Was gonna say pretty much the exact same thing. At some point, you just have to decide a cut off point. Even if you only collect Takara, they constantly redo the same characters. Even in 3rd party, the whole v2.0 and even v3.0 happens... Future proofing is an illusion. Just have to stop collecting at some point.

The video isn't about buying figures so that you never have to buy figurea again
It's about making sure you jump on the right opportunities so you don't have to upgrade your collection/you depiction of a character for a while, as well as making sure you get the right things before they sell out and you have to hunt for them at a much worse price on the after market.
Besides theres already a TON of characters that have gotten PERFECT figure representation in recent yeara and it's best to jump on those before they become a rarity

You nailed it, Dr Egg did not sell well because of price. X-Transbots wanted $175 for a non-transforming figure with little articulation. It did not help that Hasbro released a decent Quintesson Judge right around the same time.

I don't find the Quintessons interesting enough to get them in MP scale, especially at the prices XTB is selling them for. I think Hasbro doing them was a great idea since they cost a lot less. Hopefully they will do a larger Prosecutor and the rest of them. I like what Phelous said about the Quintessons in his G1 Transformers cartoon review. They were given undue importance, especially when it was revealed they created the Transformers. I liked the idea of them just being a race of robots who dealt their own brand of twisted justice on beings who they captured.

While there is no way to truly future proof because improvements will always be made I think one way to avoid the constant upgrade cycle is to just find joy in what you already have. There is nothing wrong with upgrading if that is what you want to do and its also ok to like a figure that may not be the latest and greatest...i still have the mp 11 seeker molds and i enjoy them because of what they were when i bought them, i still have badcube huff 2.0 and mmc hellion because i think about how happy i was to have those figures represented and i dont think constantly upgrading would bring the same fun to collecting...just constantly swapping out.

Not going to lie, I love my Transformers collection but, I do regret buying some of the cheaper ones, usually the $24 - $35 lines as I really, really love my Masterpieces. I recently started collecting 3rd party Transformers as Hasbro / Takara Tomy has been disappointing me lately. Fans Toys is no doubt up there but, they're also up there in price as they're not cheap. They look and feel fantastic though. I also like my MMC collection as I think Fans Toys and MMC make the two best Transformers collections. I need an upgraded Masterpiece Prowl though as Fans Toys Jive is crazy good but freakingly stupid to transform. Good thing I have the Transform and Rollout Meister so that way, I can keep him in car mode while keeping Jive in robot mode.

My collection is future proofed by not giving a darn about duplicate characters. Basically, I buy whatever I can afford in both price and being interested in the toy, which leaves me at mainline, since it's literally the cheapest scale to collect, as masterpiece costs masterpiece prices and 3p legends costs like 50 dollars for a 3^3/4" figure. However, I also dont really collect core class, despite the fact that it's technically cheaper, since core class doesnt really do a lot of interesting things other than "hey we excluded skywarp's null rays so that he could have a random tuning fork for a combining weapon". However, since legacy 2 is inexplicably non-existent in any store with in-person locations, I'm mostly collecting studio series, which definently does do plenty of interesting things such as including some accessories that are vital to two voyagers, (one of which I got from hasbro's customer support because of an issue with another thing, meaning in obligated to get the other two things, and another is literally impossible to buy because preorders are immediately sold out) with a leader class figure that I may or may not be able to afford apon release. All that combined with the fact that nobody is able to take mainline seriously (mm yes, this 90 dollar toy souldnt have articulation because the original toy didn't) and the part where I'm still waiting on origins jazz (why target. Why. This is the last time I buy anything from you. I'm getting origins wheeljack off of eBay because I find myself to give them more trust when it comes to actually delivering my hecking package. The only reason I even bought from you is because I have a 25 dollar gift card. I'm going to tell my friends to not give me target cards for special events.) Means that I am doing just swell. (Anyways should I buy the two pack of really good moulds that I missed or should I buy these two moulds that I really need help why can't Hasbro just take a break from dropping peak transformer every week I can only afford to buy these things once every 1-2 months)

Well in the end the whole point of all this is to actually enjoy the hobby. Not make it into a job. Or necessarily care what other people think. Too many people I think get wrapped up in that in this day and age. The main thing is to enjoy what you're doing
Me personally I am in the camp where I like the old marvel comic and toy aesthetic more than I do the cartoon. I keep saying it, but I actually think that the cartoon was actually what led to the downfall of the G1 line. The cartoon was loosely based on the comic when it first came out, but it's time progressed it became more of its own thing and moved away from what the comic initially set. Ultimately I think what killed the G1 line was the fact that the execs at Hasbro got greedy because I knew it was a money maker, and just totally change things around the third season, killing the enthusiasm in the fan base.
One of the things that I've been doing for the last number of years because certain things haven't been made that I would like to see, is that I've been doing a lot of customs. I actually think that the MP-3 mold is the best for a seeker body once a few tweaks are made. After a new head is put on, more articulated fingers, a few tweaks done to the wings, a heelspur put in, it becomes a much better figure!
One of the things that I've done recently is bought a few junk generations seekers for reference material because I like how some of the wings are done. What I'm going to do is scan the parts, mess around with them in CAD so that they match up with the MP3 body type, and make some custom coneheads.
Speaking from my personal taste I've never liked the fact that the coneheads looked like in the cartoon. I liked their personalities, but I thought the whole conehead thing was a cheap gimmick. And not very creative
I do whoever like the way that they look like on the box art the old packaging, and that's how I prefer my coneheads to look like. So I'm going to make some figures that look that way.
I personally think the most important thing is to have access to certain designs that you like so that you can have it in your collection. Some of the things that suck about masterpiece collecting is they put it out one time, and if you don't get it at that particular moment in Time, you're screwed unless somebody decides to sell it later down the road.
Being newer doesn't mean that's better. Sometimes being older doesn't make it better, but I think having 'options' is the most important thing.
Mention it before but I think that KFC's Stratotanker is the best MP Octane that we've ever gotten. I don't know if the metallic version is any better than the first release, but the thing that I personally felt is that KFC's construction and manufacturing cheap as hell, and it shows a lot of the figures. They may have a good design, but poor manufacturing. I do have a complete one that I have in storage, but I don't display it because it was a junker I put together from several other broken figures. I don't know if it's the place they made it out of, but after 6 years I noticed the plastic is not very sturdy. So I don't even feel comfortable putting it out on display
But with the remains I do have I almost have a complete body to work with, and one of the things I'm thinking of doing is customizing the remains to make into a better version with some slight tweaks to it to make it look aesthetically better, and also put in parts that I think they should have done to make it better quality. Maybe simplify some of the transformation and mechanics that are in the figure.
Like I said it's not a bad figure, just poorly delivered.
But ramble aside, like I said in the most important thing is to enjoy what you're doing because you should be getting pleasure out of it rather it being a job sort of speak. And what you have brings you pleasure. That's the whole point of this. Besides the nostalgic Factor.

Excellent topic Mike! 👍🏿 Unfortunately Takara hound is QC riddled. A rare instance where the 4th party offering (KO) is superior.
As far as future proofing. I think it comes down to taste and what character(s) resonate. I love Skyfire/Jetfire so I picked up all of them Siege, Newage, MS, Phoenix and the Takara. Same with Prime. Hyper Toon vs Toy/Real-world just depends on the quality of the offering. If it's good I have no problem doubling if not tripling up.

Fans toys is doing a pretty amazing job, but I would never limit myself to just their releases. Xtransbots puts out some bangers, I mean some collectors like the complicated transformations, and others don’t, but not many people transform these toys on a regular basis anyway. I fear having to transform my magic square motormaster trailer, haha. That’s one of the few toys I avoid. This week I completed my vintage g2 superion . Yesterday I got the toon version of newage Lucifer. I’m all over the place, but in the end I like characters from years 1-3 G1, G2, and Beast Wars.

Let's hope FT does the right thing and goes with a stability / height extending kit for their unfinished combiners, much like CangToys Not-Predaking leg stabilizers and LikeToys / Jinbao's Devastator size extending kit. I'd MUCH rather have FT be done with it and just finish their combiners in a way that can compete with modern competition, and not stay stuck with a development plan that is now old and defunct. I'm OK with partsforming! Anything to get the rest of the combiner bots out.

All great stuff! It seems like people really just want to fill holes in their collections and settle for less than ideal representations. An example would be the MakeToys coneheads. FT is my first choice, but XTB is often a great alternative. I opted for their more reasonably priced Stunticons, and Neptune instead of FT Seaspray. The upcoming XTB Constructicons look fantastic. I would definitely get them if I didn't already have Constructor.
The Unique Toys Combaticons are part of what got me into the 3rd Party scene, but UT seems to have disappeared.
