I've had the Phonak Virto Marvel aids for about a month now, and I love them! Comfy, discrete, and very effective at amplifying and clarifying sound. My only complaint (and it is very minor) is that moisture builds up in my ear and causes itching, so several times a day I have to pop them out and dry both them and my ear canal with a tissue on my finger. I LOVE the phone app. I love streaming music, radio & podcasts. Also love that the app allows you to have remote appointments with your audiologist, who can adjust the aids on the spot. She says if I take care of them, they should last maybe 5 years. Pricey ($4,500) but worth it. Highly recommend them.

Great video. I feel we're on the edge of a great amount of change in the options for patients. I've been to 1 audiologist, but they didn't spend a lot of time suggesting what product will fit my lifestyle better. They basically offered 2 options and then said "but we can get anything." I didn't feel I was presented with the information I needed to make an informed decision. I have an appointment with a different audiologist next week.

I trialed my first ever pair of Phonak with the Virto M Black M50. I loved the connectivity to my Android phone for music, videos and phone calls without needing a connector box. I was having a major issue with wind noise though and a minor issue with the sound that S's make. Everyone suddenly sounded like Sean Connery, "I shhhall play shhome crapshh at the cashhino.", but was glad to hear that the S sound issue was something that could be turned off by sliders at the Audiologist. The wind was still very bad though, so much so that I couldn't hear people talking if there was even a moderate breeze outside.
Upgraded to the M70, which has a program called 'Wind Block' that the M50 does not, and I've noticed a much better hearing experience when outside in moderate wind. I'll probably need to have the wind block maxed out as opposed to the halfway point, but it has made a massive difference. I noticed that the Bluetooth strength seems to be slightly weaker in the M70's, but I'm chalking that up to M50's just use less space internally so they could improve on antenna spacing/strength. I also hear people quite a bit better when they're across the way, mostly in eavesdropping scenarios, which is kind of neat. Not to eavesdrop, but to be able to hear distant chatter much more clearly than ever before.
TL/DR, the Phonak Virto M Black half shell in the M70 seems to be the best bang for your buck. If you aren't outside much or in any sort of windy environment, then go with the M50's that lack the Wind Block program, but will save you $800'ish dollars, depending on your provider's fees. Five stars, the best pair I've ever owned. They even threw in a free TV streamer for me (Phonak new line special, I believe). Take care!

    Dr. Cliff,
I've had asymmetrical hearing loss for at least 7 years now and I have tried three different types of hearing aid setups with Siemens/Signia hearing aids. My insurance only covers hearing aids offered through HearUSA. Each time I tried these hearing aids I returned them because I felt the price even with my $2,000 per ear benefit was not worth the minimal to almost unnoticeable hearing improvement. Also HearUSA jacks the price sky high rendering the benefit useless. My last attempt at this was about 8 months ago with a CROS solution however I feel like my bad ear still has some functional hearing left in it. The CROS I felt plugged it up completely rendering that ear useless.
I have heard nothing but great things about Phonak from your reviews as well as others. I also love this new look of the Phonak Virto Marvel Black. Can these Phonak hearing aids be tuned for asymmetrical hearing loss? Again I did not like the way the CROS solution felt on the Signia aids that I was using. I had better success when my bad ear had a hearing aid in it vs. a CROS solution. Thank you for all your amazing videos and information.

Dr. Cliff, any chance you might be interested in a comparison of the pros and cons of both the Audeo Marvel 90 and the Virto Marvel, compared against each other? Who would benefit from one over the other? I'm guessing that this Virto might have every feature the Audeo M90 has, and more, but possibly lack the wireless connectivity over greater distance and the amount of gain (ITC vs BTE). However it's difficult to find and literature that does a thorough comparison, so my assumption feels really ignorant. My wife has a 5-year-old set of Phonak ITEs and is ready for an upgrade, and is about to try the Audeo M90s, but switching to BTE is a small negative for her. Positives would be BT, phone app, and a much better auto-sense experience; ex: that doesn't fast-ocillate between programs, like during applause. She complains that the weird switching her 5-yr-old Phonaks did caused her to to ask her audi to just lock it into a more straight analog-style gain-only experience. Her audiograms are more flat and profound. I want her to have a great experience with the new autosense, and suspect it might take some tweaking. I have the KS9s and do programming at home, so I'm sold on this tech, big time. However we are both about to find the best audi we can, get really good REM, and both get into proper Phonaks; me first--I'm all about doing my research.

If not careful, this can make me look track of where I am in a conversation.

Hi Lynn No they will not give you any additional benefit. We often forget that hearing loss is a neurological deficit. Hearing aids are only an aid. It would be like expecting a wheelchair to help a paraplegic walk. Although technology has gotten wonderful, underlying you have nerve damage. I like to compare hearing aids with the new exoskeletons. They are now able to strap people into robots that allow them to walk up stairs and stand but it is still not like walking normally. Your hearing aids would be the same.

The best way to connect the TV connector is through the Optical Audio port on the back of your TV. Your Marvel devices need to be paired with the Connector by clicking the P button on the back of the TV Connector and rebooting your hearing aids by turning them off and on again. You can leave the TV connector on and just turn on the TV to start the stream. So I bought that hearing aid and after the trial. I returned it. I found it extremely annoying that every time I got a notification on my telephone it would interfere with the settings I was currently using. Meaning if I was in a certain situation and had selected certain settings as soon as I got a voicemail or a text or any kind of notification on my phone it would revert back to the default setting. Phonak knows about this defect in their phone app and doesn't seem to care much about fixing it. So that set of hearing aids went back. I feel like a lot of these manufacturers rush to get things to Market hoping that the customers will live with the problems and the bugs while they take their time working them out. I had the same kind of experience with the highest and Starkey Edge AI. In that case phone connectivity was just horrible. Absolutely horrible. That set got returned it also. Currently trying out the ReSound Quatro linx true Costco. They call it the Preza. I'm working through some adjustment issues now but it looks like this one will be a keeper. And of course Costco gives you 6 months to decide whether you like it or not and they're willing to remake things in the same style or a different style or a different line. All at no extra charge. I feel like I could be the commercial for them. Full disclosure this is a non compensated review.

My TV already picks up nearby Bluetooth, so I'm curious if I need this adapter or not. Thank you for your time and thanks again for the review.

I have not yet encountered a Smart TV that the Marvel line of devices have been able to connect directly to. I believe that even if you could, the latency would be too much and you would hear a delay in the stream. I would strongly recommend you get the TV Connector.

I bought the Virto black 90 and was extremely disappointed. Main problem with phone connectivity. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus which is supposed to be compatible. Every time my phone got any kind of notification it would throw my hearing aid out of the current setting and always revert to autosense 3.0. The only way to be able to use any of the advanced settings and to take advantage of any other program settings was to turn off all notifications on my phone. The whole idea of connectivity is to be able to have notifications. That's why they chimed in your hearing aids when they come in. Anyway apparently phonak knows all about this problem and doesn't have any interest in fixing it. Sounds like a beta tester to me. Was quite annoyed and I sent them back for a full refund. Moving on and planning to try Starkey now.

Great news, but there is an issue about this kind hearing aid in the ear, the sensitivity of the filter housing, the placing of the filter, the housing can get too wide over time, this can cause the filter to remain in the ear, last I when I tried to replace the filter the entire housing has sunk into the hearing aid, and believe me i did that very gently.
I'm talking about the Phonak Virto m90. So I hoop that Phonak did some modification about that.

Doctor Cliff, AuD Hi doc, I decided not to get cochlear implant. I am happy with hearing aids. Cochlear implants are expensive, risky, and hectic to manage. The device also hangs on the sides of my back of the head which I dislike. I prefer discreet hearing aids. Phonax mobile phone App is terrible, for modern users who need connectivity and a desire some control over their programs and environment profiles, hearing aid companies really have to put more effort into their app development or get left behind, and lose customers like myself. I believe 'hearables' will just destroy the hearing aid market within a couple of years, mainly because of their brilliant use of apps and the stability of them. That said out of all the hearing aids ive tried recently Widex Moments app was really good and the sound texture really natural.
