      The tongue shape gives resonance. With the smeagol scream it causes the sound to have the rattle you hear. Kardechev Academy goes into better detail on it during his analysis of Lorna Shore.

    So the tongue coming forward is very important for the sound Will is getting on some of those highs. If you noticed, some of his highs have that more Smeagoly sound to them and other ones kind of sound like he's screaming through a long pvc pipe. I don't really know how else to describe it. But it's the tongue getting pushed out with the tip against the back of the bottom teeth that causes that sound.

    • @ullrich
      @ullrich 2 года назад +1

      Wow with your description of the long PVC tube, I now understand why they call it the "tunnel throat" or "tunnels" - but you're spot on the tongue is the key to that sound.

    I rather suspect that Will's "Smeagol" voice is not actually a fry scream per se, but rather an aryepiglottic fold scream plus significant rattling from the lingual dorsum as essentially an unvoiced palatal fricative. His slow growls also seem to be produced from more than just his vestibular folds - they just have way too much depth and texture. I hear very exciting rumblings that Elizabeth got a camera down Mr Ramos's throat and can hardly wait to learn the results!!

    • @senseofpermanence
      @senseofpermanence 2 года назад +1

      I can't comment on the anatomy much, but seeing where the aryepiglottic folds are on the throat leads me to believe it's similar because it very much does feel like that area when I do my own screams. It feels like it comes from the upper part of the throat more than anything, best I could describe it it's like stretching out the bottom end and tightening the top.

    Some subtle genius that I don’t think you mentioned: during the final chorus, when the song modulates up both times, Will follows the instruments by using a higher pitched set of screams than he did on the first two choruses that are in the original key. Really fleshes out the feeling that the song is ascending and climaxing, reaching a literal high point. So much better than if they had just used the same vocals as before. Super well thought out on Lorna’s part. Hats off to them for this entire ep and the two latest singles, they’re both excellent. Can’t wait till October for the new album!

    Sticking the tongue out opens the sound within the chamber made by the shape of the mouth and the throat. Depending on whether you inhale growl or exhale growl, it changes the texture of the sound travelling down or out of the tunnel. It also makes the effect you are going for sound less contained or constrained. If you sing a note with the tongue inside the mouth and then move your tongue as you hold the note to external to the mouth, you'll hear the way the sound changes.

    Since Will mainly does fry techniques it definitely helps to keep the throat mucusy and lubricated. And yes the tongue helps shape the words. And to do tunnel vocals where it sounds like two layer of a vocals high/low, it's because of his tongue shape mostly

    Changing external movements of the mouth does change your sounds. When I used to scream regularly with my band, my friend one time lightly grabbed my jaw and opened and closed it in different directions. Each direction made a slightly different sound than the last. Pitch with a scream though was always done behind the uvula though. I always thought the tighter I made the hole to push air though, the higher the sound; like letting the air out of a balloon but pulling the sides of the nozzle apart. The smaller the hole you force the air out through, the more shrill the sound.

  • @sean_mccadden

    What I believe hes doing when hes doing the "goblin-y shmeagle sound" is hes kinda folding his tongue like dolpins or Orcas do and this helps get the "shreeky" or "shmeagle" part of the sound and then sticking his tongue out more helps get that "goblin-y" blend by allowing you to move your tongue out of the way and open your through more giving you both the mid and high over tones

    From my somewhat intermediate knowledge as a guitar player. His solos have lots of melody from the base of the scales he uses. The fast bits are played with what I’m guessing is alternative(up-down) picking arpeggio scales or sweep picking arpeggios. The high-pitched note ring out at the end are called pinch harmonics; which I can’t explain well so you might have to research.

    • @goldenhate6649

      For the pinch harmonics, the tldr is you artificially make the string shorter by pinching it extremely precisely after picking

    Fun fact. THIS was the song that got me into lorna shore (when the music video released). Originally I had skipped all the reactions of to the hellfire. Binged them ofc after it clicked in me... But still. It was THIS song that got me. Granted, to the hellfire, and Of the Abyss are definitely my 2 most listened to of the 3... by like... a LOT. But hey, better a little late than never right?
    I've never wanted to sound like someone, as fast as I have wanted to sound like Will. Alas, I'm plagued by a panic disorder that doesn't afford me the luxury of vocal coaching. What a sick cruel world we live in lol
    Edit: what you have written down at 8:59 is THE EXACT REASON FOR ME GETTING INTO THE SONG IN THE FIRST PLACE. His screams... there's pitch difference naturally... but it also sounds tonal to me. I'm so glad someone else had a similar thought process to me (maybe other people did... but you actually wrote it down, so thank you!)

    I think Lorna Shore have some influence from or leaning to the melodeath* sub-genre. The instrumentalists are incredible - almost as incredible as Will's vocals. I think their lead guitarist is an excellent example of what you can do if you practise your scales and arpeggios every day!

    Hey Julia! I'm really enjoying your content, so keep up the good work! If I could make a recommendation, I would strongly suggest that you check out Subterranean Masquerade, specifically their song "Nomad". There is this really great kind of live-studio-version of this song here on youtube, which they recorded on a rooftop in Haifa next to a train depot for the Counter C. festival in Japan.

    The tongue thing is often used to create a tunnel like effect. Try it yourself. Try both ways, to the side and to the front bottom teeth and just talk. Try to create different spaces for the sound to move through, feel it out, you'll see.

    For growls and scream the mouth adjustment (how open, how closed, wide, the tongue placement etc) is everything. For example high scream mouth is open (and sideways wider open it sound different) and low the mouth is just a bit open. You can try it for yourself using a little bit of forced air flow through your vocal chords and with even flow try to use different faces. Just be careful.

    The tongue moving forward adds a lot of resonance on the top of your mouth (I think it’s known as the soft pallet) and it kinda changes up the sound to make a zombie like noise. It’s one of the coolest things I learned to do with my screams even though it’s very hard to annunciate words with your mouth in that shape 😂

    If you like the kind of gothic approach and these solos, I bet you'd enjoy Children of Bodom and the composition (and execution) talent of the regretted Alexi Laiho. Some orchestras paid tribute to his work and adapted it into classical music pieces (but they also did "guitar lessons" to play classical pieces with heavy metal guitar settings). I bet it has already been recommended a thousand times and you may already know the band but... yeah, if you don't, listening to it may be something you'd like :).

    So about the solo from a guitarist.
    The ringing out part you are talking about are called "pinch Harmonics" and are very common in metal. Adam(IIRC his name correctly) likes to do a lot of sweep picking(basically strumming individual notes like a chord but separated) arpeggios in between almost blues style melodic motifs. I agree it makes for some really nice and technically challenging solos. +1 for highlighting the guitar this whole entire band is really great.
