Old fashioned baseball is a fun topic, so I decided to dig into the career of a legendary pitcher.
In 1884, dead ball baseball era legend Old Hoss Radbourn, also known as Charles Radbourn or Charley Radbourn, had perhaps the best pitching season ever. 135 years later, we meet here on Opening Day to discuss the legendary Old Hoss Radbourn 59 wins, or was it Old Hoss Radbourn 60 wins? Either way, Old Hoss Radbourn 1884 needs more attention.
One of a handful of MLB 300 game winners, Radbourn did most of his damage for the Providence Grays of the National League. He also played for the Boston Beaneaters. We learn about his feud with Charlie Sweeney, as well as the legendary stats behind his 1884 season. We also learn quite a bit about 1880s baseball in general. In total, the season is chock full of unbreakable baseball records. We end by showing some Old Hoss Radbourn twitter antics.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I promise I won't let the new sponsor get to my head or make me a sellout. So let's just kick back, enjoy Opening Day, and have the peace of mind that code FOOLISH can get $20 off your first SeatGeek purchase. Please use it. I have 14 children to feed.
Does the code expire? I'm probably going to have to wait until after the weekend before I can pull the trigger on some tickets.
@@jasonreis229 You'll be fine
Hey @FoolishBaseball I'm planning on going to a baseball game but I don't want to get ripped off. Do you know anyway i can insure I'll be getting the best value seat? Also if this involves a service, do you know any way I can get a discount on this service? Thanks.
@@kennythekid130 If only there were some sort of way to rate each deal on a scale of 1-10 and get $20 off your first purchase!
Foolish Baseball I don’t mind the sponsors; but be careful using TAPS comedically. It’s disrespectful and in general, baseball fans by-and-large are the sort of people who might take offense to that. Just something to consider.
you forgot the part where the game before he quit, charlie sweeney pitched another whole game drunk and won. after which he didn’t leave with the team but rather with an escort he brought to the game. goddamn legend
Haha, I didn't even know that part! What a wild time. I think pretty much all of them would have had a "drinking problem" by today's standards, but Sweeney was on another level of belligerence.
@@FoolishBaseball I think there's an SB Nation vid about it
@@ezralebowitz3371 yes there is!
Baseball will never again match the good old days
Wasn’t Sweeney playing hurt during that game too?
I love how much effort you put into every gag... the Bob Ross painting?? 😂 Why aren't you the biggest thing in RUclips Sports yet?
Maybe one day...
Julio Franco, too...DAMN!
So funny😂
That "hurt" sound makes me evri tim.
Its because baseball sucks...people don't care about it
This video won the Penultimate Fighting Championship
sir
Beautiful stereotypical FPV comment
My eyes!!! Bald
Thumbs up for that Julio Franco joke
Oh sh*t,,,,, that was a joke?
@@jackm4457 did it not seem weird to you that the picture taken in 1884 had a black baseball player in it...60 years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier?
That’s only funny with context cause I had none when I first watched it as a guy who doesn’t know shit about baseball
@Jack M Actually I wasn’t sure either?
Dude played till he was like 137 years old! 😂
@@buttcrack8024 black baseball players played in the early 80s… they were just treated badly by their teammates and coaches usually. it wasnt until the late 1880s where everyone agreed not to sign any black players
An important thing you glossed over, my man: Hoss's warmups with that numb arm.
Several hours before game time he'd start by tossing the ball feebly to catcher Barney Gilligan standing just a couple of feet away. Little by little Hoss would loosen up and take steps back, back, back, until he was throwing at Gilligan from second base. Moving forward to the mound when the game began was like batting right after taking several weight rings out of your bat.
Speaking of which, here's another fun but often overlooked stat: Ol' Hoss had 387 Plate Appearances that season, 361 At-Bats.
He basically invented long tossing.
he also hung from a tree to stretch his arm he was in so much pain
These stories are great. Could u imagine max Scherzer hanging from a tree to relieve his shoulder pain. To think anyone could throw that much is insane
Hit a HR in the season 😌
RUclips is such bullshit with its recommendations. This vid should have a million views.
Dude I'm getting F'd in the A right now (can't swear because of my sponsor, promo code FOOLISH for $20 off your first SeatGeek purchase)
@@FoolishBaseball I’m dead lol

"They had us in the first half, not gonna lie"

I've been waiting for this video. Might I suggest Michael A. Taylor's 0-5 with 5 Ks, along with a walk-off error. Possibly the worst game ever played.
Ooh, I like it. I have a long list of possible video ideas. Will add.
Curtis Wogan I took batting lessons with him when he was in double A years ago and we’re still good friends he’s a amazing dude
Oooof
@@FoolishBaseball don't forget this one
@@gavinr1425 Good call
Fun fact, for this season, old hoss radbourne had a pitcher war of 19.2 according to baseball reference. That is the 3rd highest pitcher war in history, and yet somehow only the second highest WAR of 1884! While hoss did lead the NL in innings, era, and era+, Pud Galvin set the all time record for pitcher WAR at 20.5 playing for the buffalo bisons
"He only paints the corners" got me.
I'm from Providence and people here think that I'm completely batshit insane when I tell them that we used to have an MLB team, and that team won the first World Series thanks to the first dude to ever flip the bird on camera.
Then I show them this video...
you and me both bro! i love love love old hoss! he’s the man along with A.G. Spalding. i’m also from rhode island and i love the grays 😁
For reference, it took the Cleveland Browns 12 years 2 months, and 8 days (October 26th, 2008 - January 3rd, 2021) to win 60 regular-season games.
Please note that the 1884 New York Metropolitans were members of the American Association, not the American League, which did not exist until 1901.
ROFL at the Julio Franco reference. Also, I'm pretty sure Bartolo was just starting out.
Should have won a rookie of the year that didn't exist yet
the humongous hunk
3:08 tough scene. Also this is the most unique and well done series on sports YT never stop

you might wanna have a look at "Pretty Good" by Jon Bois over at the SB Nation channel. Although this is not bad by any means, i just came here because watching Pretty Good for the 64th time would have been a bit predictable.
@@semtext44 oh yes I love Jon, it's embarrassing how often I accidentally binge watch every Chart Party or Pretty Good episode. Since we have to wait multiple months between those installments though, it doesn't get much better than this channel imo

Your videos are so damn entertaining.
There's actually a book I read about this season called "59 in '84" which is pretty good.
It would be sweet if Pretty Good Jon Bois did a video on it too.
*HECKER? I HARDLY KNEW HER!*
Never forget NL Allstar Jeff Locke
An All-Star every year (in our hearts)
Why would you upload now? I have math classes to fail.
Whoaaa, so do I! I actually have a calculus 3 test to fail in an hour and a half
Let's be honest. You were gonna fail no matter when I uploaded.
@@FoolishBaseball Well yeah, but now I failed and I can blame you. I think it's a classic win win situation
Hey math is fun it's how this person makes videos

That Ken Rosenthal tweet got me
Great Video! I actually work 1-mile from where the Providence Grays Baseball Stadium used to stand. It's now a row multi-level houses. There is supposedly a plaque marking where Home Plate used to be. I have not been to see it yet, but I Think after these Quarantines and Restrictions are lifted, I will finally try to find it
That Julio Franco joke had me in tears. So excited for Opening day. LGM!
Julio Franco is/was/will always be welcome in my videos.
You definitely deserve the sponsorship dude. You touch on a lot of things people will never know otherwise.
This is the kind of channel I’ll be bragging about being an early subscriber of, fantastic content as always
muchos gracias!
Especially watching those stats that morph with the passing of time (for wins, SOs, ERA, etc), you can definitely see Old Hoss was totally a dominant beast in the early days.

I love that these small bits of baseball history that have to do with Rhode Island, like how they won the (technically) first World Series, as well as this! (Remember that livestream trivia?) LONG LIVE JEFF LOCKE
deja vu
Me and my uncle talk about Radbourn all the time, and I love that you made this video.
2:08 Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised that Julio is still playing ball. He was like 50 when he played for the Braves.
And jacked
As a baseball historian I really appreciate the effort! I was well versed in the career of Old Hoss prior to this video and have told friends about his amazing numbers. Not sure if they ever believed me BUT I can assure you I'll be forwarding this vid to them! Thanks for your hard work! keep it up
The Julio Franco jokes were great!
2:00 forget flipping the bird, this champ here's playing Ballgazer.

You need to talk about Johnny Vander Meer who played for the Reds and tossed back to back no hitters something that has never been done again
Opening day and a Foolish Baseball vid, gotta love it. And you got the Chrono Cross BGM too MY GUY!
For an update on that standing ovation at the start of the video - add the miami marlins to that list
This is now my favorite RUclips video of all time.
The personalities in the early days of baseball were so much crazier than they are today, but that's probably a good thing.
Awesome video! Great choice with the Chrono Cross music in the background 👍🏻
“Julio Franco showing signs of aging”....the set up, delivery and the line itself was comedy gold. I appreciated that very much.
Still had a solid 125 twilight years left.
Foolish Baseball as the sun set on his mlb career, he just figured he’d take it to the land of the rising sun...Julio “the Phoenix” Franco.

I'm a simple man, I hear Chrono Cross music I click the like
my favorite fact about him is that his twitter is linked on baseball reference.
The Julio Franco cameo on an 1884 team was epic! Kudos.

Can’t wait for this channel to blow up and jump to 100k plus subscribers. (Also that “Easter Egg” is god-tier)
I wish I knew what Easter Egg you were referring to because I feel like I always put in a bunch of dumb crap.
Why does he look like Robin Williams?

Loving the chrono cross music!! Easily my favorite of your videos I've seen
I love the scrolling message. “You little worm”. Lol.
When I was a kid Hoss had credit for 60 wins. They should give him that one back.
I'm rewatching this and I catch foolish baseball laugh at 0:34 when he says, stand for every nba franchise.
Great video! Yet again I have learned new info from your videos, keep it up! You definitely deserve the sponsorship, hope to see more in the future. Also you should live stream OOTP 20
You deserve better. Excellent work as usual.
Another quality video from my favorite baseball RUclipsr!
Just in time for Opening Day
Yo foolishbaseball the chrono cross ost really brought me back, thank you.
I'm glad to see they were including the "belly itcher" meme in their emails way back in 1880. Damn, I might just sub over that.
