      I'm sixteen and that would be a god send. Lot's of players are in there older teens to young twenties so it would make since. I think it would definitely help alot of them but what would that bring to the table? College tuition in the US is absurd compared to other countries and it would be very much resticted to the top 4 players and could put a hole in tge games budget also it could hurt the educational system as a whole cause kids would actually try to play it more to try and get scholar ships and more people wouldn't really pay attention to actual school. Also Yugioh takes alot of skill do high schoolers who aren't very good could get pissy if they lose since high schoolers tend to be more competitive when it comes to that kind of stuff. Also some students might not be able to travel to those events with lack of money or school days. As much as I would love that it's very impractical.

    Yugioh needs cash prizes; yugioh is so much more expensive compared to other card games and there's little to no cash prize support.

      @kypli1511 5 лет назад

      Zedrick Jaramillo yu gi oh would probably get even more expensive if there were cash prizes. It’s probably why Magic cards are so much

    • @occultninja4
      @occultninja4 5 лет назад +1

      @@kypli1511 actually magic usually isn't that bad from what I heard. Usually. In recent times, I heard it's gotten pretty bad basically because standard got really... Awkward I guess. See the whole problemfest with Nexus of fate red rush, and tefiri, but in healthier times for Magic, the price of Standard I don't think was as bad as it can be for YGO.
      Also it's very hard to say at the same time though, because Magic has basically always had cash prizes so there's nothing to go by. However, one could test it.
      If Wizards announced that they would no longer do cash prizes would the prices of decks on the 2ndary market drop? Presumably so, because you'd have the 'netdeckers' who were playing those top tier decks for the purpose of winning said cash prize no longer incentized to play, and thus they don't buy those singles, leading to less demand. However, this will only affect the price IF enough players are no longer interested in building those decks enough to force the price to go down. AKA, if people keep buying the decks anyway, the price won't really go down. All that's happen is that you'd lose part of the crowd. But as long as you have a critical mass of people that will buy the cards and participate in the events to win (it's not like no prize support will take 100% of attendance) then things will remain the same.
      I would argue the same is true for YGO in a vice versa fashion. Adding cash prizes just means that those who go to YCSs to compete for them might be more willing to pay more to get better cards and decks. That doesn't necessarily reflect the much bigger casual market. Adding cash prizes will only successfully raise the price if enough people consistently buy the cards for that higher price. If people don't buy, the price will stay where it has been at it's equilibrium. Sure you might be justified to charge higher, but if no one buys, you're not really getting anywhere. What I mean to say is that by trying to milk money from.the smaller competitive player base, vendors would be losing the money they could be getting from those who don't care about going to YCSs. You'd sell 100 copies for 200$ when you could sell 1000 copies for 100$. That matters when you have stock that just sitting there aging and gradually losing relevance and value.
      Don't forget about the fundamentals of econ peeps!

    It's funny that in their Anime, Dueling is actually a profession that people can make lives off of. So they hint at that possibility but you have to consider what it would mean if they gave cash prize support. Currently, they make money from printing cardboard and rubber mats. If they changed their support to actual money, the amount of profit they make will significantly decrease. As a company, it doesn't seem like a logical decision to incur such a change.

    So, as someone who plays Magic the Gathering and has actually gotten prize money (though not consistently, I'm only "fine") I can give a little bit of data on how it's altered MtG. (Also, love the channel. I play YGO for casual fun so you guys are a wealth of info.)
    Fights- There's roughly five major events a month, along with a handful of others. I have personally never seen a fight or something close outside of local stores. This is mostly due to how much support MtG for it's judge program- they're everywhere and foster a great atmosphere.
    Participation prizes- So, I only play YGO very casually, but are playmats not normal? Every magic tourmament has playmats, usually sleeves, and a few other throw ins. Even local game story Friday Night Magic usually has some small prizes. From what you're saying, it sounds like you're already getting less.
    Young players- This worry, man you're right to have. While the judges work hard to make tournaments welcoming for everyone, I rarely see any kids. It's definitely a young adult-adult game. I've even seen this carry over to FNM (I guess our version of locals?) where the average age is probably 25.
    Theft- Another one where you're on the money. Theft is rampant at MtG tournaments, so much so that they sell deckboxes and backpacks advertised to help prevent theft (some even have GPS trackers in them.) I don't know how much there is in YGO to compare, but it's common at tournaments.
    Other stuff- MtG pays for it's prize support out of admission and, mainly, it's advertising budget. That's why you never see commercials- tournament prizes are the commercials. Play MtG, make $$$. It doesn't count as gambling and requires little extra paperwork (though I've never run one so I could be offbase.) Winnings are taxed income though, so you have to pay attention to it. Magic also offers cards/paid flights/uncut sheets as prizes as well, so it's not an either/or proposition.
    Travel- Do YGO tournaments not give out invites to the next event? That's really common. If nothing else, winning a YCS should get you a paid flight/hotel to the next one. They already get discounted prices at hotels for mass booking their own employees/staff, so it's insane that they don't. More than cash, if I were a good Yugioh player I would campaign for this. If top players can't get to events, of course they won't hit the top eight consistently. It's also great for the metagame, as it provides clearer data on what's good.
    Teams- I don't know if this is a thing in YGO, but the advent of cash prizes made pro-teams a huge deal. People would join together, practice against one another, and help with deckbuilding to the point where pretty much every top eight player is on a testing team. A fair amount are sponsored as well. (It all comes back to advertising.)
    Side Events- Because Magic tournaments are, by default, only a few people make day two, their biggest appeal is all of the side events. Artists are there signing/altering cards, stores have booths, and side events are huge. Mini-tournaments that exist separately from the main for smaller stakes. They also have play with the pros/celebrity events where each eight person pod will have some relevant celebrity or mtg youtuber in it (like you guys.)
    All in all, it's a mixed bag but I'd definitely say cash money is a better system. At the very least, it sounds like you YGO players are getting the bare minimum of prizes which sucks. Hope some of that nonsense was helpful, love the videos.

      The Problem is the following: During corona some "pros" played events that werent hosted by konami in order to participate in anything. Those events had cash prices and better players now realize how great it is to be able to earn money for all the effort they put into the game. This leads to the following->good players will quit konami tournaments and will play those private hosted tournaments, because there they will get the money.
      With no cash prices konami is about to slowly ruin its tournament scene. Because yes there are other tournament-hosts with a lot of money that will use their tournament as marketing (deckboxes, sleeves,..) and offer money pricing.
      In my opinion konami has only 1 chance to not loose control and that is giving away good cash prices aswell. The pressure is definetly on konami right now. They might not want to add cash prices but they kinda have to or their tournaments die.

    In my opinion there is no excuse for yugioh to not have money prizes.Yes there are some negatives but the positives outweigh them. No, there are no legal problems, no there won't be no participation award. The only thong that should be charged are the top prizes nothing less nothing more, as having "pros" sell most of their prizes to cover their expences is straight up stupid.You guys do have a fair argument in that there might be more "ragging" and fighting at events but an opinion should not be excluded just because some players decide to behave unsportsmanlike.

  • @dragon_shrine
    @dragon_shrine 5 лет назад +6

    I have to side with Cash Prizes in tournament for this argument. In the past, maybe one could argue that the player could trade the winning prizes for their expenses, but time changes. Travel fees, food and lodgings, everything is getting expensive, not to mention the time and money put into collecting the cards and testing the deck to compete. There has to be cash prizes at some points, especially in the much prestige/higher tier events, like the World Championship. Imagine getting to the top and getting some playmat and limited card and other trinkets, only to sell all that to cover up a year (or more) worth of investing to the game, that's just sad.

    money would cause issues in the player base. since gambling laws differ from state to state [some states its 18 others its 21] that can really limit the number of players that can legally enter the event, konami would most likely have to host a mega regional every event to accomodate the other players.
    personally i would want konami to spend the money to host more events in bigger locals like nyc. the javitis center would be the best place since just the lower level alone can host one area for the main event, another for side events, the third for the vendors. if there is a need to hold another ycs like what happened in germany, there is room enough to do that too. they could even host scripted duels/finals on the main stage of the javitis center.

    Each card would be preprogrammed with a chip that defines the peramiters of that character. And an A.I. to determine the interactions between cards, based on tournament rules.
    This would take millions to create, but it could be done in a stadium setting like an NBA game and tickets sold, and spectacular battle displays so that it could be televised.

    I think that, in any game (card/board/video/others) tournament, if it is a big or not, there has to be some good prizes to winners. And if there is a money prize, cheque is always a bad idea, because someone can easily steal that peace of paper.
    And if i can choose, that what prizes i want to win, if i am one of winners, i choose money and stuff, that i liked to have/get/need (because if i get a stuff that i don't need and i wanna sell it, there is no 100% sure, that someone want's to buy that stuff).

      MTG costs a lot more then Yu-Gi-Oh. So cash prizes is better for your game. Don't try to deny how much more expensive it is because I too play magic. MTG has like 13 different banlists and you can only use card printed from x-year to x-year. Meaning you have to constantly buy cards from new sets to be competitive. In Yu-Gi-Oh, you skill comes from knowing how to build a deck same in Magic. The meta game here in Yu-Gi-Oh is just trash. They hurt a lot of decks to force us to buy stuff we don't want or need. MTG has cash prizes for its events and doesn't have any of the issues you brought up in your video. While these things do happen, they are extremely rare and as you pointed out, many of these things still do happen in yugioh without the cash prizes. Large MTG events almost always have a free playmat just for playing in them aswell so I don't see why they would have to pick one or the other. I know several friends who have given up yugioh and started playing MTG instead because it's cash prizes allow decks to pay for themselves which makes investing in the game much easier.

    I think it should be for first, second third. They could increase prices for events. Cheating will always be prevalent no matter what. If people are already traveling to another city and paying for a hotel, would that not already possibly give some incentive to cheat? The other option is to just make the cards they give out playable. I'd like that more. It would make it feel like you actually won something. I'd have no problem if someone won a ycs and showed up one day with a really broken card. If they limit it to 1 per ycs, it would be such a limited print and odds of encountering would be so slim anyways so let them have some benefit of winning once.

      Okay but, for instance, let's say Thunder Dragon Colossus was a prize card. Depending on where the cut off would be, 1-32 players would have this insanely broken card for their thunder dragon deck, where the rest of the player base would not. So these 32 players would have a massive advantage over anyone else in future tournaments. And then you would have a similar top 32 at every tournament since these players have such an advantage, and nobody wants that.

    My reason for it is that If there is money involved, it would something called “Rigged Gambling”. Basically, The Competition is has a high prize value, and everyone does what ever it takes to win, even CHEATING! Like what if you stole a card because it can fetch a high price, or Vendors ripping people off with unfair prices? That would be any Yugioh tournament in a nutshell if! Money was included as the prizes.

    And how many casuals won a tournament? Barely, because the top players almost always meet each other at the end...

    Official YuGiOh tourney is the only "BIG" tournament that I know of that doesn't offer cash prize..

    Firstly, cheating and theft is not tolerable at monetary events compared to prize events so actually it would decrease as you can be arrested at monetary events unlike prize events.
    You literally just make a cut spread and increase the costs for entry to give packs and mats but free packs aren't good cause it means last place could end up leaving with a better prize than first.
    Also it has the same tax deductable so all you have to do to cancel out those extra charges is increase entry prices

    So, It has a a lot of problems to add cash prize support. It has to be executed correctly and has to have foresight, they need to create a plan and make steps towards in acting it, instead of just rolling out a mess with a lot of problems, and involve the player base a long the way. At first the prize support wouldn't be what people want, because it should be attendance based. maybe a total of a 3k purse for top based on average attendance for a YCS. Including the player base is important because of the options to pay for this change. One would be not providing packs at registration. Casual players won't like this, secondary market will increase with less cards in circulation. The first option i think has to happen along with the second thing that needs to happen, and that is by increasing the entry by 10-15 dollars. This makes the mats provided have a higher value for those that didnt attend. Also I think promo cards should be included with registration. Make an alt art card or special rarity for Competitive events where for instance you get a YCS thanos, that wont hurt the price of thanos much in this example, and it helps supplement the cost of attending a YCS by choosing to sell the promo and mat, or at that point you're gaining merch you will use just for attending. the increase in attendance isn't just good for the game and company growth but also for prize support. if you have 2000 players attending a ycs the prize purse could be something close to 50k, and pay all the way down to like the top 300. Getting a invite, like 50 bucks, a promo, and a mat covers the cost depending on how you had to travel. One down side, but maybe a upside to the more competitive fan base is that getting a invite will get harder, and they might decrease the amount of players they give invites to at the same time.
