Omg he described British society and my life in England to a tee even though he's talking about US.
Isolation, lack of community and people just don't get it that you can be nice and generous, just because!
Also that raw humane warmth that people have in Serbia (even though Serbs think it's long gone) is so special and not found everywhere, at least not in the West.
You can't fool children and that's what my child also resonates with the most in Serbia - humane warmth.

Serbia is like no other place. In Vojvodina you have, apart from Serbs, Hungarians, Slovaks, small Banat Romanians (Vlasi) communities, even some Rusyn (or decendants from migration in the 18th century of people from Ukrainian Carpathians) and the Romani (or gypsies) with everybody getting along just fine. Seeing is believing! I think most no country with such a diversity of ethnic groups treats their minorities better. With other nationalities (Croats, Bosnians and Albanians), well it is a much mure complicated and nuanced topic, but aside from politics I couldnt feel the hostility.
The hospitality of Serbs and their sincere and warm friendship is like nothing else. If you are nice to a Serb, he/she will reprocicate 1000x back. Go Serbia!

    • @emilpopovic6167

Just a small correction. The Romanians of Banat are not Vlasi. They live along the Danube and in the hills from Veliko Gradište down to around Zaječar. In Banat you have Romanians.

In Vojvodina you will never feel it, I read somewhere there are 24 minorities living here in total, I'm not sure is that true because you listed almost all of them and it's far from 24, but I do know we are all chilled because we see we can all live together without any problems, and what I love even more is the fact if anybody tried to mess with how we behave to each other there would be problems. We don't care what anybody else who doesn't live here think of us, we want to live in peace with each other because we can.

On the loneliness: in Serbia in elementary you're with the same group of people for 8 years, spending half of each day around them. Then in high school another group of people for 4 years. For such a long time even the most introverted people will form strong connection to at least few other people. In the US, AFAIK, you change groups for every class, and every year, which means you have to make friends fast or you'll lose the opportunity.
Also, in Serbia there is usually only one big migration in one's life: when you go from your home town to one of the cities for college. And because you either go to Belgrade or Niš/Novi Sad/Kragujevac (depending on which part of the country you're from) a lot of your friends and family will make the migration with you or have already made it earlier and are waiting for you. After college you either return to your hometown or remain in the college city, in both cases you have established friends and family.
In the USA you move to a completely foreign place for college, then afterwards you move to another city for job, then probably move a few more times over the span of your life and you have to rebuild your friend group every time. Naturally, this will make most of your relationships flimsy.
At least that's my reasoning, based on everything I learned about the USA over the years.

I used to live in Serbia from 1983-91. And again in 2010's. While it was still OK in YU times, 80's were prime time of Yugoslavia in many ways, 2010's turned into a total nightmare on all fields. We can see the results of this nightmare daily just right now, too. I still regularly come to visit my lifetime friends, their opinion is even much worse then mine. But I can imagine someone enjoying it to a certain level, if he lives in his own world, and is not socially oversensitive. Veliki pozdrav svim dobrim ljudima!

Toliko.
