He likes it... and thinks it will be unsuccessful. I tend to agree. People shopping for an SUV in the price point of the Grecale Trofeo are going to cross-shop it with the Cayenne GTS and Turbo. It's a premium compact SUV that is priced to compete with premium mid-sized SUVs. With a brand that has rather limited cachet in 2023. All those garbage "depreciation specials" with Dodge switch-gear are going to come back to haunt them now that they're trying to make actual premium vehicles again. All in all, the Grecale is going to be a really hard sell.
@@megachonk9440 Wheres this nonsense comming from? Nobody will crossshop it with a Cayenne. If anything cause Maserrati also has the Levante if they want a bigger SUV. And M doesnt have a limited cache, lol. Those "depreciation specials" you speak about still sold in limited units and for tens of thousands of dollars more than its rivals. They're not a mass manufacturer. Its still a brand that has exotics on its portfolio, its very rare, very expensive and universally lauded as beautiful. This is for loaded people who want a small SUV for whatever. Theyre not searching the best car for their money.
Funny, the clicking sound you get when the passenger changes the volume is exactly the same sound I get when I change the volume on my hearing aid. A little random, a bit strange, but I though I’d share it anyhow.
I drove a Grecale Trofeo last night and was extremely impressed. I drive a 2023 Macan S with every performance option and the Grecale feels faster (although the real-world 0-60 is almost identical.) the Grecale feels more special than my Macan. It oozes charm and character, but I still think my Macan handles just a tiny bit better. It definitely steers better - although the Trofeo’s steering is wonderfully accurate, it is completely devoid of any feedback, to which my Macan offers a good amount of feedback. The 21 speaker Sonus Fabre stereo was amazing, it looks amazing and it performs better than anyone was expecting. It’s just too expensive. The one I drove was $117k and the dealer is taking $10-$12k off all Grecales they have on the lot. If the Trofeo was $90k, I’d probably buy it over the Macan. But it’s not, it’s just too expensive for what it is, despite being an exceptional performance crossover.
Point is cars in Europe are better quality than USA, that's why your prices are lower. Maserati don't make cars for your market like Germans. When you buy Maserati its the same that is sold in Europe. Germans have factories in USA so they make less quality cars like you Americans are use to. So Maserati grecale price in Europe is same just like porce macan. Just to highlight base macan is 4k £ more than base grecale. So how much money is your Porsche macan?
So basically they have done what they have always done, create a great performing, great looking, and greatly over priced with the most depreciation…. It’s exactly what I want in a car. Seriously, I love it ❤️
this is way worse than those brands! lexus borrows a lot of toyota parts but Maserati borrows way more from dodge! they are just all bad and lexus offers more for the price and depreciation is MUCH less @@lucasworktv
I will patiently wait for the Trofeo to tank in the second hand market, Would make a lot more sense in the 70s. With their history of depreciation and unsold inventory, this might be an. amazing compact suv to pickup one to two years from now.
I think it looks more like an Aston Martin than the German trio with exclusivity sophistication Italian charisma flair its rivals simply can't match for that reason it justifies its more expensive price tag!
True...and all cars can suffer from a dead battery, this makes things easier on the mechanic getting in and out while it's in the shop.... which it probably will be a lot, because it has a big M 👑 on it's grill.
Neighbor literally just got the car today parked in their driveway. I stared at it more than a few moments and thought: How do you pronounce Grecale? Thanks for answering that question, Doug
"Small SUV" that accommodates a 6'3" guy in back ;-) We have a Stelvio Quadrifoglio (same basic vehicle) and it is the best performance SUV to drive but to be fair...we occasionally run out of trunk space on the cottage run. Easy enough to fix...added a roof box. It's our second Alfa and happy to report we've only ever had one issue which was a sensor replaced under warranty.
Just finished 4 years in my Stelio. Great driving SUV, only bettered by the Macan, but the Porsche is tiny, 4 seater only. I looked at this Maserati in the show room and was shocked that it was exactly the same car as the Stelvio with a new interior and different engine.
@@cuoresportivo12 It's not more fun to drive but I have to admit it's more solidly put together material / feel wise. That said though...gives it a more luxury than sport feel. Definitely too small if Stelvio is too small LOL
I have the GT from the dealer for the week, it’s pretty fun. The exhaust pop when manual shifting is addicting. Interior is really nice. I’d rather have the Stelvio for styling and handling though.
Sorry Doug The rear door opening exists, 😊but it is not under as in fronts but next to the window buttons. A curiosity, the Passat was originally a sailing cargo 😊 it still exists parked in the port of Travemunde in East Germany. I think I'm one of the few who slept on that ship.
I almost bought the 2024 Grecale Trofeo. Then I test drove the newer Stelvio Quadrifoglio with their larger 21" tires, better tuned exhaust for better performance, among a few other things, and sat in the Sparco racing seats.... a sport car purist vehicle. I bought the QV with the same performance and saved over $20K.
Pretty much every car on this list has a 6 for handling so Surprised to see this car also get 6 especially after Doug saying it’s probably the best handling Small SUV he’s driven. Shouldn’t it be like 7-8 in that category??
@@garytryan Agreed, his numbers have never made much sense. He also said the car took a hit in value due to it's price, but it got a 6 which was tied for the highest number on the list in that category.
I'm really pleased this is expensive and exclusive because jealous peasant haters on here don't deserve a car like this! they don't appreciate Italian beauty class sophistication its only for the higher classes! Lower class peasants should stick to the common usual offerings!
Finally, a Maserati that's built properly. Under the stewardship of Stellantis, but it's a good looker, great quality, and I've seen one in the UK! It's a little thing but it sounds great!! Brilliant video as always, Doug!!
I tested these in pre-production. The performance and drivability aspect, I believe, will genuinely win hearts everywhere. It is a tremendous machine. However, the longevity and durability testing we simulated over nearly 100k miles, did not instill confidence. I'm hoping they tighten the bolts a bit tighter at the production level. Otherwise...oof.
@@boutinboy Performance and driveability aren't why people buy $110K vehicles. It has to have cachet, and Maserati has spent the last several decades squandering the value of their brand on "depreciation specials". For years they were using Dodge switchgear and infotainment systems. And as for durability... well, this would be the first Maserati that wasn't a dumpster fire in living memory. At this price point, they're competing with the Cayenne GTS, and maybe even the Turbo. It's a bigger, more practical SUV for about the same money, offers similar performance, and... nobody's going to cringe and snicker when you roll up to a swanky shindig in a Porsche.
THIS(!!!) is the Best Luxury-Sport SUV on the Market! I have been waiting for Dougs Review. Better than the Macan, Better than the Cayenne. There are So Many Nice and Elegant touches in the Interior that Doug did not talked about, plus the High Quality Sound System.
this car deserved a higher dougscore. He talked so much about the amazing handling and then just gave it a 6? That's the average score of all the other badly handling SUVs! Same with the styling, this car is beautiful imo. It got less than the X5M? Come on man...
Much better materials you say, as if you haven’t seen the base trims! And to answer you with why they don’t offer a spare tire; is the same reason every other luxury brand doesn’t either. Most luxury brands give their cars run flat tires; which is both good and bad at the same time. Brands that give their vehicles run flats, won’t allow you to change your tires to normal tires at the dealership. Another disadvantage would be the fact the tires can be extremely expensive to replace, therefore brands won’t give you a spare. The benefit being once you pop a tire, they can still run another 50 miles before going completely flat!
Interior screams Alfa Romeo, especially the steering wheel and the location of the start/stop button. I'm 99% sure this is a slightly redesigned Stelvio.
@stefanomarchi3542 I doubt it. Some sources say that this is a rear biased AWD, the Tonale is front drive biased. From Wikipedia: "the Grecale shares the company's Giorgio platform with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the fifth generation Jeep Grand Cherokee". Also, it uses the ZF 8 speed automatic transmission from those models.
I would suggest also comparing this to the basic AM DBX. Similar power/performance, similar cachet, similar interior quality... But 50% cheaper. Great job Maserati!
I certainly wouldn't agree with it having the brand power as Aston Martin. Also, the DBX is bigger, it's a bit longer than a Levante. The Levante Trofeo seemingly starts ~£131k and the base DBX apparently ~£158k, so looking at those two might be a better comparison.
@felixneri: Aston Martin has far more elements manually made than any other SUV on the market in the world. Similar to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Those 2 are in a league of their own when coming to interior quality.
the DBX is a much larger and more technical vehicle. Also, infinitely more bespoke. No comparison. DBX competes with MB GLE, Porsche Cayenne, Bentayga, Audi Q8 etc. This does not. It's a size smaller.
Technically, Maserati's Fuoriserie program will customize however you want, but then you would be paying Aston Martin money depending on how many bespoke options you select regardless.@@JakeDrives1
7:15 2014 Lada Niva, the ones that they still build on the old 70's chassis... You turn the lights on and off, or select the parking lights, with a three-way switch right around the climate controls, but you select normal lights or high beams on a stock to the left of the steering wheel, which is NOT the same one that contrlos the turn signals. Amaizingly quitky car, I love it.
@@jwalster9412 I genuinely appreciate how they keep making these. Not just a retro car, but THE old car, with some added modern amenities... Some... Meaning airbags, drive-by-wire, hydraulic steering and a more modern engine. Nothing else, I think... XD it would never pass US safety standards... But it's a fun car. Anemic engine, but torquey enough to take off road and pretty reliable mechanically... Not electronically...
Before Russia started their shenanigans I was considering importing a Niva. They're crappy but they're so simple that they can be fixed with a hammer and an empty vodka bottle. The separate high beam stick seems common for Fiat-based designs as the Yugo was the same way.
Yesss! I love that you gave the Passat some love in this video... But boring fact - many VW's are named after winds actually. Scirocco, Golf (Gulf), and Jet(ta).
We need to stop saying "pretty good interior" on these when it is now class-leading. There's no other SUV this size with a comparable interior quality and design, and it also has the backseat space and amenities of a midsize SUV instead of a compact, which again from a use perspective means it really should compete more with the Cayenne and X5 than the Macan and X3. Essentially, as Doug said, it now *is* the best in its segment, and consequently has the price to match. Just pick up one at the end of a 3 year corporate lease for $60-70K from a certified Maserati dealer and get a 5 year warranty without the inflated asking price.
Why is the MC20’s twin turbo Nettuno V6 detuned for use in the Grecale Trofeo? I believe one reason was so it would be better suited to a car like the Grecale, given the MC20’s higher-revving nature and peakier power and torque curves wouldn’t exactly have been the best fit for a car like this.
Because it's not the engine from the mc20. The Grecale is based on the stelvio qv. That's the engine from the stelvio. Just search online some engine photo from the stelvio. It's the same platform and engine... I really don't understand this GIGANTIC mistake doug just did
@@Alfatesterit’s a different engine, despite same engine cover of the Stelvio. The Netuno has 2 combustion chambers, it’s really a detuned version of the MC20 engine
Ah yes, the small SUV. Man, imagine if you went even smaller for more performance. Yeah, let's go back to cars! People bought SUVs because they wanted larger, more practical cars. Losing practicality to say you have 500hp or an expensive Audi Q5 is going to be hard to sell.
This is considered a small SUV nowadays? Damn, must be seen as one in the US only. Also... it's competing against the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q5, BMW X5 etc. all the same size. The ones mentioned in the video like the Macan are way smaller than this thing.
Just a comment on the wristband key. It is just to open/unlock the car and the battery can' t be replaced to maintain the active lifestyle (waterproof) capability. In order to make it work, you need to set the configuration of the car to be automatically locked once the key is away from the car, it literally works like that, walk 3ft (1 mtr) away and the car will lock, if you have the wristband key, will unlock once you get close enough. So, aftermarket with this functionality, hard to tell, but perhaps they make it so it locks and unlocks from the wristband, now... Wouldn't that be considered "hacking" if is aftermarket? 🙂.
Always been a car guy but, I've lost the plot along the way. 20 years as a mechanic and I've never seen so much expensive junk down the road. None of the new cars will last ten years but who cares?! We'll all be living in 15 minutes cities soon, who'll need a car when we can (must) rent a scooter?!
wish they would stop calling this segment "SUVs" and call them what they are - crossovers. manufactures know that SUVs are hot right now so they name everything an SUV - whereas 15 years ago they were crossovers.
Compact SUV's/Crossovers are just shittier hatchbacks. Waste more space, has less space inside ot use. It's the worst car design humanity has invented.
Hello doug, no the V6 is not borrowed from the mc20, the Grecale is based on the stelvio quadrifoglio platform, so the trofeo it's basically a stelvio quadrifoglio. Same power level, same engine. If you take a look at the engine on the stelvio qv is exactly the same as the Grecale one, except for the badging.
The V6 in the Stelvio is the 2,891 CC 690T engine derived from the Ferrari/Maserati F154 V8. The V6 in the Grecale Trofeo is the 2,992 CC Nettuno engine that was developed for the MC20. The Nettuno is almost certainly derived from the 690T (or a separate V6 fork of the F154), because there are a lot of similarities, but Maserati insists it's an all-new in-house Maserati engine design. In any case, they're probably related, but they definitely aren't the same engine, and unlike what you claimed, they aren't rated at the same power. Again, it's similar, but similar is not "the same thing". The 2.0L Multiair turbo is the same engine in both the Stelvio and Grecale, though. As for the platform, yes, it is based on the same Giorgio architecture as the Stelvio, but so is the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Alfa Romeo Giulia and Maserati GranTurismo (which also uses the 3.0L Nettuno V6, which means this same engine is used in 3 models with 4 different tunes all making different levels of power). So on this same platform are 3 different SUVs (4 if you consider the Grand Cherokee L a separate model), a sedan, and a grand touring coupe, all of which are different vehicles with different target markets and having different dimension (including wheelbase). Here's some pointless trivia. The Stelvio is marketed as a mid-sized SUV. The Grecale is marketed as a compact SUV. The Grecale is, in fact, larger in all dimensions as well as the heavier of the two vehicles. Go figure.
@@megachonk9440 nice trivia but I worked for maserati while was developing the Grecale and it's basically a stelvio quadrifoglio verde. Part numbers are the same. Engine bay is the same... Maybe the bare block is not identical with the stelvio qv but everything else is
@@Alfatesterit’s not the same engine, they just use same engine plastic cover, it’s not only size difference, the concept is distinct, the Netuno has 2 combustion chambers and was designed in house by Maserati. @@josedealbuquerquejr.941 i understand your point, bare block + heads. All the rest is from the alfa. The nettuno is dry sump, this is not. And it's a good thing, I am not saying it's a shame. But all the accessories are from the qv v6

I agree! Grossly overpriced
Point is cars in Europe are better quality than USA, that's why your prices are lower. Maserati don't make cars for your market like Germans.

That's freaking crazy. 500 hp in something this small
@@Ametisti True.

There is wind in Adriatic sea area called Greco Levante, so both names are used in Maserati nomenclature.
Because it doesn't look good to advertise that their mini SUV makes just as much power as their flagship performance car.
Because it's not the engine from the mc20. The Grecale is based on the stelvio qv. That's the engine from the stelvio. Just search online some engine photo from the stelvio. It's the same platform and engine... I really don't understand this GIGANTIC mistake doug just did

Yoooo I like the idea of a wearable key! Especially in something like a Maserati, walking around quietly flexing that you drive a Masi.
This is considered a small SUV nowadays? Damn, must be seen as one in the US only.
Also... it's competing against the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q5, BMW X5 etc. all the same size. The ones mentioned in the video like the Macan are way smaller than this thing.
I love the wristband key. Is this available as an aftermarket item for other cars?
