My name is Brian Fitzgerald - I'm an Australian full time golf coach living in Melbourne and coaching at two venues. The Morack Public GC in Vermont South and the Lang Lang GC in beautiful South Gippsland (An hour and a quarter from Melbourne) where there are lot's of Kangaroos.
    FAQ:
How long have you been a golf coach? I qualified as a full member of the Australian PGA back in 1985. Wow I don't feel that old.
Why do you make videos for RUclips? That is a great question and one I get asked a lot. I love helping people play better golf and people tell me I have a very unique coaching style that is very simple to understand. We really should do things simpler. I just make them to help people and if people like my videos they can either come for a golf lesson in person or if that is not possible you could join my membership program and I can then view your golf swing or any part of your game and really help improve what you do.
Do you always change some ones golf swing? To be perfectly honest I try not to. If I do try to change some ones golf swing I have to have a pretty good reason for doing so and the client has to be fully engaged and committed to both regular coaching and practice in order to make that change. Most people say they will do both with good intentions but most fall away pretty quickly.
So my preference is to change things that will improve their score easily. There are so many different ways to do this.
What do you film with? - I have a few few different cameras I use. An old GoPro Hero 4, an iPhone 6 and iPhone X, A Sony ZV1 and an old Panasonic Handy cam (I'm using that less and less now). I record my sound on an old iPhone 4.
What do you edit with? - About a year ago I switched to Adobe Premiere - prior to that it was Pinnacle Studio
Do you make money off RUclips? - Yes.It took me over 100 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense and then another 50 videos to make my next $100. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - Here's my ko-fi where you can buy me a coffee, beer or a burger should you wish (kind of like giving me a tip via : ko-fi.com/thegolfdoctor
    Thanks for watching!

I tried this out with a mate the other day while practising on course. I immediately felt like my hands where better connected without being restrictive. I felt like my club face was less prone to play/movement on backswing, and in the downswing I was able to feel better where the clubface is during impact. Over the 9 holes, I noticed my shots were also a lot straighter and with less dispersion. Thank you! I'm converted :)

I used to be one of those guys who had the between the figer overlap and I changed it after your 1st video on this and I'm hitting the ball better than ever. I had that old grip completely ingrained too, so it took a little time to get used to doing it the right way. Thank you Brian for telling me about it!

I know this video is old but just came across this one. I have struggled with my grip for years. I had a lot of success with the interlock grip and played down to a single digit handicap from shooting in the 100s. I started to loose feeling in my ring finger and pinky of my right hand, right handed player, which caused me to change my grip. The Varden grip helped me keep playing and initially I gained distance and accuracy using it. I've always struggled keeping my right hand in the same position throughout my swing though. I would find myself regripping the club mid downswing. I found I would still inch my pinky back to the groove between my pointer and middle finger on my left hand. Since viewing this video I'm now practicing at keeping my pinkie on top of my pointer on my left hand and now my accuracy and distance is coming back to where I expect them to be. Golf is fun again! I'm switching my grips to ones with less taper in the lower hand position as I've found this also helps with my regripping problem. No matter what grip you use if your hands are dancing around while swinging the club you're not going to hit the ball consistently.. I know that for sure! As a bonus the tension in my grip is gone and the issues with my hands has gotten so much better. Hopefully I'll be back to a single digit handicap soon. Thanks for this video.

I did try your tip today to put the pinky finger on top on that finger instead of in the gap between those two fingers for less tension and it really works. What a difference! I must say that I was really surprised.

I am pleased it worked for you. It does feel a bit weird at first. The day my coach Alex Mercer got me to do this when I was 15 I remember thinking this feels like my right hand is so week I am going to shank every shot.
I didn't. But it took me about 5 minutes to get used to it.

I’ve developed a very strong interlocking grip position. It was causing some hooks and long irons not flying high enough in the air to stop quick on the greens. I started practicing the overlap grip today and noticed it was more comfortable resting the pinky on top of the index finger like you recommend. Thanks for sharing these secrets!!

Brian thanks for the little gems you keep producing. I used the little pinky grip for a long time and my pinky started to give me a lot of severe pain over time most likely due to not knowing the correct placement. I now use the baseball grip as i can't get used to the inter locking grip. Thanks again for talking about it. I think you should also talk the medical aspects of doing things wrongly if you have any knowledge from your years of teaching and experience. Take care.

    • @fitzygolfpro
      @fitzygolfpro  3 года назад

Thanks Pangayee. The pain was most probably too much tension in the middle part of the grip.
I have certainly seen some bad outcomes from people doing the wrong thing but that is more on a case by case basis.
If I think of things in this area I will be sure to share it with you on a video.

Hi Doc. Wish I found your video a year ago. Found it the day before yesterday, went and played yesterday with the vardon grip. Grip felt weird but soldiered on. Shot a 84 where i normally have to fight to break 94. Didn't hit the ground once behind the ball and had additional 5-10m on every club. Loose wrists felt amazing. I could feel the hinge and rehinge. I cannot believe how such a simple change can improve your ball striking, tried this out on the range today and felt natural and it freed up my wrist and allowed the club to accelerate much more effortlessly. Also felt great on the short shots. Can't wait to take this to the course this Saturday . If it goes as well as I hope, I will report back. Actually saw a video with Steve Elkington explaining this advice on the grip (in a locker room years ago), to a bunch of young Pro golfers. He didn’t quite do as good of a job as you did…Cheers Mike.

I just switched to the Vardon Grip recently. I would hit cronicly to the left of target and suffer from consistency issues(fat and thin shots along with other body issues- hip, knees....etc)
It has helped with the consistency and allows more lag also as the grip seems to have less fingers holding the club. This has allowed the natural drop of the club without muscling it thru. I was an interlock for years but struggled over the last couple years with consisency due to the hip and knee issues and mobility.
Seems to be working so far and confidence in the shots are growing. Thanks for this video!!

Hey Doc, I've been using the interlocking grip for many years now but, after watching your video, realised that I suffered from both of those ball flight errors and wanted to try the Vardon. I played 9 holes at RMC Duntroon yesterday and was quietly impressed at how using the Vardon grip took the tension out of holding and swinging the club. This then resulted in a better round of golf for me. It took me the first four holes to become accustomed to the new grip (doubles and a triple bogey) but then I finished the last 5 with a birdie, a par and 3 bogeys! The golf stars aligned. Of course I'm pragmatic enough to acknowledge that there was likely some luck involved too but I actually felt that this grip helped significantly by "de-tensioning" my hold on the club. Thanks Fitzy!

Thanks Jeremy. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Of the 3 types of grip the interlocking grip has the most tension in the middle part of the grip. I usually recommend it to people that don't have a lot of hand strength or people with small hands. That is not to say that it doesn't work for more people.
I would still try and put it in the middle joint of the bottom hand as I explained in the second secret.
      I hope this helps.

Interesting. Understand the first secret and yeo that explains the tension at address. The problem I have is with the second. If I position the club in the fingers as described I feel as though I am going to loose the club. This results in tightening of the left hand and a perfect cover drive.

Hey Ken thank for you’d comment. You are right that grip change feels strange and weak.
When I made the change it felt like I was going to shank everything. I never did.
You are also right that initially the left hand will tighten to compensate.
You will end up hitting it to the right mostly if this happens.
The reason I like a neutral grip is you can give it scream rip with you’d right hand and there is little chance of you pull hooking the ball.
At least if you do you will know it was not caused by the grip.
My advice is to give it a really good go in a practice session. The first 10 minutes could be ugly but it should get better after that.
If it doesn’t get any better forget it and go back to your old grip and move on.
      I hope that helps.
      Thanks for watching.

I've been using the interlock grip since high school golf days and recently just got fitted for some new clubs at UGP in Santa Monica. My right pinky has never hurt until I was a few rounds into using my new clubs. It's been hurting so badly after each round that I have to resort to icing it to reduce inflammation. Last round, I decided to switch to the Vardon grip which saw an iffy game albeit thanks to the adjustment but my pinky felt so much better. From watching your video, I realized my Vardon grip was incorrect as I had placed my pinky in between my left index and middle finger. I'm going to apply the pinky over my index finger at the range today and hopefully get some positive results. Thanks for sharing this tip!

When you got your new clubs were the grips thicker than your last set? If so that would account for the change in soreness.
It will take a bit of work to get the feel for the grip change and the feeling most people describe is it feels weak. It isn't but that is how people describe it to me after the change.
I would love to be kept in the loop on your progress.

@@fitzygolfpro Thanks Brian. I feel like the new grips are thicker than my previous set. I was so surprised that I had to switch my grip just because of that as the pain in my pinky was becoming rather questionable. I had a great range session over the weekend with my new Vardon grip and found that holding my right pinky on top of my left index finger is much better to achieve consistency and amazingly, it changed my ball flight on my wedges from fade to baby draw when applying about 70% power and up. The new grip felt unnatural and weak at first but I got used to it and am pretty comfortable now. I feel like I have better control of my grip overall. Just need to build on that and gain more confidence over time. I’m an 8 handicap and am on my journey towards scratch (hopefully one day) - thanks for this help along the way!

Brilliant Fitzy. I wear a cadet size glove and legend has it I should use the interlock which I did for the first 7 or 8 years. Then I tried the overlap and found it was more comfortable, I played better and even won my Sunday league championship the same year I changed to an overlap. To me it seems the interlock would be more difficult for golfers with smaller hands but what do I know. Love the Mizuno bag too.

Started golf 26 years back with the vardon and no one told me what you explained. I sliced for the better part of my younger years. Switched to reverse overlap , less slices but reduced my distance somehow. Last 5 years been playing with interlock , alot more consistent but very often specially in pressure situations will hit short or a slice or even the occasional skier with the driver. When I try to hit it longer i end up pulling.
Then came this video. Tried it today. It's amazing how beautifully and consistently the ball launched. My chipping and short pitches do need work as i guess am used to the interlock. Have not tried it on bunkers.

Brian, tried today in an 18 hole round with one hour warmup. Felt strange the first half hour, natural and comfortable by mid round.
Consistent game is what would best describe the outcome. A few bad shots, most caused by not fully turning, I think.
I did have the impression that my irons would go one club shorter, but the driver and woods did not and I felt very confident hitting hard.
All the round with the pinkie finger over the left-hand index finger, not covering the knuckle. Somehow this forces the left hand to go better positioned over the club.

    • @fitzygolfpro
      @fitzygolfpro  3 года назад

Hi Tommy I am glad you enjoyed the video. The best way to answer your question is to put it on a scale.
If the number 1 equals extremely relaxed and the number 10 equals extremely firm. The best number to pick where you should be is about 6.
If you are too loose at the top you regrip the club and you wear a hole in the golfe in the heel of your left hand (the most common wear pattern in a glove).
If you grip too tight at the top you will find it difficult to release your hands properly through impact and will result in a lot of shots going to the right.
      I hope that helps you.

Thanks for your feedback and your question @Patrick Moore
My recommendation is to have one grip for all shots and another for putting.
A neutral grip means you have to do something right to hit a good shot. A stronger grip (in general) means you have to do something wrong to hit a good shot.
A strong grip for the right person can help. The right person is someone that does not or can't release their hands. Older people, people with arthritis, weaker hand strength etc.
If your hands are normal I would encourage you to use a neutral (not weak) grip as you will need to release the club. The benefit will be a higher ball flight, straighter golf shots and a few more yards carry.
I'd love to know how it goes for you.

In my thirties I decided to go from an interlock to an overlap (Vardon) I also wanted to draw the ball and this seemed to be easier because I'm self-taught and we didn't have video technology or anyting then. One of the things that was always frustrating to me was that when I watched better players play they put their pinky in between their fingers instead of over the top of their index finger. Thanks for the feed back and questions Frank.
The ball goes a little higher with a neutral grip because you are presenting the correct amount of loft on the club to the ball. A strong grip reduces the loft presented to the ball at impact as it is slightly closed.
A higher ball flight will help you to get the ball to stop on the green.
Distance won't come from a grip change. Unless you consider that a lower ball flight might roll a little more therefore giving you a few more yards (nut not many).
Distance comes from becoming more efficient in your swing and making the club head travel faster (not trying to hit it harder),
      I hope that helps.

As a kid and teenager I used the overlapping grip with pinky in the notch. Played the “loosest” and tension free golf I ever played. Somehow through life and back issues getting in the way I ended up with the interlocking grip. Can’t even remember how that happened 😂👎. Been suffering with too much tension in my hands and my misses are exactly what you called out, pull hooks and big blocks. Going to give this a go tomorrow at the range. Hey Tony.
Most of the answers lie in the following video.
      The golf grip explained.
      ruclips.net/video/3rGdTrxFtHc/видео.html
Basically the Interlocking grip is for people with small or weak hands. If you aren't in this category you will have too much tension in the grip and that can stop your hands working efficiently causing both a fade and loss of distance.
It won't always lead to this but it could.

I've been trying to find more information on this.
Every single site about golf will represent the overlapping grip with the right pinkie finger resting in between the left middle finger and left index finger.
The English Wikipedia is no different: «In the Vardon grip, one places the little finger of the trailing hand in between the index and middle finger on the leading hand». It even mentions that a visual depiction is the logo of South Herts Golf Club where Vardon was the club professional.
Remarkably, the Spanish Wikipedia does have it right and also explains in which circumstance the pinkie finger should be placed in between the left hand fingers: «The Vardon grip involves interlocking the hands on the golf club grip - left hand on top and right hand below -, so that the right pinkie finger rests on the left index finger (for a right-handed golfer); if this cannot be achieved because the hands are small, then the right pinkie finger is placed in the gap between the left index and middle fingers». (translated).
Will try this weekend, very excited about it!

I was not trying a click bait title.

My coach Alex Mercer showed me this in my first lesson with him back in 1980. He has coached David Graham, Steve Elkington and Michael Campbell to name a few. So he knows something about golf.
The best advice I can give you is to try it on a range somewhere and see how it feels to you.

Always thought the finger Did rest in the gap with the Vardon grip, who knew, lol! From Ben Hogans 5 lesson, he claimed to wrap his pinky around the knucle of the left index finger, felt it gave that grip of his a little more power...or so that was my interpretation and followed suit. There are a few other ways to place the right hand,, Jim Furyk uses a Double overlapping grip, yes two fingers not just one, and an older English golfer/commentator Peter Ellis(not sure of the spelling) overlapped a whopping three fingers, leaving only the thumb and index finger on the shaft(grip). I've tried the double overlapping fingers and I must say it feels Very weird, a fade grip all the way and requires some strength not to mention..trust!(?)

    • @fitzygolfpro
      @fitzygolfpro  Год назад +1

Greg Norman used a double overlap and we know where his bad shot under pressure went. Always right...
Generally speaking I like neutral grips. That way you have to do something right to hit a good shot.
The right hand for right handed golfers is the power source and we should be encouraged to use it. Having a neutral grip helps make this happen.
Seve told me once that the right hand is where the magic is.....
I have never seen anyone with a great short game use a strong grip. Even DJ changes his grip for his short game shots.
My advice as always is give it a go and see what happens.

I just came back from the range, I adjusted the little finger just as you showed, and guess what....no pull hooks, no pulls either. Can interlocking cause the grip to come out from the “heel” pad on your left hand? I noticed nothing feels comfortable with my right hand doing the interlock and I feel the club bounces at the top of my swing and kinda slides out from under heel pad even tho I know I start with it in the right position. I feel like the interlock grip is causing some of these issues?

    • @fitzygolfpro
      @fitzygolfpro  Год назад

      Probably not @mikaelantoszyk261
The loose feeling you have at the top of the swing is most likely caused by either a grip in the left hand )assuming you are a right handed golfer) that is far too strong.
Or the pressure in your left hand is changing at the top of the swing in the change over from back to down swing. Take a look at your most used club like your driver and see if there is a wear pattern on the grip or your glove if you use one. You might notice a gauging out of the rubber or a hole in your glove where your left thumb is.
Try weakening your left hand slightly (as you look down on your grip move your left hand slightly to the left so you can see two knuckles).
Alternatively, make a conscious effort to grip slightly firmer with the last 3 fingers on your left hand at the end of the back swing.
      I hope this helps.

If I shoot around 80-84 on average, is it worth trying to get rid of my baseball grip to continue getting better?

      Probably not Sam.
If I was coaching you one on one I would ask you 2 questions.
What is the shot that you hit that you hate?
What is the shot that you would love to hit that you can't.
If I felt your grip was the cause of either of these I would possibly change it. But only after seeing you in person.
The baseball grip is a good grip. You don't have to change it.
If you want to lower your golf score focus on the things that will lower that. Distance control with putting, chipping and pitch shots. Short putting (inside 5 feet) hitting more greens in regulation by hitting 1 more club that you think.
      I hope that helps Sam.

I use a double varden overlap, only because I broke my hand playing. I had to adapt

There is nothing wrong with that Adam. It’s a case of finding what works given your circumstances.
      Well done.

I cant do interlock or overlap. May be because I grew up a baseball player and that just feels natural. It feels extremely awkward . I also have extremely fat fingers so that may be why as well.

I just started using the overlap after being a baseball gripper for 20 years and wow what a better feeling with the Irons but I still need more work with my woods/driver I feel it's too lose at intact but practice makes perfect or in golf at least better lol nobody's perfect except Jack himself

Thank you for letting me know your thoughts.
It is very different at first especially when you have been using the baseball grip for 20 years.
It will take a little getting used to but you have already seen the improvement it makes.
Stick with it. You will reap the rewards.
      Thanks for watching.

    G’day Brian,
We’re hanging in there. Pretty frustrating losing months of your golfing life. I suppose there’s worse.

Are you feeling like you’re holding the club more in one hand than the other?

    • @fitzygolfpro
      @fitzygolfpro  3 года назад

Definitely my right hand and in particular my right thumb and pointer finger.
