Feels like my RH pinky is bruised after constant interlock play - and as a result my grip starts coming apart creating a space between my hands. It’s early, but the 10 finger grips feels really connected to club.

As an older golfer i changed to baseball grip because i felt i was losing distance with the vardon grip ( finger aches and pains) more than 2 years ago . i think once you get use to a change it becomes second nature , now i find it difficult to go back to a vardon

  • @bhags59

Dude it’s actually such a game changer in my opinion. With the 10 finger I actually feel like I can release the club thru impact and im not holding off the face and fearing the shit out of a hook. I have huge ass hands too and my grip tends to get too strong with an interlocking style for some reason. The 10 finger just feels natural and my hands fit on the grip so nice and neutral without any manipulation. I’ll tell you what, it’s a god send for the short game too. I hit the nicest little spinners with this grip. Soft forearms and just let the club and bounce do the work. It’s so odd it’s not promoted more because I think it’s the most natural way to hold the club and make it most like other natural promotions in sports.. like a baseball bat swing or holding a tennis racket, if you will. I really don’t understand how it’s so taboo.

I agree 100%, I was always a overlap player until I had three surgeries on my right hand so needed a grip where my right hand would take over a little bit more on impact because my swing plane was good but I was always leaving the face open. Introduce baseball grip and now swing plane is still good and face is square on impact because the right hand is taking over a little bit more so has been super good. And I agree with the short game for some reason you have way more control with the short chips

I’m 70 and a single digit . Some arthritic and sore hands from all the practice and play. I switched to jumbomax ultralight grips on a few clubs and then put them on entire set. Game changers. Went to ten finger and my hands feel great and have incredible control, more speed and power , got rid of the block right with old grip and won’t ever go back. I’ve been playing 58 years and after playing a few rounds it just feels more natural, controllable and powerful. Can hit balls all day with no sore fingers.

Today I switched to a baseball grip after trying out a "feel drill" I saw in another RUclips video with the hands apart. I took a real swing with the hands apart and topped it. I then put the hands together and it felt like butter every swing since.
It drastically changed my consistency from swing to swing. I can't explain it biomechanically, but for some reason switching from interlocking to baseball grip helped me to consistently find the bottom of my swing from the very first attempt. Even my practice swings felt so much more natural and effortless.

Same with me but i find the interlocking messes up my backswing more than anything, like really stiff backswing. Once i switched to baseball, everything just clicked and i could shallow the club with ease & fluidly. It's weird and i really don't know if it's just biomechanics or my technique, but it's certainly strange.

the 10 finger and baseball grip are two different grips. On the baseball, the thumb on the left hand is wrapped around the club. The ten finger grip has the thumb on top of the grip. There is more wrist flexion with the baseball grip.

I converted 3yrs ago after a lifetime of overlap & went with the bigger MidSized Plus 4 Align Grips all at the same time. In the other sports I play, Ice Hockey & Tennis, it would just be wrong NOT to have your stronger dominant hand fully on the grip for power & control - no one in tennis I've ever seen would ever consider a two-hand backhand with both hands not fully on the grip for power & control. Every young golfer should be taught 10-finger - it's the future.

So glad I watched this video. I changed to baseball grip ages ago and many people have commented on why I have done it. I switched because as I got older this really helped with extra power and just felt more comfortable. As I got so many comments I tried to day to switch back and it felt horrible. I have to be careful not to steer the club and I can be more prone to overswing and my right hand losing its full connection with club, but I just need to watch out for this not creeping in. Anyway, after seeing your video I am going to stick with my baseball grip - thanks so so much 😊🙏

Mark, I must say that is one hell of a good golf swing you've got there! My own personal experience is that as a teenager I couldn't get on with an overlap or interlock grip due to grip loosening at the top. I switched to baseball grip when I was 19 and never looked back. It's always given me confidence to really grip it and rip it with a driver, plus confidence in striking with irons.

Recently switched to baseball grip and love it… EXCEPT… I don’t know what to do with my left thumb. Sometimes it gets ‘stuck’ on the way down and I’m at risk of getting injured. Maybe my RH is too tight on top of it? I do think it’s probably a RH placement problem. Also maybe I’m trying to hit it too hard. I get max 140 club speed and hit driver about 200 running to 230…. is it too ambitious to think I’ll ever hit it much further?

I think you're right. I changed from overlapping to baseball grip years ago by chance. I was experimenting hitting balls and liked the feel. Tried it on the course and started hitting it straighter. I found I can hit it just as far with a smoother easier swing. It makes releasing the club easier for me. Now only the baseball grip feels natural. By the way, some past tour players have used it. Notably Beth Daniel, Bob Estes (still plays on Champions Tour) and Dave Barr. Kudos for your open-minded approach!

Agree 100%. It's just whatever you learn early on and what you're comfortable with. Since my dad taught me to golf he let me hold the club however it felt comfortable for me. If I would have learned from an instructor I have no doubt he would have "corrected" my grip to the more common and accepted interlock or overlap. Strangely enough, my dad played with an interlocking grip.

I went to a 10-finger grip with age as I could no longer satisfactorily hold onto the club otherwise. I gained distance immediately. One initially feels the right hand is in control, but "throwing" the club with the right hand (right hand golfer) ultimately keeps your head behind the ball and down----versus "pulling" down with the left hand, in which your head and body tend to lurch forward and down.

I’m using 10 finger more and more now having grown up with overlap, then moving to interlock. I find I have way more control over all of my long clubs with 10 finger. Just feel more confident, particularly with Driver. I do however still interlock with wedges, and softer shots in general. It’s a weird one, and it’s funny to me that people get really hung up on this, but for me, I’ve had massive improvement with driving (distance and accuracy), and get at least 10 - 20 yards more on all irons. Each to their own, but will be interesting to see if it does become more popular. I wouldn’t have even considered it 10 years ago.

I've experimented with the jumbo grips that Bryson DeChambeau uses. The size of those grips got me to try gripping the club with the thumb on the LEFT hand wrapped around the club. The heal of the RIGHT hand resting on top of the left hand thumb, instead of extending down the shaft into the palm of the right hand. There's a lot of discussion of a "long left thumb" as opposed to a "short left thumb". What about NO LEFT THUMB???

"strong" on the club...I also changed to midsize grips...The result?... I hit the ball straighter and farther than I used to and lowered my scores... My longtime partners made fun of it in the beginning but not anymore... We don't have to look for my ball!... I'd recommend anyone to try it.

I'm unsure how other younger players are taught, but my father made me start with baseball and I played it for more than a decade before I started experimenting with interlock/overlap. I'm very right hand dominant and it's possible that's why I always had a small draw when using baseball. After switching to other grips styles it was more straight/slight fade. I was playing a round the other day in some chilly weather and felt I was struggling with feeing the club so I switched to baseball on the back 9. This ended up being a noticeable difference as I shot 5 strokes better on the back 9 with much more consistent iron play. I honestly am not sure why I swapped to begin with other than curiosity but I'm thinking of playing with baseball again to see how it goes.

I had a weird time where I was trying different things and one thing was using my left hand (leading) I would make it very strong, and then my right hand I’d put into the little pocket it made and my thumb would be on top of the club pointing down at the ball. I hit the ball incredibly far like that, but it felt unstable. Been thinking on trying that again.

Another question for you Mark - why is it not more widly acknowledged in golf help videos that there is a big difference between top and bottom hand dominance? For example Bob Charles and Phil mickelson are top handed lefties - i.e. they are right handed in everything else and the top hand is stronger. I would be very interested to hear how this affects the golf swing. I am one of these top handers - and for me it is always hard to get power in the bottom hand (my left hand), my top hand completely takes over. Yet a huge am
ount of golfing videos assume everyone is right handed and also assume everyones dominant hand is the bottom hand.

Oh man, I spent most of my junior years using baseball grip, nothing else felt comfortable. Spent a winter constantly gripping and working on some swings with interlocking grip and now can't go back. My swing is much more in sync and control now.

I am using a grip in which I put my right hand on the club with all fingers touching the club and then I overlap the left hand onto the right. I am a right handed golfer and this grip seems to work good for me. I feel I get much more power into the strike with the right hand in such a grip. Try it!!

Ya I just hit nice high shots today with 10 finger. I have been using interlock for 10 years. It honestly hurts my pinky and forefinger. I feel I have more control with 10 finger, probably from the fact I'm not subconsciously feeling pain. I also switch my backhand to be neutral from strong. Lots of changes today and I hit some of the most accurate shots in a long time.
I do feel like you have to be conscious of hand positions a little bit more in the swing. But comfortability is key for me. That should let my timing sync up better. Chipping is on fire too.
    Cheers

I've been playing for 30 years and the last 25 of those I've been fighting a hook. I've gone back and forth between vardon and interlocking, but I'm now gonna give baseball a try - my theory is that my right hand can't get a stable hold of the club and remain neutral - as it grips under the load of a swing it ends up a little strong, which causes closed face at impact. So I'm gonna see if i can keep that right hand more on top / neutral with baseball grip.

Alrite Mark, started to play golf late 2019 had a few lessons, COVID hit then July 2020 did my back in that required an op and I had 11 months off work. Not played golf since but went range yesterday and couldn't hit a thing. Last 5 balls tried a baseball grip and had better results, felt so much more natural. Should I stick with it if I've limited time practising and playing? Cheers Chris

As I’ve lost wrist flexibility with age, now 63, I have a hard time getting good wrist hinge without my grip opening at the top. Is the baseball grip something that could help with this problem? If not, any additional advice about the best way to address this issue would be welcomed.

i’ve broken my right index finger before. i’ve always felt strange with overlap/interlock grip and i’m thinking my lack of grip with that finger could be a factor. my next range session will definitely involve experimenting with this. i’ve always thought this was more comfortable but all instruction has steered me otherwise.

Yeah I'm the same I was always overlap grip until I had surgeries on my right hand and then I struggled to turn over on impact leaving the face open. Going to baseball grip change this immediately with a little bit more control and take over of the right hand on impact just have to make sure you don't get flicky on the swing and that's way better

Interesting. Today I changed my grip and I was surprised at the result. I’ve been doing interlocking for a few years as a lefty (but I’m right handed in everything but golf) and I sliced them all the time. Changed to baseball today and they were going farther and straighter than ever before. Why didn’t I change my grip earlier!?!? 😂

How do you mentally adjust to playing with much more skilled golfers in your group. Sometimes feel pressured to play better to keep up with with their standard or pace. Even if they are cool about your game

Please know that we do not give a monkey's about how you play...as long as you don't slow the group down, we don't care how good or bad you are. Please do not feel embarrassed at hitting horrendous shots, or feel you need to apologise for said bad shots, or feel like you need to portray a sense of "even I am disgusted by that shot, it's beneath my usual standard." It's ok, honestly. I reiterate, we don't care. And I mean that in the nicest possible way 😊 lol

Question. I've always struggled with swinging too fast. The problem is exacerbated now by getting old and simply not being able to keep up with myself. How do I slow down? If I merely try to swing slower it just feels like I'm leaving time in the swing to second guess everything.
In the alternative, what's a good way to establish a good tempo at the beginning of a round?

I used to swing fast no matter what. Could not slow down. True reason was because I was all hand and arms dominant. Learning to swing from the ground up really works. The speed is controlled with the legs and ground, not the arms and hands.

I just have more confidence with a ten finger grip. For me it feels like I have even more control over the club face with all ten fingers gripping the club. I’ve used all grips and the one that feels most natural is the baseball grip. But I think most Americans would feel more comfortable with a ten finger grip seeing how most of us played some form of baseball during our lives

10 finger grips gives you more control over the club weight. This grip is good if you do not have strong hands or hands that are just not strong enough to control the golf club

  • @Victor797264

I use 10finger grip personally i feel like you dont have less control of the club because you have more contact with the club i feel the cause from error from it is because of the increase in speed so it leaves less room for error.

My whole life was an interlocking grip. Anything else was not the right feel for me. Been chasing more right hand speed lately and at the range, it wasn't a good session for the first 50 balls. Said, what the heck, lets try sonething different. Wrapped my left thumb, and that was it. Control, power, speed, compression, acvuracy was up in spades. Thought, no way I could use this on my wedges. Wrong... controlling the face was so easy, and using mt 54° between the 100 and the 125 yards flag, still straight was surprising. Came home hit 100 foam balls with my 6 iron. No going back for me.
