  • What was flying a Pan Am B747 in the 1970s like?
    In Los Angeles, you can re-live the magic of flying onboard a luxurious Pan Am B747 at Air Hollywood.
    I arrived at the 1970 airport terminal to check in on my Pan Am Experience Flight. Retro dressed Pan Am stewardesses offered cocktails, prop cigarettes and magazines. They served classic dishes such as caviar and chateaubriand exactly what Pan Am served back in the 70s. The menus, seat covers and china served were all original Pan Am items.
    During the flight, there are fashion shows with flight attendants dressed in all the Pan Am uniforms from over the years and assorted international airlines uniform. It was great retro fun and the memories will linger in my mind for a long time to come!

    My father Captain Harvey Beebe Jr flew for Pan Am for 32 years of meritorious service retiring in 1987. He was an aviation pioneer and trailblazer. He flew DC-7'S B707's and finished on the B747 retiring as a captain. The world will never see another pilot like him.

    Flying in the 70's must have been quite an experience. I cannot remember my first flight to Jakarta in 1975 since I was 2. Very well made replica of Pan Am Queen of the Skies, but I saw many more queens of the skies in this video. I'm a KLM-fan, so I like their uniforms from that era, but SQ was and still is the best imo. And yes, that spiral stair to the "hump". I remember looking up the stairs in 1983 in a SQ 747-200 (to SIN) for a couple minutes. Nothing happend until a SQ flight attendent grabbed my hand and took me upstairs to have a look and sit there. My English wasn't that good at that time (10 years old) but we could communicate, probably because of our love of the B747. I hope you can still share AV-video's with us in these exceptional times. You show us AV-geeks so many about aviation and everything related to it. Stay healthy and sure we will fly again!

    I worked as a flight attendant for Swissair in the 80ties. Mostly in first class withe 20 seats.
    After take off first classs passengers passengers came upstairs to take their drinks and canapees in a lounge atmosphere.
    The meal was served downstairs. 3 crews for 20 passengers. 2 hours before landing in New York, Racelette a Swiss melted cheese
    was served upstairs . Freshly made the same way as in the swisss alps . Half a cheese put against a grill and let it melt on a plate.
    The second meal was then served downstairs again. After meals we even offered Cigars out of a cigarbox.
    As first class seats were much in demand. Swissair had 30 first class seats in front of the plane for some time ... Swissair hostesses
    wore uniforms from Courreges, a french dessigner, mini skirt of course. The good old days of flying...

      Always remember the following: Every airline in the world is back by the highest levels of government in each country. Do not get arrested abroad for a crime on a plane. As a side note; they have the means to not only drag you off the plane but to tie you to your assigned seat for the duration of the flight. Safety business/Not customer service.

    • @dingo7055
      @dingo7055 4 года назад +5

      @@SyriusStarMultimedia Bullshit - United has dragged people off of planes because they overbooked them, the customer has paid for that seat and does nothing wrong, but they get dragged off anyway so the airline can protect its profits. Airlines now putting profits before people, which is the worst possible customer service, and from an aviation perspective, is actually incredibly dangerous for safety - by manufacturing an incident on board purely to save money, the airline risks personal injury to the passengers and their own staff. Also imagine if they extend this attitude to aircraft maintenance and you have a disaster on your hands.Safety my ass.

    how did they deal with severe turbulence back in the day? I can imagine those chinaware sliding on that wide table before being thrown all over the place.

    • @jason.mp3
      @jason.mp3 4 года назад +9

      I imagine it'd probably be the same as it is now on cruises and planes. Planes usually have trays that keep everything together, reducing the risk of everything spilling all over the place. Cruises are a little more messy with having to just hold on to plates and drinks so it won't fall off the table. It's pretty much the same now and in the past, but with less glass and fragile material and more plastic.
      TL;DR: Trays and/or passengers just having to manually keep their food and drinks on the table.

      The "heavy" class aircraft for passengers are preferred for "safety control" and more comfy, less feeling of "turbulance" (caused by flying thru quick temperature changes or, windy to calm air space) if "creature comforts" are concerned. Haa. 🛫 747s safety record is the best too. 😀👍🙏
      But most preferred, "4 jet turbines" are still the best bet to prevent any risky situation turning into any danger.
      ..
      Options...for more..
      Unless you have Antonov super size cargo jets of Russia recent years, it was taken out of salvage to be used for international extremely heavy cargo. 🤔😲
      .
      Military related ..
      also not mentioned in various class aircraft.
      747 is "queen of the sky" because of the practicality impeccable safety record. 😀👍🙏
      To much to list,
      but its truly amazing,

    My first flight ever was on Pan Am back in 1970. i was ten years old and flew to Los Angeles. My parents had to buy me a suit for the trip, I vividly remember the experience, the food, the flight attendants and everyone was dressed to kill. The whole experience was surreal, traveling in those days was a big deal and the anticipation of going on an airline like Pan Am was the icing on the cake.

  • @giladostrover

    looks fun! This is exactly the kind of thing I would dream of building when I was a kid. It is possible to further improve the experience with not very complicated additions that will give a slightly more realistic feeling in the cabin or during boarding. The most missing thing in my opinion is to put a hidden sound system near that sheet with the 747 printed on it, that plays a sound track of the very symbolic sound of the auxiliary power unit of the 747. That ever so memorable high-pitched whistle that was so exciting when you got on a flight in a 747. Even inside the cabin, I think there is room to add a subtle sound effect of the buzz of the electrical system, maybe along with some typical background music "of airlines", maybe to find the original boarding music that was played on Pan Am. Also, during the meal I would play the sound of the rumble noise from the drag during the "flight" ". Even just one of these ideas would greatly enhance the sense of conviction that the visitors are actually in flight and not just dining in an aviation museum showroom or in a still factory mock-up. I can think of other things like some sort of symbolic visual effect in the windows that looks more or less like clouds moving by maybe with something with some GOBO light or something along those lines (not necessarily with screens like in a simulator). If only I could afford to build a project similar to this... 🙂

    What a great idea! I didn't know about this before this video. Next time I go to LA I will have to experience it!
    This video brought back many memories of flights on Pan-Am and other airlines back in the 70s and 80s. I stil have Pan-Am playing cards, soap, and other miscellaneous items. I enjoyed many flights on Pan-Am as a kid and young adult. My first 747 ride was on Pan-Am between Sao Paulo (VCP) and New York (JFK). Once, on a trip from Miami back to Rio, we had a stop over in Brasilia and the captain invited me to the cockpit while we were stopped. I already liked airplanes, but for a 7 year old to sit in the pilot's seat of a 707, now that was just awesome! They left the cockpit door open for the next leg to Rio so I could see them fly the plane from my seat in the cabin! I will never forget that experience! My love for aviation was cemented that day and I have never regreated spending my life in the aviation industry. I never lost my excitement for being around airplanes and it was always a joy to go to work. I still get very excited about a trip on a plane, even now that I am retired. Thanks for digging up the memories. Sam! I truly enjoyed this video!
    As for Uniforms, I can't decide between the British Caledonian or the Northwest Orient. I remember those uniforms from flights I took on those airlines. BCal's service was superior to NW's as I recall. Plus, there was a super cute British stewardess that made that plaid uniform unforgettable. She stopped by often and we chatted a bunch on my first flight to Europe. It was a British Caledonian DC-10 flight from Rio (GIG) to London (LGW). I was 9 and remember staying awake for the entire trip because I was too excited to sleep! And that stewardess; Carol was her name! She had such a lovely accent! Ah, those days were tremendous!!
    Cheers, Sam! I always look forward to your videos!
