tell 1 - Sole Survivor
My TOP 10: 1. Wildest Dreams 2. Open Your Eyes 3. Desire 4. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 5. Anytime 6. Never Again 7. Without You 8. Don't Cry 9. Sad Situation 10. Cutting It Fine Well, the first two albums and "Aria" are obviously my favorites from them. "Aqua" has few good songs but none of them is in my TOP 10.
Thank you for the list, so will you rank the albums in the future? Is that how you typically do these videos by doing the Top 10 songs of certain bands and then in the near future you do the ranking of their studio discography? 10. Days Like These 9. Valkyrie 8. Lay Down Your Arms 7. Anytime 8. Hard On Me 7. Voice of America 6. Go 5. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes 4. Don't Cry 3. Only Time Will Tell 2. One Step Closer 1. Heat of the Moment
Extraordinary Life is a fantastic song... Otherwise my top ten would include all of the first album, open your eyes and that's pretty much it for me...
I’m in the minority and like all the Asia albums. 1. The smile has left your eyes. 2. Valkyrie. 3. Only time will tell. 4. Feels like love. 5. Too late
My favorites: #1: Heat Of The Moment (Asia) #2: Voice Of America (Astra) #3: Don't Cry (Alpha) #4: Wildest Dreams (Asia) #5: Only Time Will Tell (Asia) #6: The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (Alpha) #7: Summer (Can't Last Too Long) (Then & Now) #8: True Colors (Alpha) #9: The Heat Goes On (Alpha) #10: Time Again (Asia) I don't have any studio album later than Astra.
For my favorite song in each album: Asia (Cutting It Fine) Alpha (The Smile has left your eyes) Astra (Go) Aqua (Who Can Stop The Rain) Aria (Don't Cut the Wire) Arena (The Day Before the War) Silent Nation (Blue Moon Monday) Aura (Under the Gun) Phoenix (Parallel Worlds) Omega (Finger on the Trigger) XXX (No Religion) Gravitas (Nyctophobia)
The thing is, it´s like two diffrent bands - like some of these later ones, have seen them on the silent nation tour, but It´s hard to compare ... Alpha was produced too symphonik I think, it sonds too soft, acually liked the phoenix comeback more, had high hopes for the next omega was okay but thought the rest was terrible. Actually theire big hit´s for me are just okay... Not in my Top 10+ 5 List 01.Cutting it Fine - ASIA 02.Only Time Will Tell - ASIA 03.Go - ASTRA 04.The Smile Has Left Your Eyes -Alpha 05.Don´t Cut The Wire - Aria 06.On The Coldest Day In Hell -Aura 07.Wildest Dreams - ASIA 08.Open Your Eyes -Alpha 09.Finger On The Trigger - Omega 10.A Far Cry - Aqua 11.Desire - Aria 12.Awake - Aura 13.Gone Too Far - Sielnt Nation 14.Rock And Roll Dream -ASTRA 15.Never Again - Phoenix
1-Go 2 -Desire 3 - Only Time Will Tell 4 - Who Will Stop The Rain 5 - Don't Cry 6 - Heat of the Moment 7 - Summer 8 - Sole Survivor 9 - The Heat goes On 10 - Cutting it Fine
My Top 10 Asia songs . . . 1. Sole Survivor 2. Heat of the Moment 3. Time Again 4. Only Time Will Tell 5. Days Like These 6. Wildest Dreams 7. Go 8. Who Will Stop the Rain? 9. Awake 10.Ghost in the Mirror
A big fan of Asia. When Asia's debut hit the shelves I thought it was incredible...& it still is......but a little burned out for me So my top 10 are: 1) Too Late 2) Summer (Can't Last Too Long) 3) Without You 4) Cutting It Fine 5) Wildest Dreams 6) Daylight 7) Never In A Million Years 8) Midnight Sun 9) Here Comes The Feeling 10) Sole Survivor
Cheri Edwards I really agree with u U are a real Asia fan I am guilty I like almost every Asia song They are all different Danny Word and music Borderline delusion band ruclips.net/p/PLtj_90xCmJuxo6RJTex4Tg_JuhlnZtvrE
Asia is fucking brilliant. I wouldn't even say their 1st album is the best. One of, definitely. Arena, Astra, Aqua are fenomenal. All their albums are awesome (except Rare). Some better, some weaker, but those 3 + debut are my favorite. I wouldn't say there's too much pop. I would say they had a perfect blend of 80's pop, rock and prog. Listen to before the war from Arena. Imo the John Payne albums are as good as the Whetton albums
I love Asia and not only the first 3 albums, which are the best ones for me as well. Lot's of pretty good songs all through their catalogue like you said in your show, but not complete great albums. I do like "Aqua" a lot though and Aura is a very solid album for me as well. All together a band I like to listen to a lot still till this day and I do own all their studio albums.
I'm a huge Asia fan. I have all of their albums on CD except for Alpha. Not because I don't like it I just never got around to getting it. I have seen both versions of the band live. I saw original Asia in Dallas, TX on the Phoenix tour and I saw Asia Featuring John Payne in College Station, TX. I got to meet John Payne at that show. He signed my Silent Nation CD/DVD and I got a picture with him. He was a very nice guy. The John Payne era albums really took a lot of listens to really love them. My second favorite Asia album is Silent Nation while my number 1 favorite is of course Asia. My favorite Wetton Asia song is Too Late and my favorite Payne era song is Who Will Stop The Rain. Hardcore Asia fan for life.
Only Time Will Tell is my all time favorite song, period. I was fortunate to see the original lineup in concert. Asia is my favorite band and I enjoyed their reunion albums quite a bit.
Interesting choise. I agree with you on the most of them. Sole survivor!!! Yeah!! Great!! - Midnight sun from Alpha is an underrated song with a nice mood. Go from Astra is for me a little bit too primitive. I prefer Voice of America. Mandy Meyer wasn't bad. A few years later they got Pat Thrall in the Band (only on stage). He was unsuitable for Asia. In my opinion the Omega Album has some nice tunes. Most of them were played live in 2010. Sounded very well.
In 1983 I was 14 years old and a big fan of Yes. One day it was announced that a school band would be making its debut later that week, the guitarist playing my snazzy red Fender Bullet (ON LOAN ONLY!) The drummer was Dylan Howe, who I was stunned to learn was son of Steve. Having been warned that the great man would be in attendance, I brought along my vinyl copy of ‘Close to the Edge’. After the band finished I clocked Mr Howe and apparently approached him like a big, squealing girl. He signed my record and told me he was amazed that someone my age gave a toss about his former band (amazing to think that now, when he’s had another 30+ years of teenage kids getting into Yes). I asked him how it was going in Asia, trying to be as nonchalant and cool as possible (and failing miserably). “Bunch of c**ts!” he replied.
Patrick Crowther That’s a hilarious anecdote, thanks for sharing! Steve Howe’s guitar contributions are undeniably transcendent on the debut album. However having said that, I side with John Wetton over the unfortunate interpersonal squabbling. The band was set up by legendary A&R man John Kalodner as a vehicle for Wetton’s underused and under appreciated vocal talents-my all-time fav vocalist. Asia was his band and rightfully so. There are some ingredients to classic bands that simply cannot be replaced. And my opinion is that Asia missed a great opportunity during the Astra recording sessions to hire Trevor Horn as producer instead of Geoff Downes, and bring in Steve Hackett instead of Mandy Meyer. When Wetton passed away in 2017, Steve Hackett tweeted that he loved him like a brother.
1. Heat of the Moment 2. Days Like These 3. Sole Survivor 4. Don't Cry 5. Only Time Will Tell 6. Wildest Dreams 7. Go 8. Open Your eyes 9. The Heat Goes On 10. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes
10. Cutting it Fine 9. Never in a Million Years 8. Rock and Roll Dream 7. Voice of America 6. Don't Cry 5. Here Comes the Feeling 4. Time Again 3. Heat of the Moment 2. True Colors 1. Wildest Dreams
Asia has a very obscure, gorgeous tune called Under The Gun. I think it's just a bonus track, and I think just Geoff Downes from the original lineup is on it. A lovely tune that I think a lot of people haven't heard.
As a fan of Asia I pretty much agree great 1st alum and good 2nd, and a lot of good material throughout. Here Comes The Feeling always was a favorite and a tune from one of later albums Through My Veins would make my Top 10 list along with most of your selections My Own Time from Alpha another great tune. Big John Wetton fan enjoy your commentary on videos and bands. 1st Asia album would be my gateway into progressive rock like King Crimson, UK, Yes, still a great album, kind of like Boston "Blowing thier wad" with a great 1st album.
1. GO 2. Without You 3. Heat Of The Moment 4. Sole Survivor 5. Time Again 6. Wildest Dreams 7. Cutting It Fine 8. The Heat Goes On 9. Open Your Eyes 10. An Extraordinary Life
Of course the first three albums are the best, but there are also some other gems like the title song Arena from the Payne era and Tomorrow the World and Face on the Bridge from XXX. They are very beautiful and memorable songs.
What follows is my personal opinion of Asia. My list is a mosaic list across virtually everything up to "Aura". For the record my favorite five albums up through this era are, in order, are: 1. Asia 2. Alpha 3. Aqua 4. Arena 5. Aura I am a fan of some of the later Wetton era albums, but I had to stop the list somewhere, and the stronger material for Asia is at the front end. The problem with the latter two is there's a lot of filler. So much of it is so poppy I thought I was listening to soft rock. On the other hand the John Payne era had some really good ballads, and some of these made the list. I limited it to twenty. 20: After the War 19: Countdown to Zero 18: Awake 17: Anytime 16. Don't Cut the Wire (Brother) 15. Summer 14. Military Man 13. Don't Cry 12: Free 11. Crime of the Heart 10. Heaven 9. Ready to Come Home 8. Who'll Stop the Rain 7. The Day Before the War 6. Arena 5. Midnight Sun 4. Never in a Million Years 3. Without You 2. One Step Closer 1. Sole Survivor Why are "Heat of the Moment", "Open Your Eyes", "My Own Time" and "Heat Goes On" missing? I love these first few albums dearly, but I wanted to give the Payne era a little love. Finding them was a serious chore, though. To find the gems I had to click through the catalog and throw out the bits that are chaff. There are more rockers in "Aqua" but the remaining albums get poppier beginning with "Aria". After "Aura" I lost all interest until Wetton returned. Even then the magic was gone.
I always liked "Who Will Stop the Rain" from the Aqua album. Probably my favorite from the John Payne era.
BearNDesert LLC Yes, I agree. Aqua and Silent Nation are great Payne-era albums. I loved the whole catalog. Big fan.
Aria is best from Payne era IMO - "Desire" is such a big song and the album works even better than "Alpha".
yes, me too, i wonder who will stop the rain is great
Yup, that’s a really good one
Asia’s Aura is a worthy listen.
10 - Days Like These

6 - Go
5 - The Heat Goes On
4 - The 😃 Smile Has Left Your 👀 Eyes
3 - Heat Of The Moment

1 - Only Time Will Tell
yes def Days Like These. Great tune.
@@STEVEHEROLDyes! Steve Lukather on guitar on that track!
I’d add ELPowell to that.

@@brianlobo1512 Very Cool!!!
@@seanswinton6242 Exactly! Many times these bands serve as a sort af a link between the more pop oriented and the more progressive sound!
I'm partial to Asia Alpha. That was the one that turned me on to their music.
It's so good. It's under appreciated.
In fact, all three albums from the reunion were top notch IMO...but appear to be underrated here, inc. the host.
This is my top ten of Asia:
1.- The Smile has left your eyes
2.- Daylight
3.- Midnight sun
4.- The last to Know
5.- Eye to Eye
6.- Sole survivor
7.- Cutting it fine
8.- Open your eyes
9- Only time will tell
10.- Heat of the moment
Francisco Castro Mayora wow, you really like the Alpha album. That’s cool. It’s the original line up. The only thing about that album is that it’s too mellow.
'Go' is #1 for me. Really catchy and rockin' tune.
Mine too. Astra is also my #1 album...
My top ten Asia songs
1. Countdown To Zero
2. Go
3. Too Late
4. Rock And Roll Dream
5. Eye To Eye

Daylight (b-side)
Open Your Eyes (Alpha)
Voice of America (Astra)
Days Like These (Then & Now)
Never Again (Phoenix)
I Believe (Omega)
Face On The Bridge (xxx)
Great band....rock solid albums, IMO.
Wildest Dreams, Here Comes The Feeling, Heat of the Moment, Never Again, No Religion and Who Will Stop The Rain are probably my favourite Asia songs.
I really like their songs “I Know How You Feel” and “Face on the Bridge” from their 2012 album XXX. Definitely worth giving a listen!

Awesome.
JT Michaelson I’m surprised Pete didn’t mention it, very surprised!
Love that song, very motivating and energizing
Yep, that first album! Stand out track for me is “Without You” amazing guitar solo. Also like to mention “The smile has left your Eyes” from Alpha. Soft spot for that one especially after seeing John Wetton performing a basic acoustic version of the song live. Beautiful.
For me the lower half of Alpha is my favorite the first half has some good songs, but not that memorable. I love The Heat Goes On, Eye To Eye, The Last To Know, True Colors, Open Your Eyes, Midnight Sun is ok
Am I the only Asia fan who only listens to the first three albums?
No! ;)
Nathan Bates no, I listen to them as well.
Love the album art on their debut. That dragon coming out of the water! Awesome!

Who will stop the rain from the Aqua album is without a doubt my favorite Asia song. Honestly, I think Aqua is also my favorite album by them too. Although still can’t deny the greatness of that debut.
Do a ranking the ozzy Osbourne’s solo albums pleaseeee!!!!
I don't think he likes a lot of the albums that came out after Bark at the Moon. He may not have even heard all the 90s, 00s and 10s albums. I'm pretty sure he hasn't heard the new one yet.
I've always really loved "Only Time Will Tell". "Sole Survivor" is a close second. I've heard "Heat Of The Moment" almost too much. Lol
That first 1982 album - to me - just my opinion- is @ perfect 👌 example of “ @ SUPERGROUP “ just completely dominating and 💯 % defining what a Supergroup is capable of achieving!!
My top 5:

Davey Cretin daylight is an awesome song. Should have been on the album and as a single.
That debut finished #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums of 1982.

Without You is my favorite Asia song of all time. The build-up to the guitar solo and the solo itself is just so good. Definitely underrated.
I'm into the Icon albums Geoff and John did too.
patriotpizzaman you love the last two you say? What are some of your favorites on “30”?
@@RussDRocker Tomorrow The World, Faithfull, Face On The Bridge, Judas, Ghost of a Chance. I like all of the other songs too but, not as much as these five. The album has a manic energy to most of the material and anytime John belts out a line it's a highlight. This wasn't there best album but, I got into a tradition about fifteen years ago where I listen to Asia during my vacations. I have spun all of their albums many times throughout this "tradition" and have grown to like most of their material.
Try Gravitas if you're looking for an amazing album. John sang as if it was his last day on that one. He left it all on the studio floor!
Huge Asia fan! These are my top ten picks...
1) Sole Survivor

Great list Pete. Sole Survivor such a classic. I've loved that song right from the very first time I heard it and never tire of hearing it!
Asia's top 10 songs. The entire 9 off of the debut and whatever one you want to pick from after that.
I think Steve Howe was partly underrated in this band, I love the songs he wrote for Asia. But there are also a few good tracks from the John Payne period.

2. Don't cry
3. Go
4. Through my veins
5. Open your eyes
6. The heat goes on

I remember how huge that first album was. Still love it. I have time for the second album. I did lose track of them after Astra though. I actually met John Payne briefly recently. Seems like a nice guy.
Ride Easy sure is a good Asia song. Great list Pete!

Well, the first two albums and "Aria" are obviously my favorites from them. "Aqua" has few good songs but none of them is in my TOP 10.
Thank you for the list, so will you rank the albums in the future? Is that how you typically do these videos by doing the Top 10 songs of certain bands and then in the near future you do the ranking of their studio discography?
10. Days Like These
9. Valkyrie

I don't have any studio album later than Astra.
For my favorite song in each album:
Asia (Cutting It Fine)
Alpha (The Smile has left your eyes)
Astra (Go)
Aqua (Who Can Stop The Rain)
Aria (Don't Cut the Wire)
Arena (The Day Before the War)
Silent Nation (Blue Moon Monday)
Aura (Under the Gun)
Phoenix (Parallel Worlds)
Omega (Finger on the Trigger)
XXX (No Religion)
Gravitas (Nyctophobia)
The thing is, it´s like two diffrent bands - like some of these later ones, have seen them on the silent nation tour, but It´s hard to compare ... Alpha was produced too symphonik I think, it sonds too soft, acually liked the phoenix comeback more, had high hopes for the next omega was okay but thought the rest was terrible. Actually theire big hit´s for me are just okay... Not in my Top 10+ 5 List
01.Cutting it Fine - ASIA
02.Only Time Will Tell - ASIA
03.Go - ASTRA
04.The Smile Has Left Your Eyes -Alpha

One Step Closer is probably my favorite song from their debut.

9. The Heat Goes On
10. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes
I would love to see you rank all of Asia's albums one day! Some of their albums are very hard to find these days (Rare and Omega, looking at you)
Not a big Asia fan, but scanning the albums I do like “Who Will Stop the Rain”. I actually dig this one. Not so pop sounding.
Only time will tell is my number one song, I like the catchiness of it and the time changes
Cutting it fine, here comes the feeling & sole survivor !!
10. Cutting it Fine
9. Never in a Million Years
8. Rock and Roll Dream
7. Voice of America
6. Don't Cry
5. Here Comes the Feeling
4. Time Again
3. Heat of the Moment
2. True Colors
Spot on with this one Pete.

10. An Extraordinary Life

Thanks for reminding me that I need to get that box set that has all the reunion era albums.
I agree with your #1 but I think "the smile has left your eyes" and "days like these" deserve honorable mention.
For you perhaps...I'm not big on those.
Of course the first three albums are the best, but there are also some other gems like the title song Arena from the Payne era and Tomorrow the World and Face on the Bridge from XXX. They are very beautiful and memorable songs.
I love Heat Of The Moment and Only Time Will Tell And Don't Cry and The remix of Go also love Open Your Eyes and Sole Survivor and Wildest Dreams
Like to see pete rank asia albums
Cutting It Fine and Here Comes The Feeling are my two favorites
Listen Children from Omega - very good song.
Only Time Will Tell is my #1 80s song ever but I love most every song off both Asia & Alpha.
"Time Again" was my favorite by far. The only album I have is the first one. About half the songs were pretty good.
Not a huge fan but days like these is my favorite.
Wildest dreams I love
What follows is my personal opinion of Asia. My list is a mosaic list across virtually everything up to "Aura". For the record my favorite five albums up through this era are, in order, are:
1. Asia
2. Alpha
3. Aqua
4. Arena
5. Aura
I am a fan of some of the later Wetton era albums, but I had to stop the list somewhere, and the stronger material for Asia is at the front end. The problem with the latter two is there's a lot of filler. So much of it is so poppy I thought I was listening to soft rock. On the other hand the John Payne era had some really good ballads, and some of these made the list. I limited it to twenty.
20: After the War
19: Countdown to Zero
18: Awake
17: Anytime
16. Don't Cut the Wire (Brother)
15. Summer
14. Military Man
13. Don't Cry
12: Free
11. Crime of the Heart
10. Heaven
9. Ready to Come Home
8. Who'll Stop the Rain
7. The Day Before the War
6. Arena
5. Midnight Sun
4. Never in a Million Years
3. Without You
2. One Step Closer
1. Sole Survivor
Why are "Heat of the Moment", "Open Your Eyes", "My Own Time" and "Heat Goes On" missing? I love these first few albums dearly, but I wanted to give the Payne era a little love. Finding them was a serious chore, though. To find the gems I had to click through the catalog and throw out the bits that are chaff. There are more rockers in "Aqua" but the remaining albums get poppier beginning with "Aria". After "Aura" I lost all interest until Wetton returned. Even then the magic was gone.
